Very nice lunch with good food. Our server was gone for a long time and had to ask where she was. Very pleasant and helpful, just went long periods without checking on us.
A dining room with almost no decor with a large bar. Food was good - crab cakes were okay. I look forward to trying more as only one visit is not good to make a judgement.

We were a table of 9 and only 1 plans to return. The food was gland and the Palm Springs salad was all lettuce-not as advertised. No one at our table loved their lunch. Two people at our table said they had heard the food was not good at Freds. You really need to address this!

Our end of the year lunch and we decided to try some place new. Freds in very "plain and open", not much ambiance and nary a decoration except for a vase at the end of the room; and even though it is on the top floor of the building, there really isn't a view except for other corner buildings.
But on to food and service. We were greeted warmly by the host who sat us at a booth as requested. Our server met with us shortly and took our order. We mentioned that we would share the dishes except for the chicken soup for my mother.
The chicken soup arrived and it was a disappointment because it was not hot hot. My mother did not like that the taste was very plain and the mound of chicken meat was unfortunately dry. I thought the chicken broth was fine and the soup would have been better if it was just a broth without the tasteless chicken meat.
The dishes we ordered to share were the roasted hen of the woods mushroom on coppa which was delicious, and the Oregon Dungeness crab cakes and fries which were also very good. Because we had mentioned that we were sharing the dishes, we expected the server to bring us small plates to divi up but we had to ask for it. We ended up using the small bread plates which was awkward.
So, 2 out of 3 dishes were very good. Service was fine but maybe a little bit more attention and anticipation to needs.
Great service. The SF Club and the Belgian fried were delicious.
Lovely setting. Food was good not great. Service was really not up to what I would expect. It did not feel special at all. Sorry!
We had a great time. Food took a while to come out but it was delicious when it finally came. We will definitely return!
I ordered the “chopped salad”. It was a sad looking pile of lettuce, some over cooked chicken, and a few sliced green beans. In no way was this a “chopped” salad as nothing was chopped. The lettuce was on its way out and it was barely dressed and tasted like nothing.
My friend enjoyed her burger, the fries were good and the drinks a good size — but that salad was pathetic.
I knew it would be overpriced but I truly expected better quality and execution on a lunchtime salad at a place where women go while shopping!
I really want to like the place, it would be a great go to when I’m Union Square but I don’t know I can do it again without fear of completely wasting my money again.
Service was friendly but only ok - not that professional as I would expect.
The SF club sandwich which is suppose to have Dungeness crab and baby shrimp only had a thin layer of crabmeat and some shrimp. For the price we paid, I’d rather go to The Rotunda and have an amuse buche, popover and a beautiful view of Union Square. I don’t recommend Fred’s as it is expensive and has mediocre food.

After ordering our Arnold Palmer drinks we were told by waiter that they has run out of ice tea
We placed our entree order and found out that the eggplant parmesan we were looking forward to trying was also not available. Pizza was good, but crab cakes were average. At the end of our meal we asked to split the check on two cards. The waiter charged both of us the full amount! It was not the relaxing holiday lunch we had expected.
So glad FREDS is finally opened in San Francisco! Great menu, great food!!!!! There are not many good restaurant in Union Square areas and finally a good one has arrived!
Staff was great, could use a bit more warmth - I realize they are going for a modern clean aesthetic but a few more items to warm the space would be better. Food is good, however more options would be better. Pricing is higher but it is Barney's...amazing cocktails.
Overall great space and ambience. Food however isn’t as good as Freds in NY. Was looking forward to the Freds salad and didn’t compare.
Staff was friendly, warm, and upbeat...always eager to provide, and it was refreshing to find that!

We arrived on time for our brunch reservation. The dining room was still fairly empty. The host led us to a table directly in front of the kitchen doors. We politely asked if we could be seated along a window or further away from the kitchen. After much debate the manager ungraciously moved us. While my party was much happier at the new location, and the server was very pleasant our celebratory brunch never fully recovered. The food was about as bland as the decor. Sadly, I don’t see an occasion or reason to return.

First time to Fred’s. Food was disappointing for the 3 of us. Mei on flavor. Only 1/2 bottles of wine on list &50+ price point (except sparkling) Returning to The Rotunda. Much better on all counts.
The food is good but the restaurant was empty, looked half-decorated.
Salads were good, bread was cold. Service was good. Room is sterile. Get some art, plants, flowers, etc. There was not one holiday decoration, extraordinary for Thanksgiving weekend. Didn’t feel like I wanted to return. Many better options nearby.
The food and service were above average but the prices are well above average. Two lunches, two cocktails, no appetizers or dessert and the bill was $92.00 before tip. It's worth a try, but don't go for value.
Food was bland for everyone’s dish

I had lunch with my brother this afternoon. We both had chicken paillard, but the chicken had no taste at all. We needed to add salt on top. The desserts were good. The server was friendly. Most of the customers there seemed like business people. I might give it the second try sometime later to see if have improvement. If the food still has no taste, I probably will not go back.
Large portions but very overpriced. Simply asked for no onions but think they thought I said no to the rest of the ingredients in the Cobb salad. It had three string beans, a few tomatoes and maybe a bit of avocado with the chicken and lettuce. Nice new option downtown but might not be an every time affair as it is expensive.
Fred’s was mundane at the most. The food las less than mediocre and the service average. I had great expectations since their competitor is the Rotunda, but was very disappointed
The service was good but our waitperson took a bath in his cologne. It’s only my opinion but every time he came to the table he overwhelmed us with he’s cologne. But liked the decor a lot. It’s also a little pricey $ 24-28 for a salad with lots and lots of lettuce but not a lot of ingredients. But the salads were very tasty. When I go to New York I always eat at Fred’s I felt that you had more choices in New York. But the place looks great.
Had the most wonderful experience. Both hostesses were absolutely wonderful. Entire team was delightful, professional and welcoming. Super happy Freds is in the City!
After waiting so long for Fred's to open - ugh. Room is completely uninspiring - no art, glaring light through the windows (which are too high to offer much of a view) uncomfortably utilitarian table layouts - looks more like an upscale senior center bingo room than a restaurant - or maybe a serviceable employee dining room. Servers were eager to be helpful, but were obviously not trained for the level of clientele. Food was just this side of disgusting - thrown together Nicoise salad, soggy and greasy crab cakes with cold frites and a particularly vile and rancid coleslaw that looked like it had been in the back of the frig for two weeks. Room is also very small - so the table of four screeching drunk millennial women next to us was not appreciated by the entire room. A table set up for a large birthday party in the middle of the room was broken down after the group left - and 30 minutes later the three tables were not even covered by tablecloths - just sitting in the middle of the room - lending to an atmosphere of caterer's back-room.
What the heck is Barney's thinking? Fred's in NYC is a great little spot to duck into - my lunch guest lives in NYC and has lunch several times a year there while shopping. She laughed and said "well - just another example of how SF can't shake it's Cowtown reputation." Really hope they wise up and hire a designer, a real chef and someone to train their staff as I'd love to have lunch at Fred's/SF on a regular basis!
Food and service exceptional. It was a bit noisy due to large groups of women who had a few too many. Lovely setting. A bit expensive so not an everyday place for lunch.
Servers are absolutely terrible - all male - who look they just got out of rehab/Delancey Street.
Our server disappeared mid meal and a new server arrived without any introduction or explanation.
Perhaps the original man went to shoot up?
Diners were dressed like slobs - there should be a dress code.
The back corner was cluttered with unsightly baby strollers.
The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus outshines Fred at Barneys in every way.
