We had brunch there, all three dishes looked great and tasted great and were subtly different from the usual fare without being in any way off-putting. The dining room is really pretty and staff were all courteous.
Cocktails were mixed. My wife ordered the Darling Nicky, whch was a bit much for her but lucky for me: it was delish. The bourbon cocktail I ordered was good, got mellowed and improved as the giant ice cube melted while I was drinking the Darling Nicky.
The side of the brussel sprouts we shared for an appetizer was fantastic, sprouts perfectly done without that bitterness so common.
The duck breast was off-the-charts fantastic. Top 5 dishes I've ever had. I'll usually go for a steak, and with the two great options on the menu it would have been so easy. So glad I went for the duck!
The person who greeted us at the door was unfriendly and didn't give us a very welcome feeling. The service was slow despite the fact that the restaurant was not full. The food was adequate except for the Escargot with Scallops and Tuna which were excellent. There are so many great options in this neighborhood. I wouldn't put this at the top of my list.
The foie gra came with 4 slices of yummy toast, a mustard seed thingy, some crumb thingies and reduction. Best ever. I'm a beef person, but since I had their kick-A steak last time, I enjoyed their equally scrumptious leg of lamb chop this time.
Although I used to love this restaurant I feel it has degraded a bit. I have been coming for about 2 years now. There were a few things I've always loved on the menu, but lately I felt the food wasn't as tasty as it once was and the portions are getting smaller. The prices have no mt changed to reflect this. This place is pretty expensive to begin with and now that you get less food it's less likely I will keep going. We always order the fried anchovies. Although I can't remember exact how many it used to come with I can tell you that the other night it came with 4. 4 fried anchovies and 2 lemon slices. Along with a bunch of appetizers that my girlfriend and I always share (usually around 4 or 5) we orders the oxtail ragout pappardelle. Same thing here. There was a decent about of meat, but there 3 (I counted) 3 pappardelle noodles. This dish was more of an appetizer size, not an entrée. Wouldn't be a huge deal but this dish was $25. I hate to sound negative, but I just feel like I am not getting a great value for my money. 2 people, 4 appetizers, 1 entree, and one of the least expensive bottles of wine our bill was over $185 with tip. Pretty expensive for what we got. I'm not saying I'll never go back, it just used to be one of my faves in BK but in the future I will be trying other places.
French Louie is one of the best dining options in Brooklyn. Doug (the owner) and his staff have made sure the food is consistently high quality and delicious, but it also is the friendliest dining experience we’ve had during the 7 years we’ve lived in Boerum Hill.
The environment is simple, refined and welcoming. We’ve never been disappointed and it is our goto place when friends and family visit us. Great for dinner and brunch. If you haven't tried it’s sister restaurant Buttermilk Channel that is also a must!
Food was good, ambience was cozy, mimosas were tasty.. the only thing is that they close at 3pm to switch to dinner service and we were not made aware of this- we wanted to order another item and were told no. It would have been nice to know..
I love being able to go to a beautiful place and know that the food and service will be amazing each and every time. The reliability and consistency matters and is greatly appreciated! Thank you! The duck is always perfect — you can tell how much your chef cares about everything. I’ve been to FL about 6 times now and it’s basically my new favorite spot.
best restaurant in our neighborhood, hands down!
Hostess was very nice but our server was lacking. Dinner was great but tainted by the service.
This was the right choice for our special family (party of 7) celebration. We are a picky group as we are in the restaurant business. Tired of the Manhattan scene, we made the right choice. A warm welcoming environment, perfect menu and great wine choices that matched the food, making it easy to quickly get over the ordering process and enjoy our company. The opportunity to enjoy our time together was further enhanced by service that never interfered but was always there by our side when we needed it. Food was very good also.
To the team: Thank you so much for doing it right. Happy Holiday's !
French Louie was well worth it as an elevated date spot. The food was excellent, service attentive and a nice setting.
I had the Eggs Louie and a side of Duck Fat Potatoes for a very pleasant and delicious Sunday Brunch. My friend had the French Toast with Creme Fraiche which looked really tasty also.
It was just ok for NYC
Food was good but service could have been better. Our waitress disappeared for 15 minutes.
This is a beautiful restaurant. I would choose more carefully next time as it’s quite pricey and the food was just ok.
Brunch was great. Food was excellent. Service was a little bit slow and not too friendly but otherwise I loved it. Would defiantly go back for the food and hope that I just caught the service on a bad day. Everyone is allowed once in awhile.
We had our Thanksgiving dinner here this year. The food was amazing. Very generous and extremely tasty. I had the turkey. This plate itself was moist and delicious. But the sides, oh the sides - they were outrageous. The best-mashed potatoes, roasted Brussels and other winter veg and the squash gratin with prunes were unusual, pleasantly pleasing. Hubbie had the Boeuf Bourguignon which was folk tender. Plus the pork belly had him speechless it was so darn delicious. The ambiance of French Louie is really lovely. Not only is it decorated as cozy french style bistro, but the staff really made it an exceptional experience for us. Everyone was so friendly and treated us as if we were (maybe better than) having their own families come in for holiday dinner. Especially on a holiday, I cannot gush enough about how amazing the FL team was with us and everyone in the restaurant. We will be back for brunch and dinner.
We went to French Louie for thanksgiving lunch. The food was excellent. I had the special thanksgiving menu and oysters which were both delicious.
The wait staff were incredible and very accommodating of our requests to make the meal gluten free. They even did gluten free gravy.
I will definitely be back
Always consistent. Everyone helpful. Wheelchair friendly.
Never fails to be a great dining experience!!
This is the second time we've been here for a birthday. The food is very good and the service impeccable. It is a bit on the pricey side so very good for special occasions.
Wonderful dining experience! 5 stars for sure. Will definitely be back!
Really enjoyed our meal as well as the scene. Super gracious, easy and accommodating for special request related to food allergies. Lovely, creative and delicious food. Will absolutely return.
Always excels, never disappoints. Great place to take your Manhattan snob friends -- they will become Brooklyn converts after the first bite of fried anchovy, not to mention the duck, the chicken, the cuttlefish, the bananas foster. The golden glow that the lighting emits is warm, welcoming and flattering. Five well-earned stars.
Always delicious and a wonderful experience! Will continue to go back
One of Brooklyn's treasures. If you think chicken is a boring thing to order wait till you taste theirs!!! Also, don't miss the deep-fried anchovies.
Always enjoy dinner here. A neighborhood favorite when visiting my daughter.
I've dined at French Louie a number of times over the past few years.I enjoy the ambiance, service and the cuisine. The food was always outstanding, but this time, for the first time, it wasn't up to its usual high standards.
The food was overall very delicious and beautifully presented. The service was warm yet impeccable. The wait staff picked up that we were celebrating a birthday without our explicitly telling them and brought dessert with a candle for the birthday person. We had a delightful dining experience.
Great spot for brunch with friends/family are in town!
I will not queue for eggs so the fact that you can make a reservation for brunch is a huge advantage to my mind - and then the food and atmosphere is really enjoyable is a bonus.
Wonderful dinner, Very tasty duck and appetizers .The service was wonderful and very caring . They even gave us a free dessert because it was our 50th wedding anniversary
Wines by the glass should offer a wider selection, and more vegetarian dishes would be appreciated,
Food was good, but the server was uneducated about the menu and didn't check up on us often. The butternut squash was the highlight of the mall.
I have tried French Louie at least 5 times now and I won’t go back. The food is good, but the portions are small and the price is high. Friends ordered a side of fries and they brought them to the table cold. The service wasn’t great either.
Great dining especially the moule frites and friendly staff.
French Louie appears to be a very popular neighborhood spot with excellent food and friendly, attentive service. The biggest drawback was its excessive noise, mostly from a crowded room with no attempt to dampen the sound using soft surfaces or other typical tricks. However, the food makes up for it. Our chicken liver paté was excellent. The perfectly cooked roast monkfish was served with a novel combination of vegetables that worked well with a tasty, original mustard vinaigrette. The merguez sausage with linguine also had a very nice combination of flavors. Overall, portions are not large, but they are adequate, and the flavor more than makes up for the size.
Beautiful restaurant, food was not good. And expensive too! For this beautiful ambience and super nice wait staff, they should figure the food out. My 30 dollar steak was boring, side dish with squash lacked flavor and a nice texture. Actually, we had a really nice time because the restaurant was so pretty and friendly. Too bad about the food.
We've eaten here many times, love it. The service was on the lackadaisical side this time - can't stand when you have to wave down the waitress when you want another glad of wine. You deliver apps and see we are done with drinks....why not ask? Happened every time. Wasn't horribly busy then so no excuse.
French Louie does offer delivery in partnership with Caviar and Toast.
