French Meadow Cafe' - Grand Ave
French Meadow began as the first certified organic bakery in the USA in 1985, baking organic artisan yeast-free breads. Our popular Uptown Minneapolis cafe opened in the early 1990's, and we later opened our Grand Avenue cafe, near Macalester College, in response to a demand for fresh, healthy dining options in St. Paul.
Great food. The salmon, cream cheese scramble was delicious 😉
I had their Eggs Benedict because I love Hollandaise sauce. There wasn't much sauce on the Benedict, less than a tablespoon I'd estimate, so that was a bit disappointing. I still don't quite understand serving breakfast eggs with a side salad, but maybe this appeals to others. Just not my thing. My dining companions all enjoyed their selections. Service was excellent and because it was early morning the noise level was minimal.
Thank you for your comments. Please note that we will certainly allow a substitution toe the salad on your eggs benedict. Sincerely,
The music that was playing was TOO loud!
There was not enough broth served with the mussels.
My soup was luke-warm when served. However, my server took it back to the kitchen and had it warmed up.
We have been to French Meadow many times because of the great food. The service is always good, but this past Saturday it was truly exceptional. Thanks to the owner, the chef and Anastasia!
My son’s valentines date
Great food, great service, wonderful ambiance. Loved it.
My wife and I had never dived at French Meadow. We were delighted with the atmosphere, service, and food. A Frenchman, possibly the owner, stopped by our table for a friendly chat, too.
I'm so happy you enjoyed your time with us, and thank you for the lovely review! The Frenchman you reference would the exceptional General Manager of our St. Paul restaurant, Francois -- he is, indeed, French :) -- and he is the one who keeps everything running beautifully while making each guest feel welcome. We hope to see you again soon!
This was our first visit to the French Meadow Cafe. One our our daughters gave a gift certificate two years ago for Christmas, and highly recommended the Grand Avenue location, because they had been there several times. From the time we opened the door, until the time we left we were treated like we were the only ones in in the place. Our reservations were 6:30 on a Monday night, and it was about half filled, but I strongly believe that the service that we received would have been the same at rush time. We are NOT people who DEMAND immediate service but our server was there exactly when we needed water refills or to order desert. OH, the food was delicious. I had the braised beef rib, and my wife had the blackened fish tacos, and we both enjoyed both dishes. We also shared the cheese and apple salad, which could be a a full meal with chicken or something added, the organic hummus to share.... and we are Weight Watcher Lifetime member but because it was our 47 wedding anniversary, we ordered the Seasonal Fruit Crisp for desert, and it was big, BUT, we ate it all.
The freshness of the food ingredients, the use of local farm products, the care in preparation, the spot on service and friendliness of our server, the ambiance, PLUS and most important part was the flavor of every dish we ordered, and although we consumed many different things, we still left feeling really satisfied with the price of the meal, and more important with the quality and the flavor and the presentation of each serving. Your staff is incredible!! Yes, we will visit again. One more thing. I made the reservation on line with open table, and that went well too, and I checked anniversary, and we were also greeted with "Happy Anniversary" from the host. GREAT JOB ALL AROUND!!
Thank you so much for choosing us for your anniversary celebration, and for the wonderful, detailed review. What you describe is everything we aim for, so it's very gratifying to know that we helped make your special day even better, and that you appreciate our commitment to organics and locally sourced food! I'll absolutely pass your compliments on to our executive chef Tim, as well as our staff. We hope to see you again soon!!
Great option if your looking to accommodate Vegan or Vegetarians in your group. For the rest of us, great selections. Try the Amish Chicken Tacos and don't forget the handcut fries. Good tap selections for the beer drinkers. Try four of them at once with one of their flights.
Thanks so much for the review! That's precisely our goal -- to offer something for everyone, whether they are vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore, without anyone in having to sacrifice. I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit and hope you'll visit us again soon.
Overall, I found it expensive, at close to 200 dollars for three, tip included. Just a little wine. By comparison, better value for money in Paris where 50 euros per person is common in a neighborhood restaurant.
First time at st. Paul location. Attentive server, good food, and easy to talk. Parking a bit tricky with elderly guests. Assume everyone can find something they like here.
Thanks so much for the review! Hope to see you again soon.
Good restaurant. It smelled great when we walked in, and the food was good. Not necessarily outstanding, but good. The service was attentive and good. I'd give it a second shot if I'm in St. Paul again.
We were seated right away, our server Kristen was lovely and the food was instagramable and so delicious! With health and environment conscious ingredients in every selection on the menu you cannot go wrong with anything you choose. I love this place and you will too!
The salads at French Meadow are great. Everything else that I’ve tried is very inconsistent. Sometimes it tastes great, other times it’s mediocre or bad. I will come back for salad but have given up on the other options.
Wonderful food, but quite loud. We were meeting a couple for the first time and since their English wasn't terribly clear, we had issues hearing. In a similar situation, we would choose a quieter venue. Delicious food, however.
Thank you for the review and recommendation. We know it gets a bit energetic at our busy times - keep in mind that during warm weather we have a lovely back patio with a quieter ambiance, which makes a great environment for intimate conversation.
First time at this location. Just as good, if not better than the Lyndale location. Seated immediately. Excellent service. Food amazing!
So happy you enjoyed your first time with us in St. Paul — and thanks for the review!
The salmon eggs benedict was very fishy, but the poached eggs and side salad were perfect. Their gluten free toast was delicious as well. Loved the FMB mocha.
Cocktails were a bit pricey and maybe make people ask for plastic straws...?
Thanks so much for the 5 star review, and for also pointing out the plastic straw issue. We are in fact very committed to reducing their use, & it has been our policy to not automatically give them — I’m surprised that you weren’t asked first! Based on your comment, we’ll review policy with staff. Our cocktails, like our food, are made with fresh & mostly organic ingredients, so some may seem a bit higher priced than you’d find at other restaurants. I hope you can taste the difference!
Long leisurely Sunday brunch with good friends. Two of us enjoyed the Zone Omelet; one had Omelet Special and the other had the Classic Egg bkfst. All delicious! We caught up for a long time in our cozy booth and appreciated the patience of our server. (Service was great —- and we left a sizable tip in extra appreciation.)
Yes! This is exactly what we aim for — a comfy place to be treated as family while enjoying delicious food — so reading this makes me happy. Thanks so much for sharing your quality time with us — hoping you’ll be back soon (I think you’ll enjoy dinner as much as brunch!)
The food is consistently great and the servers are all very helpful with natural personality who know the product and share their recommendations with ease when asked. If not too full from the entree the Tres Leche cake is worth the extra treadmill time!
Thanks so much! And agreed: just a *little* treadmill time — or not — as trade-off for Tres Leche, or any of our desserts, is a deal we recommend any day ;)
Because of the time of day, mid morning, the restaurant wasn't too noisy and we could actually have a conversation while enjoying our breakfast. Much better than later in the day when the noise level racks up big time. This is an ongoing problem in most restaurants and is too bad as it affects customers ability to enjoy their food and visit.
Nearly everything was superb, with one exception. My daughter complained that her green curry tasted odd, and wondered if it contained an ingredient that she was unfamiliar with and didn't like. She quickly gave up on it completely; it was inedible to her. I assumed it was just not to her liking. Then toward the end of the meal she moved the plate away from her because it smelled bad. At this point I took a taste and smelled it. I believe the coconut milk was bad. We mentioned the problem to the waitress, who talked with the kitchen and told us we would not be charged for the curry. I wish we had said something earlier in the meal. Had I realized that there was likely something wrong with the food rather than it simply being a matter of my daughter's taste, I certainly would have. My food was delicious! The service was great, and the restaurant resolved our issue to our satisfaction.
Wonderful healthy food with awesome gluten free options
Had Sunday brunch with friends and it was packed. Great ambience, but noise level very high so difficult to talk. Waitress was prompt and service was good. Food: reasonable portions, but prices a bit high. Avocado toast was terrific. Organic Oatmeal was good, as was scrambled egg whites. The "breakfast potatoes" however, were unappetizing gray colored, mushy, and they had a strong peculiar taste.
I love French Meadow. My husband, family and I go here for every special occasion dinner we have. It’s our absolute favorite restaurant. The food never disappoints, the service is exceptional, and the restaurant itself is clean and beautiful. You can never go wrong with French Meadow, both the St. Paul and Minneapolis location.
We had a wonderful experience. We were not rushed. The food was good and the ambience was very festive.
Don’t understand why a Tuna Melt needs Aioli. Earth Wing sauce tasted pretty much like brown simple syrup. Maybe offer some spicier/less sugary coatings?
This was a Thanksgiving meal. We ordered the Traditional Thanksgiving Meal and the food was mediocre at best. The turkey was overcooked, the gravy was bland, the green beans were cooked just right, the stuffing had no flavor, the squash was good but a very small portion. We ordered pieces of pie to go and ended up with slivers. The crust was disappointing---tasting more like mass produced pies at restaurant chains. But the ambiance is always delightful and generally I like the food at French Meadow. I'm not sure I could recommend French Meadow for their Thanksgiving meal.
Great service. Delicious food. Cool spot. Thoughtful vegetarian and vegan options. We had a wonderful meal.
Outstanding as always! Great food, service, and time with my family.
Roasted beet salad is excellent, as is the wild rice soup.
We had a reservation and the staff were ready to seat us immediately when we arrived. Our waitress was perfect and the food, Avocado Toast with Eggs, was delicious.
Always good eats at French Meadow.
We've been to French Meadow / Blue Stem on Lyndale several times. We were surprised the food was not as good. Very little fish in the fish tacos. Bacon on the turkey burger was rock hard. The bun was dry. Definitely not was we expected.
Excellent grilled salmon / apple cheddar salad. Perfectly prepared! Service was a bit disappointing... server rushed us to settle the bill as her shift was over, then we were ignored for over an hour - no water or coffee refills, no offer of dessert, very disappointing.
Seated for dinner at 5:30 pm. This was a first time visit. Food and service were very good. I found the seating somewhat crowded as there was little space between tables. Noise level rose as the crowd increased (to be expected) and conversation became difficult.
Lots of delicious food. Special thanks to Kiera, our server, for recommendations.
Enjoyed the dinner of curry and Soup and Sandwich. Enjoyed espresso and desert after dinner. Nice wine and bread. Enjoyed desert too. Keep up the great work.
The restaurant is very cute and cozy. I made a reservation for breakfast and was seated quickly. I ordered hot chocolate and it was lukewarm. All the items on my plate were also warm, not hot. I tolerated most of that, but asked for them to replace the chorizo, which was done quickly.
While I appreciate the speed of service, more needs to be done to ensure that you are delivering hot food items.
The avocado toast is outstanding! Highly recommend. Everything is good.
