About Fringale

Fringale, which means "the urge to eat," has been a major contributor to San Francisco's South of Market culinary renaissance. From its opening fourteen years ago, it has remained a favorite dining spot for food lovers, socialites, politicians, artists, celebrities, and journalists. The restaurant's sponged eggshell colored walls, blond wooden chairs, sand and earth toned banquettes and wainscoting, and verdigris bartop create a dining environment that is sophisticated, intimate, and inviting. Fringale is a place where guests can drop in for a glass of wine and snack at the bar or enjoy a tantalizing classic French bistro meal prepared by one of the finest kitchens in San Francisco. Come and experience why Fringale has been consistently rated one of the top French restaurants in San Francisco since its opening.

Professional, fast, and courteous service. The food was good, and well priced for the area. The atmosphere was not upscale, but didn’t feel gaudy.

The food was prepared well, I have a steak while my boyfriend had duck confit. He found it dry, but I found my to be excellent.

Fringale is a gem. Authentic, elegant, perfect service, inimitable prepared dishes, unpretentious--a dying breed. Compared to self-conscious, fussy, pretentious, contrived Cockscomb nearby--well, there is no comparison. Don't waste your $$ at Cockscomb; come to Fringale.

Excellent and authentic French food with wonderful service. Amusing, excellent waiter whom we all enjoyed very much; he's been there since the restaurant opened over 30 years ago. Very much recommended; a wonderful place to go for a special occasion.

Love the French staff -- appropriately friendly but not pushy "my name is Barry and I'll be your server"-type service. Also love the solid French menu. Happily, this is not a restaurant that is following trends or trying to be "interesting" or creative. Excellent, predictable cuisine, well-executed by a kitchen staff who understands how to cook: Steak perfectly cooked, everything perfectly seasoned, beautiful salads. The atmosphere is also not trying too hard. While it mercifully has not been updated to a slick modern aesthetic, I think it's one area that could use some attention -- if only to dim the lighting and create a bit of atmosphere, a bit of charm. (South Park Cafe nearby (now closed) got that note right; not updated but so irresistibly charming.) Fringale could use a bit of irresistible charm to get people in, but once they're in, they'll stay for the food and the French accents.

We went to celebrate my birthday and it was my husband, his sister, our son and his friend and we all had delicious entrees and loved the appetizers as well. It is nice restaurant with good room to move around and noise level good too. When we come to the City we like to try various French restaurants. I am Spanish Basque, my son's friend's mom is French Basque so Fringale became my choice. I pick most excellent restaurants and Fringale is one of them!!!!!!!

Fringale has been around for more than 20 years. It is one of the French Basque restaurants opened in the City by Hirigoyen & Co. and thus has an excellent pedigree.
We went on a Monday evening and it was not crowded. Perhaps the endless destruction/construction of 4th street deters some folks but it shouldn't. There's on-street parking on Brannan and garages nearby.
We had the lettuce salad, calamari, roquefort and spinach ravioli and the seafood basquaise. Not an item that wasn't tasty and well appreciated. We also had the truffes and mignardises for dessert + coffee.
Good service; a good Bordeaux. An excellent evening. Definitely to be recommended.

This restaurant is not minority friendly. We got seated first as a party of two but had to wait for service while the wait staff fall over the 4 white couples that got seated way after us. It was obvious that we were relegated as if we were a non paying customer. As a result, we had to wait that much longer for our food and it totally ruined our anniversary dinner celebration. I will never go back to this restaurant even for a free meal.

This is a great French restaurant that has been in business over 20 years. The food is consistently fantastic, nice low light atmosphere, popular. The classic French dishes like duck confit are terrific. Highly recommend it!

Great food and wine selection. The pastis sauce for the prawn appetizer was something we hadn't tried before and we all loved it. One concern we had related to a fly that died on the table and the kitchen looked a bit old. The rest of the ambiance was awesome.

Hands down one of the best charcuterie and cheese selections of any restaurant I've visited in San Francisco. The food is purely unadulterated. If you're looking for a nice date spot, this restaurant will certainly impress.

We had a great dinner at Fringale. One of the specials was an heirloom tomato salad and it was delicious. We also tried the prawns in pasts with tomatoes. For entrees we tried the chicken, the rack of lamb and the steak. All were very good, but the lamb was spectacular. We can't wait to go back.

This has been a long time favorite. This time, the service was inattentive. The food was good, but seemed to have slipped a bit. Service has always been a hallmark, so poor service was a major disappointment. The lack of AC made the restaurant quite warm and the wait for service seem all the worse. We've taken this off our recommendation list for now. Perhaps a coincidence but for the firts time we didn't recognize any of the usual staff.

Fringale's is a pleasant constant in a changing San Francisco. More than a Bistro, but still adds Coq au Vin and other Bistro items to a French-themed restaurant menu. Advice on menu selections and accompanying wines was straightforward and helpful. Dinner was professionally, attentively, and cheerfully served. The check, for about $50 per diner (including wine and tip) showed good value.

This is the 1st time we are here. The restaurant is small but warm. the waiter welcomed us and explained the food in details.

We got prawn appetizer, duck confit, seafood, and see bass for entries.
The pawn is flavorful. Confit and seafood meets expectation. See bass is well cooked in some kind of Asian-fusion sauce.

Overall the food is good, but not amazing. Maybe this is the philosophy of this restaurant. Just traditional style and taste. People will come back again and again to get the familiar taste.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed a 3 course meal at Fringale, and we felt that each course was delicious, well prepared, well portioned, and of good value. Both seafood and steak were tender and flavorful. Knowledgeable, polite staff facilitated a seamlessly romantic evening. The ambiance is comfortable, clean and classy. This is a great spot for casual romance; not pretentious or over the top.

My husband pulled this off OpenTable for a belated birthday dinner for me - fabulous choice! Country French - service was exceptional, and the food excellent and reasonably priced. The Duck Confit was amazing, succulent and beautifully paired. My husband had the calamari and loved it; I had the foie gras and the sole. Both were lovely. This was a casual weekend trip to SFO - if we lived there, we'd be at Fingale every month!

Entree variety covers every palette. The sole was terrific. My boyfriend ordered the red snapper entree and a chocolate cake-like dessert; he said everything tasted great.
Small restaurant, great for dates or an informal business dinner. Staff were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable of both menus (food and drinks).
Definitely on our radar to recommend and return.
