Beautiful little restaurant with a well thought out menu. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening!
Loved this restaurant. It has a wonderful atmosphere with candle light and a warm vibe. The food is delicious and exactly as described...Sunday dinner! Very friendly staff
Do not miss this little gem of a place!
This is a gem of a restaurant. The food is well-prepared and comforting. The Rags and Beef is the best stroganoff I've ever had. It is a perfect combination of atmosphere, service and food. My favorite place to bring out-of-town guests. I never felt rushed.
Great atmosphere, great food. Wonderful place for a romantic dinner or a get together with friends and family. Following all COVID guidelines, felt very safe.
Wonderful!! Absolutely wonderful!! Food was beyond what we expected! Everyone was friendly! The restaurant was beautiful! Worth every dime!
Dined with an out of town friend. The Old Fashioned was spot-on. We started by sharing the Wedge Salad and Bruschetta -- each with a unique twist to make it outstanding. Pastitsio was fantastic as were the steam buns. Was a bit noisier than we expected from the reviews, but still easy to converse. The service was excellent, making us feel relaxed and un-rushed, attentive while never interrupting our conversation.
Located in a quiet side street off Walnut, this charming intimate restaurant had an interesting menu with a mix of comfort food (a delicious, enormous meatloaf with mashed potatoes) and Mediterranean (pastitzio, moussaka). The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the bartender made an excellent old fashioned with a walnut/cinnamon twist. We finished up sharing a creamy slice of pumpkin pie. The room is well lit and cozy; due to covid it was not full (but there were tables outside with heaters for those willing to brave the cold). A highly recommendable choice for a nice dinner out!
The food is delicious and the place is beautiful.
Wonderful as always. Great service, fantastic and interesting food. Nice outdoor tables. Love this restaurant every time we go!
Nice, relaxed atmosphere. The food was excellent. The cocktails were creative and delicious. We'll be back again for the dinner menu for sure!!!
Amazing drinks and delicious brunch with my husband and sister!
We went to Frances for my husband’s birthday. I picked it because they took reservations, had an interesting cocktail menu, and had a selection of food that would appeal to my gourmet-loving husband as well as my picky teen and tween. The cocktails were excellent, and the food/service were outstanding. We will definitely be back!
Delicious food and excellent service.
The drink menu is incredibly fresh with little twists and improvements all the time. And the small plates and entrees never disappoint. Delicate preparations and presentation. This is one of my favorite restaurants for an intimate dinner or night out with a small group of friends.
Very cute place. Food was great. Service was great. Go try it out!
Loved that they are open for lunch now. And that the animal style burger from Frank’s bar and grill is on the menu. Great cocktails, poached pear salad delicious, folks had crab cake Benedict that was excellent.
Always a delicious meal, great cocktails, wonderful service and beautiful ambience.
The food and service were amazing! The attention to detail with each dish is amazing. The vibe is great, it’s such a cute little spot in shadyside!
Sat outside- nice heater. Good drinks and food. Loved the meatloaf. Will go back
Such a cute little gem. Reminded me of a tucked-away place in SoHo NY. The ambiance was truly amazing and the staff was very friendly. The food was fairly good. Either way would still go back!
First time for all 4 of us and it was a really great experience. Food was wonderful, the drinks were great and everything was priced perfectly. We will definitely be back.
We had a very lovely dining experience here. We were traveling on business in Pittsburgh and looking for a great meal and one that we could enjoy outside. This fit the bill! Our waitress was really efficient and gave us the perfect amount of privacy as well. The specialty cocktails were very good as well as the food. It’s in a nice neighborhood as well. Parking is a bit more of a challenge but we managed just fine. (I’d give myself a few extra minutes to find parking). I appreciated the Covid protocols.
Overall, we really enjoyed ourselves! The food was great, and the service was good, but we did feel a bit rushed.
Service was fabulous. The restaurant is charming and beautifully decorated. Everyone enjoyed our meals. The brie mac & cheese was particularly memorable.
The food quality was mediocre though the service was nice, friendly and on time. Wine selection was low quality and very limited. Overall not worth it.
One of our favorites. We often take guests who are very pleased with this friendly place with great food
We went to Frances for our 30th wedding anniversary. We love everything about Frances. It’s quaint eclectic atmosphere is both inviting and romantic.
The food is excellent . We had the shrimp steam buns for an appetizer.
They are crunchy, a little spicy, warm and delicious. Our filets were cooked to perfection . The demi glaze was just perfect . The garlic smashed potatoes were perfectly seasoned . The asparagus was crisp , yet tender.
The service was outstanding. We felt special and that the staff was glad we were there. You can tell they all love what they do. We definitely will be returning .
Food was amazing. The waiter was fantastic.
We had a great time at Frances on Saturday night for our anniversary! The food was phenomenal and the service was even better! Would highly recommend it and want to bring more people back with us the next time we go.
We asked if we could eat inside because it was going to be cooler than expected. They were very accommodating. The food was fantastic. The service was exceptional and we will definitely go back. Very nice people work there.
My wife and I went to Frances to celebrate her birthday after discovering it on Open Table. We sat outside where tables were set up on the sidewalk and it was comfortable and somewhat quiet despite being close to Walnut St. Service was excellent - our waiter was very friendly and helpful, and my wife was even given a complimentary glass of champagne for her birthday. The menu has some Greek and Greek-influenced items; we ordered stuffed grape leaves (very good) and the grilled peach salad (excellent!) as appetizers. My wife had vegetarian moussaka and I had the pastitsio - both were very good, and the portion sizes were perfect. We were enjoying the food so much, we ordered desserts - pumpkin spiced creme brulee and baklava. We were not disappointed, as both were very good.
For drinks, we ordered cocktails. The old fashioned was smooth and nicely presented. My wife enjoyed a French 75 and a sweeter cocktail. She enjoyed both.
We would highly recommend Frances and we look forward to returning.
First time at Frances. Was a good experience in these COVID times!
We were seated immediately, outside on a gorgeous night. The waiter was very attentive to all tables. And we had a difficult time deciding on which small plates and entrees to order - everything sounded great and looked amazing as they were delivered to surrounding tables.
Our meals were all excellent. We even ordered deserts - lavender creme Brûlée and baklava. Both were outstanding! We all agreed this is a place to bring out-of-town guests to. A wonderful example of why Pittsburgh is a foodie town!
Service, food, drinks and ambience were all amazing.
Well designed restaurant, delicious family crafted food, exceptional service! We even may go back again before we leave Pittsburgh for Atlanta!
Great food, service and ambiance.
I made reservation for a group of three to have dinner following a business meeting. Literally everything about Frances exceeded our expectations and I am so glad that we found this little gem of a restaurant!
First, the decor is such an elegant vibe! From the whitewashed brick walls, to the lighting, to the dishware and cocktail glasses. Every detail is so perfectly put together.
Second, we ordered three appetizers, three entrees, and various cocktails. Each item was beyond expectations, from the plating and appearance of the dish to the overall flavor and eating experience! We tried the mussels, steam buns, wedge salad, filet, salmon, and rangs & beef! We all agreed that every dish was so good.
Finally, our server was excellent, attentive, knowledgeable, just the right amount of conversational. Perfect service.
Overall, we can not wait to return. This is our new spot! Do not hesitate to indulge in the Frances experience. You will be glad that you did!
Given we are in the middle of COVID it’s difficult to review some aspects of service. But they appeared to be very diligent in social distancing and cleaning measures.
Ambiance was pleasant and comfortable. Service was fair, at best. I want to believe it was due to Covid related adjustments, but since this was our first time here I can’t say that with confidence. Despite the poor service, the food was delicious and high quality. Made up for the shortcomings of the service to keep a positive score. We will try this place again and hope the experience improves.
Quaint local joint with a modern twist, always delicious food and fantastic staff. Outside dining options available.
Best old fashioned I've had, my fiance even liked it and he doesn't like whiskey! Food was out of this world, definitely will return!
