About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
  • Innovative
Nominated for Best New Restaurant and Best Chef in the James Beard Awards, Gado Gado is an Indonesian-focused restaurant in Portland’s Hollywood neighborhood serving an eclectic menu that derives flavors from owners Thomas and Mariah Pisha-Duffly’s cultural heritage, travels, and culinary backgrounds.

In addition to an extensive à la carte food and drink menu, groups are invited to indulge in a bountiful family-style, chef’s choice Rice Table dinner — Gado Gado’s interpretation of the Dutch-Indonesian “Rijsttafel” feast.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Thomas Pisha-Duffly

From the OpenTable editors: James Beard Award-nominated Gado Gado is what celebratory dreams are made of, thanks to owners Thomas and Mariah Pisha-Duffly’s colorful Indonesian feasts. Order hit dishes like the flaky Malaysian roti à la carte, or go all in on the family-style “rice table” experience for a sampling of curries, grilled meats, and clove-scented rice served on vintage plates. Enjoy it all in the charming dining room with custom bird-and-fish wallpaper or on the outdoor patio with patterned rugs and tablecloths.

We had the tasting menu. Everything was excellent. Especially loved the fritters and the clam dish. Would definitely go again. There was plenty of food so go with an appetite.

We had a wonderful experience eating at Gado Gado again. Our server gave us tasty recommendations and answered all of our questions. The Siu Mai is always delicious and we tried the Beef Rendang which was a nice large portion to share and it was also good. The cocktails are always good. The Sweet Pea was a great summer drink and not too sweet, despite its name. Very refreshing!

Server Kaylee made our first experience at Gado Gado super positive! Information and pace were perfection. Cocktails were pretty special in taste and visually. Our order was served as dishes came out of the kitchen at a pace we could enjoy each one. Leisurely dinner of just under 2 hours! Will be back for sure!

The food continues to be fabulous. There is nothing on the menu that isn't delicious. The service is worthy of note, all the staff worked as a team flawlessly. Other restaurants should send their managers to watch that ballet of efficiency. Really, considering price, quality and service this is probably the best damn restaurant in Portland.
