Founding Farmers - Reston
As a farmer-owned restaurant, almost all of our delicious food and drink – from our freshly baked bread and house-churned butter to our craft cocktails with our proprietary spirits – is made from scratch, using high-quality ingredients from American family farms.
Our First Bake is available weekday mornings for takeaway breakfast and our specialty blend of Compass Coffee. We hope our Reston guests will enjoy all that is Founding Farmers.
I can’t say enough about this crew. We went to the wrong place and with exhausted grandparents and children in tow, they were understanding, compassionate and accommodating though we were an hour late. The services was amazing, the homemade sodas and cocktails were perfect and the food was outstanding. We had the fried chicken and donuts, steamed cod (just delicious, ask for a little hot sauce to go in there!), the short ribs and the chicken salad. One thing was as good as the next!
Issues in the kitchen
Something is wrong in the front of kitchen or the platting process.
Many of the sides were cold while the protein was warm.
Fellow diners pasta was cold first time then undercooked when replaced and finally comp’ed and replaced with turkey to go.
The warm food was all very good. The trout was tasty, the burger was slightly under cooked but tasty and the fried chicken was also tasty.
The fried green tomatoes were underwhelming sorry to say.
The wings were very tasty!
Avoid pasta and make sure to complain, but only if needed. They were very good about trying to take care of our complaints. Staff and management was great!!
The food was amazing, paired will with craft cocktails
We were put in the back room where it seemed all of the tables with children were put. The room itself wasn’t very special, it was very hot, and there was zero ambiance or music. The food and the service were excellent, though!
We had a great dinner at Founding Farmers. The service is exceptional and the food variety & selection is excellent. I had the chicken salad sandwich and homemade chips, my wife the chicken enchiladas. Both meals were fantastic and the serving portions are very generous.
This is a great place to go for a business lunch, date night or a family dinner. One of my favorite Reston restaurants!
Loved everything about it! The food was amazing and the service was outstanding. Going back again in a couple days!
AWWWEESOME! Thank you and we look forward to your return. :) -Amy
This was a missmatch for my group. We had gone to the original FF in DC when it was about the food and distinctively good. Most of the food wasn't bad, just nothing special. Culinary heights were the shrimp and grits, cornbread, and the poke salad. They were all very good. The spicy deviled eggs were the blandest we'd ever experienced. Waiter was well meaning but distracted. Space is very big and dark and very noisy which seems to be a trend. My advice to potential diners is: Don't bother. Eat at Silver Diner and pocket the 40% you'll save on the bill.
SteveM, thank you for sharing your review with us. I am so sorry that the meal was somewhat lacking and your overall visit not up to par. We appreciate you taking the time to pinpoint these details with us and we will apply what you shared towards the improvements needed to bring this location around. We hope to have you back for another try and please call us at 703-988-7333 for any reservation help needed. -Amy
Booked a table for 8 for a slow Monday evening. Food was good. The main issue was with the drinks. Every drink took upward of 15 minutes solid. Even Old Fashioned took them more than 15 mins. Apparently one of the bar attender was off since he got his finger few days back. Founding Farmers was known for bad Service and I was hoping for a better one this time. Rest of my team was vindicated, they warned me not to go with Founding Farmers. Food was good though.
I am very sorry, SridharS to read that the service and drink delivery really missed the mark this time. :( I understand your disappointment that this happened and I would love the chance to touch base. I will send you a PM. -Amy
The server was nice and tried to be attentive but it took for ever. We were seated around 6:30 but did not get out until after 9 pm. Usually that would not be a problem but we had two kids 3 yo and under. It seemed like the kitchen was having "issues". A table behind us, who were seated after us, were served and out almost an hour before we were out. I'm not looking for fast food but it did take way too long considering we had little kids with us.
Restaurant was pretty empty since it was 4pm on a Sunday afternoon. Took a very very looonnngg
Time to get our food n drinks
Thank you, JOHNNAN for letting us know! Our Management Team reads each review for consideration into what needs to be fixed, and we will definitely look into what we can do to avoid this from happening during future Sunday afternoons. Again, we appreciate it and really-thank you for your kind patience this time! We hope for your soon return and call us at 703-988-7333. -Amy
Have heard about Founding Farmers for years but never tried it! The food was incredible! Will definitely go back!
Between the fun food choices (get the Whirly Pop Kettle Corn appetizer for the table!) and the scratch made drinks (get the passion fruit vanilla soda if it’s in season), you cannot go wrong here. There is something delicious and fresh for everyone. The service and peppy ambience are fantastic too.
The food was delicious and Derek was a fabulous waiter! We really enjoyed our experience!
Perfect as always!!
Thank you, AmyB for sharing your 5-STAR review with us! :) :) :) -Amy
Amazing venue and great food.
Very busy Friday night. Wait staff was friendly but seemed disorganized with a lot of running back and forth when it seems trips might have been consolidated. Food was decent, my husband loved the trout and who wouldn't love that fried chicken! But it all would have been much more delicious if it had been warmer.
Your restaurant is trendy and stylish with good food offered at not terrible prices. Just a little more attention to detail will really enhance this dining experience.
Restonian, thank you for sharing your review with us. I am super sorry for the disorganized service and lukewarm meals you pointed out in your feedback. Our team appreciates that you took the time to let us know & we will look into the improvements needed to better the overall quality experience we aim for based on your suggestions. That said, we are hopeful for your return & please call anytime at 703-988-7333 for reservations or anything our Management Team may assist with in the future. -Amy
Great location with easy parking. Great choices on the menus makes it easy to satisfy diverse tastes. We will be back to sample more of the good stuff & great deserts too
The food was excellent and so was Brian our waiter. We will be back!
We came to Founding Farmers because that is where my son requested to go for his 16th birthday. Our waiter was friendly and helpful - very knowledgeable about the menu items with every question we asked. The food was excellent - some stuff definitely needed some more seasoning (kind of bland). Overall, it was a very enjoyable time. Service was great. Food was really good! Great experience!
Have been to this restaurant several times, especially for brunch. It's really great, and I've given super high reviews in the past, especially for that fantastic weekend brunch (we've been several times for special occasions).
This time, the service, table, setting, everything 'around' the meal was predictably top notch. The food itself was below the standard expected and price paid. Our party (visitors from out of town) of 6 didn't say anything, but I noticed portions of their meal went uneaten. My meal was great so I was a little surprised. But pasta was tough, and came at room temp. Salads were small and slightly wilted, soaked in the dressing. When I asked our friends, a few others said the food wasn't hot, the fried chicken was dry/overcooked, and several noted way too salty.
Hope this is helpful, and also noting that we probably should have said something at the time, rather than write a review. But, FF has rec'd so many accolades over the years, hope they can revive that reputation, and that our experience with the quality of the food that evening was just an aberration.
We won't let this one experience dissuade us from returning though. This is a very cool restaurant, and we still recommend it.
Food was delicious but service was a little uneven. The food variety and uniqueness of the dishes is great so no complaints on the menu. I had the brisket melt and it was delicious and the rest of my party was all vegetarian and they were all very satisfied with the variety of dishes they could choose from.
Service though was a bit uneven. I made a lunch reservation for my team of 10 people. Upon arriving we waited nearly 20 minutes past our reservation time and watched several other parties get seated before us. After being seated we were presented with menus and water but were not asked if anyone wanted to order drinks. There was no bread or other little bits to nibble on while we waited as I would have expected at a higher end restaurant. The waiter came back a little while later and took our orders and it felt like a lifetime before the food arrived. Thankfully the food was delicious, though the portions a little sparse.
All in all, the food was good enough that I would give them another chance and hope the service is a little more attentive next time.
The best lobster tail we have ever had. I loved the impossible burger. And the atmosphere is fantastic. The food here is simply the best!
I love the food at Founding Farmers and the waiter was fantastic but for some reason they do not list their beers on the menu. They have a separate beer menu that you have to ask for. When I sit down I expect to have all of the menus and I don’t like having to ask for a beer menu. Either have them on the tables already or bring one with the food menu when we are seated.
My friends and I were celebrating my sisters birthday. Our waiter was just the right balance of attentive and invisible. Great suggestions, very professional. The food was delicious! Best Southern Fried Chicken ever and nice strong cocktails! Would highly recommend!!
Buffet food was sub par, spicy fried chicken had no seasoning at all, not even salt, the "french toast" were bricks of deep fried bread and the eggs benedict did not come out for 40 minutes and was inedible with sauce that had gone bad.
Oh no. I am VERY sorry, NateH to read that the buffet food was considered subpar and your overall visit was only worthy of 2-Stars. :( Our Culinary Team takes all feedback to heart and I would love the chance to connect about your feedback. I will send you a PM. -Amy
The setup was great but the food on the Saturday brunch buffet was lacking. The french toast, the donuts, the grits, and many other foods were HARD. I explained this to my server and she mentioned that many people had already complained. I'm not sure why something wasn't done. I won't be visiting this location again.
NakashaK, thank you for sharing your review with us. While we appreciate the wonderful rating, our team still feels badly that the food failed to impress this time. That said, we really do hope you'll give us another try and please call our team at (703) 988-7333 for any future reservation help needed. -Amy
It is always a joy bringing friends, family and coworkers here. I get smile in my spirit when they can't stop gushing about the impressive service, hospitality, and pure deliciousness of the food.
Excellent brunch - a family treat for us. Something for everyone. Our kids love it and so do we. We’ll be back!
This restaurant never disappoints with their food and service. The restaurant is beautiful and has a cool urban vibe about it. It’s one of our favorite places to go for good food that evokes a sense of home.
FF sets a medium bar and flops over it. The food just isn’t that memorable. It’s never BAD, it’s just okay. The noise level is almost deafening. We had the following entrees: chicken pot pie — good but not worth crowing about. Short ribs crusted in sugar and too salty. Chicken fried steak - needs a ton of gravy for flavor. Seafood stew — good but lots of mussels, few shrimp and a bit of fish. Overpriced. The one redeeming feature of FF is a decent wine list fairly priced.
Experience was not good from the beginning. The waiter approached us and told us it had been a long day and he was exhausted. Well his service reflected his exhaustion. We asked if the risotto was gluten free, he paused, clearly guessing, says no. Not something he should be guessing on. Food was bland and flavorless, I had the shrimp and grits, and other guest had scallops with risotto dish. For dessert, we had mint chip icecream, did not taste like mint chip, we asked the waiter if we had the right ice cream he said yes, we told hin it did not taste like it, he again said it was right and walked away, not offering replacement or another choice. We will not be going back.
Seated immediately upon arrival which was nice . Server had knowledge of menu but was a bit inattentive. Bar beverages, draft beer and bottle cider , were warm. Good was good , unique qualities which were some good and some not so good. Time to prepare food seemed much to long. Two ordered ice cream which they did not care for at all. Cost ( with tip) was over $50 per person , value was not there for this dinner.
I have visited each of the FF expansion restaurants and with each addition, especially this one, the quality of the food has gone done. I am now done with FF. Thanks for the original memories.
SpanningTheGlobe, I am SO sorry to read that the food during your visit at this location failed to give you that WOW factor and we have also let you down with previous visits at other locations. This said, I would love to connect about your feedback to learn more and will send you a PM. -Amy
The location is convenient, decor is beautiful, service was wonderful and the food was delicious! The portions were huge. I can’t say anything negative and we will definitely come back when we are in DC again!
Everything was wonderful!
The food was unexceptional and too expensive for its mediocre quality. The service was extremely poor. The waitress was slow and forgot to get items requested. We don’t know if it was just an exceptionally busy night, or she was an extremely poor waitress.
AnnabelleH, I am very sorry that your experience with us was far from enjoyable based on both the food & service. Our team takes all feedback to heart and I would love to learn the details of your review. That said, I will send you a PM with my contact info. -Amy
Our initial server Kevin was terrific, however he went home since we were there between lunch and dinner. The service level went down hill as his replacement was not attentive. We had to flag him to retrieve our check and then flag a manager to pay the check, as we were going to be late for our meeting since we had waited for our server to return.
ShawnJ, thank you for sharing your feedback with us. I am so sorry that service was inconsistent and had somewhat dropped in quality during the change from lunch to dinner. We appreciate you letting us know and assure you that we will apply what you shared to improving our late afternoon service. -Amy
Our server was knowledgeable on how Founding Farmers came to be and being from ND, this was an exciting visit for myself and my colleagues. Food was spot on and atmosphere was wonderful. Definitely want to try the other locations too! The manager and Rizza told us about how they toured ND last September and it’s nice to know the employees are getting the opportunity to visit ND farm land!
Thank you, RuthS! We appreciate your AWESOME 5-STAR review and kind shout out for our team! :) -Amy
Great food and great service!
The food is great but for the price I think the staff were lacking in friendliness and courtesy. It was my first time here and when I walked in both hostesses completely disregarded me a simple “Hi, we’ll be with you in a moment” would’ve worked since there wasn’t anyone else standing there. When I was seated I would’ve liked for someone to explain how brunch worked where the buffet was located or if I could order additional things from a separate menu(I did ask the host who seated us that it was our first time here and his response was vague). And lastly, it would’ve been nice if someone gave a courtesy reminder about getting the parking ticket validated by the hostess instead of paying for the garage parking.
