Service was slow and inattentive, but the food was delicious as per usual.
Food and ambiance were very good but service was below average. Food took 30 minutes and they forgot to bring two things. We asked a few times for bread to tide is over and it finally came after our meal.
Great coffee in a nice neighborhood!!!
The chair was very uncomfortable. My brunch date never goes there because of the chairs, but he sat in the banquette, so he was fine. I couldn't wait to leave sitting in that uncomfortable chair.
We have always liked the ambiance at French Roast.
A great place for a cappuccino.
We were disappointed in the food.
Last year we ate twice per week in French Roast.
In the last 6 months we have tried dinner there about 6 times.
It has changed hands and the simple but tasty food is just not there anymore.
We doubt that we shall return except for a coffee or tea.
The food was good, atmosphere was good...service was ok.
Normally, friends and I meet there for just drinks.
The bartender, Peter, is super nice and fun.
Must have changed hands. Haven't been here for a year. Food just ok, they ran out of wheat bread on a Saturday. Bathroom dirty, live plants in pots dying. This spot is missing some TLC.
An awesome and delicious brunch, in a perfect French setting...and I didn't even have to leave NYC. I'll Ben back soon.
The noise level was absolutely deafening. For some reason the folks running the place decided they had to have their muzak at maximum decibel level. People were screaming at each other to be heard. Will NEVER go back.
No one should expect anything special here. But no one should expect anything bad here. By Manhattan standards this place is a bargain. But that's not to say it's cheap.
Always a pleasure! Good food, fair prices; I tried the mussels for the first time, really fine. Burgers are great. Casual quality at its best. Merci!
Despite living nearby for many years, this was my first time eating at French Roast. And I'll be back, certainly for a weekday lunch. And will keep it in mind for other meals too.
Terrific attentive and friendly staff, delicious food, and cozy atmosphere. I've recommended it countless times. Love this restaurant!
I love it here. Very sweet, great waitstaff, for a nice romantic evening. Try the escargot!!!
A neighborhood gem that has survived the economic rollercoaster of years passed, and amongst the onslaught of Banana Republics and such chain stores.
Absolutely horrendous service at brunch
Used to be a favorite haunt, but they've changed their menu. Fewer choices, and less of a bistro than it used to be. No more mac-n-cheese, which my friend was disappointed by. The redesign is good - there's more light. Some of the new services choices are good. The iced was perfect, and the brussel sprouts were heaven - definitely the best thing we ate that night!
Waiter seemed very judgy about our order
Not worth the money. Food was not good, had to return one plate, second was disappointing as well. Service inattentive
I used to live across from their Upper West Side branch and was a regular. Nothing spectacular, but reliable, friendly, pleasant. So I thought we'd give this one a try because we were going to be in the neighborhood for a holiday party. Everything went ok until it was time to pay. Somehow the waiter dropped my credit card between table and cashier (why oh why don't we have those tableside gadgets like they do in Europe and Canada?) and took them the longest time to find it. Things happen, I know. But apologies were stingy, and there were no compensations like a free drink or dessert, which would have mitigated the annoyance considerably. This probably won't happen to you, but still, not a customer-friendly approach.
The food and service has improved since dining here a few years ago. It's getting harder to find quality meals at uninflated prices in the neighborhood. I would recommend coming here especially if you live in the area.
I like this place, the atmosphere and the current holiday decorations. My food was ok though, NY strip steak. I had in mind a steak frites with sauce bearnaise but this one was a bit tough, came with a side of veggies like brusselsprout(good) and you had to order fries on the side (which the waiter forgot to bring but put on our check...he took it off) the pepper sauce was good but kinda drenched the steak instead of having it on the side, there was a few odd fried potateoes on the plate and they were extremely salty. Guess I got the dud cause my friends gave their food thumbs up, a Bouillabaisse and the Moules Frites seems to have been excellent. The waiter a bit dizzy but very friendly.
Having lived in the West Village for over 40 years, my family (of 4) found no shortage of various dining experiences in the area. The French Roast Bistro was a pleasant surprise when it opened, a full menu ,attentive staff and reasonable priced. I received the announcement recently that the Bistro was under new management, Chef and menu. We decided to give it a try and support the new Chef and Menu. My children are now young adults but have fond memories of the Cafe au Lait, waffles and of course Eggs Benedict, after a sport session at PS 41, Carmine Recreation Center, GVLL and DUSC events with other families in the area, we would flock to the French Bistro. However, our recent experience fell short of our memories and expectations. The Eggs Benedict was served with cold ham and poached eggs, the Chef decided to serve the dish with a thick slice of a baguette ( which was impossible to cut through). The waffles were served luke warm as well. I have not visited the French Roast for their dinner menu as of yet, maybe, perhaps
Waiter, once he arrived in a half-empty restaurant on a Saturday night, didn't want to swap mashed potatoes for fries on an order. Called over the manager who said "chef doesn't like to do it this way" and new chef not flexible. You should write a letter.
Took forever to get glass of wine. No silverware put on table, no pepper for salads, steak served stone cold. Manager did take 50% off bill lots of great bistros and restaurants in this neighborhood. This isn't one of them. Avoid.
We celebrated Halloween there and had so much fun. Sam Belanger and staff took great care of us and helped generate a lively environment with the fantastic disco music and staff costumes. This is our second consecutive year going there. Thanks team!
One of our favorite restaurants in the village! Great food and great great service!! Always recommended!!!!
Solid food, great service
Great food. Nice atmosphere. Great for a date.
Good food, nice service. Alcoholic drinks were a bit more expensive than I thought.
The restaurant was empty yet was reluctant to seat us. I even had a reservation. We ordered a bottle of wine and the cork broke into the bottle. We requested a new bottle since we didn't want cork in our wine. Both the manager and the waiter argued when I voiced a preference for no cork in my wine. I had to go without wine.
Our entrees came out in twos so the members of the party ate alone and the group finished eating at different times.
This NYC staple isn't worth the real estate. In my 20 years living in NYC and as a frequent restaurant goer, this is by far the worst experience I ever had.
A dear old friend was in town who had only a few hours in her busy schedule to have an early dinner with us. I know she loves good food and has worked in restaurants and for notable chefs. Without hesitation, we take her to French Roast in the West Village. Consistently good food, the friendliest staff in town, and a great, reasonable selection of wines. I had the ribs, perfectly done, which came with a flavorful slaw and French Roast's legendary fries. A really ideal summer meal. Our waiter sensed that we wanted to chat a bit and didn't hover.
Our friend was enchanted by the experience, and so were we!
Nice atmosphere - great food and wines... We love this place..
This longtime favorite is open 24 hours, and has settled into a comfortable neighborhood groove. The French-American menu (Croque Monsieur, French Onion Soup, Mussels and Frites, etc.) is tasty and reliable.
French Roast is a great place to meet friends, eat, and chat.
The restaurant is unique as lingering over a drink or coffee is not frowned upon.
A varied menu - Salmon. roast chicken, or a burger.
We found French Roast a few years ago while staying at the Larchmont. Now we stop by every time we are in the city, wherever we are staying. Food is delicious, servings are perfect, and the price is great. This time around, we met friends who were also in town on business. They really enjoyed everything. Danni was super helpful and friendly, and very kind to one of our party who was having a frustrating evening on the professional front. We'll be seeing you again on our next visit!
Well! Lets start off with that we looked for a place that had Fat Tuesday Food and Atmosphere.
This was accomplished. We had a nice evening listening to some great Jazz Music and conversation, ordering food from the Special Mardi Gras Menu. The Chicken Gumbo was the best I ever had, No Joke! But the Fried Oysters well! Toooo Salty! and the kitchen did try to correct them for us. All in all it was a great night and the Service (Daniel) was on the ball bringing food to us as we ordered it.
Cant wait to come back for their regular French menu. If the kitchen cooks specials like this night I can only imagine what they do on a daily basis.
Nothing out of the ordinary, pretty good, nothing was particularly spectacular...just run of the mill café food.
I loved the late night ambience! And, the food and the service were exceptionally good. We dined at the bistro on New Year's Eve and we relished in the fine dining as well as the Sangria Rouge.
We were recently looking for a restaurant to have a group dinner (9-10 people) without having to be stuck with a prix fixe menu. French Roast came recommended and it was definitely the perfect choice. We were given a semi-private room allowing us to enjoy one another's company while still feeling the lively vibe from the restaurant. Their team was extremely attentive throughout and the cocktails were all delicious... We were told they are changed out seasonally, so we look forward to going back and seeing what they are in the coming months. Lastly, the food was great! We would have loved some more sharable apps, but those that we did have were delish. As for the mains, most of the table ordered the steak, which they all enjoyed... I had the lamb special - a must have if you go when it is on the menu. Would definitely recommend stopping in if you're in the neighborhood - the best part is their kitchen is open late!
Enjoyed the late night dining. Easy atmosphere and good people watching. Menu extensive and easy to choose. Would return
