French Meadow Cafe' - Grand Ave
French Meadow began as the first certified organic bakery in the USA in 1985, baking organic artisan yeast-free breads. Our popular Uptown Minneapolis cafe opened in the early 1990's, and we later opened our Grand Avenue cafe, near Macalester College, in response to a demand for fresh, healthy dining options in St. Paul.
We feel so fortunate to have French Meadow Café right in our neighborhood. The service is wonderful, and the charming manager always comes over to greet us. Three in our family have celiac disease, and the staff at French Meadow are knowledgeable and conscientious about providing gluten-free food. And the toasted-coconut cake is our favorite go-to dessert for special occasions! The back patio also offers lovely outdoor seating. A great place all around!
I love French Meadow. The only thing preventing me from scoring higher was one of the entrees.
My potato flat bread was very good. However my friends Elk burger was dry and overcooked.
Our service was perfect! We absolutely loved the beet salad with added steak and the earth wings!! I love the atmosphere! Can’t wait to go back!
Mathca green tea latte with almond milk was amazing as usual! Had the Zone omelette with all of the yolks and GF bread-YUMMY! Great portion size-no too much, not too little. Will be back for sure!
Server was just ok, didn't tell about daily specials, had to ask for plates, felt rushed.
We keep going back to French Meadow because we support healthy eating and clean, sustainably sourced food. Unfortunately we've had terrible luck with their service. Last night we ordered the mussels as an appetizer and they arrived cold. But before we had a chance to let our sever know our food arrived within minutes of the appetizer. So we started eating and when we fou n.v d the server she apologized and removed the mussels, bringing back replacements as we finished our entres. The entire meal was poorly timed. Very diasppointimg. If we didn't love their food, we would have written them off a long time ago.
My husband and I were absolutely floored by how amazing the food was - especially the "earth wings". I'm vegan and gluten free so this was such a treat, and my non-diet restricted husband loved them too! I got the healing plate and that was so refreshing for Summer. Our server was very good; He gave us our space and helped us when we needed, and was very friendly! My husband kept saying "we gotta make this our new spot" because we were just so impressed with this delicious and nutrition food.
We ate and also pre-ordered a GF cake. The food was good, with enough dressing on the salad and sauce on the eggs Benedict. The waitress patiently answered many questions before we ordered, but once we had the food didn't come back except when we asked someone else to seek her. The cake ordering was a mess. First she said 48 hrs ahead (and the website said that also). Then she said 72 hrs unless needed after 1 PM. When I called to make sure the cake was ready, they could not find the order, but my cr card was charged. They did give me a cake at no charge and the butter cream was fabulous. The cake layers and filling were dry and absent in some places. Also was noisy at 11:30.
We were excited to order the tempeh reuben, since it has been too long! The service was good, the reubens were enjoyable, but everything was a little spendier than it needed to be. We will still be back when the reuben cravings return.
We had an excellent dinner at FMC and ate part of the time outside and then went indoors (a small rain shower). The food was great and they had wonderful vegan options for me. Service was spot on and very moderately priced. I am from CA but if this was a local restaurant for me-I'd be here weekly!!!
Delicious food. Friendly service. Fast service. Always enjoy it.
Food was fine. Upon noticing they had an opening within the hour I made the reservation. the hostess said they could seat us this time but in the future I needed to have the courtesy to call them ahead of time. Ideally the day before to confirm the reservation as their online reservations are sometimes not up to date. Their reservation problems are not my problem. In the future I don’t need this kind of hassle. Probably won’t return.
Recommend French Meadow all the time! It's our favorite place. You'll find us there 1-3 times a week!
They were very busy on an early dinner Saturday night. Nonetheless everything was well prepared and fabulous. Wait staff was very good. I was on crutches and everyone was very helpful.
The restaurant manager stopped to make sure our meal was satisfactory. Will go there again. One of my favorites.
I really love the diversity of the menu - as the only vegetarian and dairy-avoiding person in my family, with a mom who has a sensitive palate ... there's always something for everyone! I also appreciate the focus on organic, local, and sustainable ingredients. My only wish is for more vegan desserts :)
Great option for Mother’s Day! I loved the omelette of the day! They served it with a salsa that was yummy! The restaurant was neat, clean and nicely decorated.
There was no Mother’s Day brunch, only the regular breakfast menu which is limited but the blueberry muffin was so good it made up for it!
Loud...hard to have a conversation. Service was great. I like the local organic intent. The Healing plate was good, the apple salad was decent, a bit dry. Stuffed mushrooms were mediocre...that should be an easy one to get right.
Food was very fresh, beautifully presented and staff was exceptional,
Always good food. A little too noisy for our elderly mother.
Wonderful restaurant, great food, good ambiance and great service. Lots of gluten free options. Slightly pricey, but good for special occasions.
Great place for a date or any other special occasion
Service was very slow, took a long time to get our drinks even after we ordered them. I ordered soup which was not brought out with the rest of my meal. My daughter had ordered a cake for my husband's birthday, it was not at all what she thought she was getting (they told her is was a white cake when it was actually chocolate - an issue as she doesn't care for chocolate) - staff had to search around for a while to find the cake. Coffee refills were cold - rather disappointed in the overall service on a Sunday evening when they didn't appear to be extremely busy.
always fun to visit French Meadow. food is always good and so is the service not to mention the yummy desserts.
Service was a little off from their usual
Good is excellent with healthy choices
And great desserts
It was a very warm atmosphere with great food at great prices.
Good food and service. Vegan options appreciated.
Our server was very good but it’s noisy in spite of the fact that I asked for a quiet corner.
Great food and service, with lots of gluten free and vegan options to satisfy everyone’s wants and needs.
One of our favorite places. Always an excellent experience.
Met friends before going to see Michelle Obama
1. having grown up in San Diego (where fish tacos were first introduced to the USA in the early 80’s), I can confidently say that if you know what a fish taco is *supposed* to taste like, don’t order from here. These are an abomination. If you’ve never had a REAL fish taco, these are probably fine.
2. The booths are terrible. Very flimsy. You will feel every shift, movement, bounce of the people behind you. And heaven forbid they have children - you’re in for a ride.
Fast service, delicious food. I had made a reservation for the wrong day but they were kind enough to get us in. Great gluten free options!
Our group of eight enjoyed a wonderful meal and outstanding service. Thanks to our server for doing a fabulous job with a large group. She was very attentive without rushing us. The food was top notch too.
Noisy, hard to visit. Soup was tasty but watery. Service very average.
French Meadow is always busy and loud for lunch. It’s a great spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Love this spot!
Josh our server was awesome. He was kind, patient and gracious even as the dinner rush moved in.
Lovely ambiance and service. The salmon eggs Benedict was perfect. Great coffee too. And they brought my Freon dessert for her birthday.
While I would recommend French Meadow, I do so only because they consistently offer vegetarian fare. The food is good, although I feel overpriced, but the service is what separates French Meadow from other restaurants. I have never been to French Meadow without thinking it would be aided by adding another waiter to its evening staff.
My husband and I frequently go to French Meadow on Grand for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We love the healthy options, nice wine and beer selections and always have really great service. When the restaurant is full, it may be a little loud, but certainly doable. Parking can be a challenge so allow for extra time to park during busy hours.
Some of our favorites have been the breakfast quesadilla, the elk burger and the zen salad.
