About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
For more than a century, Gage & Tollner was the cornerstone of the Brooklyn restaurant world. Generations of Brooklynites found comfort and community in Gage & Tollner’s magnificent landmarked dining room; generations from now, we want our children and grandchildren to find comfort here, too.

With three longtime friends and celebrated local restaurateurs at the helm -- partners Sohui Kim (chef, Insa / The Good Fork), Ben Schneider (Insa / The Good Fork), and St. John Frizell (Fort Defiance) -- our community-driven team has worked to restore Gage & Tollner to its former glory and guide it into the 21st century. Consistently on The New York Times Best Restaurants List since reopening (2021-2024), our delicious chophouse menu takes inspiration from the Gage & Tollner archives, honoring and elevating beloved longtime classics with meticulously-sourced ingredients and diligent technique.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Sydne Emi Gooden

From the OpenTable editors: A Brooklyn institution from 1879 until 2004, Gage & Tollner was reopened by restaurant vets Sohui Kim, Ben Schneider, and St. John Frizell in 2019 to great acclaim—including a spot on The New York Times's top 100 restaurants list. With classic dishes like oysters Rockefeller and chicken liver paté, as well as a selection of grass-fed, dry-aged steaks, the menu pays homage to the restaurant’s long history. Served in an award-winning dining room anchored by arched mirrors and a spacious dark-wood bar, Gage & Tollner nods to the past while feeling entirely modern (note the teeny 'tinis offered at happy hour).

This week we’re deep-diving with writer Roger Kamholz, author of the just-published Pour Together: A Cocktail Recipe Book (Clarkson Potter). Roger wrote the definitive history of the SHC’s Angostura Colada for PUNCH, and has written lyrically and intelligently for years about some of the more fascinating nerdy niches of cocktail culture — like the use of saffron in Martinis, bitter Margaritas, and infusing Old-Fashioneds with breakfast cereal. The Club’s own St. John Frizell will lead a conversation with Roger designed to up your home cocktail game, and we guarantee it will take some unexpected twists and turns! Three surprising cocktails explored in Roger’s oeuvre will be served, and copies of Pour Together will be available for sale by Greenlight Books.

It was our anniversary but unfortunately a bad experience. The service was slow and unfriendly. The steak wasn’t trimmed properly or cooked to what we asked for. Wouldn’t go back.

The service was outstanding without being obsequious -- attentive, careful, polite, unobtrusive. The food was very good; it was presented "as it should be" nothing fussy. It's a meat place -- steaks -- so the portions are very big with a price to match. The interior is landmarked and harkens back to the 19th century. The noise level is minimal -- something that would keep me coming back. Good selection of wines, and wine-by-the-glass is excellent and reasonably priced.

Amazing! I was able to celebrate my 38th birthday with my lovely lady today and everything went well. I love that I was able to come back to Brooklyn as a former resident and enjoy a good meal. Well done Gage and Tollner.

We went for Easter brunch and it was delightful. Services was top notch; our server was one of the most professional, capable and pleasant we’ve ever encountered & we’ve traveled around the world. He could teach classes. I’m only sorry I didn’t catch his name. My husband had eggs florentine, I had rarebit and my son biscuits & gravy. Everything was delicious. We also had oysters, doughnuts, several very inventive cocktails and dessert & coffee. Not a false note anywhere. Loved the music they were playing, loved the old fashioned ambience. We were so glad we visited! Sometimes I’m disappointed by NYC restaurants but not this time. Impeccable service & food in an UNpretentious, comfortable atmosphere. What more do you need?

We were one of the first parties to be seated but it took over an hour for our food to arrive and parties that got seated after us got served and left in the time that it took us to get our food. This is the first time we’ve encountered this at G&T. We’ve come for many birthdays and special occasions and in general the service has been phenomenal but this time it was very lacking and disappointing
