My wife and I went to Frances to celebrate her birthday after discovering it on Open Table. We sat outside where tables were set up on the sidewalk and it was comfortable and somewhat quiet despite being close to Walnut St. Service was excellent - our waiter was very friendly and helpful, and my wife was even given a complimentary glass of champagne for her birthday. The menu has some Greek and Greek-influenced items; we ordered stuffed grape leaves (very good) and the grilled peach salad (excellent!) as appetizers. My wife had vegetarian moussaka and I had the pastitsio - both were very good, and the portion sizes were perfect. We were enjoying the food so much, we ordered desserts - pumpkin spiced creme brulee and baklava. We were not disappointed, as both were very good.
For drinks, we ordered cocktails. The old fashioned was smooth and nicely presented. My wife enjoyed a French 75 and a sweeter cocktail. She enjoyed both.
We would highly recommend Frances and we look forward to returning.
First time at Frances. Was a good experience in these COVID times!
We were seated immediately, outside on a gorgeous night. The waiter was very attentive to all tables. And we had a difficult time deciding on which small plates and entrees to order - everything sounded great and looked amazing as they were delivered to surrounding tables.
Our meals were all excellent. We even ordered deserts - lavender creme Brûlée and baklava. Both were outstanding! We all agreed this is a place to bring out-of-town guests to. A wonderful example of why Pittsburgh is a foodie town!
Service, food, drinks and ambience were all amazing.
Well designed restaurant, delicious family crafted food, exceptional service! We even may go back again before we leave Pittsburgh for Atlanta!
Great food, service and ambiance.
I made reservation for a group of three to have dinner following a business meeting. Literally everything about Frances exceeded our expectations and I am so glad that we found this little gem of a restaurant!
First, the decor is such an elegant vibe! From the whitewashed brick walls, to the lighting, to the dishware and cocktail glasses. Every detail is so perfectly put together.
Second, we ordered three appetizers, three entrees, and various cocktails. Each item was beyond expectations, from the plating and appearance of the dish to the overall flavor and eating experience! We tried the mussels, steam buns, wedge salad, filet, salmon, and rangs & beef! We all agreed that every dish was so good.
Finally, our server was excellent, attentive, knowledgeable, just the right amount of conversational. Perfect service.
Overall, we can not wait to return. This is our new spot! Do not hesitate to indulge in the Frances experience. You will be glad that you did!
Given we are in the middle of COVID it’s difficult to review some aspects of service. But they appeared to be very diligent in social distancing and cleaning measures.
Ambiance was pleasant and comfortable. Service was fair, at best. I want to believe it was due to Covid related adjustments, but since this was our first time here I can’t say that with confidence. Despite the poor service, the food was delicious and high quality. Made up for the shortcomings of the service to keep a positive score. We will try this place again and hope the experience improves.
Quaint local joint with a modern twist, always delicious food and fantastic staff. Outside dining options available.
Best old fashioned I've had, my fiance even liked it and he doesn't like whiskey! Food was out of this world, definitely will return!
A charming, cozy restaurant in Shadyside with great food and service all around. Can't wait to go back!!
Great food and outstanding service! Outdoor seating is great.
Very quiet and charming for enjoying a lovely meal and drinks.
8/8/20 Boyd&Blair vodka Gimlets to start at our outdoor-sidewalk table. Mussels in green curry sauce with pineapple (surprisingly good) was delicious and we asked for more bread to sop up the sauce. Crab cake on quinoa mixed with veggies was tasty. Finished by sharing a pistachio eclair. Yum.
Filet and crab cake were cooked perfectly! Got the creampuff for dessert which was delicious. Definitely coming back!
Fantastic neighborhood gem!
What a wonderful gem in Shadyside! This restaurant has great outdoor seating that is out of the sun. A perfect spot for dining. The food was outstanding and the service was exemplary!!
We loved this small and unassuming eatery. The menu is creative, the food excellent, friendly service and Frankie, the owner was a sweetheart. You can also go upstairs to the bar above the restaurant which provides more bar food and is also run by Frankie.
Service was excellent and did a great job with social distancing requirements in today's environment. Very private and wonderful setting to enjoy a very good meal and relaxing time.
Small portion of average food for an inflated cost
Perfectly lovely evening at this charming restaurant! Delicious salmon special and impeccable service!
My wife and I dined there last weekend. The place is very quaint and beautifully decorated. My wife enjoyed her meal tremendously. She had the Surf and Turf. I am a vegetarian and I saw one vegetarian meal on the menu (although that contained chicken broth, so there was real no vegetarian option at all.) Then I was told the pasta maker was down so that dish was not available. I asked if I could substitute rice instead of pasta and I was told they had no rice. There were two other rice dishes on the menu and I asked about that and she said that she could substitute the rice for the pasta that they supposedly didn't have. Being completely confused, I ordered the duck entree without the duck and substituted mushrooms instead. It was tasty but I would suggest at least one vegetarian option on the menu.
The food was excellent and the service was great! I enjoyed my chicken and my wife really liked her cauliflower steak.
The ambiance was romantic and the food was good. The cornbread appetizer was outstanding. The cauliflower steak and octopus were a little bland but not bad. Service was attentive. Cocktail was good.
Frances is a hidden jem!
Interesting place. For me to go back, I’d need to see some significant improvements on:
Greeting tables and getting drinks much sooner
Dramatic decrease in time waiting for food
Improvement on the food quality (meatballs were extremely dry, the hard boiled eggs were bland, and the quality lamb was average)
The staff were nice enough once you got their attention.
The noise inside was deafening, but I don’t think there’s much that can be done for that.
Great food and service. We will be back.
Great meal. I was sorry to hear they recently lost the chef, you would not have known as the food was excellent. The service started off slow...we sat for 20 minutes before anyone approached our table, even with just water. But after we got started it was fine.
Francis was quaint and enjoyable. A nice atmosphere. The food was very salty.
Very enjoyable meal! Had drinks at the bar first, then moved to a table. Food was excellent. Service outstanding. Glad Shadyside (Walnut St.) has another classy restaurant.
The food and service was excellent. Our table, a group of 7 was exceptional pleased with everything from the appetizers thru the main entree and several bottles of wine. Our food selections were diverse and each of us bragged about our enjoyment. I highly recommend that you visit Frances, you won’t be disappointed.
Always interesting dishes prepared masterfully. The ambiance is old world cozy - simply perfect for either a quiet night out or small gathering. Great wine and spirit selection; excellent service! My fav Pittsburgh restaurant!
The intimate, pleasant dining area has bistro charm. The wait staff is helpful and friendly. Each item on the menu is carefully prepared and presented. Very nice vibe.
This is a wonderful place to enjoy amazing food in a quaint atmosphere! I’m so happy that we have a great addition to fine dining in Shadyside.
I was excited to try a new restaurant for the two of us on NYE. We weren’t looking for a party and didn’t want an exceedingly high priced menu. We were seated quickly, and were offered drink selections from a fully equipped bar. Although the restaurant appeared to be short-staffed (I only counted 4 people out front), their performance was like a fine-tuned quartet. All the other patrons seemed to be enjoying themselves too.
My Negroni was manicured perfectly to my specifications and my wife’s Cabernet choice was very good. We shared the spicy lamb meatballs which were indeed spicy - perfectly spicy - and delicious. Our Ghost Pumpkin salads were very creative and tasty. I ordered rainbow trout, one of my favorite staples, and it came boned and tasted as good as I had hoped. I was jealous to see that my wife ordered the grilled octopus, but she let me enjoy a few bites. It was a very generous serving and was seared to perfection. We passed on dessert, and went home to see 2020’s ball drop.
Before leaving, we took a peak at Frank’s bar upstairs. A larger than expected sports bar sets above the restaurant, and we were greeted by their bartender who may have been disappointed that we didn’t stay, but one couldn’t tell. Festivities were picking up. We were absolutely surprised and delighted to see a Chiodo’s Tavern sign over the bar. This was the place for everyone when we were in our 20s. The owners got engaged there and were lucky enough to have the sign waiting in their garage for this place. We left with wide smiles.
Struck gold with our dinner. Fantastic wine, fantastic appetizer (lamb meatballs), fantastic entrees (octopus and steak), and fantastic desert. (chocolate cake)
Great food from this new restaurant, but there are still some definite kinks that need to be worked out with the service. We had dinner on a Saturday night for six people, with only two or three other tables in the restaurant. It still took 30 minutes to get drinks, another 45-60 for dinner. Hopefully they work out these issues because the food is great.
The carrot salad and strip steak were delicious. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because they served my steak medium and I’d requested medium rare. I plan to return.
We enjoyed the room, the people, and the food was very good. Couple of small things we considered possible change. The prices for drinks and a few of their dishes were high. Single Malt is a luxury but the price was steep. And, a tad less salt in the preparations would have made the food even better than very good. For sure will return though. The options are excellent, the space is romantic and comfortable, and the people very very nice.
Lovely Ambiance! Great wait staff and delicious food!
