French Roast Uptown
Lovely french bistro on the upper west side. Cozy retro atmosphere and great food. Perfect for a date night or dinner out with friends. The outdoor seating is nice in the warmer months with a view of Broadway.
Great UWS institution. Service is always friendly and the food satisfying.
Cool spot. Great food. Chilled and loved eating at the bar. Gem
An excellent place for low-key french food. Good wine list, decently varied menu, usualy crowded, but still one of my favorites.
Valentines Day at 5:30--nice and QUIET. WE COULD ACTUALLY CONVERSE!
Val Day Specials were excellent. The duck dish cooked perfectly Med rare and the wine infused deviled eggs, very prettily presented with herbs decoration, and fig jam mixed in with oyster was different and delicious. Bar cocktails, as ALWAYS, well done!
Caveat: to the excellent chefs: Specials were great, BUT, please don't blow off the usual fare; very important that boeuf bourgignon is not overlooked and dry (though the wine sauce was very good.) we would like to return and will recommend to others.
Oh; and would it be possible to have at least one fine red Bordeaux or burgundy or chateauneuf and one fine white burgundy for special occasions? The best we could do wasn't even French! (Malbec--not terrible, but we would have splurged on a good French or even Italian red.)
Anyway, kudos overall and see you again, soon.
There are very few restaurant options in the vicinity of 86th St. French Roast is passable; it’s fine for a glass of wine and a meal. I ordered zucchini noodles which were watery and tasteless but the mashed potatoes were outstanding.
I’ll be going back
The new chef has turned French Roast Uptown into much more than a bistro cafe. He actually makes a beef cheeks dish which is superb -only on the menu when he chooses. His lamb dishes in any form are incredible. And the bar tender does great drinks truly to order. This is a gem - not glam - just a true NY gem.
I love this restaurant for any meal. It's great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The food is great, especially the fish for dinner. I always take out of town guests here because I can count on consistently great service and not being rushed. You can have a good conversation and hear each other. The wine choices are great. They use these beautiful big Bordeaux glasses. It's definitely a neighborhood gem.
Food and service were great!
A marvelous place to go for delicious food and French cafe’ ambiance. Whether with a lover or a pal a great place to reunite in a stylish yet casual venue. Grand!
We had a business meeting and didn’t order much but the staff were gracious and didn’t rush us.
Good neighborhood spot for quick bite with solid bistro fare. My favorite in the area.
Disappointing service. Waiter did not know basic questions on menu and food was over cooked and fatty. The bread and dessert were the only good parts of the meal.
Restaurant Manager was not able to process my Open table reward even though both Opentable and the customer service company that manages the rewards cards said it should have worked. I ended up paying cash for the full cost of the meal.
Great food...great service..highly recommended...A++++++++++++
We’ve never had a bad meal here!
We've been regulars for years when we lived around the corner, and after we moved a bit further away, at least once a month for Thursday night menu of Duck Confit at around $16.
The place is now under new management, have retained most menu items and apparently the chef too, but have done away with the nightly specials menu. We ordered the Duck Confit as per usual- albeit this was a Wednesday night. The price was now $22 and a shrivelled up bone-dry piece of duck leg was served....likely the last time we will eat there.
It was such a disappointing turn of events because we always regarded The French Roast UWS as one of the best kept secrets. We are very sad.
French Roast is always reliable for good food. The vinaigrette is first-rate.
food is absolutely delicious and a great neighborhood spot.
Tables are super close so can feel a bit cramped.
the food was delicious at the time, but afterwards we paid for it. too rich! the portions were a bit uneven in size.
My meal was so over cooked Even after asking for it not to be overcooked. Both of the meals were also either cold or parts of it was lukewarm…
The service could not have been better or nicer! A good martini and steak frites cooked to order. What's not to enjoy! Service very good. It's been around for a long time (by restaurant standards) and these are some of the good reasons why.
Always enjoyable, gracious service.
My out of town friend and another celebrated Thanksgiving dinner here. The turkey special was so delicious, Collard greens and mashed potatoes so tasty..Topped it off with red wine and pumpkin pie
and lemon sorbet..Lively and festive..Highly recommend. Price was right.
We came for breakfast. The service was outstanding and attentive. We loved the food. Nice eggs Benedict and delicious omelette. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. We will return.
The food, wine choices, service & management at French Roast, where we have eaten for many years, continue to be excellent overall. However, tonight, my partner, who has enjoyed the Lamb Chops occasionally, decided to try the Sunday Night Special “Lamb Stew”. What a mistake! It was quite “gamey” & tasted strongly of “lamb” (not in a good way). Even the excess of curry didn’t help to save the dish. The Lamb Stew, compared with the Lamb Chops, is a night / day difference. This stew with its inferior meat shouldn’t be on the French Roast Menu. I would strongly recommend replacing the Lamb Stew with the Lamb Chops, which have always been excellent. Other than this anomaly, I would continue to rate French Roast as Very Good in all areas.
This ranks among the worst nights out for dinner I've ever had. We've had trouble at French Roast before; untrained waiters who change every other day, no organization, food cooked poorly, long waits for a bill, but every once in a while, it surprises and it's pleasant, and it's right across the street. This time, a Sunday evening, was horrible.
We waited 45 minutes for a main course. That would have been okay, (it was crowded), but then we realized the people who had come in 20 minutes after us had already had their appetizers, and were getting their main course. We called over the waiter who was clueless, maybe his first night, and said it would be " a while." We called for the manager who said it was very busy. We pointed out the group who'd been fed, and he had no answer. When the food finally came, my steak was so tough I had to saw at it to cut it. My girlfriend's fish was cold and had to go back. That's apparently what made them charge us for 3 dinners instead of two. Again, the manager came, who offered us free dessert. When I asked what's for dessert, he said we only got one choice. We told him to keep his dessert, and as we left, he comped the whole meal saying he would " see us again soon." And we are steady customers. He won't see us again soon, maybe never.
A wonderful neighborhood place, comfortable venue, atmosphere, food. Reminiscent of the 70’s!
Expensive, horrible service. But the food makes it all worth while.
Bistro style. Loud. Big TV at bar
Nice attentive server
The strak dish was just ok. Poivre sauce was gummy and strange looking.
Frites were dry and lacked flavor.
Onion soup at a French bistro was just bad.
The cheese was a square slapped on top and barely melted over bland brown mush.
I have had a nice brunch here. Dinner very average. Prices pretty good for NYC
One of my favorites in the UWS & NYC. Pleasant when not crowded. Yulia, our server, like all other servers, was very attentive, courteous and professional.
Good place to have a casual French style lunch. Coffee is really good. So is the avocado toast and the grilled octopus.
Felt like a European oasis on the UWS. Food and coffee was great. Nice way to start the day.
There were quite a few dishes unavailable. Wish there could be more food options.
Excellent service and food selection. Flavor, Flavor, Flavor!
The food was very good, particularly the octopus appetizer. The service was table-flipping intrusive, which was especially annoying because the place was empty and there was no need to flip tables, but the wait staff were otherwise personable and nice.
They were ok. Food was as expected. Nothing superior. Noise level terrible. No gluten-free options (they didn’t even know what that was). Good for an ordinary meal. No frills
Great service by Darwin! Food was incredible & tasty!
Prices have gone up too much for simple fare.
The steak tartare special was not very good and over drenched in Worcester sauce. Would not order it again.
