Great Sunday brunch - best croissants in Philadelphia. The service was excellent (we were in a time crunch to get to the Constitution Center) and our server was kind, helpful and we made it in plenty of time. Starting with a first rate Bloody Mary, everything was tasty and served perfectly. I would highly recommend this wonderful new brunch place.
We went here (place has been renamed and I cannot remember the new name) for breakfast after a night in the city. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the food was tasty. Unfortunately we happened to be there at a time when an awning was being installed right outside of where we were seated. So the constant noise of a drill going into concrete was not our favorite :) Otherwise it was a good experience.
We were looking for a good meal in a city we are unfamiliar with, and found a gem at Chez Ben! The service was attentive, the food was excellent!
We had a wonderful meal. It is a terrific menu. The server was attentive but not overwhelming. The only downside was the noise from the bar - there was a loud group of four there. I would recommend this for a new place in Olde City.
The food was good. The service was horrible. The waiter COMPLETELY forgot about us most of the time, his coworkers served us. The place wasnt even filled.
Enjoyed trying a new place during Restaurant Week. All the dishes had a great combination of flavors. Service was friendly and attentive.
Good was very mediocre. We also didn't know that the restaurant was located in the lobby of the Renaissance Hotel. Service was good, but prices were high for what we got. Additionally, the temperature in the restaurant was about 60 degrees when we arrived. We literally had to ask to raise the temperature.
Not worth it at all!! Basically disappointing diner food!
I made a reservation at Chez Ben to celebrate New Years Eve with my wife and another couple. When we arrived we had to wait for 15 minutes before we were seated, much of that time was spent without having even been greeted. The restaurant was clearly significantly under staffed for the evening so I was willing to overlook the unwelcoming start to the evening. Once we were finally greeted, the hostess gave us grief for confusing her by “standing near the valet stand rather than the host stand”- I’m not quite sure how we’re were supposed to know the difference when neither was staffed, there was no sign, and they were both right next to the entrance to the restaurant. After we sat down we waited for at least another 5 minutes before we were even offered water. Our server was ultimately very friendly and was pretty competent given that he was a bartender by trade. We each opted for the 3 course prix fixe menu: between the four of us we had the lobster bisque, surf and turf, chocolate terrine, scallop tempura, duck breast, creme brûlée and bread pudding. Overall the food was OK, but it wasn’t really worth the price. The deserts were all pretty bad. My wife had a piece of plastic stuck in her chocolate terrine; the creme brûlée was a lumpy custard and had not been brûléed properly. My duck was cooked correctly and was tasty, if not particularly interesting in how it was prepared. The one saving grace was that the cocktails were quite good and they comped two of our drinks in recognition of how long we had waited. It was clearly an understaffed night so I wouldn’t say that our poor experience with the service was typical, however I can’t say that I’d recommend Chez Ben overall.
Burger was great, beer selection good, but the French fries were soggy and not fresh from the fryer.
The food was not very good. They keep changing the menu. Maybe they will get it right at some point. Bring back the french onion soup.
We didn't realize that the restaurant is part of the Renaissance Hotel, that would have been helpful in locating the restaurant. We were a party of 5, with 3 generations. There was plenty on the menu to please everyone, however 3 people ordered the same dish and it came out looking a bit different on each plate...
Service was very good, friendly, attentive and helpful ... all with a sense of humor!
We enjoyed our time at Chez Ben and would recommend to anyone looking for a casual place to eat or have a drink, before or after the Revolutionary Museum! Great location....
Delious food and service was exceptional! The atmosphere was wonderful for a date setting.
Went there for breakfast/brunch.. Menu was OK. The coffee was good. The omelette was oily and the toast was dry. The oatmeal was good. The parfait was very good and fresh. Decent place for a breakfast.

This is a basic hotel lobby bar/ restaurant with people in shorts and stumbling thru the lobby. This didn’t seem like a real restaurant more of a lobby bar with food. Thought the service marginal to poor.
The food was very good (truffle fries are amazing!). The service was very prompt and friendly. I would definitely return.
We went during restaurant week - the value for $20 lunch was amazing. Must have the duck confit eggrolls. The room is beautiful and wait staff were very friendly.
Service was very slow. Food was good but They were out of soup and French fries. Would not validate parking.
This could become a “go to” neighborhood place. The decor is inviting, the menu varied, the staff attentive and friendly. This was my first visit to this relatively new space and I found it quite pleasing.
One small complaint was that there seemed to be insufficient glassware. The bartender apologized; it didn’t prove to be a significant inconvenience.
we had a negative experience at Chez Ben. The service was awful; it took forever for someone to take our order (the place was pretty empty). The cocktails were gross and even missing ingredients. The food was good, but certainly not french and something you could make at home. We witnessed people walk out, and we were tempted to, as well. Olde City is such a fantastic section of Philly, and I fully recommend going out to explore rather than dine here.
This is not my first time here but has been my last. During restaurant week I ordered from the three course offering. I had the foie gras first course. It was an interesting combo of flavors that I liked.
I had the chicken second course and really needed seasoning, particularly salt. While I would have asked for some, NO ONE ever came by to ask if I needed anything nor asked what I even thought of the dish. I couldn’t even get the attention of wait staff as they never looked around to see if anyone needed anything. This happened so often I even witnessed a potential patron get up and leave for inattentive service.
Third dessert course was finally ordered but 20 minutes later I still did not have it. My ticket was lost. Hmmm. Finally got it and took it and left. It wasn’t great creme brûlée - just char, no crunchy topper.
Again, not coming back and will not recommend this restaurant.
We had the special Food Wee menu. The selection was good, the food delicious, and the price fair.
We watched as staff soothed an irate customer (customer at fault) and were impressed by the way they handled the situation.
We are used to bread pudding being warm but maybe cold is the way it's done in the east.
Our server came over to take our meal order 20 minutes after we put our drink orders in. We were so hungry and kept trying to get a server's attention. The flatbread was terrible. The dough was spongy and dry q tasted like one of those pizzas that kids try to sell you door to door as a fundraiser. The duck entree had zero flavor. My cocktail was okay. Dinner for 2 was $160. Annoyingly expensive for bad food/experience.
It’s a pretty place with nice atmosphere. Perfect for a date night. We went out with my girlsfriends for some dinner time. We liked how pretty it was there, and upscale. But the waiter was no help. He was making us feel stupid for asking questions about the drinks and menu, and was being very cold and stuck up. Kind of ruined the overal first impression for us. But we did like the place. Food was alright. I got flatbread and was expecting it to be with cheese, but it was with sourcream. Just loaded with sourcream and beets on top.
Great food, great service, but I almost hate to say that, because I don't want this hidden gem to become packed with foodies! Perfect example of a menu that fits comfortably on one page, with just a few items in each category that are ALL superb! Nice decor, but hard surfaces all around made it a bit loud.
My experience at Chez Ben was underwhelming. Service staff was friendly like a neighborhood diner sort of charm. The food itself was nothing special or notable making the price of the dishes less than desired. I would not recommend coming here.
Cold mussels, server uncertain what was on the charcuterie board, booked my did not disclose this was in a hotel. Only upside it was quiet on a Saturday night, after eating there it was clear why. There are much better options close by

Food was disappointing
The service at this restaurant was comically bad in almost every aspect!
Excellent in every way. However, the configuration of the restaurant makes it impossible to get a quiet corner. You are either near the kitchen which has a large passthrough or near the bar.
Saw this restaurant on FYI Philly and it looked good. Went there on Friday night 6/1/2018. Arrived at six and went to the bar for a drink and to meet some friends. The bar was quiet. The bartenders made our drinks and they were good. It's getting close to 7:00pm and we had a 6:15 reservation. No one is in the restaurant at that hour and it's a FRIDAY night. My party of 4 sits down and our waiter comes over. We ask him about a few items on the menu and he tells us he is a vegetarian and doesn't know about any meat selection of seafood. Weird!! Could have said I see a lot of people order this and that and they seem to like it. No that wasn't said. So we order a few appetizers. The standout was the crispy octopus. Everyone loved it at our table. Ordered some mussels in saffron sauce. Ok. Nothing special. We also ordered the onion flatbread. It came out lukewarm and the onions seemed wet and wasn't appetizing. Diner was ordered and two of us got the steak. Nothing special here. Lukewarm again and a little tough. One member of our party had the hamburger. Although she said it said with a mustard sauce she stated that it was loaded with mustard and I guess overwhelming and too pungent. She left half of it. The other member of our party ordered the skate. She liked it very much. The place was empty when we left around 8:00pm and maybe we saw one other couple eating during our visit. Reason to go back? Can't think of any. Onward!!

We checked out the restaurants menu from their website. It looked good and decided to try them. Going there was a huge mistake!
We handed a menu that's different than that's online from their website. When asked, our water told us that was the old menu with an attitude of "I don't know and I don't care"
Comes the food... The glass of water has a nasty smell; the bread for the table was stale; the poach egg in the mushroom bread appetizer was cold; the grilled fish main course made from frozen fish that was not defrosted through then put on the grill which it was luke warm the best when brought to the table. AND, the sauce for the fish was blend. PLUS the link potatoes side were also cold.
The entire time we were there, there was a party somewhere in the building shouting very loudly. No one bother to check on the patrons in the restuarant to inform that the party may be bothersome.
The potato pruree was good.
Never going back to Chez Ben. We should be never charged. And can't pay me to eat the nasty food there with poor service. No wonder they offer 1,000 point on open table.
Please do yourself a favor and never go there.
the 1785 muscles are a must have. the food was excellent and had competitive prices for the location. they have an incredible kitchen and while the front end staff is learning about the menu and bar, they were attentive and honest when they weren’t 100%.
Just horrible. The restaurant was dead on a Saturday night except for the bar which was loud. The service was terrible. Food was even worse. Everything was too salty. Stay away!
