About Founding Farmers - Montgomery County
MoCo's Founding Farmers is owned by the more than 40,000 family farmers of the NDFU, serving American inspired real food and drink with an emphasis and focus on cooking from scratch.
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

Founding Farmers - Montgomery County Ratings and Reviews
Usually love FF, but this trip was not our favorite; we were seated downstairs which was more crowded and louder than upstairs where we usually sit. Our server seemed to have a lot of tables, we didn’t see her much, and it took a while to be able to ask for the check. Also, orange juice & kids milk pretty pricey for the serving size. We’ll go back, but will request to sit upstairs, and skip the juice & milk!
After all the incredible reviews, I have to admit, my group of 5 was universally disappointed in our brunch. I suspect dinner would be better. But the brunch was expensive and underwhelming... except the biscuits. Those biscuits were hands down the best I have ever had.
I have not been there in a long time because in the past the food was not very good. However this time or food was excellent. Service could’ve been much better. We were not given plates for appetizers. Our entrées were brought out while it was still working on our appetizers. We felt very rushed even though we were probably the last seating at night.
We really enjoyed this restaurant and we have high expectations! This food was fresh, fast and creative. Our waitress was knowledgeable and helpful to assist us with our decisions. They accommodated our picky 12 year old and made his day with a great bowl of homemade pasta. My crispy shrimp were huge and very tasty. The steak was surprisingly tender and cooked to perfection! Can’t wait to go back on our next visit to MD!
The food was amazing as per usual, but the service was not. I was at the restaurant with my best friend for a night out. We had a reservation for 7:15 and waited until 7:30 to be seated. I ordered a glass of red wine and was asked if I’d like the “regular pour”, I said yes, assuming it was an average 5-6oz pour like at every other restaurant. Then we ordered the Brie farm bread to share as an appetizer. A few minutes later we ordered our entrees. However, the Brie came at the same time as the entrees which was awkward and caused our entrees to get cold as we ate the appetizer. Then, we were never checked on by the wait staff. When the check came, I asked why I was charged $19 for one glass of wine. I was told the “regular pour” I was advised to get was the 9oz pour and therefore $19, instead of the 5oz pour at $13. I was extremely disappointed and the waitress made no effort to rectify the situation except to tell me that I’ll know for next time. No one said good night or come again on our way out. I’ll think again before sitting down to eat here.
This was my first visit. We had family in town from the Seattle area. I thought this would be different place to take them vs. previous visits. We had a delicious meal. Every dish ordered
was good!! We liked the skillet cornbread, and had this to go with our meal. We ordered the Whirly Popcorn for after the main course. The Margaritas were good too! Only complaint, the
ice cubes are huge! Make sure you request less ice when ordering drinks. Service good too.
Main food ordered - yankee pot roast, meatloaf, different hot dogs/sausages, hake, steak,
and chicken. The sides were excellent too - like the roasted maple vegetables, corn on cob,
and mashed potatoes. Will definitely be going back.
This visit was disappointing, the first such visit I've had at Founding Farmers. I was entertaining a client whom I had brought to Founding Farmers once before. That previous experience was so good, my client specifically asked that I bring him here again. Unfortunately, the food on this visit was not nearly as good as the last time. The bacon lollipops were dry and chewy, and the autumn vegetables slightly undercooked and too sweet. The brussel sprouts were also too sweet. Most disappointing, the boneless rib-eye was not nearly as good as the bone-in version we had on our last visit - just not as flavorful. Finally, the beignets had a slight taste of old oil. After our last visit, my client could not wait to return to Founding Farmers. After this visit, he was much different: I will need to take him somewhere else the next time he's in town.
Excellent all around..fabulous food, drink & service ! Never been disappointed whenever we go to the Founding Farmers in Potomac with friends & family. Great variety to accommodate all tastes and served up ins timely manner...always fresh and hot. A bit noisy for our preference but everything else outweighs that.
Busy location, but parking is available and free. Have enjoyed the other restaurants that make up the Farmers group so decided to give this one a try on a day that we happened to be in the area. Our meals were tasty enough and the atmosphere lively, so we'd likely go again.
Great waiter who knew all the answers to our questions plus he got a substitute meat for me for one of the dishes. Wait wasn't but about 15 minutes past our reservation time. The food was very good (breakfast items). Can't wait to try some of the other menu items and planning to spend Thanksgiving there also.
While I have dined at Founding Farmers several times, I have always enjoyed my food. During this recent experience I ordered the "cauliflower steak" and unfortunately I was not impressed. To be honest, the cauliflower "steak" was simply cauliflower...pure and simple! I will definitely return to this restaurant in the future and perhaps will order the "cauliflower steak" but I now know it is nothing more than a side vegetable.
This was our second visit. The service was better (smaller party), but the food was not as good. Our order arrived timely, yet the food was a bit cold and the chicken from the chicken and waffles was over cooked and dry. I would still give them another try.
The food and service were good but I don't like the fact that FF changed their syrup some time ago. It now has a very strong cinnamon flavor and the syrup sits on the table with cinnamon sticks in it. I've asked about getting syrup without the cinnamon the last few times I've eaten at FF and I've received the same response each time... "We make our syrup in-house so we can't change it".
In my opinion, if you make your syrup "in-house", you should be able to make it however you choose to. It would be nice if FF would consider making both their signature cinnamon syrup as well as a plain syrup for those who don't like such a strong cinnamon flavor on their blueberry or chocolate chip pancakes.
The staff was incredibly accommodating. They were flexible when we requested a change in reservation time. The waiter was very insightful. He was always willing to give his opinion on dishes and drinks and his suggestions did not disappoint. This place can be pricey. Recommended for date night or special occasion. It is worth traveling and waiting to eat here.
Founding Farmer's never disappoints. I always get the Southern Fried chicken which is consistently good. So flavorful.
You also can't do wrong with any of the side- mac n cheese, green breens, collard greens, brussel sprouts- all good!
We also had the cornbread which is delicious and equally tasty the next day.
Get dessert, but beware that the portions for all of the desserts are large and made for sharing.
Our server was excellent. Very attentive and accommodating.
I also appreciate that they did a thorough cleaning of tables between patrons. I've been disgusted at too many restaurants that do not take the additional 2 minutes to clean underneath tables before flipping them.
I was at Founding Farmers for dinner with my son and my nephew recently. We were seated promptly, had a very attentive and personable waiter, and enjoyed excellent food. My only complaint about Founding Farmers is that the place is very noisy. We were seated in a booth next to the bar, and that was ok, but the overall noise level is quite high.
My son and I had the shrimp and lobster risotto. The lobster was a bit overdone, but the seasoning was wonderful. I'd definitely order that again. My nephew had the scallops meuniere, and generously shared some with us. The scallops are incredible! My son will order those when we go back.
Founding Farmers was again a pleasant experience. the food was good with a lot of variety which was good for our group. The only downside was the service. Several times we waited for someone to come to the table. And the orders took a while to appear. Of 4 drinks, two came immediately, one a little later and the 4th was delayed more. When one of us ordered a second drink it took forever to come. We were considering coffee after dinner but the waiter never reappeared and we decided to opt for the check at the end given the long waits.
The food was great, but at the price point you are not just paying for food. If that were the case they could knock off 50% of the current price. The service was really bad. I was served tea without any milk, a biscuit without any butter or jam, I asked for these things and it took a while to arrive. I’ll think twice about coming for breakfast.
Food is outstanding! Need to order double appetizers for parties of 6 at least because we ordered the fried green tomatoes and the bacon Lollies and everyone could really only have 1 or less per person.
We had a reservation, and while we were taken in on time, we were seated in a bright corner, by the dessert kitchen, which was distracting. So between watching the constant dessert display and waiter/waitress movement and the bright lighting in that area, the ambiance was non-existant was very disappointing for a Saturday night dinner. Good thing the food was good.
Also, after I had finished my go to, favorite, grey goose, club soda and limes, per our waitresses recommendation, I ordered the house vodka and was assured by our waitress that I would love it. However, I could not drink it at all! It was a totally different and weird tasting vodka than Ive ever had, even after mixing it with the tall glass of club soda that I ordered in hopes it would help. The waitress knew that I did not like the drink and saw that I had not been drinking it at all, and still charged us for it. I did not want to make a big deal about it once the check came because I was with a group of people.
