Founding Farmers - Reston
As a farmer-owned restaurant, almost all of our delicious food and drink – from our freshly baked bread and house-churned butter to our craft cocktails with our proprietary spirits – is made from scratch, using high-quality ingredients from American family farms.
Our First Bake is available weekday mornings for takeaway breakfast and our specialty blend of Compass Coffee. We hope our Reston guests will enjoy all that is Founding Farmers.
Although our waiter was very pleasant, he spent 10 minutes telling his life story to the people at a table near ours while we waited to place our order. That got the evening off to a bad start. I ordered an iced tea, and it came with more ice than tea. I also ordered the prime rib sandwich. The meat was great, but the dipping sauce for it was greasy and somewhat gelatinous. It tasted more like a bad gravy than a good au jus. My dining companion got the grilled cheese and tomato soup. They were OK. We've eaten at this location several times, and just about every time it misses the mark. Either the service is off and/or the food isn't up to snuff. It's not particularly healthy food (e.g., a glazed doughnut with fried chicken), and not interesting enough to make it worth indulging in the extra calories.
I ordered from the menu-the chicken dinner. The chicken was perfect but the mashed potatoes were room temp and the collard greens were cold. The rest of the food was fine. Our server did not keep up with coffee refills and we asked for gravy which never came and did not see our server for a long time. Eventually we chased her down to pay our bill. We eat here often but this experience was unusually poor.
The food was great and so was the service.
We've eaten at other Founding Farmers a number of times in the past, the food off the menu is always fantastic. On this occasion it was a Sunday afternoon and we didn't realize when we had made our reservation that it would be a fixed-price brunch option.
My wife has a severe soy allergy and was unable to eat much of what was available for brunch but since we had come with friends and had already sat down we decided to stay and eat. Some of the items on the brunch menu were good, others were of the quality I'd expect at a standard hotel. We wouldn't come back for the brunch ever again, especially since we were told that all the fried foods were in soy oil and much of what was from the grill also was cooked in soy oil. We appreciated our waiter for checking with the kitchen beforehand, but with soy being one of the 8 most common allergens, I'm surprised they wouldn't use another common alternative like canola, sunflower, safflower or other oils.
I always overeat when I come to Founding Farmers in Reston. It's not just that their brunch has all of my favorite foods plus several I hadn't thought of. It is partly the feeling of comfort and celebration that they convey in their service and menu and then everything is just so delicious.
Overall ok, but forgot to bring the appetizers until dinner was delivered. Food came out very quickly, which was surprising and almost like it was prepared ahead and then just heated. Waiter made up for the mediocrity of the food. Everyone was apologetic and I appreciated that.
Drinks are very slow to arrive. Also they have valet but don’t pay for it yet pay for garage parking. Don’t get it.
Wonderful all the way around
Serves like we had yesterday are the ones responsible for not returning again
They are only worried about how much tip they will get instead of focusing on service
I was in for a business lunch on Tuesday 11/12 with three of my coworkers. It's a tradition on my team that we take every new hire out to lunch within their first week to founding farmers. My team loves the food, enjoys the convenience of the location, and the food portions. However, on Tuesday the service was very 'fair' and all of our lunches came out barley lukewarm. In the essence of time we decided not to say anything because we didn't have time for our food to be remade. Even two of our lattes were room temperature. Other than that, the food was good and the lunch went well-would've liked to have warmer meals and coffee along with a more engaging server.
The scallops were phenomenal!
Hi SherriP: Thank you so much! We really appreciate your shout out for the Scallops and also your 5-STAR rating! :D We hope to have you back soon and please call us: 703-988-7333 for any reservation help needed. -Amy
Thanks for being nice to me on Veteran's Day! I will be back! Shrimp Pesto thing was AWESOME.
Wow this was one of the more disappointing places I have ever been to I hear so much and the ratings were great for this Place the chicken was so dry the salad was so bland I have never eaten anything so terrible
Hi ReviewReal: Oh wow. I am super sorry your experience with us was considered a major disappointment. :( I would love the chance to touch base about the dry chicken & bland salad that let you down, and hopefully turn your lasting impression around! That said, I will send you a PM with my contact info. -Amy
I made reservations here because I had heard that the Founding Farmer's family of locations was doing a special for veterans on Veteran's Day. In particular, I was interested in the brunch buffet that is normally $32. While researching the various locations, it wasn't readily apparent if all locations served the brunch or just select locations. In the absence of that information, I just went ahead and made reservations at the Reston location, and then I made a phone call to the restaurant to confirm they were doing brunch. Now, I failed to specifically say "brunch buffet", but I did ask if they were doing the $32 brunch and if they were doing the 50% off for Veteran's Day. I was told they were. I was stoked! My wife and I like the Georgetown location, so it was going to be fun to try another one.
However, that's where the fun ended. When we showed up it was obvious that there was no brunch buffet. I was super disappointed because it was the only reason I made reservations here. If I had known, I would have gone to the D.C. location or Tyson's location (apparently the only two with brunch buffets).
We decided to stay because the other locations couldn't get us in for another three hours and we were hungry. The food was all great! I really enjoyed my scramble, and my wife seemed to enjoy her breakfast burrito.
The "50% off" Veteran's Day special was... murky. I did order a bloody mary, which I understand was not included in the special, but I'm confused how even with that on the bill we got $19.50 off and paid $43.00 (before tip). If you consider the bloody cost $12 (I think it was closer to $10, but whatever), there's no math that gets me to $19.50, unless there were other items (coffee, the cinnamon buns, etc.) that were also not covered by the discount. I would have appreciated to know that ahead of time.
Also, once we ordered a side of bacon to go (don't ask), and it took over 30 minutes. No idea what was going on... 30+ minutes.
Hi Kurt: Thank you for your review and I am real sorry for the multiple mishaps that took place with your planned visit to our Reston Station FF on Veteran's Day. I would love the chance to look into the charges you described as wrong, and also make right the long wait for the bacon you took home & wrong info shared. That said, I will send you a DM with my email address. -Amy
It was nice! Our waitress Jordan was very attentive and efficient. Our food arrived in a timely manner and it was delicious!
The price is high for the food quality. Many foods items meant to be served hot were cold or lukewarm. It was noisy the entire time. Likely will not go back for the brunch.
Visited this location the met with a long time friend. The ambiance was perfect to chat and catch up. We didn’t feel rush. The staff was very kind and helpful. The brunch buffet was very good, it had variety and everything was fresh. Will definitely go back to this location.
Such amazing potential, just something was off that evening. 3rd strike for us personally for this particular location. David stood out for us and was extremely attentive as he seem to be overseeing our section. Food lacked taste and flare you expect. Service timing was off.
Hi LouisS: I am so sorry your 3rd visit with us ended on a low note, with something seeming "off" with the flavors of the food & timing of service. That said, I would love the chance to follow up to learn more about the dishes ordered and overall inconsistencies you encountered. I will be sending you a DM with my contact info to hopefully connect further and make right the disappointments from this experience. -Amy
First visit to Founding Farmers and we were pleased with the quality of the food and the service. Looking forward to our next visit. Reservations recommended.
Saturday breakfast did not disappoint. Just wish they had specials on brunch drinks. Get the mini donuts!
For a farm to table restaurant they are very limited in accommodating allergies. A member of our party of 6 had a allergy to garlic. We were not able to get a vegetable (not starch) without garlic. The succotash had garlic powder and couldn’t be removed. No offer to accommodate other than have potatoes or a salad. Have enjoyed this restaurant greatly in the past and has been a go to for unique dining for visiting friends and family. It’s a shame they were not accommodating.
I've been to the DC, MD and Tyson's FF locations and thoroughly enjoyed my food and dining experiences--this was a different story. I made online reservations for two at lunch on 11/8 at 12:30pm. When we got there we were a few minutes early, the place was at half empty and no one was in line. Maybe that was a sign, not busy on a Friday at lunch?
We checked in with the host and I asked to have my parking ticket validated. He said that I would have to wait until after our lunch, (how odd, did they think we'd get our parking validated and skip out)? Certainly, not very customer-service oriented. Then we were seated at a round booth suitable for 6-8 people, we both questioned the staff person as it was just the two of us and she said it was fine. The booth was so large, to hear each other talk we both had to scoot all the way into the back of the booth. Again, it seemed odd, as so many smaller tables were available.
My friend and I both ordered the grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup combo (great for a freezing cold day). Unfortunately, the sandwiches and the fries were served lukewarm, they must have been made ahead of time and sat under a warming light making the fries limp and the sandwiches dried out. Not only were the sandwiches not hot, they were dull and tasteless. They were made on thin white bread, with a thin layer of tasteless, white cheese, and were barely toasted with virtually no butter on the bread. We had visions of crispy artisan bread with hot, oozing, delicious cheese--not even close! Our waitress got busy and never checked back with us about our meals and no one else asked us or we would have let the know.
In addition, our booth sat against the outside window and the entire time we were seated cold air came up from the floor and behind us. Finally, on our way out we forgot to ask for parking validation and had to pay the $5 to park! Overall, an extremely disappointing dining experience for a Founding Farmers restaurant.
Management staff were extremely accommodating. They made our anniversary very special. Thank you!!
Excellent ambiance and decor. Great vegetarian options and wonderful service. Perfect restaurant for a casual luncheon with friends
With two little ones that are going to play and have a good time we were seated in just the right place. The staff was good and the food great.
Nice casual dining location that was moderately priced and kid-friendly. The menu has enough variety to keep even picky eaters happy.
We love the Founding Farmers at Tysons. Reston had some issues. Even though we had reservations for six, we had to wait fifteen minutes and they tried to cram us in a booth with two chairs on the end which was very tight and not practical for six adults. We decided to leave rather than try to eat a buffet brunch squeezed in the booth. A manager saw we were leaving and miraculously there was a large booth that fit six adults open. No idea why they didn’t give it to us to start with.
The buffet at Reston was different that Tysons. My vegan daughter did not find anything to eat. They did let her order off the menu, though it was Sunday.
The server was nice, but not well trained. He told us they didn’t serve decaf coffee (the manager brought us decaf) and only brought four water glasses for six people. Had to ask and wait for spoons for the ice cream.
Reston needs some fine tuning and they need to have something healthy on the buffet. Too much salt and oil - even on the salads and vegetables.
Hi vadiner14: Thank you for your review for your brunch visit at our Reston Station Founding Farmers. I am real sorry for the disappointments with this experience- the insufficient initial accommodation, lacking service & limited buffet options, and I would love to hopefully turn around the poor impression you left with. I will send you a DM with my contact info to connect further. -Amy
Service was at best average.
Let me start by saying our server, Elizabeth, was wonderful and my review in no way reflects upon her.
That said, we will likely never return. Prices are high and the food wasn't worth the price. The french fries that came with our meals were obviously sitting for hours and rewarmed. They were limp and barely warm - fries should be hot and crunchy! Vegies that came with a meal were tasteless. Overall we were not impressed with the food this time.
Hi GingerG: Thank you for sharing your review with us, and 1000% you are totally right! FF should be served hot & crunchy, and side vegetables should be packed with flavor. This said, I would love the chance to follow up and make right the disappointing preparation of your side items this time. I will send you a PM with my email address to hopefully continue this conversation. -Amy
Fun atmosphere and good food. Unfortunately we did not have good service. The restaurant was pretty busy but they just didn't seem to have the appropriate staffing to accommodate. Our server seemed very attentive when we arrived but was rushed afterwards and didn't make it back to our table often. We wanted to order more drinks and ask questions but it took me about 10 minutes to flag her down to get one additional drink ordered and the rest of my party just gave up.
Food was good and we will try it again. Just hoping for better service.
Hi KWinVA: Thank you for your review and I am real sorry to read service during your visit seemed rushed and MIA at times. :( I would love the chance to touch base about your feedback, and will send you a PM with my email address. -Amy
Each time we go we are very happy with how much we like new things we try.
Hi ccbike: Aww! Thank you so much! We are real happy to know you have been happy with your visits and it will continue to make us happy to have you back for more delicious food! ;) -Amy ,
We had an enjoyable brunch on a Saturday morning before the WS Nationals parade
Good food, attentive service. Can’t really ask for much more.
We are vegetarian and there are several options on the menu. We had cauliflower hummus, cornbread and two pasta dishes. Very tasty food and the service was friendly and attentive. Both appetizers and mains came out fairly quickly. Also good wine options at reasonable prices by the bottle.
We had high hopes for this restaurant based on all the reviews. My pot roast was half fat, drowning in super salty gravy (which I had asked for on the side), and the vegetables were all different degrees of cooked (crunchy celery/mushy onions). My husband's fried chicken was soggy and bland and the brisket tough; the spare ribs were the one redeeming part of the meal. At these prices, I'd skip this place, at least for dinner.
Love this place!
This was the perfect place to enjoy a quiet family dinner. The food was absolutely scrumptious! Atmosphere was perfect. The service was lacking- but I still highly recommend this wonderful restaurant!
Sunday brunch. Seated up in the back tier. Service was spotty...sat there a while before knowing how the buffet worked, or how to get a spoon ... basic stuff like that. Nice mix of dishes but more than a few bowls were empty and not refilled while I was in the food area. Don't know that I will return for the Brunch experience but I will likely try the restaurant again on a more traditional, order-from-a-menu visit.
Hi dc4dc: Thank you for your review and I am real sorry to read that service was spotty & some of the buffet items were not refilled in a more timely manner. We appreciate you letting us know these details, and both our Management & Culinary Team will take what you shared into account to improve the overall experience we aim to provide out guests. We hope to have you back for another try and please call us: (703) 988-7333 for any reservation help needed. -Amy
Went to Sunday Brunch with my family. We were seated in a back corner on top of the pastry station which was not optimal. But, I was especially disappointed with buffet brunch options. The offerings were rather strange and not especially appetizing. Our server was slow and rude.
It's not at good as the Tyson's location for brunch. There is less food, less food options and the buffet area is set up poorly. The service staff were scarce and when present were apathetic. Won't be going back there.
