Rare to find such quality and service in North America. Attention to detail of every course recalled fine Parisian dining for me.
I would recommend they offer a special cocktail to accompany each tasting menu!

Third time to this restaurant and never disappointed. The progression of the dishes was flawless. The depth of each built on the last creating a wonderful taste experience.

Nice fine dining option up North. Unique menu which replaced the tasting menu before Covid.
However, server needs to be better trained to explain the new menu. We was kept on telling “everything explained on the website.” Until I asked if he was accusing for not doing homework prior to the visit.
Also, restaurant serves nice and unique sake. Server has absolutely no knowledge on. Didn’t even know where to find the requested info right in the bottle.

This is my tenth visit to Frilu now (harder to count the times now that I've gone to them so often over the years), this time for my 30th birthday. The amount of thoughtfulness that goes into serving their guests is incredible. JV, Sandra, Daniel, So, and co. are all incredibly charismatic, friendly, and well-versed in the food and drink that they serve. The dishes are astounding as always, and you can't go wrong with any of the a la carte dishes or the tasting menu - whichever is in season during these times.

I will follow and support JV and his extraordinary team wherever they may go in the future - and would suggest that anyone with a receptive culinary mind to enjoy what Frilu has to offer. Go at least once a season, you'll love the diversity in the dishes!

As a devoted fan of ‘tasting menu dining experiences ‘, the opening of the ‘ Nordic/Japanese’ influenced “Frilu”, just a short drive from my home was a God sent!
Sadly, the onset of this Covid pandemic has deprived me of such enjoyment. For over 6 months I have been yearning for their re-opening. After noticing a month ago of their dine-in option is returning, I decided to pay it an overdue visit. Even though, for now, they will only be offering a la carte dishes.
The dinner I shared with my foodie partner tonight was near perfection! After such a long hiatus, the chef and his kitchen miraculously did not miss a single beat! Every dish was uniquely conceived, lovingly prepared and innovatively crafted and presented. The clever use of Bincho-tan charcoal, in a western kitchen, for grilling mushrooms, duck, beef rib etc was a masterful touch, resulting in gorgeous smoky aroma of some key ingredients taking the center stage!
We shared the following dishes (repeating for some of the outstanding ones):
- Foie de Poulet Parfait ( Chicken Liver mousse, toasted Sourdough crisp )
- Fagottini di Bisonte ( Pulled Bison Short-rib in pastry with sauce )
- Lobster on Crispy Rice ( Lobster meat dressed with chive, horseradish emulsion )
- B.C Tuna & Smoke ( lightly smoked Tataki Tuna paired with Fennel, Konbu Oil & Parsley cream ) X 2
- Mineral/Briny ( Char-grilled Maitake mushroom, Ikura foam ) X 2
- Duck/Grain ( Char-grilled aged Duck Breast, creamed corn, char-grilled whole scallions )
- Dark & Light ( Chocolate granite, strawberry, Chantilly ).
Overall, every dish we ordered was a hit! From the super velvety smooth Foie pate to the buttery, crispy thin phyllo-pastry wrapper for the Bison, to the interesting textured and tasty lobster crispy Nigiri, to the lightly smoked, melt-in-the-mouth fresh Tuna, to the ultra-aromatic and delicious char-grilled duck, to the mouth-watering Maitake and Ikura etc. Even the simple char-grilled scallions tasted so amazingly delicious!
Wow!!

Our second time to Frilu. We had their tasting menu the first time with a wine pairing. The menu is still very good, we shared a number of the appetizers and entrees between the four of us. It was all excellent and allowed us to try different menu items. Also great selection of Sake. Thanks again

The first time we dined here was September 2018 and since then every visit continues to delight us! There is a whimsical feel to some of their dishes which engages all of your senses. Their food is not only beautiful but also perfectly prepared. While it's not what I would consider cheap, we usually leave feeling like the bill was less than what we should be paying! I always look forward to dining here and would highly recommend!

Another wonderful dinner. They have gone back to a more traditional menu than the forced tasting menu which I enjoyed better. We ordered the dishes which appealed to us and shared.

The ambiance is fantastic, the food amazing. Still our favourite restaurant in Toronto.

Worth the drive to Thornhill. Friendly service, incredible food! It's a fixed tasting menu with optional beverage pairings (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). We opted out of the pairings and had a bottle of wine from a lean but sufficiently broad and reasonably-priced wine list. The courses were well-paced and service was attentive. The place settings and plating were uncommon and beautiful... but the food was the real star. Each dish was thoughtfully composed, with complex layering of flavors and top-quality ingredients. My husband usually abhors beets and lamb... but he savoured both the slow beet dish and the aged lamb that Frilu served us. The chef and his team are geniuses! Frilu was an exquisite dining experience!

Clean minimalist spot in Thornhill Village. Food was thoughtful and delicious. One of the better tasting menus I have had in recent memory. Servers were friendly however a couple courses my pairing was served 10-15 minutes before the next course arrived and I was finished by the time the next course came. One of the courses they topped me up so I could experience the pairing with the course...Would return!

The dishes are very unique, creative, prepared in a non-traditional way, beautifully presented and of course deliciously awesome. Love the cutlery, glasses and the chopsticks resting on a tiny rock. The shape of them makes everything drink and dish more enjoyable. Oh! the pairing! its a Must. The staff, they have a genuine smile. Very knowledgeable, attentive and they make sure that you are taken care of and never forgotten. i think next time will be my 10th time, and I cant wait to be wowed again.

What can I say. Second time coming to Frilu has been another fantastic experience. With the theme of winter, Frilu has done a fantastic job of guiding us through the cold with their well thought-out menu. Service is great and the bottle of Ontario "champagne Kombucha" is amazing. Kudos to Frilu and their teaming for delivering high standard tasting menu and drinks. We will be back. Hopefully soon!

To kick off the New Year and to help us forget about all those pathetic, mass-produced party food. My foodie partner and I decided to pay a visit to this neighborhood dining destination for a round of innovative and refined Nordic/Japanese fusion cooking by Chefs Troiano and Sakata.

Wow! What an enjoyable meal from start to finish!

Both chef Troiana and Sakata really out did themselves with this new menu offering. IMO, the best and most delicious of our four visits! Every dish possesses its own uniquely independent and diverse appeal, both in terms of taste profile and textural interplay. Even a simple ‘amuse‘ skewer of lettuce topped with house made sweet chickpea miso dressing and crunchy pumpkin seed managed to garner an head nodding ‘wow’ approval from us. A few humble nuggets of juicy, piping hot, turnips with a surprising green herbal filling could well be one of the tastiest morsels of root vegetable I have ever eaten! Other stand out dishes include the warm Oysters, the sous-vide Scallops paired with a home-made ' oyster sauce tasting ' beef garum, the melt-in-the-mouth, fork tender braised Bison short-ribs paired with a most aromatic red-wine based sauce, the pan seared, salt-cured Blue Cod with sweet, house wasabi foam.......etc.
Remembering we have already savored the duck and rice dish from our previous fall visit, Chef Troiano automatically substituted the duck with some perfectly cooked and tender Ontario Angus Striploin! What a nice touch and gesture! This type of attention and professional approach alone is well worth our repetitive visit. Coupled with the great food, great value and great service, making this place our ' neighborhood canteen ' is a natural no brainer!

Best restaurant I tried so far in Canada (including some top ones such as Toque, Canoe). Top in the modern gourmet entry level restaurant. Would make it into the bib gourmand category in a top restaurant market such as Copenhagen, NYC, Chicago.

A fantastic tasting menu with attentive service from the entire staff. The wine pairing was fantastic and the ambiance was very good. This type of experience is usually only available downtown Toronto so having it up here is great. Good value and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a fine dining experience and would return there myself when the menu changes.
