Friesian Gastro Pub
The Friesian accommodates seating for over 80 people inside (including our unique centrally-located bar), and when the weather warms up we will open our 20-person back patio and 50-person rooftop deck – a first for Michigan Street!
The Friesian is co-owned and operated by local restaurant industry veteran Craig Jones, along with co-owners Zan Lamkin and Phil Rienstra. All three owners live in Grand Rapids and are excited to bring a gastro pub with a fun atmosphere and great menu to the Midtown Neighborhood.
We intend to change the menu regularly with some globally-inspired selections, but not stray too far from what you’d expect in a neighborhood gastro pub. So you’ll have to keep coming back to see what’s new.

Great service. Drinks and sprouts were wonderful. Chili with cinnamon roll was excellent and unique. Chicken bolognese needed more sauce. Ribs were huge. Baklava was good; jalapeño ice cream only need to try once. Carrot cake very good and served 4. Would recommend to friends.
This was my first visit and I loved it. There was a good selection for me as a vegetarian while the rest of my party found plenty of good entrees to order. It was quiet enough to easily converse.
They were really accommodating for food sensitivities and allergies. The vegan Mac n cheese was great ad their potato wedges were great too! We sat on the back patio that was warmed and it was pleasant. The service was great as well!

Friesian offered the most perfect setting for a much needed moms night out. 3 girlfriends and myself had a reservation for 6pm and ended up staying until closing! With a complete non alcoholic cocktail menu available my group of sober ladies had plenty of options to keep us hydrated and pleased as we shared plates of apps and even a few entrees. Plenty of vegan and gluten free options also made this group of high maintenance hunnies very happy! The service staff was friendly and attentive and our only complaint is that we wish we knew about the garden in the back before we sat inside! All in all, a five star experience.
Our server was awesome and super friendly! We went for brunch and mimosas. I got their chicken and waffles, everything was delicious. The music played was great and not too loud where we couldn’t hear each other. We can’t wait to go back and try something else on the menu.
Carrot cake is amazing and the spicy margarita has a good kick!

Our server was great, food was just so-so. Warm beet salad was sitting in at least a cup of liquid. Was more like warm beet soup with greens.

Pretty good food. However the burger was supposed to be a half pound and it did not appear to be I would guess not even before being cooked. Potatoes wedges would have been way better without truffle oil on them. Pork belly appetizer was over done and had a charcoal taste. Other than that it was fine. I would try it again. They may have had an off night or something.
Modern, interesting atmosphere with friendly service and excellent food. Was happy I went by for the first time finally. Got a short rib and poached egg brunch dish that was super tasty.

The brussel sprouts app was delicious, crispy and flavorful. I had the pork ribs which was a generous portion, tender and deliciously spiced up.

The food here was good—not “great”, but good. A fine urban restaurant and. Ice for a change, it is strange how the menu is both versatile and not versatile all the same?
The focus on BBQ was almost unnecessary on certain dishes (the Brussels sprout appetizer is served adjourned with a beef that is more reminiscent of the jerky in chew tins). And while I like a chef not scared of spice and seasoning, they were a bit heavy handed with salt which is a comment from a few different reviews. It wasn’t off putting, but comparable restaurants like Wolfgangs or The Reserve seem to find a better balance with seasoning.
Chicken was raw at the bone which was the biggest issue, but not worth complaining about (minor and small). Overall decent atmosphere and a good alternative, but not a weekly or monthly staple.

Great menu and the food was delicious. We did the Brunch and had the French press coffee with some crème whiskey. Amazing. Service was awesome as well. Definitely will go back.

The sprouts were amazing! Unlike any other. A little bit of kick amd resting in a cream sauce that I wanted to literally drink it was so delicious! The texas brisket pile was also amazing. To top it off we ended with jalapeño and fig ice cream on top of baklava - truly an adventure! And the cocktails were unique and well crafted.
It was a Halloween night and the DJ was starting at 8pm. Overall great time and exactly what we hoped and expected.
What an amazing meal. The appetizers we had were all fantastic, and my brisket sandwich was massive and delicious. You certainly get what you pay for at Friesian, I can't recommend this place enough!

Great setting on the roof top, excellent roasted zucchini soup starter, good beer and wine options. the brisket on toast was disappointing - very fatty, little sauce.
