Friedman's Kitchen + Bar
Friedmans is a family run business, which operates locations throughout New York City. Friedmans was named after the famous economist Milton Friedman who popularized the phrase, “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch”. This phrase has gone on to be used in science, economics, finance, statistics, technology, sports, & now food. However, to put it simply, “to get one thing we like, we usually have to give up another thing we like.”
The original store opened in 2009. One of the pioneers Vanessa had been diagnosed with celiac disease and had to eat gluten-free. So when the first location opened she was vocal about making it a gluten-free safe haven for her and her celiac peers. After long hours in the kitchen and playing with all different sorts of flours we believe we have created some of the best pancakes, waffles, and fried chicken. More importantly, they are all intrinsically gluten-free.
This restaurant was excellent! I had reservations at 10:30, we arrived at 10:18 and were seated immediately. We reviewed the menu prior to arrival and ordered immediately. Our food was brought to us at 10:36. The service was amazing. I would definitely recommend and go back again!
Fabulous with allergies and pre-theater.
Great for a casual meal before or after theater.
We went because we are gluten free. The gluten free fried chicken and waffle was incredible. We also had a burger and fries which were equally as good. Can't wait to go back!
Perfect for a gluten-free date night that even gluten lovers will enjoy!
Friedman's is pretty good from a food perspective. Swung by here for brunch with my fiance and was pleased by the variety on the menu.
Service was so poor as to nearly ruin the entire experience. A number of parties without reservations were seated before us, despite walking in after. Weirdly, the host kept asking me if my name was Ricky. (It isn't.) Once we were seated, it took 10 minutes for a waitress to come by our table, and at one point she poured water into my mug of coffee. Took forever to get the check.
Not sure we would return here.
Excellent service, food was delicious and came fast. Decent pricing, and comfortable seating.
Loads of gluten free options, food was served quickly and tasted good, service very friendly.
We were going for dinner before a show and wanted something close and had something for everyone in our small group. The food was wonderful, and the service was fabulous.
Amazing and brilliant service by all the staff!
Wanted a place close to our theatre for pre show dinner and was very pleased with Friedman’s! Nice atmosphere , good food and service. Reasonably priced!!
I have Celiac Disease and they were able to safely accommodate me! They offer most items GF and are very careful in sharing which items can or be prepared GF. Our food came to us hot - it had not been sitting under a heat lamp! Everything was delicious. Our service was great - helpful, honest, and attentive.
Excellent brunch menu. Food great. Friendly service.
Problems in kitchen. I ordered a salad with well-done salmon. Salad arrived with chicken. Server took it back and brought back with almost raw salmon. Coffee was Luke warm.
Waiter got order wrong missed a whole entree. It was very warm in the restaurant. We told Walter nothing was done.
The food was delicious. The gluten free pot stickers were delicious. All the food was labeled gluten free when it came to our table. Great customer service!!
A perfect Christmas Day Brunch! Our original reservations were at a different Friedman’s location and we learned, upon arrival, that they had to close because of a kitchen issue. The hostess was kind enough to place a makegood reservation at a different Friedman’s and offer a discount on the meal. Food was delicious, wait staff super attentive. Will definitely be returning.
Excellent service and great food. Did not have to wait long. My kid loved their tuna melt and the chilaquiles were very good had them the first time and my wife had them the next time . I cancelled my reservation at an other restaurant because it was good and my kids loved it.
My son and I are gluten-free.... unbelievable gluten-free food....amazing!
My chicken sandwich was dry and the chicken was rubbery. No sauce.
Great little gem, food and service were delicious. We’ll be back!
One of the best Reuben sandwiches in New York paired with excellent service and a low enough noise level to actually converse with everyone at the table.
I had a reservation. But they wanted to seat me in a corner at the bar. I got a Hightop table by the bar. Coffee was bad. Pastrami hash was was ok, but the sunny side egg was over cooked. Brown on the bottom and yolk was cooked completely through. The waitress I think was embarrassed, but the hostess was indifferent, not just to me but also others that came through the door. How do I know?...because that’s where I was sitting. Won’t go there again.
My partner is gluten free and has a lactose intolerance. This place was so good with his allergies that we are here for dinner and then again for breakfast!
Last minute Open Table reservation and we were seated within minutes of arriving. Food was excellent. They have a burger and beer deal for $20. Can't beat that.. And the burger was delicious. Would definitely return the next time I'm in the Times Square area.
Not what it once was. The attraction is gluten-free. However, as they have expanded, everything has become formulaic. Mediocrity seems to unfortunately be the standard.
Nice but inexperienced server. Food was good—could have been better for the price.
Service was perfunctory, food was ok (but not fully warmed). For the price it should have been better. Was seated at last table in the back room, next to wait station—ambiance of a break-room at a corporate workplace. I will say, we were out in time for theatre tickets! This place and others like it benefit from the lack of competition in the theatre district that can serve a nice meal at a good price, in the pre-theatre hour.
way too noisy between the intentionally loud acoustics and then the loud muzak. NO “people” don’t like that !
We loved it. Our servers were lovely! We came in from the rain and the staff took such good care of us.
The food was tasty. I was surprised to have my Eggs Benedict served on top of the Potato Pancake. They were loaded with a lot more onion than I want for breakfast. The mimosa could have used more orange juice. Service was good
What a pleasant experience. The management was so professional and skilled and friendly. we had difficulty feeling comfortable with the tables assigned. They went out of their way to please us without frustration, animosity, or hassle. Not only were they considerate the manager bought us a glass of wine for any inconvenience. Note, that kind of professionalism and customer care, unfortunately, not found commonly at most restaurants particularly in the theater district at the pre-show hour.
The service persons were so helpful, kind, and courteous. the menu is simple and clean that is great pre theater. the menu can be said to be "pub-like", plenty of choices for all. The food was well prepared.
Please note they serve only wine and beer at this location. They have other locations within a few block ... be careful as to which one you go to. The one on 47th street doesnt take reservations, they do have a full bar. it is a larger venue not as warm and cozy as this 49th st location. i will definitely be going back to this location!
Good Gluten free selection
Only tip? Breakfast could have been warmer. Poached Eggs on all 3 dishes cool to cold, as were potatoes on country breakfast. We were headed to a B’way show so no time to return food. Might want to check the temp b4 meals leave Kitchen.
That said, it will not deter us from returning. Everything was delicious and the hostess & servers were really terrific.
Was expecting more of the Friedman’s menu but it’s quite different than the traditional Friedman’s around the corner. I wish that was made more clear on their website
Great place to catch up with a friend from out of town. Friendly service and they didn't rush us out. Good size portions. Good coffee. Thumbs up, we will come again.
Small. Its terribly small but service was ideal!!
The food was cold. We sent 2 plates back and the food was still cold except for the eggs (my portion came back half the size compared to the 1st plate they brought me originally). My friend ordered a grain bowl with chicken, they forgot the chicken. When she asked for it they apologized and brought it just as we were all finishing our food.
The food was also expensive for being as plain and prepared without any thought as it was. There was no effort put into it whatsoever. My other friend’s tuna melt was served with potato chips. Come on, out a little heart into it!
Very disappointing, not coming back.
Went there before theatre for lunch. Good food, good value. Diner type ambiance. Excellent service. Waitress very attentive and didn't rush us .
