Great mid week dining experience
This was one of the finest dining experiences I have had in SF!!
Delicious food, terrific attentive service. I hope to dine again at Frances.
Waiter was snarky, and it was loud, but food was great!
We loved this restaurant. Tables are close together but other diners were very friendly. Food was really delicious, perfectly prepared and we were really satisfied. Had to try the bacon croquettes-- they were surprisingly fluffy and, of course, delicious. Also really liked the octopus. The risotto was delicious, as was the pork chop-- we shared both. And the blueberry dessert was delicious, but I confess buyer's remorse, wishing I had had the lemon meringue... definitely so glad we went.
Would be good to ‘lighten up’ a little and smile from time to time when serving - we are at the bar and at times, the service reminded us of the jet blue terminal at JFK (lifeless or taking itself too seriously). Some may see the service as patronizing.
Example:When I was asked if I wanted sparking or still water, I graciously asked to wait for my partner to return from the bathroom so she can select - In return, the staff raised the eyebrow as if I asked for the restaurant to change their menu. It’s just too much and over serious. This isn’t Lyon, France and even there they stopped doing this.
The counter staff service was as lively as a robot made by IBM.
It’s not the first time we are there (we are local) and it’s the same story again. I decided to write as your food is stunning and the place is charming.
Lighten up and have fun with your customers. Doesn’t take too much. Owners, please read this.
Great service, warm and very classy but not stuffy presentation. The food is phenomenal, especially the beignets and the steak. Everything was seasoned and cooked to perfection. Good portion sizes, and very very flavorful.
Great overall experience
We go to Frances every 2-3 months, each time is a hit. The food is simply delicious, the staff is great. One of the best restaurant in SF, no doubt.
Exquisite food - one of the best meals I’ve had in months. The unique touches, such as house wine by the once and a daily market fresh infused drink make Frances both homey and refined at the same time. Love this place!
Frances is a very popular restaurant in the Castro neighborhood. Dined here a few times. The food is just getting better from each experience. We had the beet salad and grilled calamari as the appetizers. The calamari was perfectly cooked with a light dressing. The beet salad had some surprise favor, from the dehydrated beet pollen. Both were refreshing. For the entrees, we had pork chop and the fish. Both are perfectly executed.
The star of the night is the server. All the staff were very friendly but our waiter danced around the tables to take care every table. He provided wine recommendations but did not make the customers feel uncomfortable. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Beautiful ingredients so deftly prepared and integrated. Strong in every course and dish. Attentive but unobtrusive service was right on point. Loved it.
Frances is one of my favourite restaurants in San Francisco. The bacon beignet are a must have, so are the panisse frites, and the ever changing mains and deserts are always delicious. 9/10 times ill order the vegetarian main, not because im vegetarian, but its genuinely the best vegetarian food in the city. On our recent visit my husband and I shared the spring pea risotto and the pork chop with corn, peach and basil. We usually go for the house wine by the ounce for fun. Lovely staff and simple but beautiful interior make it the perfect spot. Thanks Frances team! You are a San Francisco treasure.
Great atmosphere and service
Love the food and service at this neighborhood gem. Just wish I didn’t always feel I was sitting right on top of other guests every time we visit. Last time had us at a two seater against the wall which allowed a little more space, but still crowded and noisy. Great menu, excellent unique wine list.
A wonderful restaurant if you want a try California cuisine style meal. Fresh, perfectly cooked, and creative. Not sure I've been to a better restaurant ever!
Incredible food and service. Jerry, our waiter, was a standout. Thank you!
It was kind of loud. Really difficult to hear my waiter and my date. Food was pretty good. The wait was long for the entree.
Panisse frite was unusual and delicious with sauce. You will not know it is made with chickpeas. Grilled bavette (hanger steak) sliced was awesome with trumpet mushroom. I had the paperdelle with artichoke also delicious, with duck sausage. Ask for the delicious bread. Great service. Feeling special.
Food and service was good. This was a far better experience than Octavia.
Fantastic food beautifully balanced. My only minor critique was my dessert. The Pavlova had too little lemon curd to my dismay and the merengue was too sweet but hardly enough to spoil a wonderful meal in this understated location.
Came here for the first time my boyfriend's birthday and we both absolutely loved the food and the experience as a whole. We'll definitely be back!
I took my mother to Frances for her last night in town. Absolutely lovely restaurant with exceptional service, elegant decor, and mind-blowingly delicious food.
Went for my anniversary. Service was great. Food also great.
Amazing food that was simply stated yet super delicious. Would highly recommend for any occasion.
Every dish was immaculate: flavorful, balanced, gorgeously colorful and felt both comfortingly familiar yet new. Our server Gerald was fantastic. The hostess was welcoming and gracious. The space is cozy and intimate and well appointed. We loved the delicate glassware. All the staff seemed to operate smoothly as one collective body, respecting each other and enjoying one another’s company. Overall fantastic experience.
The menu was what really attracted us to Frances and the Bacon Beignets were great. I loved the duck with pappardelle and the Spinach salad with marinated almonds. We also liked being able to drink the house wine by the ounce and not try to finish a bottle. The service was excellent, friendly and available when we wanted. The noise level was too loud for us and the aisle is a little tight but those are small criticisms. We will return to Frances
Exceptional simple and seasonal food in my neighborhood with exceptional service. Down side- tables too close together and a very loud noise level. Really affects the experience.
I will definitely go again. For us this is for a special occasion destination. The atmosphere is lovely and the service is flawless and very friendly. Each and every dish we had was not only beautifully presented but delicious. The grilled calamari salad was a standout as was the bavette steak and Sakura Pork. The main courses are very generous.
It is a small space and the tables are indeed close together, but not uncomfortably so. We went early on a week night and the noise level was fine for normal conversation with straining, and I really didn't overhear anyone else's conversation. Parking is a bit of a challenge so another mode of transportation might be a good option. We did find parking after about 15 minutes so not impossible. I feel with the service and quality of the food the price is very reasonable.
The food and service were outstanding! The only drawback is that the tables are quite close together and can be a little uncomfortable at first. Definitely will be back as I wanted to try everything on the menu! Everything we tried is worth ordering again as well -- seems you can't go wrong!
Wonderful birthday dinner!
Have been here before and always happy with food selection and service. Would NOT recommend for group or quiet, intimate dining
Amazing food, excellent wine list, and talented waitstaff.
Love Frances. Inventive but not precious. Always a great meal.
Packed in very closely to tables at both sides. No conversation privacy At all.
Green tomato and potato appetizer was tasteless and cold. The steak was good, but the grits were undercooked and again tasteless. The greens were slim in appearance. Terribly overpriced and overrated.
Frances serves excellent American cuisine with an emphasis on local ingredients and intriguing combinations of flavors and textures. We really liked the chickpea fritters, trout, and pork served with a melange of spätzle, almonds and pomegranate. We also liked the charming contrast between the upscale food and the low key vibe and decor of the room. Service was great. It's a little pricey, but we'd happily go back the next time we visit San Francisco.
The food was good but not what it once was. Slippage.
Made reservation almost a month in advance and still had to wait more than twenty minutes. Not acceptable for a Michelin Star restaurant.
Frances is a gem. It's the perfect blend of simple, extravagant, and cozy. The food is out of this world. The whole experience is a 'must'.
Sophisticated food combined with warm service, nice space, and fair pricing for the quality - hard to ask for more! It’s also fairly quiet, a rare find in SF. Can’t wait to return...
We had the Grilled Calamari Salad, Five-Dot Ranch Bavette Steak, Trumpet Mushroom Confit, Anson Mills Grits, and the Gem Salad. We ended with the Dark Chocolate Pound Cake. The whole meal was exquisite. I love this food.
