A laid back whisey lounge and smokehouse, serving retro cocktails in an historic building. Freedmens in Austin, Texas offers the best of flavor and service. Popular menu items include the smoked beets, beef brisket, house-made sausage, smoked turkey breast, pork spare ribs, jalapeno cheddar grits and more.
Freedmens has over 180 whiskeys, a variety of wines, and local beer. Save room for the smoked banana pudding!
By evening, some of the Freedman's signature dishes were already gone. Wonderful food, great front porch. Definitely worth going and going again.
The server was great -brought a bowl of water for Daisy
moved us to a table with an umbrella
Great food -I live in Houston -I will travel back to dine at Freedman's
Visiting our kids who recently relocated to Austin. We wanted brunch, they wanted bar (I wanted barbecue). Got all that, plus a dig friendly patin.
The food was exceptional. The brisket a master work! The drinks superb! The service terrific! The desserts a marvel!!!! Long live Freedmen's!
There's good BBQ in this town and there's great BBQ in this town. Freedmen's is definitely in the latter category. I understand not wanting to settle for mediocre BBQ when there are some very good options in town. What I don't understand is why anyone would wait in a 3 hour line when the food at Freedmen's is just as good (actually, better, in my opinion) as the other place that starts with an F.
Sides at BBQ restaurants aren't usually my favorite, but anyone who even remotely likes beets will be blown away by the roasted beets with gruyere cheese. Also, the German potatoes are much more flavorful than your typical potato salad.
The brisket has an amazing crust and is super tender. The ribs (both pork and beef) fall right off the bone.
We are from australia and have been touring the southern states for 5 weeks. We were given a recommendation by family I'm Australia who knew a blogger in the states. We booked online for six people for 7pm dinner. We arrived on time and were shown straight to our table by attentive staff. They advised that some small items were not available but that didn't deter us and we duly ordered brisket, ribs, pulled pork dishes and various accompaniments. All the food arrived in a short while and was excellent. The waiter,Garrett, was excellent and was very prompt and had an excellent knowledge of all food and drinks. We had a great time and cannot speak highly enough of the place. It was the best food and service we had on our entire trip!
The food that we got the chance to eat at Freedmen's was AMAZING! We got there for a 9pm reservation because that's all that was available and were told there were 6lbs of briscuit, 1/4 of pulled pork and a few sides. By the time the waitress came to get our order all the meat was gone except enough for 2 chopped beef sandwiches :( It was disappointing because we were really excited to try all they had but didn't get the chance. The old fashions and the chopped sandwiches we AMAZING and on point!! The waitress was kind enough to comp our sandwiches since they ran out which was very nice of her. We will definitely be back (and early this time!!) to try the rest of their menu! I recommend the macaroni and cheese side also :)
All we can says is it's better than Franklins! Hand down everytime it's just better!! Oh and the gin and tonic is outstanding!
The brisket literally melts in your mouth. A perfect combination of spiced bark and meat, with minimal mat. The only reason this got 4 stars is that the restaurant is not air conditioned (they leave the doors open), so it is extremely hot and uncomfortable - and the food is very expensive.
This place has the best brisket in town in my opinion, and I love the whiskey specials.
...in Central Austin, without standing in line, this is your place! Great food, a building almost as old as the dirt it's standing on, and friendly service.
Man the BBQ was awesome! Pork Belly was amazing!! Plenty of whiskeys to keep your throat coated! The place has lots of character and the staff is very friendly and the place is just cool!!! Parking is behind the venue and was difficult to get to because of the construction but that shouldn't deter anyone!! Must check this place out!
Celebrated Father's day with BBQ. We had never been before and it was overall pretty good althoughout we had to sit outside and it was rather hot and a bit windy. I wouldn't say this is a great place to bring your entire family (i.e. Kids).
Delicious dinner--I always get the trinity plate, the beets, and the cole slaw...and of course some of the great cocktails.
Love the smoky, rich flavors of everything from the peppery brisket to the goat cheese and beets to the smoked chocolate mousse! Mac and cheese is also fantastic. Can't wait to try what future deliciousness these guys will create!
The place had a rustic charm that most meat lovers would enjoy. This is a nice hang, could be romantic first date, or just a fab lunch spot. Size matters here and they don't fall short. German potatoes need to be replaced by mac n cheese, but the rest was great. Try one of the many fun drinks. You wont regret it.
Good was great. Way overpriced , especially the beef rib
This was a true taste of Texas for my East Coast Family while in Austin for Graduation Weekend! Food was outstanding!
I absolutely LOVE Freedmen's . I always know that whatever I order will be great. All of the staff are so knowledgable of all the menu items, drinks and food. I come here frequently but was delighted to bring the family from out of town! Just a really great place for brunch, lunch, dinner or even just a drink or two. And if you like whiskey... It's a must see.
Good luck parking! Not the restaurant's fault but be forewarned. Housed in an old stone building, the decor and atmosphere is what I'd call funky/inviting. Great outdoor patio. Very friendly and helpful service.
I got the Holy Trinity (pork ribs, brisket, and house-made sausage). The seasoning, texture, smokiness, and flavor were outstanding. BUT THE FOOD WAS COLD! Well, a bit below room temp, but you don't want to eat BBQ when the fat is already beginning to congeal on the meat. But enough about temperature - the flavor and texture of all the meats was outstanding. I had some leftovers - heated 'em up with some sauce - heaven! So when you order, ask that they make sure the food is hot. You'll be back.....and will give them the fifth star.
I gush about Freedmen's to everyone I know. It is so incredibly delicious that I'm salivating while I write this. I cannot even list my favorite things on the menu because literally everything I've put in my mouth there is the best. All I can think to do is to thank them: Thank you Freedmen's for investing so much thought, time, and skill into your food and drinks. The people who work here are fantastic to interact with, and the bartender even gave us a tip on how to make the perfect Ramos Gin Fizz (which he's totally nailed)... no more shaking the shaker for 12 minutes.
Great place with excellent food, however they do not have a/c and no umbrellas for there outdoor seating. We will be going back, just when the temperature drops.
The drinks were amazing. Excellent combination of ingredients. Very special.
They were out of the sausage and the grilled cabbage slaw which was a huge disappointment. I came to eat both of those items. The grilled vegetables were good but almost unrecognizable. Too much sauce, slightly overcooked. Important to make this side right, as the potato salad isn't for those trying to watch their carbs. Ribs were great.
Good, attentive waiiter.
My son and I had brunch outdoors at Freedmen's. It had been recommended to me by a friend whose son had his bachelor party there. It is great for groups big and small. The food is outrageously yummy and the drinks menu is totally fresh, new and exciting. I cannot recommend Freedmen's highly enough. If you visit Austin, TX and fail to go there you are truly missing something!
While the barbecue was very tasty when it finally arrived, our group of 8 did not have a good overall experience here. We arrived at an early time for dinner (5:00) due to travel plans, but that really did not excuse the slow and haphazard service we received. It took them a long time to get a table ready for us upstairs and then they sat us in a corner plastic table when other nice wooden tables were available. Another large group arrived and was served before us. When our food finally came, the meat selections were incorrect and had to be sent back to be fixed. The biggest surprise was the final bill for food and drinks: over $300 for 8 people including 2 that did not order meat. Not a very good value.
The menu was limited but the food was out of this world. We had the pork belly, sausage and chili, and wish we had tried everything on the menu. If you love barbeque, Freedman's is a must while you are in Austin.
The food and drinks were outstanding, BBQ was the best I ever had. The only issue we had was the parking and for members of the group that used a taxi the wait was long.
Brisket sliders were amazing! The stuffed quail was delightful too.
Excellent food, some of the best barbecue we have ever had, Beef brisket was melt in your mouth tender, and the sausage and ribs were also excellent. We were sorry that we couldn't eat outside, but there was a large group on the patio. It looked very nice. Enjoyed our meal and would recommend this to anyone coming to Austin. The only drawback was the parking situation, but the valet handled that for us.
We have been to Freedmen's twice now, and we've had a similar experience both times.
The building itself is a great-looking stone building with a quaint outdoor table, and a great marble bar, which I am told used to be an old soda fountain. This is a neat place in the heart of West Campus, and you can spot it by the wonderful smoked smell.
My girlfriend and I have been here twice and both times we have absolutely horrible service, except when we were at the bar. Speaking of the bar, they have excellent cocktails and are very attentive. There cocktails are somewhat expensive, and I wonder how a place on West Campus can survive with a mostly student clientele and expensive craft cocktails. Nonetheless, they were great and recommend Freedman's for this alone.
Moving to the food, Freedman's does barbecue well, as you would expect. Their sausage and their brisket are wonderful, and seem to melt in your mouth. However thats about it. The rest of the menu leaves something to be desired. There are no salads or alternate dishes for significant others who may not want just barbecue. They could probably add a brisket cobb salad very simply. In addition, the sides are poor, and seem to have issues with availability. Every time we ordered a side, they seemed to be out of it. They need to work on their options and consistency in availability.
Bottom line, come here for the cocktails, brisket, and the architecture. The service and the sides need some work.
I enjoyed a meal at the bar by myself with outstanding brisket -- I wish there were a few more side options, but you really can't beat the BBQ.
We really love this restaurant and often bring friends here. Our last visit was not quite up to par. We were seated at a table and the noise level bothered us more this time. Also, I recommended the potatoes and this time they were over-seasoned. I was the only one to really eat them at all. The bread was very good as well as the other sides of cabbage slaw and beets.
Great hostric building providing nice ambience. Upscale BBQ with a nice twist and non-traditional sides. The beets were tremedous, Ordered the Holy Trinity--but they were already out of sausage, which was puzzling since it was 7pm and the dining crowd was sparse.
Disappointed in liquor seelction. Did not have two of the local vodkas we asked for, and for touting itself as a whisky bar they had no honey whisky selections.
Parking is a huge challenge, so carpool, walk or go prepared to spend time "hunting" for a space.
We had an amazing experience at Freedmen's. Amazing food! Really great outdoor setting.Perfect service. We were a happy group of dinners.
The BBQ is very very good.
Parking is horrible. One tiny lot that might hold a dozen cars. If you can't find a spot in that lot, good luck finding a spot on the street where your car won't be at risk from being door dinged.
Freedmans called me at 5:30 to confirm a 7:00 pm reservation, and asked if we wanted to sit inside or out. I said outside would be great. When we got there, they said no outside seating because they had a party of 25. We proceeded to sit inside, and when we ultimately were done with dinner, we exited through the courtyard and so no less that 3 empty tables, and no party of 25 anywhere to be found.
Took more than 20 minutes to get our first round of drinks served to us.
Not worth the hassle.
The food was great. Unfortunately, we went a couple days after Valentine's Day & they ran out of basically every item on their menu. While their food was great, the menu was small & slightly surprising that they had run out of the few items they offered. I'd suggest going, but not around big events.
Freedmen's got Vakentine's Day right! Their menu is short but stout. The specials of
The day included a mouth-watering prime rib and turkey. The grilled beets with chevere and the jalapeño cheese spread with toast were amazing. Our waiter was very attentive and quick to offer suggestions. He was sweet enough to offer a smaller portion of food to my six year old. We sat outside in the beer garden. It was a little cool and drafty but the Silver Fox covering Sinatra was a treat. I ordered a special beet margarita-this could have been better. My guess is that they used a less than premium tequila but that was partially my fault for not asking before I ordered. We will definitely be back for more!
I recommend this place if you looking for a quick snack and a great drink. I had planned a dinner for my family including two toddlers and well,...I was surprised it was a bar. It does say bar on the website but was confused by their open table.com site.
Pit master Evan LeRoy really knows what he's doing. Went in for lunch and tried the Holy Trinity Plate and everything was great. Brisket had great bark. Pork ribs were on point and the black pepper was heavy. Sausage had a nice pop. Really recommend this place.
The barbecue is excellent. Particularly liked the pork. Drinking is not expensive if you get the whiskey of the month for $5 a pop. Service was a bit distracted but friendly and polite. Overall an excellent spot to hang out... We spent several hours there on Superbowl Sunday afternoon after a fine brunch. Check it out!
We were seated promptly and in a great spot for our 8pm reservation on Saturday, but they were out of the ribs and one of their specials that evening. That would typically not be an issue except they only have 4 things on the menu & it's a travesty to run out of ribs at 8pm on Saturday!
