By evening, some of the Freedman's signature dishes were already gone. Wonderful food, great front porch. Definitely worth going and going again.

Visiting our kids who recently relocated to Austin. We wanted brunch, they wanted bar (I wanted barbecue). Got all that, plus a dig friendly patin.
The food was exceptional. The brisket a master work! The drinks superb! The service terrific! The desserts a marvel!!!! Long live Freedmen's!

There's good BBQ in this town and there's great BBQ in this town. Freedmen's is definitely in the latter category. I understand not wanting to settle for mediocre BBQ when there are some very good options in town. What I don't understand is why anyone would wait in a 3 hour line when the food at Freedmen's is just as good (actually, better, in my opinion) as the other place that starts with an F.

Sides at BBQ restaurants aren't usually my favorite, but anyone who even remotely likes beets will be blown away by the roasted beets with gruyere cheese. Also, the German potatoes are much more flavorful than your typical potato salad.

The brisket has an amazing crust and is super tender. The ribs (both pork and beef) fall right off the bone.

We are from australia and have been touring the southern states for 5 weeks. We were given a recommendation by family I'm Australia who knew a blogger in the states. We booked online for six people for 7pm dinner. We arrived on time and were shown straight to our table by attentive staff. They advised that some small items were not available but that didn't deter us and we duly ordered brisket, ribs, pulled pork dishes and various accompaniments. All the food arrived in a short while and was excellent. The waiter,Garrett, was excellent and was very prompt and had an excellent knowledge of all food and drinks. We had a great time and cannot speak highly enough of the place. It was the best food and service we had on our entire trip!

The food that we got the chance to eat at Freedmen's was AMAZING! We got there for a 9pm reservation because that's all that was available and were told there were 6lbs of briscuit, 1/4 of pulled pork and a few sides. By the time the waitress came to get our order all the meat was gone except enough for 2 chopped beef sandwiches :( It was disappointing because we were really excited to try all they had but didn't get the chance. The old fashions and the chopped sandwiches we AMAZING and on point!! The waitress was kind enough to comp our sandwiches since they ran out which was very nice of her. We will definitely be back (and early this time!!) to try the rest of their menu! I recommend the macaroni and cheese side also :)

All we can says is it's better than Franklins! Hand down everytime it's just better!! Oh and the gin and tonic is outstanding!

The brisket literally melts in your mouth. A perfect combination of spiced bark and meat, with minimal mat. The only reason this got 4 stars is that the restaurant is not air conditioned (they leave the doors open), so it is extremely hot and uncomfortable - and the food is very expensive.

Man the BBQ was awesome! Pork Belly was amazing!! Plenty of whiskeys to keep your throat coated! The place has lots of character and the staff is very friendly and the place is just cool!!! Parking is behind the venue and was difficult to get to because of the construction but that shouldn't deter anyone!! Must check this place out!

Celebrated Father's day with BBQ. We had never been before and it was overall pretty good althoughout we had to sit outside and it was rather hot and a bit windy. I wouldn't say this is a great place to bring your entire family (i.e. Kids).

Love the smoky, rich flavors of everything from the peppery brisket to the goat cheese and beets to the smoked chocolate mousse! Mac and cheese is also fantastic. Can't wait to try what future deliciousness these guys will create!

The place had a rustic charm that most meat lovers would enjoy. This is a nice hang, could be romantic first date, or just a fab lunch spot. Size matters here and they don't fall short. German potatoes need to be replaced by mac n cheese, but the rest was great. Try one of the many fun drinks. You wont regret it.

I absolutely LOVE Freedmen's . I always know that whatever I order will be great. All of the staff are so knowledgable of all the menu items, drinks and food. I come here frequently but was delighted to bring the family from out of town! Just a really great place for brunch, lunch, dinner or even just a drink or two. And if you like whiskey... It's a must see.

Good luck parking! Not the restaurant's fault but be forewarned. Housed in an old stone building, the decor and atmosphere is what I'd call funky/inviting. Great outdoor patio. Very friendly and helpful service.
I got the Holy Trinity (pork ribs, brisket, and house-made sausage). The seasoning, texture, smokiness, and flavor were outstanding. BUT THE FOOD WAS COLD! Well, a bit below room temp, but you don't want to eat BBQ when the fat is already beginning to congeal on the meat. But enough about temperature - the flavor and texture of all the meats was outstanding. I had some leftovers - heated 'em up with some sauce - heaven! So when you order, ask that they make sure the food is hot. You'll be back.....and will give them the fifth star.

I gush about Freedmen's to everyone I know. It is so incredibly delicious that I'm salivating while I write this. I cannot even list my favorite things on the menu because literally everything I've put in my mouth there is the best. All I can think to do is to thank them: Thank you Freedmen's for investing so much thought, time, and skill into your food and drinks. The people who work here are fantastic to interact with, and the bartender even gave us a tip on how to make the perfect Ramos Gin Fizz (which he's totally nailed)... no more shaking the shaker for 12 minutes.
