My husband and I celebrated our anniversary here and had a great time! Everything from the cocktails to the dessert was delicious! We started with oysters, then had the steak and sablefish, both cooked perfectly, and ended our meal with the unique and comforting madrona roll. Service was attentive and the chef even came out to talk with all the diners. This was our first time at Friday Harbor and we're so glad we chose to dine here :)
This was the first time we have visited since the remodel last summer. The food was excellent and creative. Certainly one of the best places to eat on San Juan Island.
The food was amazing! Great service. Super modern atmosphere.
Beautiful view of the marina whether for a date night or just to relax with a drink. Food was delicious and the service was fantastic. Small and cozy inside with some seasonal outdoor seating.
The menu we received had little relation to their website and was extremely limited. For an 'upscale' price in a harbor town, the only fish option was a so-so salmon! We are locals and can think of several places we'd rather go. We won't be back.
Terrible vegetarian option. Beware. I had a very upset stomach after eating here. Go to Mikes!!
The food was fabulous! I specifically came for the lamb which was not on the menu. The owner had lamb cooked for me and it was very flavorful. Loved the ambiance.
We had a reservation at the Friday Harbor House and arrived early to have a drink and listen to the Friday night concert taking place just below the outdoor informal dining area. We were warmly welcomed and when a table cleared outside, we were seated. It was a lovely evening and the staff was great. We had a drink, listened to the music from the harbor side park, and took in the beautiful view. The manager said he would get us in as soon as a table cleared. 45 minutes past, and the time of our reservation was approaching. The waiter and manager both said that, although things were slow, it shouldn't be long. The time of our reservation came and went. Now the sun had set and it was getting cold outside. Another 30 minutes passed and still no table. We asked repeatedly why we had no table, but all they could say was that they did not know when a table would open up. It was now an hour past our reservation time and there were no tables close to finishing. The manager offered us a drink on the house but we were freezing and starving. So we left. What a disappointment! It's just not acceptable to keep promising a table "very soon" and then still not have one an hour after the time of our reservation. I have no idea how the food was. I suspect it was very good. But we will never know.
Very good food, excellent service. Started at an outside table, but they allowed us to move inside once the sun went down and it cooled off.
Pretty dining room with a view and outdoor seating. The duck fat fries were great and the salads were wonderful. Both orders of fried chicken had a piece of undercooked thigh. The ribeye had a good flavor and was nicely cooked. The vegetables served with the main courses were very fresh and tasty. The desserts were unusual and fun.
Bad service, tiny portions, incredibly slow bringing out entrees. Preset bad overall. After an hour we looked around and no one had any food. It seemed like the waiter forgot about all of us. I ordered the lamb and it was the smallest portion I had ever seen. It should have been an appetizer. Olive and Marcona almonds dish were actually blue diamond. Go somewhere else.
Best service we had in the Islands and the food was great too. Make a reservation and get there a little early to snag a table outside overlooking the harbor. We ate dinner next to Bill and Melinda Gates.
Our 2nd time and it was very good.
The Papadelle starter was excellent and the Hamburger is really good.
Food is outstanding, we came here 2 days in a row during a 2 day trip! View exceptional, caught some great live music from nearby too. Katherine was an extremely attentive server and the bartender is super creative with his cocktails. A five star experience!!
Great dinner evening out. Delicious food, great service, fantastic harbor views.
The view of the Harbour and the decor of the restaurant hit you immediately.
The service was friendly and professional and the food is creative and approachable. The Lamb was excellent.
The food and atmosphere was great. The bartender (Mike) was great and made new drinks for us to try and his Negroni was amazing. We ate outside and it is worth the wait to get a table outside. The food was great and the cheese platter was perfect. We will be back.
We had a great time. Service was great, food was fabulous. Everything was awesome. We ate outside so we could enjoy the fantastic view of the harbor. Our server was great and knowledgeable. I ordered the octopus for the table. I had never had it before. Different but very good. I would order it again. The wine was great and so was my salmon. My friends ordered the fried chicken, it was good size and looked delicious. I would difinately return if I go back to the islands.
The food was very creative, and delicious. The bourbon cocktail was a bit odd, but I also expected that. I wish there were heaters outside, so we could have sat there. There were no blankets available when we arrived, so we sat inside.
Outstanding view of the marina, ferries and harbor. The wait staff was great, our server was very personable and friendly. Good value with good variety of menu choices.
We loved the experience and will be going back.
Food was fantastic, gorgeous spot.
Predominantly seafood dishes, expertly and creatively prepared.
We were staying at the Friday Harbor House and found the restaurant in the hotel convenient. However, we weren't expecting anything special. We were surprised to see every table filled on Saturday night, many of the diners being local. The service was cheerful and fast, the food was very good, and the restaurant had the feeling of an intimate bistro!
This restaurant has a great view of Friday Harbor. Menu is limited but food is very good. One of the best choices in town. Service got a little slow as the place filled up though. OUr server was seater, greeter, bar tender and order taker--too many jobs for one person.
Good food; great service; lacking atmosphere and ambience.
We had dinner here on an August Saturday at 8pm. The restaurant was very quiet and lacked atmosphere. However, the food was good and the wait staff fantastic. Our six month old son was very well catered for and the staff were so accommodating. It is a shame the decor was basic and had a boring conference hotel feel about it. The food was very nice though.
Having explored Friday Harbor the next day we found other bars/restaurants that had much more atmosphere on a Sunday evening, than the Bluff did on a Saturday evening.
I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for dinner. It maybe good for cocktails/Happy Hour while the sun is still up; as there is a nice deck overlooking the marina.
The food was really not very good and the server seemed very inexperienced. The view is great but that is about it.
When we walked into the restaurant, we were greeted quite warmly and offered three different tables: two inside and one outside. The view of the harbor is spectacular. We really enjoyed the wine list which had a good variety of California, Washington and other wines, although it was not very large. The salads we had to start with were excellent. The menu is not large but even with two picky children, we found plenty to enjoy. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the chicken was delicious. The server was extremely attentive. The deserts were excellent ad we shared a chocolate desert and had a wonderful lemon sorbet. They even had an excellent local port. The dinner was cheap compared to New York restaurants of similar quality.
There was a great view but the food is just so so.
Nice view, and we went on a Sunday night and were the only ones dining inside. The wait staff were friendly, kind, funny, informative and attentive. The food was good but not mind blowing. They split our dishes per our request and that was nice. The flat bread appetizer was not memorable but the warm spinach and brussell sprout salad was. The steak was nicely cooked and again served on two plates as a split. The waitress suggested a drink that was not on the menu and that was lovely, fresh berry mojito style drink. Yum.
We love the view from the dining room, and there is seating outside over looking the port and harbor where you can watch the boats, ferries and seaplanes come and go. The menu includes many Gluten-Free and Vegan dishes that are prepared so that anyone would enjoy the selections. Unique and locally sourced ingredients make dining here an adventure.
No hostess, waited to be seated, with our table empty. Mix up in kitchen, whatever that was, waited 75 minutes for food. Chef was out back in outside garden sitting at table talking to acquaintances. Food was just okay, minimal portions, overpriced. The only nice thing was the view, but would have been better off sitting next door on public bench eating a bag lunch.
Coming from Victoria, this restaurant is not exactly next door. The last time we were here was in March. It was very busy, and they only had one waitress on, serving all of the tables. This time around, it was a pleasant evening, on a Friday, in early June. They had more than one server, on this occasion.
We had the same waitress that we had in March. She was very pleasant and efficient. She steered us to some fine wine from Walla, Walla Washington.
Since our last visit here, the Executive Chef has changed.
The menu continues to be quite imaginative, with local meat, fish and produce selections. Our veal shoulder was not what we expected to get. It was somewhat dry and overcooked. We cannot comment on the rest of the menu.
VERY good food, VERY good service, VERY good view, VERY good time by all
They fully accommodated a vegan-gluten free diet with a top notch meal.
Had a late night dinner after a day of Island touring. The drinks were wonderful and very unique. The potato/Leek soup was like velvet and oh so good. My chicken was moist and the bread pudding with buternut squash was perfect.
Chef Kyle Nicholson provides some imaginative fare. The wine list is carefully selected with a very reasonable markup, over retail winery prices. Refreshing approach, to say the least. In the "winter" months the restaurant cuts back on wait staff. This may be economically practical, but a dire mistake to fine dining.
This restaurant is much improved from my last visit a couple of years ago. Mad Hatcher chicken dish was excellent, as was the spinach and Bussels sprout salad. They are open on Winter Sundays, which is a real plus.
I was at the Bluffs last Saturday the 19th of January for the Totem Cellars Winemakers Dinner - and let me tell you it was a dinner I'll never forget! The food was, as usual, wonderful! And the pairings with the various wines was amazing. San Juan Winery was also on hand with a lovely white wine.
Chef Kyle of The Bluffs never ceases to amaze me with his ingenuity in the kitchen with a palette of locally sourced wines, produce, meats and seafood, along with local foraging, to put together a menu that always delights me!
This is a hidden gem on San Juan Island. Locally sourced foods and wines make for a real dining treat. Would (and often do) recommend this to anyone looking for a truly amazing dining experience!
Very quiet on a Sunday evening, but not entirely unexpected considering the small town is very sleepy in the depths of winter. Food was very good. Pork belly came with the most delicious risotto. Waitress was a little crazy, but in a good and entertaining way. Nice view overlooking the harbor and ferry.
