This central Montreal Indonesian has good food and service in a somewhat understated setting. We had the rijstafel equivalent and it doesn't compare to a rijstafel in Europe. It was far more bland and in general the flavors were not as interesting. Our server was very pleasant and attentive, but would not go out of my way to go here again.
On charming McKay Street, up a staircase to a little gem of a restaurant. The menu offers an interesting assortment of Indonesian dishes for all tastes and palates, and prices are very reasonable. The staff is courteous and attentive and takes the time to help diners make their selection. The Redang Daging (braised beef) is to die for. And say "yes" to a dessert of steamed rice cake - a light, delicate finish to the meal.
Having lived in South East Asia we were excited to find an Indonesian restaurant in Montreal. We were looking forward to the unforgettable flavors of the region. However, Gado Gado falls short of living up to this sensation. The food was very bland with an overemphasis on things being deep fried, making the food greasy and unappealing. The most disappointing was one of our favorite Indonesian dishes Beef Rendang. The meat was a little tough for rendang and the taste of coconut overpowering the dish. The waiter was friendly and it was amazing to see him take care of every table in a full restaurant all by himself.
We were expecting a variety of flavors, dishes, and styles comparable to other Indonesian restaurants I have dined at in places like New York, London, and Amsterdam. We had a large group and ordered one of almost everything on the not very extensive menu. A few dishes were excellent, particularly the appetizers, but most were just OK. The Chicken stay and lamb stew were fairly bland and uninspired. Prices were reasonable and the service was fine, but it was just not the ethnic culinary experience we were looking for. And the place was dingy and hard to find. Signage was confusing.

The steamed buns are good. The Pangsit Goreng (fried chicken dumplings) are yummy, and personally, I think they should serve six of these per order.
Had the Bakmie Goreng (noodles, shrimp, chicken, vegetables), but my husband's Lontong Sayur (curry dish with tofu, egg, vegetables) was very flavorful. We need to go back for the tasting menu.
If you work downtown, go for lunch, but order quickly. They don't have many servers and the food is fresh, so it takes a while to make.
The ambience was spartan. Seventies music playing in the background. Food was not tasty. Too much turmeric in my soup. There seemed to be rice cakes in every dish, which are not my favourite. The waiter was unsmiling and forbidding. The experience was not expensive, but this restaurant does not have the vibe of fine dining.
When I was in Montreal for work, we all suggested Indian and our boss suggested Indonesian instead since we were all adventurous. It was a great find and a great decision. We ate almost everything except for the duck as it was still marinating. We were there on a Tuesday night and it was dead quiet at first, then 4-5 other tables came in later. Totally reccomended.
We went to Gado Gado (Indonesian restaurant in Montreal) for the first time Columbus Day weekend. Though the website indicated that a tasting menu was available, it was not on the restaurant menu. We asked anyway and they were happy to oblige. The tasting menu consisted of 5 courses (I am allergic to shellfish so no seafood involved.) Each course was delicious! I would highly recommend this restaurant for food and service. (We have added it to our go-to restaurants in Montreal!) Some of my favorites: Bakpao Gapit (steamed bun with braised pork belly), sate (lamb and chicken), and Rendang Daging (braised beef). The restaurant's location is easy to get to, right around the corner from the Guy-Concordia metro stop.
This is a very low-key neighborhood restaurant not far from the Musee de Belles Artes in Montreal. We went with a friend who lived there. It was his first time and he will probably recommend it to others. the food was very good and the service very helpful especially re recommending dishes that weren't too spicy.
This is a great restaurant with a family business feel. The service was efficient and the pacing of food was perfect for an intimate dinner among friends. The unique menu has choices for everyone from reasonable vegetarian/seafood options to meaty dishes such as lamb skewers and their "beef jerky." The gado gado salad was excellent. I had the whole tilapia which was beautifully prepared and plated. The wine menu is small, but of good value. Our riesling paired well with most of the dishes.
We absolutely loved it here. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. Always with a smile on their faces, they took the time to describe each dish in detail. We ordered the Rijsttafel (tasting menu) and had the opportunity to try many dishes. Highlights were the Rendand Daging (braised beef in coco)and the heavenly Laksha... one of the best things I have ever eaten. I would highly recommend Gado-Gado. We have already made reservations to return for this week!
A good friend and I had a very enjoyable evening at Gado Gado. Everything was delicious, service was friendly, helpful and attentive. The wine list is brief, but all aelections complimented the food. We were not rushed, and were able to truly enjoy a rare evening out to catch up! Desserts were also very good -- not too sweet or heavy, an ideal ending to a interesting and flavourful meal. I anticipate a return visit!
Excellent food and the waiter really took the time to explain every item on the menu as well as on our plates. It was clear that he was proud of the restaurant and rightly so! Service was a bit slow, but I chalk that up to being Valentine's day. Great time!
