Fringale, which means "the urge to eat," has been a major contributor to San Francisco's South of Market culinary renaissance. From its opening fourteen years ago, it has remained a favorite dining spot for food lovers, socialites, politicians, artists, celebrities, and journalists. The restaurant's sponged eggshell colored walls, blond wooden chairs, sand and earth toned banquettes and wainscoting, and verdigris bartop create a dining environment that is sophisticated, intimate, and inviting. Fringale is a place where guests can drop in for a glass of wine and snack at the bar or enjoy a tantalizing classic French bistro meal prepared by one of the finest kitchens in San Francisco. Come and experience why Fringale has been consistently rated one of the top French restaurants in San Francisco since its opening.

All good! Food was delicious, nice atmosphere. Service was a little slow but not bad.

I must start this review by saying I really love Fringale and have been many times, however I rarely write reviews. I really felt I needed to review the restaurant though after our visit on Friday.

So our movie ended later than expected and although the kitchen wanted to close and we are 30 minutes after our reservation time, the team (who are always very nice) seated us and gave us normal service (great) and great food with out rushing us at all, even though we were the only diners left in the restaurant.

Excellent food as always, over the top service. Thanks Fringale!

Service was good, wine was great, but the Food was lackluster.
The sauces were too heavy with butter and lacking in fresh flavor.

Always great, old school delivery amongst a sea of techie noise. A business lunch staple. Will always be back.

Service was not very good. The waiter was rushing around and kind of threw the food on the table. He forgot my glass of wine and had to be reminded after waiting some time. Hardly any attention from the waiter at all!
Good is good and I will give it one more try then that’s it. Many other restaurants to choose from.

As always Fringale was a blockbuster. An extrodinary chef keeps the menu interesting and creative even when you have been there dozens of times. The wait staff was a little wooden but that was overshadowed by the presentation and fabulous food.

A bit pricey but worth the occasional splurge.

Food was relatively good but the server was curt and not very helpful when we asked any questions -- certainly not what you'd expect for entrees in the $30 price range. He plonked down the appetizer, the wine and the desert and never even checked in on us after delivering the main course without any fanfare.

This was my second time to Fringale. Top ratings fir everything. Paris 75 cocktail was fabulous and food was delicious. Take Uber or Lyft though as there is a lot of construction on the Fourth street. Highly recommend!

Overall quality very good with the exception of the mussels which too vinegary. Fois Gra and fish dishes were terrific as was the apple dessert.

This is the second time I have eaten here and this time it was disappointing. The asparagus soup was good and so were the desserts, which is why I am giving it two stars. But the main dish - the vegetarian entree, an Israeli-style (large and yellowish) couscous with squash and other veges - was really disappointing. First of all, it was extremely oily - there were literally pools of oil left on the plate after I finished, and I although I restrained myself so as not to gross out my friend, I kept having an urge to literally mop up the extra oil with a napkin. Also, this time there were hardly any veges at all - maybe just 3 or 4 small chunks of squash and 2-3 other small vege pieces (maybe 15-20% of the quantity of veges one might get in a side of vegetables for example). So for $25, I basically got a pile of couscous drowning in oil with several small scattered pieces of veges. It was edible, but just barely, and I left with that somewhat grossed-out feeling you get from consuming tons of oil. This is the main vegetarian entree on the menu, so you would think they would take more care with it. Pretty disappointing. It is only two blocks from the CalTrain, though - so location is great if you are taking Caltrain.

Fringales has long been a favorite of mine for special occasions or last minute dining decision. Food and service are always great in pleasant setting. Lamb chops are especially good but entire menu is solid.

We were dining on a Saturday evening and, due to unavoidable scheduling issues, one in our party was forced to arrive late (10:00pm for a 9:15 reservation). The restaurant wasn’t crowded and consequently, they were anxious to shut things down early. They sort of pressured the two people that were dining to order for the 3rd, to know if the 3rd would be eating. It was uncomfortable for them. Our late arrival got there as soon as he could and they ‘sort of’ accommodated him - allowed him an opportunity to have dinner provided he was willing to eat the one entree they were offering.

Fringale is a really nice place. We don’t live in SF but had a wonderful meal there years ago and were looking forward to returning. It certainly wasn’t their fault that we had a late arrival but would have appreciated an accommodation that went above and beyond. Instead we felt like we were keeping them from shutting down and going home early.

Sorry they weren’t more crowded on a Saturday night. There’s a lot of construction right outside their door and maybe that’s been challenging for their business as well.

Food was great. Room is comfortable. Hope to try Fringale once again without any issues - from our side or theirs.

The risotto was just boiled rice, not very tasty... and the sole wasn’t really sole. Hanger steak and dessert were good though.

Tried this restaurant on the advice of various web reviews because we wanted to get to know SOMA a little better. Fringale has been in this location for many years, and the neighborhood has grown up around it. We loved the intimate ambience which is enhanced by the corner windows which bring in so much light that the intimacy is not dark and claustrophobic but warm and open. We had a wonderful waiter who was friendly and attended us carefully and promptly but didn't hover. After an appetizer of a trio of cheeses, my husband had the night's special of coq au vin, which he said was outstanding, and I had the petrale over an artichoke risotto, both of which were cooked perfectly and delicious. Our finicky daughter had the shrimp appetizer as her dinner and also enjoyed that. We couldn't resist ordering the tarte tatin for dessert; the apples were as soft and sweet as butter, but the crust was amazing - flaky and light. We'll definitely be back.

Cozy restaurant with bar cocktails, wine assortment and prompt seating for our 5:30 reservation. Enough variety on the menu to please our tastes. Dessert was yummy. Plan to frequent again soon.

We had a wonderful anniversary dinner and an excellent dinning experience at Frjngale. It started when the owner greeted us with his warm friendly smile. This place is quaint and the servers are attentive to their customers. The food is delicious and worth the value as well their wine selections! I would highly recommend

Unfortunately, the food is simply mediocre. Calamari appetizer was nice. Fish main course was not worthwhile - bland sole on a pile of simple rice (oops, i mean risotto). The hazelnut dessert cake was horrible - way to sweet and artificial tasting.. leaving a terrible taste in our mouths and a bad way to finish an otherwise forgettable meal.

Went here on a recommendation during restaurant week and was not disappointed. it's a smallish place, quiet, a small bar and very comfortable ambiance. Service was top shelf as was the food; good portions, nicely presented and left me wishing there was a bit more. Good selections of wine by the glass that complimented the menu nicely. All in all, a neighborhood gem that we will visit again.
