The largest party we can accommodate is six people. We have only one table that can seat 5 or 6 people and therefore, reservations for this table are made exclusively via phone.
Parties will be seated when all diners have arrived and can be held for up to 15 minutes past the reservation time before forfeiture.

The Frances experience is easily amongst the best possible in SF. The service, from the moment you enter the intimate establishment, is akin to being greeted by good friends. The food, all of it and without exception, is -amazing. The portions are adequate, but don't overly fill you, the ingredients are unique, but pair well, and the menu size appeals to those with decision anxiety. Honestly, just the consistently best experience you can hope for.
Of the two salads, two entrées and dessert, only one dish, the kale salad, missed the mark. The rest were delicious and the presentation was very appealing. The service was exceptional, attentive but not intrusive. I look forward to my next visit. It has been some time since I left a restaurant with thoughts of returning.
We enjoy splurging periodically and Frances' has always delivered. Both the food and the service are fantastic. The environment is energetic and seating is tight so this isn't the place for an intimate conversation. We love it and it's always on our list of "go to" places.
We were very disappointed after really looking forward to our first time at Frances, which was highly recommended by a friend. Vegetarian options were simply not that exciting or seasoned well. Falalfel was salty, beans and carrots were mushy and not flavorful. We did enjoy several dishes but overall the meal was inconsistent and definitely disappointing.

Came here for my fiance's birthday dinner and had an excellent time. Seating is cozy but we didn't really get too distracted by the conversations next to us.
The beignets were so good, great bacon flavor. Comes out warm with a nice creme fraiche.
I had a reservation for 2, our friend joined us at the last minute. We got to the restaurant and ask for a table for 3, no possible. We sat down at the bar and all the time we were there I noticed 2 sets of tables empty all the time, meaning, we could have set at a table.
I am a regular client. Not a good experience.
We had a great waiter who was very engaged and clearly wanted us to enjoy our experience. The duck confit was well prepared with very creative, well-balanced accompaniments. We had soup and salad for appetizers. I had hesitated in ordering the kale salad, because most have become so blasé, but this one was lively with a madras dressing--however over-dressed--and carmelized squash with pomegranates. The wines were nicely selected by our waiter and complemented our meal very well. Desserts, which included the Lumberjack cake, were deliciously sweet. I will add, however, that I ordered one dish that had to be returned, as it was overcooked: the fish. Though moist, it was chewy and without taste--not an acceptable state for a divine fish. They would not redo the order and asked me to reselect.
This is a tried and true neighborhood gem. Simple, bistro style with excellent atmosphere and fresh local items cooked to perfection. Great wine list and friendly service, this I see a must visit on your SF bucket list. It’s unassuming, understates and reliable.
We come back to Frances every couple years and always wonder why we wait so long in between. So lucky to have this place in our city. Truly wonderful food, great setting, superb staff. And the couple next to us spent the dinner going through a slow breakup. They still finished their food.
Frances was a perfect dining experience. Our waiter, Jerry, was engaging and knowledgeable. We ordered our food and he suggested some wine pairings that were perfect. Everything was great but there was this cauliflower dish with grapes, apples and a light blue cheese that was the best veggie dish I have ever had. Our desert, the crispy apple cake, made our eyes roll back in our heads. Then when I saw our bill, which was under $150 (for 2 with several glasses of wine), I just couldn’t believe how reasonable it was. My new favorite restaurant in The City!
To be brief, the food is good but pricey and I feel there is lots of competition out there for $34 an entree. It is the ambiance that suffers. It is shoulder to shoulder with other guests and not cozy and comfortable. We hit it on a cold night when the interior was also cold, and we were told the restaurant had no heat or AC! I can understand no AC, but no heat?? They did begrudgingly close the one window open which was over our table, which made our server annoyed at us. Another very sweet server (Jerry) saved the day, but we shouldn’t feel like we have leprosy because we don’t want to freeze while trying to enjoy our meal.
The food was not enough reason to return 🙁
All the staff exhibited a professional, warm and friendly attitude and made our dinner very special. The flavors of the food preparation melded perfectly and every dish we ordered was so delicious. I wish they would open a charming restaurant like this in San Diego! My daughter was unable to attend the dinner but they graciously packaged a dinner to go for her to enjoy later. I was too full to eat dessert but my husband said that the Lumberjack cake was exceptional. Thanks to everyone at Frances for making our 28th wedding anniversary a special one!
Lovely dinner. My wife had the beignets and seared red snapper. I had the gem salad, marinated octopus and duck confit. Each dish was delicious. I don't t think I've had octopus more perfectly cooked, beautifully tender. Every course was obviously well thought out combinations of textures and flavors.
The service was excellent and the wine list while small provides a nice selection with half bottles ideal pairing with different courses. The chardonnay and tempranillo paired well with our dinner.
Frances is a cozy and intimate space. The staff was very nice and attentive but not overbearing. We started with the bacon beignets with creme fraiche and they were wonderful. Savory , especially with the creme fraiche. I had the king salmon with corn succotash (I think) and the pairing was great. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sweetness of the corn really complimented the richness of the fish. My friend had the bavette steak and it was also cooked perfectly and had such a meaty flavor. We also had the creamy polenta which was very good too. We finished with the lumberjack cake and it was amazing. Moist and tender in the center but the crust and top were almost crunchy. The contrasting textures were delightful. It came with I think fig ice cream which was also nice but the cake was so good it did not need any accompaniment. I would love to explore more of Frances's menu in the future.
Wonderful food even though it took years to get a reservation before 10pm. Keep trying - worth the effort. We did find the food on the salty side - a surprise at this level of preparation. The chef might want to try and step it back and not sprinkle more salt as it leaves the kitchen.
We are so glad we were able to dine at Frances, the whole experience was wonderful from start to finish. We had a 9:15pm reservation - but showed up at 8:45pm and they were able to seat us, which was great because we were starving. Our waiter was so skilled and attentive and made the experience truly lovely. It's a cozy and warm atmosphere in Frances and it's clear that attention is paid to every detail. We shared the chickpea frites, the Hamachi, a papardelle pasta with shaved squash and the side of cauliflower. It was all excellent. The apple crisp for dessert was sublime and we highly recommend it - the cinnamon ice cream makes it. We left full and happy and will definitely return. Only criticism is the wine by the ounce. They bring it out in a beaker of 8 oz, no matter how many you order and you pour what you want. It's a cute concept, but I really wasn't up for more than a glass and it felt awkward. That said, the house red is amazing. At the end of the evening we hugged our waiter goodbye - that's how great of an evening we had.
We've been to Frances a bunch of times and have always been blown away. So we decided to finally book a reservation instead of just sitting at the open seating. Unfortunately the food was sub par, the tables have a lot of commotion with waiters and patrons walking by, and the menu was limited. Service was good. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. We'll be back, but only when they're fall/winter menu starts. Call ahead to make sure their menu matches your pallet.
