Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

Food is outstanding! I tasted the best cornbread I have ever had. The chicken and waffles are excellent as well. Very good service.
This was our first - but, certainly not last - time to dine at Founding Farmers.
We LOVED everything! We saw a lot of pans of cornbread flying out of the kitchen, so theirs must be amazing. We had soup with in house bake ciabatta bread. Yum!
We also had the slow roasted short ribs and oven roasted veggies. MUST HAVE! So tender and some of the best ribs we’ve ever had.
We were so full, from dinner, that we couldn’t even think about dessert. We saw a lot of To Go/doggie bags :) The servings are delicious and generous.
We love how this restaurant also has sister businesses....like a bakery, a distillery, etc.
Based on the size of the crowds here, we weren’t the only ones who enjoy this place.
Food was very good, but the pacing (on a Monday night) was terrible. Our appetizer arrived 20 minutes before our drinks (draft beer!) and the main course did too! The adjacent table had the same problem. Interesting enough to return, but bad pacing almost ruined our dinner.
Never had a bad meal here. Great service, and solid experience.
Two colleagues from work joined me for lunch. We were seated upstairs (better for conversation) and the food was great! Steaks and salmon were prepared as ordered. Service was attentive and efficient. We had a great time!
Very good service. Requires reservations. Variety of good menu selections. Not recommended for quiet conservation.
The food and the service were outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant.
The food was outstanding as always! Thank you for doing that so well every time.
We were disappointed to see that the menu prices have all increased by $2-3. Our server was friendly but a bit inattentive. It took us 15 minutes to get her attention to ask for the check which made us late to our next engagement.
Do not eat the poke salad on Sundays. Just don’t, trust me.
Had a reservation but still waited to be seated. Waited over an hour to get 2 diet cokes and green tomatoes. Waited another 45min to get entrees that had been sitting for awhile, so the shrimp was over cooked and food a little cold. Overall, poor experience.
12:30 reservation. Checked in 12:30. Told to wait in alcove upstairs. Had I not checked back in 20 minutes to find them looking for me downstairs, they probably would have given my table away. Seated 25 minutes after my reservation. We had a tight schedule and had shorten meal duration and adjust other plans.
Requested more bread to enjoy superb sauce. Bread charge $3. (Ultimately waived) Really? What a pretentious way to put a damper on an otherwise good meal. This is not a discount restaurant, and this policy was out of line with our expectations and meal bill.
Server was top notch.
Would not return.
It would be helpful if there was a better, roomier waiting area or somehow the reservation list was managed better so everyone wasn't so crowded together waiting for a table. We had a reservation, and still waited 10-15 minutes to be seated. Then we felt rushed out of the restaurant--my friend and I were still talking, but the waitress came by, and took our bottle of water, napkins, etc.
Great People, Great Food, Great Drinks, overall a great time!
Loved Founding Farmers for brunch.
Great atmosphere. Great service.
Highly recommend the leak hash and the beignets.
Make a reservation for brunch. But even if you have to wait it's worth it. Good food. Good breakfast cocktails. Creative and tasty!
Made reservations for 3 and attempted to seat us at a table clearly for 2. Eventually we were relocated to a more appropriate table. The food was okay. Personally, it was too salty. I ordered the roasted Chicken. Husband tried it as well and said it was salty. Ordered a glass of wine and did not receive it. We had to have it removed from the check. Maybe it is just me or the place was having an off night, but I found the experience underwhelming.
Food is amazing! I will definitely be back
Okay, I think the food here is amazing. Very very good. However, they cram you in there like sardines. It's really difficult to have a conversation without the table next to you listening in and it's a little uncomfortable. I would not recommend coming here on a date. Come with friends, who want to go out, and have a good meal.
Very disappointing!!! We had a 7:30 reservation, the hostess (young lady) called us and said that we would be seated upstairs we made our way to the staircase where she directed us and this guy comes out of no where obviously another hostess and takes our seating ticket out of her hand. It seems he reassigned us downstairs in front of a very cold window and noisy area. He then proceeded to take two women who just walked in the door upstairs obviously to where we were supposed to be seated. We could see that the hostess who originally tried to seat us upstairs and now was told to seat us on the first floor was agitated by the last minute reassignment. Once we were seated I went upstairs to see what it was like and certainly understood what happened once I got up there. Upstairs is much nicer, quiet, warm. I felt discriminated against. I will never return. What’s sad is that the owners of this establishment probably doesn’t even know this is taking place and probably wouldn’t stand for it. Either way, I make good money and will not waste it in this way again and I certainly will not recommend it to any of my friends either. Very disappointed!
Waited about 5-10 mins for our reservation. Rachel was a great server! Will definitely be back!!
First visit to Founding Farmers and will definitely be back! Food is superb and there is a multitude of unbelievable choices for any palette.
Went here with 4 adults and a toddler on Saturday night at 6. We had a reservation, but still waited an additional 20 minutes for a table. We were seated in a large semi circle booth and when we went to sit the booth side had grease and food all over it like it wasn’t even wiped down for us. Took awhile for our waitress to come over, and that was consistent throughout the meal. The place was packed but the service is slow getting drinks, ordering, didn’t get a single drink refill, and we waited a long time for our check to be given. Food was okay. Lots of options but we weren’t wowed, no kids menu. Several items were cold but since we waited so long we just made do with what we were given. Highlights-chicken pit pie & the cornbread stuffing. The meatloaf is very dry and salty. Autumn veggies were cold and mostly onions. Overall good spot if your visiting looking for a large selection of food for a group but I was really disappointed in our personal experience.
Great food. Too noisy for conversation
Food was flavorful and creative. Atmosphere was enjoyable and the staff was very helpful.
The food is great and fun. You must have a reservation or it's a long wait.
Food was good. Thank goodness we had a reservation in advance as there were dozens of people in line waiting. Service was poor. Repeatedly had to ask for the same items at least four times. Server was no where to be found a majority of the time. Drinks came after food. Neighboring table was complaining about the length of time they were waiting for their beverages too. At the end we walked around to find a manager to pay our check. No, we will not be back.
It wasn’t bad it just wasn’t what it was that got my wife and I excited to visit. One of our favorite dishes that we order, the crab dip, was recently changed and doesn’t taste the same as the original. The drinks were ok, just not wow. The fried chicken which we get every time lacked the seasoning as before. Maybe we just have to take a step back from them for a while and visit them in a couple months
I still believe that using pagers will eliminate concerns of the patrons having someone else placed ahead of them.
Was good, showed up 5 minutes before reservation and waited about 15-20 minutes to be seated. Service was decent and overall was a good experience.
Cocktails terrific, food delicious, a bit noisy but a fun place to dine- definitely recommend
Founding Farmers was recommended by multiple friends and it did not disappoint. The food was excellent. A must for DC trips!
The service was the absolute worst and the food was marginal, except for the carrot cake which was delicious.
So far I have not ordered anything I didn’t like. Food is fantastic and always cooked to perfection
For me the biggest issue is the lack of flexibility of the restaurant, for example to split a salad that is being shared, the expensive salads at a high cost. But I like coming here because it is convenient.
Our reservation was at 8:45 our table was not ready till after 9:15. No one seemed apologetic about the wait. Food was great! Service needs work.
This place never disappoints. Always great food, drinks, and service.
The food and service were excellent. Prices reasonable enough for DC. Our major complaint was the ambient noise level, which was HORRIBLE. We were at a two person table and literally had to shout at each other the entire time in order to be heard in a normal conversation. They definitely need an acoustic engineer to work on this issue.
Food is good， but we waited for a long time to get our foods
La Paloma was a great drink! Chicken and waffles were good!
