Freshwater (Fine) Dining
The restaurant was very crowded the night we dined. Very cramped space. Kitchen appeared slammed and food came out slow and not particularly hot. We all had the tasting menu with wine pairings. Most items were quite good but again could have been a touch warmer.
It was a very cold and icy night too parking lot was a mess as was sidewalk in front.
Will try again but not on a Saturday night.
Not that impressed. Husband's duck entree was raw & daughter's chicken entree was lukewarm. Service was slow. Won't go back.
We were looking for somewhere new for our date night. Freshwater turned out to be a great night. From the creative cocktail they made for my wife to the unique menu items. The hushpuppies are a must and the sturgeon entree was perfectly cooked and just the right size. Lots of great choices and a hidden gem in midtown KC
Freshwater (Fine) Dining IS exactly that! Deliciously, unique blend of ingredients and mastery of cooking; comfortable atmosphere providing a good place for conversation; though pricing seamed a tiny bit high ... it still was a great meal, with new friends, in a great environment. Parking is in the back of the restaurant. Dress code is business casual.
We loved every bite! The service was very good. Nice wine selection!
AMAZING food! Amazing wine pairing!
Unique cocktails, knowledgeable staff and amazing food. Will definitely be back to try another tasting menu!
This was our 2nd visit. We brought friends who'd never been. One of them got the pork entree which was excellent. His wife opted for the walleye. Also yummy, though small portion for entree price.
We chose several small plates to make our meal. The bread service is stellar. Made in house. Not so keen on the cod spread; starchy. Was served with rosemary lavosh. The board on which it came was wet, hence the crackers were soggy. I mentioned it and they quickly replaced them, however still not brittle as I'd expect. Brunschweiger beignets are to die for. Trout 2 ways was good with a smattering of roe on the side. Was not embracing the pasta with prawn. Just o.k. couldn't taste the prawn. So all in all, o.k.
Last time we got 2 entrees which were appetizer size for double the price. This time our friend's pork was a substantial portion and fabulous flavor. Guess it's hard to know.
This is a great little gem that you should try out. We went for new year eve and had a great pre fix menu. Sampled a lot in the 6 courses provided. We sat in the kitchen dining area whis is open to the guests. It was fun to see the chefs working their magic.
My experience may have been tainted because of New year's Eve preparations, but my expectations where high for a fine dining experience. Additionally, there was confusion in the expectations of the night, while no one's fault, my expectation was not for the service to be defensive about it, but to find a good solution. Lastly, our other friends had different and a more pleasurable experience at the same time we were dining.
One of my new favorite places. Everything on the menu is fantastic. The servers are very friendly and the bartenders are extremely knowledgeable.
They did not deal with a gluten-free diet in a reassuring way. (First two courses were served with gluten.) Were told there were no Chardonnays in their wine pairings - first two were made from chard. For what we paid, performance was less than we expected.
The service was slow and the small plates should have been called tiny plates!! One of the group got soup and it was about three tablespoons worth. The cocktails were the best part of the meal!!
Food was excellent when we finally got it. The server was sick so the bartender was serving and making drinks. The 10 course meal was poorly paced and we only got 9 courses.
We had the tasting menu, 10 courses, and at least 9 of them were excellent. The sushi item was just OK. We would definitely go back, especially now that we are more familiar with the menu, having tasted several of the offerings.
Everything was excellent. Our table was not ready and they graciously gave us a glass of bubbly! Can’t wait to return!
First they wanted to seat us at the bar, even though we had a reservation. Rather indifferent waitstaff. Better luck next time, I suppose..if there is one.
As usual, this place does not disappoint. I usually go for the small plates, but I tried an entree for the first time. The duck was perfectly cooked and each of the “Duck Three Ways” was delicious. Chef Calvin and the staff were welcoming as always. If you are looking for a casual vibe with foodie food, this is a great pick.
This was our first trip to Freshwater and we both enjoyed the 10-course tasting menu. The seating in the kitchen area was interesting as we were just a few feet away from the stove, but it was actually fun to see how the "sausage is made". The food was delightful, especially the pork belly and soup. We included the standard wine pairing and it was enjoyable trying the various choices. All in all a great evening and a good price point. We'll be back!
Had the 10-course tasting menu which was a great way to try many different items. Took about 2 hours for the entire experience, but well worth it! Food was fantastic, nice wine pairings and excellent service. Only criticism - our table was right next to where the wait staff replenished silverware & glasses, so a little distracting.
Great. Love the tasting menu. Fabulous value. They change it often and very interesting food. The wine paring is a deal. This is our third visit here. So fun with a group!
Great food, good time and excellent staff perfect choice for my daughter’s birthday. Marilyn
My husband and I did the tasting menu. The server was nice and helpful. He made it clear that they could accommodate any food restrictions which is nice to know.
The tasting menu is 10 courses. The courses are large! We got to the 5th course and were already too full. The food was creative; however nothing stood out. There was something that was missed with almost every dish. For example: the pasta was about undercooked, not al dente. The “soup” course was a heavy bean soup that needed more fat and salt. The steak was 50% fat and not edible because of the chewiness.
Unfortunately the food was a major disappointment :(
One of the worst parts of the evening was the restroom! This was the grossest bathroom I’ve been in a restaurant ever! The toilet had hair all over it and you could tell the toilet bowl hadn’t been cleaned for a while because of the ring. There was a plant that had shredded all over the place. This sink was also dirty.
We were very excited to try this restaurant and I usually say we will give everything a second chance but I would be surprised if it’s around for a long time because of these details.
Fantastic food and great staff. The best value for well executed, interesting food in the KC metro. The tasting with paring was really fun, and the wine and cocktails were great.
The food was okay. Several of our dishes came out cold. The restaurant itself was cold. We’ve done several of the restaurants with small plate options or tasting menus and this was our least favorite experience. It might have been a rough night as others seem to enjoy it, but not a place I’d go back and try again.
Very creative, great service. Calvin is a great chef
This is my second time at Freshwater and they did not disappoint! We did the tasting menu with the wine pairing and everything was AMAZING! The cocktails before the tasting from Marlin were out of this world and can't wait to go back and hang out at the bar just with him. My only disappointment was I wish our waiter would have spent a bit more time let us know about the wine, why it was paired with the dishes, and even explaining what the dishes were. This won't stop me from going again but I did have this experience both times I have been there (same waiter).
Our first visit to Freshwater and we tried the Tasting Menu without the Wine Pairings.
7/10 of the courses were great and a couple were hard to evaluate as they werent much more than a bite of food and flavor. We like the variety and combinations of fresh foods and proteins. The Beef and Trout were excellent and the Soup was the perfect Fall highlight.
Wine selections by the Som were right on point!
Service was friendly but the explanation of the courses was very rushed and perfunctory and did not complement the presentation of the food. I would encourage the server to slow down and not just put the plate in front of the diner with hurried comments. The whole idea of a tasting
Menu is to learn and experience a wide variety of foods.
Overall a good experience and we would visit again.
Drinks were overpriced. The staff other than our server were very nice. Food was salty and mediocre.
My wife and I had date night at Freshwater, and had 10 course tastings. We are both vegan, so we made a request in our reservation notes and gave them a call more than 24 hrs in advance, and they hooked it up! All of our dishes were creative, complex, and just straight up DELICIOUS. The wine pairings were only $25 more, and they did a wonderful job of providing us with timely, tasty wines for each course. Overall, if you are looking for a great tasting menu experience, Freshwater has the best one in town. At $55 (plus $25 for wine), you really can't beat this experience anywhere!
This was out 1st time trying this restaurant and we were pleasantly surprised. Food is excellent. Probably better value for small plates vs entrees. Connor was attentive and knowledgeable. Marlin greeted us at the bar upon arrival. Most personable. Will definitely return. Would love to try their tasting menu.
Food and service was phenomenal.
We had a wonderful dinner at Fresh Water. Two of us enjoyed the tasing menu with wine pairing. It was superb. I will do that again! The other two diners orders main course meals and cocktails and enjoyed them very much. I look forward to returning soon.
Experience was good overall. Probably wouldn’t come back for anything other than a glass of wine at the bar. I felt the ambiance was pretty bad and 90% of the uncomfortable furniture came straight out of an ikea catalog which is not what you expect when you pay $150 for a dinner for two.
The service was excellent minus the man whom I assume is the owner and has a slight attitude.
Food was phenomenal but portions were lacking considering the price as well. We did the 10 course dinner which was $55 a person and every item on the menu we received was really great. I just wish the seat had been comfortable enough to enjoy the 1.5 hour long experience and table didn’t wobble every time I set my glass down. This place could have been absolutely amazing if the same amount of heart that goes in to the food went in to the restaurant itself as well.
Wonderful ten course tasting menu with perfect wine pairings. The tasting menu was right sized so you didn’t leave too full, but instead perfectly happy.
The tasting menu was one of a kind delicious! My husband and I are pescatarian and it was everything we could ever want or imagine and more! Highly recommend
So many wonderful flavors to savor as we journeyed through the amazing 10 course tasting menu. Some favorites: bass crudo, kuri squash soup, a dish that included chanterelle mushroom! and items on the not basic charcuterie board. We chose the wine pairing and it was incredibly matched to the courses we enjoyed. We also heard about each of the wines as they were served. Really down to earth and not snooty and just flat out delicious!
If you haven’t been here, go now! You won’t regret it.
Had the 10 course meal. Fabulous event. Wonderful food. Amazing service. Definitely a place I’ll recommend & consider returning
This was my second visit. Their performance continues to be consistently good, making it a very enjoyable evening.
We truly enjoyed the tasting menu and would recommend the reserve wine paring to accompany it. We were very impressed by both the food and the wine selections. Great pairings. Excellent service. We were seated in the same room as the kitchen and I would note that this room felt a little warm on a summer evening. It was fun to watch the chefs prepare the meal.
