We offer several different seating choices including a long bar with peninsulas for groups of up to six, standard seating in the dining room, high tops, a beerhall style table for up to 20, and a chef’s table that will seat 10 comfortably. We do accept reservations, but always save room for walk-ins, procrastinators, our neighbors, and anyone who might wander in. German Heritage, Southern Hospitality.
Having eaten at many places around the city, funkenhausen compares favorably to all of them. In many ways surpassing notable places like Royster and Band of Bohemia.
The Little Gem salad and the ribs were amazing! Everything we had was great, but those were my favorites by far!
I had been there for both Brunch and Dinner. The brunch menu was great. Decent amount of portion and their dinner menu was amazing! Totally different vibe and experience. Their dishes definitely reminded me of my time when I was in Germany and Charleston, SC. Highly recommended.
Made a reservation for “high top” but only table available when we arrived was right by the hostess stand. It seemed it would get uncomfortable quickly. Instead we were offered seats at the bar. The bartender was very busy and therefore didn’t pay us much attention... it got better over time but not what I expected with a reservation booked days in advance.
Great time! This was our third visit to Funkenhausen and it was as wonderful as our previous visits. Everything from the pretzel knots to broccoli, spare ribs, spaetzel and pots de creme were delicious. Great service! We will be back, soon!
Loved it! We had a fun date sitting at the bar...Risotto and dumplings were delicious! Great service and great cocktails! Can’t wait to go back, thank you!
The hostess was great, she let us know the low top table we reserved was near a family with kids. She offered to option to sit at a high top in a more quiet area :)
Visited on 1/12/2019. We started with a couple of the signature cocktails - German vacation in Mexico and Kirschbomb - both were tasty and a fun start to the evening.
Our first round of pretzels were a bit overcooked; the second round were much better.
We did a sample for the table; picked a couple of items from each column of the menu. Favorites - the ribs, spaetzel, wurst. We thought the steak was a bit overpriced for a simple ribeye.
We actually had too much food for the table. I would suggest ordering less than you think you need - you can always order another item if its not enough. Everything is so rich and tasty.
Would definitely recommend to friends - the only drawback is that it was very loud in the dining room.
Old suburban couple had great time at hip restaurant in big City! Wonderful, open vibe, but not too noisy, even later when it got crowded. Great service from waiter, John, and terrific wine and beer options (did not try the tempting cocktails). Wonderful small plates (we had charred broccolini, caramelized onion spätzle and Carolina gold risotto) and smoked spare ribs for an entrée. The ribs were the best I've ever had: fork-tender, perfectly spiced and cooked, and the white BBQ sauce was incredible. Had dessert (of course!): black forest pots de crème. Delectable! The servings were very generous (I had spare ribs the next night, too), even sharing with my dining companion. On a Saturday night, we were not rushed, and enjoyed every minute of our dinner. Highly recommended.
Second visit. Cool joint. Pork shoulder and pork chops best. Ribeye good, but not worth the hefty price. Solid service.
Everyone was friendly and helpful, the environment was cozy, vibrant, and welcoming, and the brunch was delicious! A friend and I shared multiple dishes! The Black Forest donut, so good! The pretzels were perfect! The smoke trout plate was delectable! The Schnitzel & grits were creamy, savory deliciousness! Highly recommend!
Love trying brunches at new restaurants and Funkenhausen did not disappoint. All the food was great, the restaurant was busy but not to bursting so we had a leisurely meal and were not rushed at any stage. Service was great too. Would unreservedly recommend this place!
Great meal and service. Everything was super tasty and wonderfully presented.
We loved Funkenhausen. The French Onion Spaetzle and the confit pork shoulder were huge hits.
A most unusual dining experience - eclectic German food, not something I'd seen before
Food was very good and the service was first class. Cocktails and drinks were perfect for the occasion.
Well worth the drive. Not a place you'd go to on a regular basis, but we plan to return in 6 months
This place is great and well worth the effort to go. The combination of Southern food with German food is a wonderful combo and is pulled off by this cool, sleek place with a chef to match. Service was outstanding and the drinks were well paired!!
Great new restaurant! Can’t wait to return to try more of the menu!
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful meal at Funkenhausen. It has an open contemporary feel with some great comfort food. You must try the spare ribs with white sauce and/or the spaetzle. We had the half chicken as our entree and it was delicious! Try it, you'll love it!
Best dinner I’ve had in a long time. The diners I was with agreed. Service was impeccable. Waiter was knowledgeable about drinks and food and subbed a drink one of us didn’t love. Broccolini was amazing, chicken, piggy plate. Everything was incredible. Noise level was quiet but unsure if that’s because it was the Sunday before Christmas Eve.
This is a great place to go with kids if you have kids who are good eaters/will eat from an adult menu. We took our six year old twins for a 5pm reservation. They served us very quickly, the food was excellent, every one had a good time. They put us in a more secluded, quieter front area with another family with kids which was perfect. Thanks
I went here for a b day dinner. Really nice food. Waiter or gave us a special drink for b day celebration.
It really is German with southern flair. The chef lived in Charleston ,SC, and you can tell. It was German food but not overly heavy. We shared the pork chop, which is huge, but it was light (as it can be, at least) and tasty. The saurkraut underneath was amazing, soaking in flavors including the sausage that was also on the plate.
The brunch menu was very limited and I did not enjoy the meal. Everything was under salted and overly creamy and heavy.
Incredible food and drinks, amazing service. Bit on the loud side, so conversation not the easiest, but overall great energy.
Surprising twist on German flavors! All dishes were very well developed. Will come back soon!
Ambiance is great with high ceiling anchored by a wooden frame with great lighting and reasonable sound system. Looked like lots of groups of six or more were booked for the early holidays, but we got a table using reservations easily enough and throughout the night there were open tables. Ordered pork chops which were great and also fish which was good. Chocolate dessert looked was mostly pudding and lemon dessert was very good. Parking on the street was surprisingly open (metered, of course!) in this neighborhood on a Saturday night.
Nice open space. Sort of community seating but tables are separated just enough. Really attentive and friendly service. Very brisk presentation of food after ordering. Interesting takes on dishes you think you know. Great artisanal accompaniments to the dishes. Smaller plates but not tiny. Great for sharing between 3-4 people. Outstanding dry rub pork dishes. Specialty spaetzle were outstanding. Oysters Hockefeller a great twist on an old standard. The piggy platter was outstanding start to finish. The Black Forest Pot de Creme was the most decadent simple dessert imaginable. Pricing is reasonable for food, a little high for beverages, but not out of line. Street parking is still very available despite the slow gentrification of the neighborhood. We were there on a Friday, with a reservation without which I doubt we would have been seated, and, despite the crowd, we parked easily, were served promptly and all staff were very accommodating and outgoing. This place is built for success. I hope they stick to their formula.
This was a surprise, food was fresh and delicious, especially the broccolini - it was DELICIOUS. Beer was great and the red wine was also surprisingly yummy. The food was very German- but lighter than the food I had when in Germany. The staff were friendly and it was a fun time for all of us. Went with a group of friends.
Over-priced, clever for clever sake, uncomfortable chairs, mustard in every dish, poor value.
I first heard of Funkenhausen on a food review playing on the payment screen in the back of a cab. I don’t recall the exact dishes they showcased, but the few minutes of footage I saw was enough for me to come in and check it out.
My boyfriend and I came in for a really early dinner (5pm). We thought we’d be the only ones in there, but after 10 minutes of being seated I turned around and the place was packed.
The atmosphere was fun, modern, spacious, not too loud and nicely lit. The food prep station was clean and it was clear that the staff had very good attention to detail when it came to presentation.
The service was great! Our server was awesome and helped a couple of semi-hungry newbies decide what to order based on our liking and appetite. Had the oysters, carpaccio, “the other artichoke” and pretzel. All pretty light and not too heavy. For drinks we ordered an old fashioned and something with tequila in it :) We wanted beers for our second round, but were not familiar with what was on the menu. We gave him an idea of what kind of beer we liked and his suggestions for each of us was right on!
We wanted dessert to-go. The server insisted we experienced the carrot roll plated and take a few bites before he boxed it up so we could appreciate the presentation. Much appreciated!
We will definitely be back. Thank you!

Really enjoyed the food wait staff was awesome excellent new addition to the chicago food scene
Great food. Service was attentive but not overbearing.
Ein wunderschönes, deutsches-esque Restaurant mit neuen Ideen zu traditionellen Rezepten. Mein neuer 'Fav' :)
V V Dank
Service was very attentive and the servers were helpful with suggestions. Food was creative and delicious. The Bloody Mary was just meh.
Excellent German food without the Bavarian influence - very authentic German-style food with clever wordplay in the menu.
Beer list was very authentic and traditional and the cocktails were very experimental!
Food was quite good but our service was spotty. Very nice staff but. Or very attentive on wine and water.
Funkenhausen was a delight. Food was yummy and the service was superb. Great spot. Check it out!
The food was absolutely fantastic, especially the ricotta dumplings & broccolini. Everyone at our table ended up ordering the "German Vacation to Mexico" cocktail, too good to pass up. And save room for dessert!
Plus our server, John, was tremendous. He's so knowledgable about everything on the menu and made the dining experience so much fun!
