After sitting vacant for a few years, we renovated the former “Lord’s Chapel” building just down the hill from Michigan Street’s Medical Mile corridor into The Friesian Gastro Pub. In addition to having a full bar, we serve up comfort food with an eclectic twist.

The Friesian accommodates seating for over 80 people inside (including our unique centrally-located bar), and when the weather warms up we will open our 20-person back patio and 50-person rooftop deck – a first for Michigan Street!

The Friesian is co-owned and operated by local restaurant industry veteran Craig Jones, along with co-owners Zan Lamkin and Phil Rienstra. All three owners live in Grand Rapids and are excited to bring a gastro pub with a fun atmosphere and great menu to the Midtown Neighborhood.

We intend to change the menu regularly with some globally-inspired selections, but not stray too far from what you’d expect in a neighborhood gastro pub. So you’ll have to keep coming back to see what’s new.

Excellent food and drinks, however, the service is much to be desired. Reservation was for “covered outdoors” which was a chilly, poorly heated patio; asked for an indoor table, but told none available even though there was only 3 other occupied tables at the time (530p). Ended up at the bar instead - frustrating to watch waitstaff just standing and chatting… I would have expected them to be hustling if they were so “busy” that they couldn’t accommodate us at the open 2+ dozen tables. Even bartender not very attentive at first. Sadly the experience will probably keep us from returning, because the food was outstanding.

We love Friesian’s menu and cocktails. Their happy hour is a great way to beat the crowd or an early start for a show at DeVos. Their room can get loud with music, cocktails stirring and an the ever-present high-pitched or cigar-club-wanna-be-loud talker. Something you will find anywhere. The decor is great and service fantástica (Madison, our server, was knowledgeable, attentive and frequently checked on us. Love it.

I’ve been a few times. The brunch is delicious. The dinner I’m almost always disappointed with what I ordered. Last night three of us ordered the lobster bisque and we all stopped eating after a few bites. Pasta was not very flavorful. Drinks were good, dessert was just okay. Food took a long time to come out. Service was okay.

A friend and I had an early dinner on a Tuesday night. We easily found parking right in front of the restaurant. Food was pretty good; we both had the brie BLT and truffle fries. Sandwich was delicious. The truffle fries could have been cooked a bit longer - they were somewhat mushy but with very good flavor. The pickle served with our sandwiches was spicy enough to need a warning. Drinks were fine, not remarkable. Service was good. Despite being not very crowded it was somewhat loud. Overall a decent experience.

Wonton soup was sooo good! Everyone was happy with their meals, but the cocktails fell short. I’d suggest just keeping it simple with the drinks and pass on the cocktails. But I would definitely come back for dinner. Waitress was really nice and did a great job.

We were first time visitors during Restaurant Week. We thoroughly enjoyed the offerings. The portions were a nice size. My husband finished all of his but our friend and I took home leftover entree. We also tried an appetizer, the Frites & Fondue which was yummy. We will be back!!

Terrific appetizers. We had the Brussels Sprouts with shaved beef. Several different layers of flavor. We'll go back and make a meal out of the appetizers. Entrée's were very good. Stuffed Salmon, Sausage with Oriechette and squash.

The food was great and you get a lot of it. I had the Seasonal Depression cocktail and it was fantastic. Our server was nice, but would have liked them to be more attentive. It was busy so that could very well be why…not a big issue. The atmosphere is amazing. Beautiful decor and it feel like home. My only complaint was the noise level was high and I had a hard time hearing my friends. All in all, I would definitely recommend.

Everything was wonderful. My wife and I loved the Bao Buns. Also if you can add the mushrooms that come with the frites and filets to the Wonton Soup I think would be a great addition. All around 10/10 dining experience.

The venue is well appointed and has a neighborhood vibe, which is nice. The noise level is higher than I'd like for dining, but to be fair, it is a bar too. The service was slow, in part because it was pretty busy, but slower than it should have been. The food itself was delicious. We would eat there again.

Took 20+ minutes to have server come once seated. Server provided great service once they were told that our table was theirs. Good portion sizes but food lacked flavors as described on menu.
