We love Frances -always have and always will! Delicious food, great service, and a casual vibe. Thank you for a wonderful evening!
Excellent service and food...a very reasonably priced tasting menu with very adequate servings. House wine, which was great, available by the ounce...a nice touch.
Wonderful service and food... just a bit too noisy. Overall, I’d return as it was great value and delish!
I hesitate to write an unfavorable review of a restaurant that I have consistently loved, but the food we had was not very good. Perhaps we made poor choices. For $200, it was poor value. We drank the house wine and didn't order a main or desert - two starters, three appetizers and one salad.
I will look forward to coming back, and it is as good as it has been on other occasions will write a more glowing review.
Food as always was outstanding. Engaged server who made it fun. On the noisier side, however you can still have a good conversation.
Fortunately, I have a few opportunities to dine at Frances a few times. It is a small restaurant so fetching a table is not that easy. I keep on going back because of the friendly staff and delicious food, particularly Gerald. He is the star of the restaurant. He is friendly and know the food. Frances does not have liquor license so only wine and beer are available.
This past Sunday, we started with grilled octopus with sunchoke puree. The puree is excellent. The octopus was perfectly charred but slightly overcooked. It is on the tough side. It is particularly disappointed from this octopus after tasting the best grilled octopus at Praire a week ago.
Fortunately, the exceptional sunchoke soup save the night. The crunchy pickled onions or shallots in the soup brought the brightness to the soup. The oysters were fresh and delicious.
For our entrees, we had the bavette steak and snapper. The snapper was excellent. The steak was just ok because the cut of the meat does not have much favor. Sometimes, the restaurant should bite the bullet and put a higher price tag for the pristine meat rather than putting a piece of meat which ewwh!
We were full but managed to order a dessert to share. The brioche pudding was the least favorite of the night. The pudding was too dense and did not carry much favors. Anyhow, we had a nice evening.
We had an incredible meal and at $65 for a ~10 course tasting menu...what a steal!
We went to Frances for my birthday. Our waiter, Jerry, was extremely attentive and helpful. He gave a detailed overview of the tasting menu and was very friendly. The staff also made sure our waters were never empty, we always had wine, and cleared our plates in between major courses.
This will sound surprising, but it's a testament to how good it was: the kale and fennel salad was the single best dish we had that night. Everything was great, but wow that salad. The other highlights were the snapper and the lumberjack cake. My partner and I disagreed on the beignets--she loved them and I thought they lacked flavor. The steak was good, but not great.
That said, they change the menu very often. We've been here before and will definitely be returning in the future.
Wife’s birthday. Pleasurable experience. Would recommend to others.
Great service. Delicious food. We had the tasting menu, champagne to start —after all, we were celebrating two birthdays. The oyster starter was best oyster EVER! The little skillet of squash purée was probably my favorite!
It is noisy 😞
Frances is perfect every single time. It’s my go-to for special occasions or a random Tuesday alike! Don’t miss the chickpea fritters, you’ll probably want two orders!
Puzzling. It would have been a perfectly nice quail, were it not stuffed with crudest of pork sausages. The dish was called stuffed quail, though it would be more appropriate to call it wrapped sausage.
The octopus and duck pappardelle were nice, but nothing to write home about.
We love Octavia, and gave Frances a try for the sake of its lineage. The whole affair felt just basic, at fairly steep prices too.
The octopus appetizer was outstanding but the side of greens was over salted and inedible (they took it off our check to Frances’ credit) and the stuffed quail looked more like an oversized and over stuffed sausage. It looked repulsive and had the flavor meant for a hearty meat dish rather than a delicate bird. We will not be returning. This said their sister restaurant Octavia is outstanding! Perhaps it was a bad night for the chef.
Frances is a home away from home..
we were there for NYE the portion was very small
NYE dinner that was just excellent. We've been to Frances many times and we're sure what to expect for the always over done NYE dinner. A very enjoyable evening, a very enjoyable dining experience.
Had the NYE prix fixe menu. It was honestly one of the better meals I’ve had in San Francisco. The dishes were well thought out and the service was very friendly. The house wine by the ounce program was fun, reminded me of the new brew restaurants that charge per ounce of beer. Highly recommend.
Our first visit to Frances was early on New Year's Eve. The restaurant was already filling up at 5:30, and Jerry, our big friendly waiter, got us seated with menus quickly. The menu for New Year's was prix fixe, and to my delight, each of us was going to get a small dish of everything on the menu. (Plus a couple of options, like baked oysters and shaved truffles.) This is my favorite way to eat: small servings of beautifully prepared, ultra-flavorful cuisine. I can't wait to go back to try the regular menu.
Fantastic Food! Great Service! Only thing would be the tables are a bit too close each others.
Delicious food and attentive service, as usual! This is our go-to place for special occasions. We've introduced foodie friends to Frances, and they've been unanimously pleased.
We did the tasting menu. There was not one dish that was not magnificent, even the little home made cocktail to start with. Service was excellent. Highly recommended.
We always have an amazing meal and experience at Frances. The food is perfect and they always find a way to accommodate my gluten free needs, the setting is nice but in a casual way, not pretentious at all, and the servers are phenomenal. They know the food and their customers well.
Beautiful minimalist setting, excellent food and friendly staff was the perfect mix for a birthday dinner.
Love Frances - amazing food, incredible service. A lovely room. Plus a terrific menu. Also the beignets. One of my very favorite restaurants. Always a winner and a very relaxing evening.
Our group had three people and we opted for the tasting menu. The menu consisted of oysters, bacon beignets, chickpea fritters, kale and fennel salad, duck pappardelle, steak, snapper, and lumberjack cake. The restaurant normally doesn't do substitutions on the tasting menu, but our waitress got one of the bacon beignets switched to an extra chickpea fritter for me, which I really appreciated. Every dish I tried (so all of the above except the beignets and the steak) was excellent, and the rest of the group agreed (they ate all the dishes). The house bread with butter was also great; we got two rounds. It was one of our birthdays and the restaurant made an extra, off-the-menu dessert with a candle to celebrate. We had a wonderful time and will be back again. One downside to note was we showed up right on time for our reservation, but our table wasn't free yet. We ended up getting seated about 15 minutes after our reservation.
Food was amazing and all seasoning/marinades were delicious. Would recommend to anyone looking for a apraxia last night out!
Always a favorite
Fabulous staff and amazing food!
Went here for bf’s birthday. Fabulous service. Great food.
This is my third visit to Frances it’s slways a surprise to the palate since they take food to a different level. It was my Mothers first time and my co-diner is who introduced me to Frances.
The gentleman who waited on us 3rd time with him and I think it’s Jerry .. he’s the best and makes you laugh and want to try items that you might not consider.
We will be back after the New Year. Cheers to a great restaurant in every department front and back of the house.
This place is fabulous. Definitely save room for the Lumberjack cake.
Loved the food, service and presentation. One big drawback. if you want to be seated so close that you can see the nose hairs of other guest or hear every single word they are saying this is your place. I would not recommend this unless you want to sit right on top of other quests. It it understood that the rent is very high in San fran but sacrifice a few tables to provide a little breathing room between tables.
Great experience as usual. I got the snapper, hubby got the Bavette steak. Everything was delicious. Service is always on point and unpretentious. I wish the restaurant was not as loud, but hey, it’s a fully occupied small space on a Saturday night.
Always love going to Frances. The food is refined comfort food. Right down to the salads. They know how to bring delicious flavors to the simplest dishes.
Delicious food in a small restaurant tucked into the neighborhood. One of our favorite spots!
Food was way too salty. The salad was so salty it was inedible. The steak was chewy.
Hands down, my favorite place in town, year after year!
Wonderful food (as always). We chose the tasting menu and added the octopus appetizer, because why not? All items were excellent and we had plenty to eat. I would come to Frances for their chickpea pannise alone - a true treat.
Service was very slow and not very thoughtful. I expect better for the prices and difficulty of securing a reservation. Food was excellent.
Incredible level service by staff; the menu's variety; overall quality of food; and just the general value, they exceeded our plan evening's celebration. We have now been twice on our anniversary and every time is just "better". Excelled beyond expectations. The Servers was attentive yet allowed us time to enjoy each others' company. The menu change was noted upfront for a new offering and server recommended it as a way for us to explore the depth of their menu fully. The tasting menu of 10 small plates is the way to go if anyone reads this review...Food is top notch for this level of restaurant. Mara, our server, was incredibly sweet and joyful to assist us in our dining choices. Cheers to the staff.
Food is excellent and creative. Staff is friendly and professional. Somalier does wonders with the house wine. Love this restaurant! Mostly go for special occasions.
