Front Room Tavern Ratings and Reviews
I have been coming here for many years and have seen several changes. I have to say, the last few times I've been here, the food is just fine and the service is mediocre. This review was for dinner, we were 8 adults who all eat out a lot. When you sell a bottle of wine, at any price, it is proper to have the guests taste it, this did not happen. A few people in our group had the steak and commented it was too salty. We tried to order dessert and what we ordered was sold out so we decided to order the chocolate chip cookies; which we've had there many times over the years and the waitress touted to our group. They were sold out of the cookies as well so they gave us the molasses cookies, complimentary. They were tasteless. I'm not sure what is going on here but I go here for convenience from time to time and I'm going to change that.
On a separate note, I had breakfast here the next day and, as has happened the last couple of months, the service is VERY slow! It took 30 minutes from the time we ordered, to get tea and 20 minutes for our coffees. I know a lot of people that eat here prior to an appointment or on their way to the airport. This service is unacceptable. I'm disappointed that nothing has changed the last few months. I keep giving them a try, but I'm out of tries.
We were seated timely with reservation, table was great.. with SMU graduation you were very busy but handled it pretty well.. kept us informed about the delay which is the way it should be done... two of our party had not eaten at the FR and raved about the food.. because of the delay the waiter comped the appatizers which was greatly appreciated... later we came back and sat outside for drinks which was fantastic... overall a great experience!!
We went for Mother's Day. They had a Prix Fixe Menu and never was I informed of that! They called on Friday to confirm my reservations and never mentioned it. The service was slow, food was not great for $50 pp. Other reservations were surprised, some left!! Disappointing!! Won't be returning!!
Very disappointed when looked at the menu options from Open Table and was completely different when we were seated at the Front Door and then was told by staff that it's the menu he gave us and nothing else! That should've been a red flag, but did not want to disappoint my daughter who had heard nothing but good things, boy that was a BIG MISTAKE!! Lesson learned, so watch out folks you need to call ahead if you are looking for a certain menu options and hopefully someone will be able to give you the right info!!
Made reservation for Mother's Day brunch. No crowd, nice atmosphere as the staff gave us run of the restaurant. Wait staff was very professional and appropriately attentive. Menu selections were good but not too big to make it hard to choose. Had the bread board, which was really good with fresh pasties, but the orange marmalade was puzzling as it was most orange peels and nothing else. Brunch selections could've been more generous, but was adequate for everyone. Ordered omelette, which was a little rubbery but had delicious roasted potatoes on the side and mushrooms inside. The migas were excellent. The burger was cooked properly, but requested another type of bun/bread but it came on the bun as on the menu, which was disappointing as we'd ordered something else and was promised an exception would be provided. Mimosas were delicious the atmosphere was wonderful as we'd sat on the intimate patio. Nice, hip atmosphere in Highland Park and across the street from SMU. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone for hipness, service great drinks andattentive service. I'm sure that the Lumen Hotel offers excellent service and accommodations as well.
We went here for Easter brunch. The brunch menu online looked great and reasonably priced. But, we did not get a chance to order from that. After we were seated and ordered coffee, we were directed to the buffet. It was the only option, however, it was not advertised on their website, nor was I told this when I confirmed my reservation. It would have been nice to know it was buffet-only ($50/person) beforehand.
I made reservations for Easter brunch. The food was amazing. Omelette bar, prime rib, french macarons, (which were delightful),not your run of the mill buffet food. To accommodate our party, we were given a private room, which was an added bonus and very nice. We were not expecting a buffet and had chosen the restaurant because it did not say buffet on their website. I spoke to someone at the restaurant probably 4 times, and no one mentioned the buffet. We were not prepared for the cost, which seemed high. Communication needs to be better. Overall, it was great, and I will go back.
This is the worst overall experience in a restaurant any of the four of us can remember. It will be very memorable because so many things went wrong. The frites were soggy, three of the main entries were poor and after waiting for our check for about 30 minutes with the staff having no idea how to get the computer to generate it, we left after each couple leaving a $20 tip becasue the service was the best part of a poor meal. We couldn't pay the bill becasue it could not be generated and we left with the approval of the staff. We will never return unless the management of the restaurant apologizes and they provide free meals for the four of us.
Walking distance from SMU. Great place to have a bite or drinks and appetizers before a show or program on campus. Only about 3 blocks from McFarlin Auditorium, the restaurant will valet your car and seem ok with folks coming back after show to pick up so long as you eat there. Food is always great - sometimes the servers seem spread a little thin when it's full, but drinks are refilled promptly and plates removed by roaming servers. It's also pretty noisy when full inside, great patio and probably quieter outside. Definitely recommend.
I often bring clients or potential clients to the Front Room for brunch. Historically, the ambiance, food and service has been outstanding. On Sunday, February--they seated my guest at the wrong table; the service was slow and disorganized; we sent the food back 3 times--overcooked; undercooked and incorrect order. Yes they deducted 12.00 from the bill--but that doesn't make up for the personal disappointment and professional embarrassment
We hit Front Door for an early dinner before an event at SMU McFarlin Auditorium. It's an upscale dining option for the SMU neighborhood. The menu has several options: plates to share, large plates and appetizers. Skip the cheese plate (I've had better and more interesting), and opt for the Shrimp & Grits (huge portion), duck ravioli, or the burger. If you're a Scotch lover, you'll have lots of options beyond the standard Macallens and Glenlivets.
Be aware, if the restaurant is full, it's beyond loud
Once again, Front Room delivered. Minor mixup with one of our 7 dishes was no biggie...as the meal was delicious for everyone. I had the Pork dish (where they prepare it several ways) and it was superb. The brussels sprouts were fantastic. drinks were really good too. Just a great experience. The wait staff and manager are really great, as well.
Front Room Tavern is my favorite Dallas restaurant. Period. For many reasons. As a person with many food allergies, it is difficult to find a restaurant that is delicious and more than willing to work with my challenges. As a frequent diner, the staff remembers me and keeps my allergy list in their computer. Having said all of that, Front Room Tavern is an innovative restaurant and bar, and is a favorite among my friends and family. We love to go before or after SMU events. The menu changes frequently, so the experience is always new. The shrimp and grits are to die for! A British woman at the next table said that the fish and chips were the best that she had ever tasted! The menu is diverse enough that it's always difficult to choose - a great problem! We are always pleased with the results. It is also extremely well run and seems to retain it's staff. Anyway, I'm a fan and very grateful for treating me so well!
Food was good, but not what I would consider excellent. They had a very good selection of wines by the glass, bit my partners first cocktail tasted like dish soap so sent it back.
Waiter was ok. Had to ask him if there were any specials (I heard the waiter at the next table offer the specials but our waiter just pushed us to order without telling us the specials).
It is valet parking only and if you don't already have cash they will not charge an extra 5 or ten so that you can tip the valet. You will have to search out the ATM and pay $4 to withdraw cash to give the valet a tip.
Probably will not go back.
We've dined here many times, mostly for Sunday, brunch. Service is very attentive, but not annoying. Brunch menu has excellent choices and also includes some non-brunch items. I believe their mimosas are the best! I had the egg sandwich and it was so good; eggs benedict is also very good. My granddaughter had the yogurt parfait with berries; she loved it! We will continue making this our brunch stop.
My mother and I went for Thanksgiving Brunch. It was phenomenal. I have never been a fan of Turkey or of sweet potatos. I actually went back for seconds. that is a testament as to how good the chef is. The array of food was overwhelming, there was no way one could sample everything offered. The stellar dish for me was the eggs benedict with the lobster hollandaise. Second runner up was their take on deviled eggs. And as always the desserts were sublime. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. I have always loved this restaurant but this meal exceeed my expectations. The chef must be a magician because he can take what seems like a simple dish and turn it into feast for the senses. The service is also spot on: friendly but not intrusive.
