This was my first time at French roast, which has been recommended to me for many years… I rarely venture away from the Lincoln Center area… And I’m so happy that I did … it was a truly lovely experience… The only downer for me was I ordered their excellent Zucchini pasta as an appetizer and they charged an extra dollar because I asked for Parmesan cheese! Other than that, I was a very happy camper, and I intend to go back soon and often.

Very solid food and service. Price is a bit lower than other French bistros in the area. Wine was good too. A not-mind-blowing but good duck confit. For price, in UWS, in NYC, 5 STARS.

Great Find !!!! Our hotel suggested it for breakfast ,said it has been there for years …. It’s easy to see why . Friendly attentive service, delicious coffee I must have had 5 cups, and the manager was nice enough to give us a bag to brew back home. Shakshuka was delicious and my wife loved her omelette , a real French omelette that you don’t always get in the US … this will be a regular stop every time we are in NYC

Was hoping this could be a neighborhood spot for us, but the steak and eggs were only okay, and the Shakshuka was overly salty with unpleasant-tasting Merguez sausage. The only thing I'd consider reordering is the French toast, but it's 3 half slices for $16 + tax and tip. The service was nice enough, but the aggressively mediocre food at 3-star pricing means this is a definite skip.

The food was good as always. Dependably one of the best burgers around; great fries, also with the always-good mussels. We've been coming here for years, and will continue to do so. But we were troubled last night, when the restaurant was busy but less than half filled. Although we had a reservation, we were offered a "free standing" table right in the middle of traffic from the kitchen. We asked for one of the empty tables by the window, and our request was honored. I don't mean to be picky, but why weren't we offered the better table to start with? Service was notably slower than usual. We ordered drinks (a glass of wine and a beer) when we ordered dinner; the drinks took a long time to come out (again, even though the place was not that busy). It was not a complicated drink order, no mixing, no measuring. No reason for the long wait Then, when we were paying our check after dinner, we heard the server telling the next table about the night's specials, which sounded like they included crab cakes. Nothing was said to us about specials. We figured that because it was Friday evening there were no specials. (I might have gone for the crab cakes if I'd known they were offered!) Do we now have to challenge the server "Are there specials tonight?"? French Roast remains one of our "go-to"s. Last night was disappointing, and I hope it will prove unusual.

Thank you for taking the time to review French Roast. I assure you where you were initially sat has nothing to do with you. We try to seat all servers evenly not only so they can all make equal money but so you the guest can get the type of service your expect and deserve. When one server is over sat then the attention to detail and the speed at which they can serve you suffers. We apologize that was the case last evening and we will look for better solutions to assure it doesn't happen again.

My dining experience at French Roast Upper West Side was nothing short of spectacular. My friends and I had the pleasure of enjoying an al-fresco dinner there this Labor Day weekend. We delighted in escargot, a refreshing mango salad, Boeuf Bourguignon, steak, and duck confit. The entire meal was truly remarkable, from our expertly mixed cocktails to the top-notch service provided by the bartender Juan and General Manager Sam. The overall atmosphere contributed to making it a memorable evening. This place is an unmissable gem in the Upper West Side!

Visit this UWS institution at least once a week for breakfast . Never disappoints delicious food, try the Shakshuka or French Toast . Friendly, attentive servers who are all clearly happy at their jobs. Great people watching inside and outside … see the locals, your neighbors and a celebrity or two. Sat at the bar, the bartender, Juan, made what may have been the best Belvedere Martini I have had in quite some time, blue cheese stuffed olives were a nice touch. Had a delicious meal of Onion Soup and Steak Au Poivre. Again Juan came through and offered a special “ off the list “ Bordeaux he had open that paired perfectly. All and all a great time … will be back

The menu is authentically French and on the whole well executed, if not exceptional. This is a reliable and convenient French restaurant that I've been frequenting for years. It's just that the service is inconsistent. Our first server never checked on the progress of the preparation (and the restaurant in the pm on a weekday was not even 1/4 full). When after a half-hour she was asked when the cocktail ordered would be ready, she responded flatly "I sent in the order". Eventually, another server, whom we also asked, took over our order and couldn't have been more attentive and pleasant. Value is also in the consistency and efficiency of the service.

In for what is usually our twice a month brunch. Noticed new faces in the staff, our server Jillian was great !!! On top of things and super sweet . Everything was delicious as always. Happy to see new faces sometimes the service was unpredictable happy to see they fixed that !!!

Went for Restaurant Week lunch. Service was slow and disorganized. The burger was horrible: overpowering cheese, mushy spinach, and an egg that they couldn't cook as requested. Steak frites were below average. Disappointing.

The quality of the food was not good. My husband got steak and eggs and the sizeof the steak was super small. The nose inside was horrible, impossible to carry a conversation

In the height of a Sunday brunch it can get a little high volume, a packed restaurant with glass walls and a tin ceiling nothing absorbs the sound. We will discuss the steak issue with the Chef, it is weighed and portioned out as a 6oz strip loin as advertised on the menu. We will certainly check to make sure those guidelines are being followed. The restaurant seems understaffed but the brunch we had was very good. We didn't mind the wait times because we were catching up with old friends but it isn't somewhere to go if you want to be in and out quickly.
