About Fringale

Fringale, which means "the urge to eat," has been a major contributor to San Francisco's South of Market culinary renaissance. From its opening fourteen years ago, it has remained a favorite dining spot for food lovers, socialites, politicians, artists, celebrities, and journalists. The restaurant's sponged eggshell colored walls, blond wooden chairs, sand and earth toned banquettes and wainscoting, and verdigris bartop create a dining environment that is sophisticated, intimate, and inviting. Fringale is a place where guests can drop in for a glass of wine and snack at the bar or enjoy a tantalizing classic French bistro meal prepared by one of the finest kitchens in San Francisco. Come and experience why Fringale has been consistently rated one of the top French restaurants in San Francisco since its opening.

We live across the country, but have been going to Fringale since it's first review after it opened more than 25 years ago. The food and service are as superb now as then-so happy to see the restaurant continues to thrive with it's simple classic French cuisine made with impeccable ingredients. Bravo!

Lovely French spot, warm, elegant not overly fancy. Very friendly, timely service with a lot of smile and sense of humor. We had Foie Gras Terrine & Hanger Steak; tasty, unpretentious classical French cuisine - cooked and served beautifully and with love!! Met the owner Jean-Marie who keeps everything “rolling nicely". We will definitively be back.

Cozy but 6 person lunch group next to us were so loud it made us think we were being punished for wanting a quiet lunch in nice restaurant, food ok but suggest duck entree needs some green/veg (lentil and fries too carb heavy) service was good...sorry but won’t be back...

This our favorite French restaurant in San Francisco. The duck confit is a special dish that can't be found at many restaurants. Thanks to Jean-Marie, the owner, for wonderful service and French cuisine.

It's a little out of the way but a wonderful French bistro style. Food was great and super reasonable. Great house cocktails and, although I didn't look too closely, a very nice selection of wines. Food was traditional but well and tastefully prepared. At first I felt uneasy because it's a small place, but I was wrong. We intend to go back.

We have been going to Fringale for at least 20 years. The food quality and service has been consistently superb each time we've been there. Everything is extremely well prepared and flavorful, using fresh ingredients. It's always a pleasure anticipating our experience, and equally well reflecting on the evening, whether it be a celebration, as it was this last time, or just an even out at a lovely restaurant!

Fringale was our favorite restaurant when we lived in SF almost 20 years ago. We returned for a day visit and included it for our evening meal. It was as wonderful as we remembered! We had 7:15 reservations and found that we were free to eat much earlier. I called and asked if they could fit us in then and they had an opening in 30 minutes. (5:30 pm) We rushed over, were the first to be seated and by 6 pm they were practically full! The staff are low-key, friendly and extremely efficient. Our waiter was perfect and when I found I had a stain on my sweater half-way through my meal, he appeared out of nowhere with a glass of water and a clean towel. The food was superb: I had the special - the coq au vin and my partner had the duck confit. From bread to dessert it was the kind of meal that makes you feel that all is right with the world. What more could one possibly want?

If you want great food and friendly service this is for you. The location just a couple of blocks from the San Francisco Cal Train station is a plus for meeting folks from the peninsula. Just ignore the construction on 4th street.

Great food as always. It was a Monday, so the waiter did say they were out of a few items, but it was as I remember it. Ever since my one dinner at Fleur de Leis (?) where I learned of Fringale back in 1994, I have been coming to Fringale. It's one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco

We have been going to eat at Fringale for years - and it is always wonderful! The service is attentive, but not overly so; the wine list is good (but not too overpriced); we love the steak (onglet) and duck confit as entrees. I tried the roquefort and spinach ravioli this time and quite enjoyed it; my husband had the frisee salad - yum. It is a smallish restaurant, but not too loud. Overall, we recommend this restaurant highly.

How can you not love going to Fringale for authentic French food served by a very French server in a cozy restaurant that makes you feel like you're family. The food is delicious. The portions are moderate, but who wants to be overly stuffed after a great meal. The duck foigras pate was delicious with the bread. The shrimps with bacon was super delicious. Our entrees of the sable and pork were both superb, and the side of potatoes au gratin were terrific. Oh, the dessert was delicious, too. Parking around the place can be challenging with all the new construction. So just park across the street and pay the $15 dollar parking fee. What else can you do to avoid the frustration and walk across the street to Fringale where great food and wine are waiting.

Professional, fast, and courteous service. The food was good, and well priced for the area. The atmosphere was not upscale, but didn’t feel gaudy.

The food was prepared well, I have a steak while my boyfriend had duck confit. He found it dry, but I found my to be excellent.

Fringale is a gem. Authentic, elegant, perfect service, inimitable prepared dishes, unpretentious--a dying breed. Compared to self-conscious, fussy, pretentious, contrived Cockscomb nearby--well, there is no comparison. Don't waste your $$ at Cockscomb; come to Fringale.

Love the French staff -- appropriately friendly but not pushy "my name is Barry and I'll be your server"-type service. Also love the solid French menu. Happily, this is not a restaurant that is following trends or trying to be "interesting" or creative. Excellent, predictable cuisine, well-executed by a kitchen staff who understands how to cook: Steak perfectly cooked, everything perfectly seasoned, beautiful salads. The atmosphere is also not trying too hard. While it mercifully has not been updated to a slick modern aesthetic, I think it's one area that could use some attention -- if only to dim the lighting and create a bit of atmosphere, a bit of charm. (South Park Cafe nearby (now closed) got that note right; not updated but so irresistibly charming.) Fringale could use a bit of irresistible charm to get people in, but once they're in, they'll stay for the food and the French accents.

We went to celebrate my birthday and it was my husband, his sister, our son and his friend and we all had delicious entrees and loved the appetizers as well. It is nice restaurant with good room to move around and noise level good too. When we come to the City we like to try various French restaurants. I am Spanish Basque, my son's friend's mom is French Basque so Fringale became my choice. I pick most excellent restaurants and Fringale is one of them!!!!!!!

Fringale has been around for more than 20 years. It is one of the French Basque restaurants opened in the City by Hirigoyen & Co. and thus has an excellent pedigree.
We went on a Monday evening and it was not crowded. Perhaps the endless destruction/construction of 4th street deters some folks but it shouldn't. There's on-street parking on Brannan and garages nearby.
We had the lettuce salad, calamari, roquefort and spinach ravioli and the seafood basquaise. Not an item that wasn't tasty and well appreciated. We also had the truffes and mignardises for dessert + coffee.
Good service; a good Bordeaux. An excellent evening. Definitely to be recommended.

This restaurant is not minority friendly. We got seated first as a party of two but had to wait for service while the wait staff fall over the 4 white couples that got seated way after us. It was obvious that we were relegated as if we were a non paying customer. As a result, we had to wait that much longer for our food and it totally ruined our anniversary dinner celebration. I will never go back to this restaurant even for a free meal.

Great food and wine selection. The pastis sauce for the prawn appetizer was something we hadn't tried before and we all loved it. One concern we had related to a fly that died on the table and the kitchen looked a bit old. The rest of the ambiance was awesome.
