About Founding Farmers - Montgomery County
MoCo's Founding Farmers is owned by the more than 40,000 family farmers of the NDFU, serving American inspired real food and drink with an emphasis and focus on cooking from scratch.
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

Founding Farmers - Montgomery County Ratings and Reviews
The food is always good. This time, the service was disappointing. We received our appetizers before we received our drinks, one side item didn't come out until after the dessert menus were passed out, the time between ordering a glass of wine and the time when the glass actually showed up was well beyond an acceptable wait (i.e. >10 minutes).
This is not a normal experience for us and we will go back to the restaurant again. We were simply disappointed this time.
I have loved Founding Farmers in the past - I have eaten there about 10 times and almost always order the same things (Shrimp with Grits, Pasta with Chicken Cutlet, Goat Cheese Pasta, Chicken and Waffles). I have recommended this restaurant to many people but will not do so again after this visit.
My husband and I ordered the bread with fig, mascarpone and prosciutto at the bar. I have had this same appetizer about 8 times at Founding Farmers. The appetizer came out with no mascarpone. Granted, I know that cheese can melt into bread, but the mascarpone was nowhere to be seen or tasted. First disappointment.
I ordered something I had never had at this particular restaurant and got the braised short ribs with whipped mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts with bacon. The short ribs and the brussel sprouts were beyond being too sweet. It was as if the chef was trying to mask something by adding too much sauce and maple syrup. I could not even finish my meal. My husband and I usually order dessert and didn't because dinner had already been too sweet.
I was very disappointed in our experience at Founding Farmers. We will try someplace else next time.
Waitress had to go back to the kitchen to get answers about main dishes. 2 drinks came with club soda instead of tonic water. 1 glass of wine was $19 for a standard pour house wine?
Food was good, but pricey for what we got. Waitress seemed very inexperienced. Will not
be a place we frequent!
Really looked forward to this, but was very disappointed. Beignets were undercooked in center. I ordered the beet hash without the eggs. It was also undercooked, potatoes were limp and pallid. The waiter told us later the eggs really made the dish. A little heads up prior to ordering would have made a big difference in our experience. Manager was great and took it off bill. Husband got the Pastrami hash. It was fine, but just that! Had heard such great things about restaurants. But really no reason to go back
First glass of pinot grigio tasted like shellac - Waitress took it back and brought 2nd glass - a chardonay not much better and I was charged $13 not $10. Pot roast was very greasy and had a large chunk of fat in the middle and green beans that were not thoroughly cooked. My husband had bar-b-que that also had big chunks of pork fat and overcooked beans that were very mushy.
Overall, a big disappointment that left us not wanting to return.
After wanting to dine at Founding Farmers for a long time, we finally had the opportunity. The waiter was fun, friendly and efficient. The atmosphere was lively and the decor was fun. There was nothing "stuffy" about the experience. The food is pretty much home style comfort food, everything fresh and prepared extremely well. The salad was cold and fresh with a very nice dressing. The pork was tender and flavorful and the chicken pot pie had a puff pastry topping that just crackled with every forkful...as it should be if properly prepared. The chicken was plentiful and very tender and moist with chunks of vegetables. The cake was huge and the flavor good. We enjoyed our dinner and will return! We will also tell our friends about our experience. It was delightful!
Food was great, ambiance was great, however service was terrible! Server never introduced herself, didn’t check in to see if we needed anything else, we had to ask for our silverware, she seemed to be annoyed maybe because we had two young kids in our party or maybe that was projected behavior towards African Americans (she too was African American). She cut the check way before we asked for it as if she was ready for us to leave, never asked if we wanted dessert or anything else for that matter!
Service was pretty bad. Got a simple order wrong twice and with a mostly empty restaurant, rudely hurried us out the dirt taking away our water while we were clearly still drinking and chatting. Restaurant wasn’t even a quarter full and it was a quiet Sunday afternoon. Terribly rude and frustrating. Was surprised because we have always liked coming here. Will probably reconsider next time.
MoCo Founding Farmers is probably my favorite brunch spot. We met up with some out-of-town friends from Sunday brunch. The friends have a 7 month old son so I requested a booth on OpenTable. It is evident that the restaurant reads the comments because we did get a booth and had excellent service. The food was fantastic (as always!) and I look forward to my next dining experience there.
Visited Founding Farmers while on a visit to the University of Maryland. Food and service were great. Lots of options for all the different eaters in our family. Noise level was a little high but the food made it worth it. Will definitely recommend it to others and visit again.
We had a party of 6. The waitress completely messed up one person’s order (she duplicated another persons order). Once we brought it to her attention she said she would fix it, but we had to ask her several times about it and by the time the food arrived the other members of the party were 90% done with their food. She did not remove the dish from our bill or offer any other type of compensation, only a weak apology. The food was good, but the service left much to be desired. I do not think we will return.
This is my second time eating breakfast here in a week. Last time was great, this time the English muffin for my eggs Benedict was burnt. I didn’t complain as was with a friend, but to me, that should have never left the kitchen as it was clearly burnt. Also, while the food is a good value, charging $4 for a can of Diet Coke is outrageous. $4.25 for a cup of coffee isn’t much better but the $4 for one can of coke is ridiculous and makes me think twice about returning.
I absolutely love the food! I think that they have an amazing menu from cocktails to dessert. Out server was super helpful when I couldn't decided between a couple different items. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. We will definitely be back.
Normally the food and service are outstanding. However, the experience this time fell well short. We got a chicken noodle soup that honestly had just one noodle. We ordered the seasonal crisp and while the taste was fantastic it was like a soup. The waiter, who was less than attentive, never noticed that it had gone untouched nor did he ask how it was. He also neglected to bring our coffee but with the dessert being a total loss we simply called it a night. Hoping this was just a blip!
Initially ordered the vegan rice and bean burger. Was then told they ran out. Ordered an alternative, suggested by the waitress who stated it was definitely vegan. When the sandwich arrived, there was cheese on it, goat cheese. By that time, the others in my party were halfway through their meals. When they replaced the sandwich, the toast was soaked in butter. Finally they brought out a sandwich on a different bread, because turns out the initial bread used is not vegan. A total disaster. I ended up eat the insides of a vegetable sandwhich and had to ask for bread on the side. They failed, entirely.
