French Roast Uptown
Neighborhood gem. Consistently good food, good service and good ambiance. Very comfortable.
Great French restraunt in a perfect location. The service was incredible the server was nice and the staff was friendly. I had the escargot appetizer, the salmon for my entree and a nice sized glass of cabernet. I def would recommend to a friend.
Thank you for taking the time to review French Roast
Dinner at French Roast was fantastic. The service was impeccable, and the food was outstanding. We will definitely enjoy this again in the future.
Consistently great! Best Shakshuka and onion soup. Omelets just like in Paris.
Sat us next to a creepy lady by herself, talking to herself (and smelled). While you can’t always control who walks in the door, you can control how swiftly you move them through and out the door. She only left them $1 tip so surprised they didn’t see that she was someone they needed to “usher along”. My husbands pork chop was rare (he asked for medium well) and had to be sent back. My salads nicoise was only ok. Decor was nice. If I lived in the neighborhood I might consider this a weekday night spot. Good outdoor seating.
I apologize for the inconvenience, as you stated we can't control who walks through the door and we never want to refuse any guest service. It is a fine line that is walked between New York eccentric and someone who is indeed a danger. I will certainly advice the staff to be more vigilant along those line. As for the food issues I have brought them to the attention of our chef to see what can be done to rectify your concerns. Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience.
Pleasantly surprised by revamped menu which has many more healthy and tasty options.
We eat here at least once a week. Food is always very good & we enjoy coming here.
Tonight was a bit different. We both ordered the roast chicken whiz is one of our favorites for years. The chef changed the gravy to an herb- wine base & frankly it didn’t go w/ the chicken. In fact we are toatally disappointed & didn’t finish the meal. They covered the chicken w/ it & it was too overwhelming & spoiled the meal. Go back to the former style gravy please.
Thank you for your input and taking the time to let us know of this issue. Obviously there are some kinks that need to be addressed on our new seasonal menu. I will certainly pass your thoughts on to the Chef.
Always a pleasure dining here. It's one of our neighborhood gems. The onion soup is devine, as is everything else on the menu. Lovely wines and dining outside during the warmer months feels like one is closer to Paris.
French Roast is an old reliable: good food, great environment to sit and have a conversation, and the price stays affordable. Bravo French Roast - as always!
Petty good for food
Service ea excellent, perhaps because it was Easter Sunday and the restaurant was petty empty. Portions were small. My risotto was swimming in liquid and flavorless. The duck was tender but very undersized portion. French Roast as long been a go to place, but the last few times have been gastronomically underwhelming. I may stick with either Le Monde and Nice Matin going forward. Rather disappointing.
French Roast is just what a neighborhood restaurant should be--friendly, comfortable, open 24 hours. The menu is varied and suits any appetite pretty much any time of day. The wait staff is personable and helpful. The noise level is high, but to a certain extent this is a product of French Roast's popularity. There is outdoor seating. A reservation is a good idea.
Our server was very nice & attentive.
It’s really like a diner and they have low standards but it’s not the worst and the outdoor seating is nice.
Amazing friendly professional service by a very attentive staff in this neighborhood brasserie!
When I want to swoon over a burger and fries French roast is my happy place !
The food and service at french Roast are consistently great. Thats why its one of our favorite places.
When we walked in I thought we were in a neighborhood diner and was a bit nervous about what to expect. Don’t the the look fool you! Absolutely wonderful staff who were genuinely friendly. A menu that really was French! And very tasty food. And very reasonably priced.
Thank you for taking time to let us know of your experience with us.
Great vibe, steak and peppercorn sauce was delicious.
always happy at French Roast
Everything was perfect, from the friendly and accommodating staff to the comfy seats. I can't wait to go back.
Bring back chipotle mayo please!! 😍
My first visit for dinner to this popular UWS bistro. My guests and I enjoyed ourselves and would definitely revisit.
Great amazing service, as usual, by Darwin! Fine food and ok presentation! Noise level okey! It has become overpriced: $5.00 for a regular cup of coffee?! Give me a break!!!
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. In a meet up with friends last night it was a wonderful experience as usual. We started with a scallops salad , escargot and hummus. The scallops were succulent and cooked to perfection. For entrees , we shared hanger steak cooked to a perfect medium rare, a lamb shepherds pie with creamy mashed potato and perfectly seasoned lamb and a salmon dish that was moist and delicious. The service was attentive and the server was knowledgeable and helpful.
Great variety of classic French bistro food and drinks
Food was good , service was decent , overall we had a good experience
A cozy energetic, during dinner time, brasserie. Short menu with interesting options. Great service. Olivia, our server, was gracious & attentive!
I love this place, though sometimes at dinnertime the wait staff comes to the table too many times....it can be a bit frustrating if you want to indulge in conversation with the person you're dining with. (Oh and word to the wise...do not order the Brussels sprouts. But, DO order the hamburger--delicious!)
Best Tart Tatin in town! Reliable food. Fun atmosphere. Very relaxed.
Lovely french bistro on the upper west side. Cozy retro atmosphere and great food. Perfect for a date night or dinner out with friends. The outdoor seating is nice in the warmer months with a view of Broadway.
Great UWS institution. Service is always friendly and the food satisfying.
Cool spot. Great food. Chilled and loved eating at the bar. Gem
An excellent place for low-key french food. Good wine list, decently varied menu, usualy crowded, but still one of my favorites.
Valentines Day at 5:30--nice and QUIET. WE COULD ACTUALLY CONVERSE!
Val Day Specials were excellent. The duck dish cooked perfectly Med rare and the wine infused deviled eggs, very prettily presented with herbs decoration, and fig jam mixed in with oyster was different and delicious. Bar cocktails, as ALWAYS, well done!
Caveat: to the excellent chefs: Specials were great, BUT, please don't blow off the usual fare; very important that boeuf bourgignon is not overlooked and dry (though the wine sauce was very good.) we would like to return and will recommend to others.
Oh; and would it be possible to have at least one fine red Bordeaux or burgundy or chateauneuf and one fine white burgundy for special occasions? The best we could do wasn't even French! (Malbec--not terrible, but we would have splurged on a good French or even Italian red.)
Anyway, kudos overall and see you again, soon.
Nice neighborhood place. Good service, good choice of meals, and libations!
There are very few restaurant options in the vicinity of 86th St. French Roast is passable; it’s fine for a glass of wine and a meal. I ordered zucchini noodles which were watery and tasteless but the mashed potatoes were outstanding.
I’ll be going back
The new chef has turned French Roast Uptown into much more than a bistro cafe. He actually makes a beef cheeks dish which is superb -only on the menu when he chooses. His lamb dishes in any form are incredible. And the bar tender does great drinks truly to order. This is a gem - not glam - just a true NY gem.
