French Market Grille Ratings and Reviews
I cannot praise Patrick and his FMG enough. Just there for one of their specials: $19.00 for a petite filet and a lobster tail. I was able to cut my filet with my fork! The sauce was divine.
This is French food at it's finest. I encourage you to try this great restaurant.
I had the liver and onions and it was the best I have ever eaten. Being from the South, liver and onions was a staple growing up so I often get it when it is on a restaurant menu. This version was light, delicious, and served with an excellent light sauce. Thanks, French Market Grill!
Made reservation but not enforced. Not crowded but foods took long time. Funny thing is waiter came to ask did we get our foods when the table was bare and clean. Plates were wiped on edges but see wiping pattern so not sure of the wiping material. The only quality was plates were very hot. Foods may have been sat in oven and delayed serving. Very disappointed.
We were here for Thanksgiving, so not an average night. The food was excellent, and everyone left happy. I never like going out for Thanksgiving, because the food never seems as good as home made. This was. The kumquat in the cranberry sauce was amazing.
The service on Thanksgiving was spotty. I doubt that they are used to being this busy, and may have been short staffed. We were there at an odd time.
We will go back and I hope at that point to be able To update the service to be excellent.
The French Market Grille has become an institution in our neighborhood over 20+ years...under the same management. It serves classic French cuisine at reasonable prices that are hard to beat. I thoroughly enjoyed classic sweetbreads served with wild mushrooms and a wonderful reduction sauce. For my entree, I had their grilled calf's liver and onions...which were outstanding, served with haricot vert green beans. My wife had escargot for an appetizer and prime top sirloin w/ béarnaise sauce. We topped this off with capucinno split a crepe suzette. It was all excellent.
We hadn't been there for awhile because we travel a lot for business. We have dined here many times over the past 20+ years thought and one thing I can say is that the quality of their food is very consistent.
Great food - steak was grissly though. Service was great. They REALLLY need to warm it up ambience wise - felt like we were in a bus station - no, not the Musee D Orsay. The lighting overall was way too bright. Seating in the bar needs to be redone - could be a lot more French and cozier.
Austin needs a good french restaurant! Please figure it out and stick around!
The service was very poor. The restaurant was busy and the Owner and 1 waiter was the entire staff. Ordered wine and never got it until my husband got up and asked for it again. We waited a good long time for our food and were served our entrees and had yet been served our salads. They took them back and about 15 minutes later they tried the same thing again. They finally got it right but the food was really only so so. We won’t be back. It is a shame but when you are spending $50 a person you expect decent service.
Waiters and servers very rude. Food was covered in orange... too much orange. Ran out of water, no one checked up on us. When they said it’s tome to sit down... they pointed to a spot and kept walking. I was aware what they did, but girlfriend followed them because it was awkward how they did that. I would never go back here, nor would I recommended.
By the way, their choice of beverage was wine or tap water
Service can't be worse. No host. Have to stand waiting for 30 minutes to be seated with reservation. Staffs passed by just like we are not existing. The worst part is even the owner (he is the host) didn't greet you and he is very rude towards the customers.
The foods were the worst French foods I have ever had.
PS, there is a group in front of me just couldn't wait and left. The owner gave a "what's the heck?" gesture when seating us and noticing that group had left.
The prix fixed meal was delicious! The lobster was succulent and the white wine cream sauce devine. Benjamin brought out a special dessert since I couldn't have the alcohol based options. It was sublime! Heavenly chocolate mousse with hard chocolate glaze. The whole meal was absolutely fabulous. This restaurant is a gem!
We asked to be seated on the patio for our 7:30PM reservation and the host didn't want to sit us out side because they were getting ready to shut down the patio and clean it (on a Saturday night when they close at 10PM. We protested twice but we met resistance both times and basically gave up. During our dinner there were still the two parties outside on the patio finishing their meals, so we couldn't have been that far behind them. At the end of the night the patio wasn't being cleaned in any fashion. In fact when we left the staff was up front having a conversation. The food was tasty (very French...i.e. one small red potatoe, one-half a carrot and 11 string beans...I counted) but the host was so rude, it basically caused the entire night to be a bummer.
We try this restaurant about once per year, even though it is the closest restaurant to our house. We have found that there are always issues, sometimes minor, sometimes not. Tonight was no exception.
The server/busboy who has worked there forever, does not have a clue as to what good service is. He barely looks at you. He only takes away dirty plates or refills water glasses when you say something to him. And, he couldn't be bothered.
Of course, this attitude emanates down from the top. The owner barely tolerates his guests. If you don't want to be nice to customers, then you should be in a different business. There was broken glass on the floor next to our table and nobody took care of it, even though we brought it to their attention.
This is really a pity, as the food is excellent. We had the French onion soup and then liver & onions for my main course; my wife had salmon. Both were cooked perfectly and were delicious.
The desserts were equally as yummy. However, without an improvement in service, I doubt we will be back before another year. Too bad.
For being a French restaurant, this was nothing special considering the prices. The sauce on the sea bass was broken and oily. Decor is dated. There was one waiter for the whole restaurant. Only 3 tables occupied on Friday night at 6:30. (should have been a clue).
Wine and salad appetizer were the only highlights. For $140 meal for two and the quality of the food, won't be going back. Not sure how they are staying open all these years.
My wife and I have dined at the French Market Grill many times over the years. And I am sorry to say that this was the very first time I have been a bit disappointed. Though the service was very good, the steak that I ordered was very tough. At the same time my wife was very pleased with her meal and we will be returning in the future.
We really enjoy eating at this restaurant. The atmosphere is very nice. They have a nice inside and a very nice patio.. The food is very good. I had sea bass with mediteranean sauce and my husband had shrimp scampi with pasta. We both thought our dinner was great. The service was good as well.
Not very busy on a Sunday evening, excellent service, great food, good wine, all at a reasonable price. Pleasant to have a good traditional French meal for a change instead of the ubiquitous "fusion" food that all the currently fashionable restaurants are serving.
