Fringale, which means "the urge to eat," has been a major contributor to San Francisco's South of Market culinary renaissance. From its opening fourteen years ago, it has remained a favorite dining spot for food lovers, socialites, politicians, artists, celebrities, and journalists. The restaurant's sponged eggshell colored walls, blond wooden chairs, sand and earth toned banquettes and wainscoting, and verdigris bartop create a dining environment that is sophisticated, intimate, and inviting. Fringale is a place where guests can drop in for a glass of wine and snack at the bar or enjoy a tantalizing classic French bistro meal prepared by one of the finest kitchens in San Francisco. Come and experience why Fringale has been consistently rated one of the top French restaurants in San Francisco since its opening.

Fringale Ratings and Reviews
Fringale has been a favorite spot of ours for two years - since shortly after we moved to San Francisco. It is a great combination of dishes from le Midi down to pays Basque, all with both a Parisian and San Franciscan metropolitan flair that manages to keep true to the origins. From their delightful and seasonal cassoulet, to the foie gras d'oie, coq au vin, and one of our most favorites the crevettes au pastis, I have yet met a dish here I do not like. In addition, Fringale has curated to perfection a selection of wines, both local and French, to pair perfectly their diverse clientele's tastes with each dish on the menu.
If you haven't, eat here.
I enjoyed a very nice lunch at Fringale. I had the calamari appetizer and roast chicken entree. I would have preferred some sort of potatoes with the chicken however was still very good! My empty glass also sat on my table for most of my lunch even though the waitress and bartender passed by me several times.
We had a wonderful time at Fringale. The food is classic French, well executed and unpretentious. The service is outstanding, very attentive, friendly and accommodating. The noise level is fine, even though the restaurant was full it was easy to enjoy our conversation - which is not the case in so many other places these days. And they make a great martini. Overall, a wonderful experience that we will want to repeat!
I've been here many times with family and friends. Always good & creative food, and efficient, friendly service. No snobbery here! Was there 2 nights ago, and though nearly packed-it was quiet enough for unstrained conversation. I have no specific menu recommendations as it has all been excellent in my experience.
We have been going to Fringale's almost since it opened in the late '90's or early 2000's. We go every few years to celebrate our anniversary, go with out of town friends or relatives. The quality of food and experience has been consistently excellent over the years.
Fringale was good. This was our second time here this year. The food is excellent, traditional French bistro food. The tables are very close together, and the restaurant is noisy. We sat near a group of very loud young people, piercing with their voices. Fish choices, and duck were excellent. We would go back there again. Be sure to notice the bar top which is made of copper.
A jewel of a find! Had planned to dine here long time ago but was discouraged by the parking situation. So we decided to have an early Christmas Eve dinner, lucked out on spot on Brannan and had a fabulous holiday meal.
We were welcomed warmly by the bartender, ushered to a windowside table that we forgot we had requested. Our server Andre was warm just so, service was prompt and the food was delicious!
My pre-fixe at $52 started with butter lettuce with boquerones (anchovies) in the cheesy dressing. Had the perfectly fried sole on a bed of baby spinach (substitute for the risotto). M loved his prawns ala plancha and grilled lamb chops. Our tarte tatin took us back to the Fifth Arrondissement in our favorite city.
With a killer martini, a Pinot Noir and two coffees, our tab was about $131. What a deal.
Always great. This is a little gem of a place that when we arrive, we wonder why we don't eat here often. Service is spectacular, very french. Food is always excellent. Very comfortable place to sit and talk with friends or even have a business conversation.
We live across the country, but have been going to Fringale since it's first review after it opened more than 25 years ago. The food and service are as superb now as then-so happy to see the restaurant continues to thrive with it's simple classic French cuisine made with impeccable ingredients. Bravo!
Lovely French spot, warm, elegant not overly fancy. Very friendly, timely service with a lot of smile and sense of humor. We had Foie Gras Terrine & Hanger Steak; tasty, unpretentious classical French cuisine - cooked and served beautifully and with love!! Met the owner Jean-Marie who keeps everything “rolling nicely". We will definitively be back.
Cozy but 6 person lunch group next to us were so loud it made us think we were being punished for wanting a quiet lunch in nice restaurant, food ok but suggest duck entree needs some green/veg (lentil and fries too carb heavy) service was good...sorry but won’t be back...
It's a little out of the way but a wonderful French bistro style. Food was great and super reasonable. Great house cocktails and, although I didn't look too closely, a very nice selection of wines. Food was traditional but well and tastefully prepared. At first I felt uneasy because it's a small place, but I was wrong. We intend to go back.
We have been going to Fringale for at least 20 years. The food quality and service has been consistently superb each time we've been there. Everything is extremely well prepared and flavorful, using fresh ingredients. It's always a pleasure anticipating our experience, and equally well reflecting on the evening, whether it be a celebration, as it was this last time, or just an even out at a lovely restaurant!
Fringale was our favorite restaurant when we lived in SF almost 20 years ago. We returned for a day visit and included it for our evening meal. It was as wonderful as we remembered! We had 7:15 reservations and found that we were free to eat much earlier. I called and asked if they could fit us in then and they had an opening in 30 minutes. (5:30 pm) We rushed over, were the first to be seated and by 6 pm they were practically full! The staff are low-key, friendly and extremely efficient. Our waiter was perfect and when I found I had a stain on my sweater half-way through my meal, he appeared out of nowhere with a glass of water and a clean towel. The food was superb: I had the special - the coq au vin and my partner had the duck confit. From bread to dessert it was the kind of meal that makes you feel that all is right with the world. What more could one possibly want?
Great food as always. It was a Monday, so the waiter did say they were out of a few items, but it was as I remember it. Ever since my one dinner at Fleur de Leis (?) where I learned of Fringale back in 1994, I have been coming to Fringale. It's one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco
We have been going to eat at Fringale for years - and it is always wonderful! The service is attentive, but not overly so; the wine list is good (but not too overpriced); we love the steak (onglet) and duck confit as entrees. I tried the roquefort and spinach ravioli this time and quite enjoyed it; my husband had the frisee salad - yum. It is a smallish restaurant, but not too loud. Overall, we recommend this restaurant highly.
How can you not love going to Fringale for authentic French food served by a very French server in a cozy restaurant that makes you feel like you're family. The food is delicious. The portions are moderate, but who wants to be overly stuffed after a great meal. The duck foigras pate was delicious with the bread. The shrimps with bacon was super delicious. Our entrees of the sable and pork were both superb, and the side of potatoes au gratin were terrific. Oh, the dessert was delicious, too. Parking around the place can be challenging with all the new construction. So just park across the street and pay the $15 dollar parking fee. What else can you do to avoid the frustration and walk across the street to Fringale where great food and wine are waiting.
I've been enjoying delicious dinners at Fringale for years, and it is my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. The setting is intimate, the staff is attentive and professional, and the food is first rate. An evening at Fringale is always a special occasion!
Professional, fast, and courteous service. The food was good, and well priced for the area. The atmosphere was not upscale, but didn’t feel gaudy.
The food was prepared well, I have a steak while my boyfriend had duck confit. He found it dry, but I found my to be excellent.
