We were dining on a Saturday evening and, due to unavoidable scheduling issues, one in our party was forced to arrive late (10:00pm for a 9:15 reservation). The restaurant wasn’t crowded and consequently, they were anxious to shut things down early. They sort of pressured the two people that were dining to order for the 3rd, to know if the 3rd would be eating. It was uncomfortable for them. Our late arrival got there as soon as he could and they ‘sort of’ accommodated him - allowed him an opportunity to have dinner provided he was willing to eat the one entree they were offering.
Fringale is a really nice place. We don’t live in SF but had a wonderful meal there years ago and were looking forward to returning. It certainly wasn’t their fault that we had a late arrival but would have appreciated an accommodation that went above and beyond. Instead we felt like we were keeping them from shutting down and going home early.
Sorry they weren’t more crowded on a Saturday night. There’s a lot of construction right outside their door and maybe that’s been challenging for their business as well.
Food was great. Room is comfortable. Hope to try Fringale once again without any issues - from our side or theirs.
The risotto was just boiled rice, not very tasty... and the sole wasn’t really sole. Hanger steak and dessert were good though.
Tried this restaurant on the advice of various web reviews because we wanted to get to know SOMA a little better. Fringale has been in this location for many years, and the neighborhood has grown up around it. We loved the intimate ambience which is enhanced by the corner windows which bring in so much light that the intimacy is not dark and claustrophobic but warm and open. We had a wonderful waiter who was friendly and attended us carefully and promptly but didn't hover. After an appetizer of a trio of cheeses, my husband had the night's special of coq au vin, which he said was outstanding, and I had the petrale over an artichoke risotto, both of which were cooked perfectly and delicious. Our finicky daughter had the shrimp appetizer as her dinner and also enjoyed that. We couldn't resist ordering the tarte tatin for dessert; the apples were as soft and sweet as butter, but the crust was amazing - flaky and light. We'll definitely be back.
Cozy restaurant with bar cocktails, wine assortment and prompt seating for our 5:30 reservation. Enough variety on the menu to please our tastes. Dessert was yummy. Plan to frequent again soon.
Great service - attentive without being overbearing. Salads and mains were fresh and amazing!
Great atmosphere and ambiance. Service was amazing and food was fantastic, would definitely recommend. Great little French restaurant
Good food, good service. Lovely French atmosphere.
I was in Town for work, and did not have plans one evening I checked opentable for a neighborhood gem, and chose this lovely place. I had an excellent meal with superb service. Quite inexpensive for the quality. I’d love to go back with friends.
Delicious, fresh, cooked to perfection traditional French food served with a smile. What else to ask for?
Great truly french restaurant
We had a wonderful anniversary dinner and an excellent dinning experience at Frjngale. It started when the owner greeted us with his warm friendly smile. This place is quaint and the servers are attentive to their customers. The food is delicious and worth the value as well their wine selections! I would highly recommend
Hadn't been to Fringale in years. It was a great evening - terrific food, quiet but lively, and great service.
Great food, great cocktails, and great service.
I always enjoy Fringale. It really is a neighborhood gem, that has managed to please customers for many years. The food is very good, the service is warm and friendly, and the prices are not over the top.
Wonderful restaurant. It was our first time dining there, and we absolutely enjoyed the excellent service, great food, and warm ambiance.
Very nice setting, great staff.
Unfortunately, the food is simply mediocre. Calamari appetizer was nice. Fish main course was not worthwhile - bland sole on a pile of simple rice (oops, i mean risotto). The hazelnut dessert cake was horrible - way to sweet and artificial tasting.. leaving a terrible taste in our mouths and a bad way to finish an otherwise forgettable meal.
Excellent food, great service, extremely friendly, and quiet. Go!!
A pleasant restaurant with delicious food and wine.
First time there. Foods are delicious, portions are good, waiters/waitress are friendly. Love it and will visit again.
Went here on a recommendation during restaurant week and was not disappointed. it's a smallish place, quiet, a small bar and very comfortable ambiance. Service was top shelf as was the food; good portions, nicely presented and left me wishing there was a bit more. Good selections of wine by the glass that complimented the menu nicely. All in all, a neighborhood gem that we will visit again.
Fringale never fails to deliver! Fantastic food and warm service. 👍👍👍
Love Fringale. Always great food and service. Highly recommend it.
Great meal, but we felt rushed by the servers. They didn't give us time to enjoy our before dinner cocktails and didn't pick up on our statements of surprise.. "Wow why is food is here so soon?"
Fringale has been a go-to spot for me and my family for 25 years. Love the shrimp in pastis, can hardly ever not order it as a starter, but in addition to standards the menu always has new options. Very hard to maintain this level of consistent excellence over such a long period. Bravo!
The food at Fringale is very very good. But, unfortunately, this visit the service wasn't up to par - which is unusual for Fringale. Throughout the lunch, the water was never refilled, even though my guest's glasses were completely empty - and our server was somewhat curt.
But, I'll continue to go to Fringale, and hope that this visit was an exception.
Fringale is a lovely, small, authentic restaurant, where you can count on very good food at a very fair price.
Nice start to SF restaurant week.
Excellent food and service. It is a testament to how fabulous Fringale is that people are still visiting in spite of the construction out front!! It will be great when the subway is finished!!
This is a small restaurant.
Despite the fact of many excellent restaurants in San Francisco, this restaurant offers still very excellent dinners in the more traditional french way
The servers seems to be well trained.
I used the restaurant to have a quired business dinner with 4 people close to Moscone center. Everybody found it was very good.
I was there on a Monday evening and it was full.
I would not label it as very fancy or to impress people with high specialty plates.
Quality food and price are very good for San Francisco.
This was our first visit and, therefore, we did not know the exact location until arriving. Much to our surprise we found there was major construction being done in front of and surrounding the restaurant, even on a weekend evening. Parking difficult and walking also difficult. Learned this will be a long process as it is the underground work for public transportation into and out of dowtown SF from the train station, as well as the proposed Transbay Terminal.
The meal was not quite up to snuff as my previous reviews. The chicken was a tad dry this time, but beef carpaccio salad and tarte tatin were delicious. Our guest ate her salad inordinately slow that probably screwed up the kitchen timing. I was quite uncomfortable as well as I could see the staff continually checking, but not in an obstrusive way. The Vacqueras that was recommended by the waiter was excellent.
What a great restaurant! We had a wonderful Friday night dinner at Fringale. For starters we tried the foie gras, the prawns in pastis/tomato sauce and the crab napoleon. All were excellent. For entrees, we had the roast chicken and the rack of lamb. The lamb was perfectly prepared and absolutely delicious. Great French fries too. For dessert we shared the hazelnut mousse cake, and we loved it. We can't wait to go back.
Friendly service, delicious French food, good value.
Great Restaurant with Excellent food. We will differently be back!
Thank you, Bob S. from Reno
Fringale has been a favorite spot of ours for two years - since shortly after we moved to San Francisco. It is a great combination of dishes from le Midi down to pays Basque, all with both a Parisian and San Franciscan metropolitan flair that manages to keep true to the origins. From their delightful and seasonal cassoulet, to the foie gras d'oie, coq au vin, and one of our most favorites the crevettes au pastis, I have yet met a dish here I do not like. In addition, Fringale has curated to perfection a selection of wines, both local and French, to pair perfectly their diverse clientele's tastes with each dish on the menu.
If you haven't, eat here.
I enjoyed a very nice lunch at Fringale. I had the calamari appetizer and roast chicken entree. I would have preferred some sort of potatoes with the chicken however was still very good! My empty glass also sat on my table for most of my lunch even though the waitress and bartender passed by me several times.
No question about it, Fringale is a wonderful French bistro. Their menu and service have, over the years, consistently been outstanding. Go there for lunch or dinner.
Food was quite good. Server was pleasant but wasn’t very attentive. For example, brought coffee but didn’t bring cream, never filled water glasses even though the restaurant was almost empty when we ordered coffee.
We had a wonderful time at Fringale. The food is classic French, well executed and unpretentious. The service is outstanding, very attentive, friendly and accommodating. The noise level is fine, even though the restaurant was full it was easy to enjoy our conversation - which is not the case in so many other places these days. And they make a great martini. Overall, a wonderful experience that we will want to repeat!
