Frances never disappoints from the food and service, but had we not sat at one of the side tables it would have been very loud and difficult to talk. With that said, we had a server who was excellent with suggestions and comments on options, and we were very happy with the selections. Nothing is left to chance here as it’s a well oiled machine of quality!

Such great food and service. Never had a disappointing meal here. Tables are close (really close) together and it gets loud. But the service is always kind and attentive, and the food is really spot on.

This is our fourth time at francs since it opened. We live out of town but have enjoyed this gem on all our visits. I hate to say it but it is no longer what it started as. The first year it opened and we experienced it was magical. It has now become average. The service is still wonderful. I’m sorry but this was an average dinner with average food

I've greatly enjoyed every meal I've eaten at Frances (despite not loving their "signature" bacon beignets), and my most recent visit was no exception. The wild mushroom tagliatelle was rich and comforting, perfect for a chilly night. The pork chop was cooked just right (kudos to the server for clearly defining the levels of doneness the kitchen would provide for both the chop and the bavette steak), but the star of the night was my seared American Snapper: the combination of fregola (a faro-like pasta), olives and pistachio-fennel slaw was amazing. There was no combination of the ingredients that didn't sparkle on the palate.

I could quibble about the galette not being quite hot enough or the bavette being a little underseasoned, but overall, Frances remains near the top of my list of favorite SF eateries.

We had an excellent birthday dinner for my friend. The service is always wonderful. The panisse frites and maple bacon beignets are solid standbys. This version of the bavette, with chimichurri is absolutely to die for and highly recommended. Also, surprisingly, we dine at Frances and our bill is the same as many other neighborhood restaurants which are not nearly as good. So, while the food is incredible and inventive (the sweet potato soup with sweet potato chips, vinegary mushrooms, and rosemary rivals some of what they have at Atelier Crenn), it is also really good value for money.

We were glad to have a table on the side where there was more room. The other tables are too close together and make for an unpleasant dining experience imo. Our server Jerry was very gracious. The savory beignets were delicious. Really enjoyed the tagliatelle with mushrooms. Polenta was also very good. All around an excellent meal.

The lumberjack cake dessert was worth the visit alone - one of the best desserts I’ve ever had! But everything else was wonderful as well - especially loved the gem salad. Both the house red and white (pay for what you drink) were delicious!

The food was greatly lacking flavor. We ordered the Kale salad and it didn’t have any dressing. The duck confit was dried out. Disappointing and expensive.

Everything was amazing - every dish was a home run - service staff was a little slow and the place was awkward with how many tables they squeeze in but overall one of the better places in SF! Will definitely be back!

My best friend and I meet here regularly and we had another delicious dinner in a lovely atmosphere. We love Frances. The service is attentive but not intrusive and the duck confit was perfect. We ordered a carafe of the house red and it is a lovely food wine.

Once again our favorite San Francisco restaurant is maintaining its standard! The innovative menu is not overly long with 4 small bites (which are really not very small!) and 4 each of appetizers, entrees and desserts. Great choices in each category accommodating vegetarians and non-meat eaters. The service could not be better with great attention but still wonderfully friendly.

Francis is just a great low stress dinning experience. You get world class food and in a nice casual neighborhood environment. Really what dinning in SF is all about.

We ordered the clams, falafel, snapper, brussel sprouts, polenta plus dessert. Everything was perfect. The snapper was crazy good with a really nice crispy skin.

The desserts were perfect. Not too sweet but nice with a pot of Red Tea.

I don't drink a ton of wine but do like beer. They have small high quality beer list. Got the Prairie Brewing Standard Hoppy ale and it was extremely tasty.

If you want world class food in a really casual classy environment then you need to go to Francis.

Every time I go, I can't wait to go again.

One of our favorites! Food was excellent, as always. Unfortunately, this weekend we had less than stellar service, which is not what I recall from this restaurant. Waitress may have had an off night, but there was no warmth or joy in the experience. No chit chat or explanation of menu items, just there to do the job. I left disappointed in what had previously been my favorite restaurant/meal experience of all time.

The Frances experience is easily amongst the best possible in SF. The service, from the moment you enter the intimate establishment, is akin to being greeted by good friends. The food, all of it and without exception, is -amazing. The portions are adequate, but don't overly fill you, the ingredients are unique, but pair well, and the menu size appeals to those with decision anxiety. Honestly, just the consistently best experience you can hope for.

Everything about our evening at Frances was wonderful!
We were unfortunately very late for our reservation (late child care, tons of traffic). Kept calling to update and they were so accommodating when we arrived. We were having a rare date night for my husbands 40th birthday. Did bacon beignets, roasted beets & yuca, kale salad, mushroom fettucine app, falafel entree and side of cauliflower. We had to do little plates because there was so much that looked so good. Nothing disappointed.
In addition, they service and decor were on pointe. It was a truly memorable evening and I’ve already raved to anyone who will listen to make a rez asap.

Of the two salads, two entrées and dessert, only one dish, the kale salad, missed the mark. The rest were delicious and the presentation was very appealing. The service was exceptional, attentive but not intrusive. I look forward to my next visit. It has been some time since I left a restaurant with thoughts of returning.

We enjoy splurging periodically and Frances' has always delivered. Both the food and the service are fantastic. The environment is energetic and seating is tight so this isn't the place for an intimate conversation. We love it and it's always on our list of "go to" places.

We were very disappointed after really looking forward to our first time at Frances, which was highly recommended by a friend. Vegetarian options were simply not that exciting or seasoned well. Falalfel was salty, beans and carrots were mushy and not flavorful. We did enjoy several dishes but overall the meal was inconsistent and definitely disappointing.

Great ambiance and excellent service.
Came here for my fiance's birthday dinner and had an excellent time. Seating is cozy but we didn't really get too distracted by the conversations next to us.
The beignets were so good, great bacon flavor. Comes out warm with a nice creme fraiche.

I had a reservation for 2, our friend joined us at the last minute. We got to the restaurant and ask for a table for 3, no possible. We sat down at the bar and all the time we were there I noticed 2 sets of tables empty all the time, meaning, we could have set at a table.
I am a regular client. Not a good experience.

We had a great waiter who was very engaged and clearly wanted us to enjoy our experience. The duck confit was well prepared with very creative, well-balanced accompaniments. We had soup and salad for appetizers. I had hesitated in ordering the kale salad, because most have become so blasé, but this one was lively with a madras dressing--however over-dressed--and carmelized squash with pomegranates. The wines were nicely selected by our waiter and complemented our meal very well. Desserts, which included the Lumberjack cake, were deliciously sweet. I will add, however, that I ordered one dish that had to be returned, as it was overcooked: the fish. Though moist, it was chewy and without taste--not an acceptable state for a divine fish. They would not redo the order and asked me to reselect.
