Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.
We only waited 10 minutes for our table because we arrive 30 minutes early. I will come back!
The food was very good but the waiter seemed uninterested when we told him one of our orders didn’t come out
Had family visiting from Spain, wanted them to experience American dining and this choice did not disappoint. Only waited a few minutes past our reservation, seating upstairs in a round booth was perfect for our group needing some help with menu translations. Great choices for apps, loved the crab and artichoke dip, many delicious dinner selections made it hard to choose! Everyone enjoyed the concept and perfectly prepared entrees. Thank you!!!
It had been several years since I had been to FF, wasn't the same as I remembered. I was sad to see that the Popcorn of the Day was gone, and a kettle of popcorn is now one flavor and cost $7. Also, the size of the cocktail I always loved (and the presentation) were far from what they once were. I'd still go back, but I sure miss the way it used to be vs. how it is now.
My eggs were cooked but somehow wet. Everything on my plate was wet.
Amazing food, all served hot and fresh. Service and decor were awesome as well. If I ever find myself in the area again, I will definitely be making a stop. It's a farmer owned restaurant so they put their heart and soul into making their customers happy and full.
Service was not great. They messed up my order (ordered grits instead of toast, but got toast and no grits), which happens. However, I told the runner I ordered grits and he said he would get them. He never returned. I told our waiter at the end of our meal, since he never came by to see how things were after the food was delivered. He took the check and said he would fix it. He returned with the check and had changed nothing. We paid and left exactly 15% tip. The tables next to us got the food meant for another table, and it took 15 minutes for that to be fixed. We were really disappointed. We had made a reservation a month earlier since we had heard this was a DC experience not to be missed. Instead, it was just like any typical breakfast restaurant, only not as efficient. Wouldn’t recommend it.
Very crowded in lobby area! Food was blah and service was horrible! On the plus side, drinks were good. Would not return!
Had 7:30 reservation and place was packed. Seated only a few minutes late however took a while for server to check in. Finally were able to order by 8. Food was pretty good however mashed potatoes had too much butter and broclini was a little tough. Highly recommend cedar plank salmon and skillet corn bread. Also fried green tomatoes were fun to try
Excellent food and service. We go twice everytime we visit DC
Great food and amazing coffee!!
Hands down the best meal I can remember eating recently!
We had made a reservation for 6 and were immediately sat. Immediately upon sitting (in the very center of the restaurant, we noticed there was a large air vent strip above our table that was blowing REALLY cold air. We mentioned the vent immediately to the waitress and she stated that she knew that they get complaints about the cold air at this table and she would ask a manager if they could turn down the air. We asked about another table and she said she would check. It is hard to explain how cold this air was, the 2 men in our party never complain of being cold, but as one of our party stated it was like being set in the freezer. The ladies in the party all huddled at the other side of the table. I would recommend that if you are put at this table to demand another table. Later we were told that the air could not be turned down as it controlled the entire restaurant.
The server was a nice young girl but didn't really know the menu and when asked about the chicken and waffles on the menu stated that it comes with one dark breast and one white breast (we all got a great laugh about a multi-race chicken). As a note, the chicken and waffles came with a breast and a thigh quarter and were really tasty. The Straw and Hay bucatini and the goat cheese ravioli were all a hit.
When we arrived we were old two different things about our table being ready on time, in fact we had reservations and was on time for them. They were not communicating and it left us uncomfortable.
This was my first time.
The Service was great. Chris was the Very BEST! He went above and beyond he made the entire experience worth it.
Founding Farmers was one of the places that I was eager to eat at again after my first visit to DC. The staff and our waiter, Nathan, were incredibly hospitable and the food was delicious along with the drinks. It still remains one of my favorite restaurants and I can’t wait to come back.
Service and food were out of this world GREAT!!!!
It was a little loud, but we didn't mind that; when everyone is having a great time, that's expected. We will definitely go back; there's lots on the menu that we want to try!
Best crab dip and skillet cornbread EVER!!!
This is the one restaurant I wanted to make sure I went to during my first visit in D.C., as it was the most recommended one to me and it definitely did not disappoint! I loved the story behind the restaurant, and everything was reasonably priced (for the city) and delicious. I did have to wait about 20 minutes after the time I made a reservation, but once we were seated the servers were as attentive as they could be given the jam-packed Sunday lunch rush. I would definitely recommend anyone go!
Very poor service. Took 20 minutes to get a glass of water. Food took a very long time and came out freezing.
Food was good but service was impolite and unprofessional. Not a place for a relaxing brunch.
Terrible service and server with a poor attitude. Ruined our day.
I originally was excited to dine here with the raving reviews this place received, unfortunately I was disappointed with my overall experience here. This was my first trip to DC and this was dubbed "the number one brunch place" to eat, but even with a reservation I ended up waiting an additional 30 minutes. The server was not very in tune with our tables needs, I had to ask for silver wear, napkins, etc. No true complaints for the food other than that it was pretty salty. Unfortunately, I will not be back here.
Food felt so homemade and pure !
I wouldn't recommend FF, to a friend any longer. Unfortunately the quality of the food and the service have both dropped a great deal over the past year or so. This past visit was a cascade of errors all avoidable, but all cause by lack of care in both the kitchen and service staff. From the luke warm lates that arrived 20 minutes after being ordered to the lack of attention from our server the meal was a 5 out of 10 at best. The waffle was soggy and had obviously been sitting for a long time, the eggs were all WAY over salted to the point of being almost inedible. Our server never once asked if we needed anything (and we did) and I had to flag down other servers. Overall, despite the popularity, I doubt FF will hold on without some significant tightening up on the care to both food and service aspects of their business. Very disappointing
Best breakfast in the USA!! The eggs, pancake, bacon upgrade , goat cheeses &beets and the French press and on and on . I’m from Savannah but have been there 10 times and high expectations. They always exceed them. Well done!!
Slow service. Food started off strong but ended poorly. Appetizers were really good: beignets and peanut butter marshmallow toast. Entrees: beef pastrami hash, crab cake benedict, and Founding Farmers breakfast. Beef pastrami hash needed more pastrami - very few chunks in the hash. Crab cake Benedict didn’t really have an actual crab cake - just an underwhelming deconstructed crab cake. The FF breakfast is almost like the one you could get at Denny’s except maybe better sausage. Drinks - Bloody Mary is spicy (lots of cracked pepper) and the milkmaid coffee was great.
Didn’t like this place at all pancakes tasted cheap and French toast was fried tasted like frying oil! I had a stomach ache terrible
The casual vibe with outstanding food and service is one of the best experiences in DC
Very long wait for reservations. Food was terrific service good.
If you don't mind waiting for over a half hour with reservations for a table for 2, your best bet is not coming here.
Interesting menu, portions great - definitely something for everyone. The staff was friendly and pretty efficient for Saturday night though it took them awhile to seat us. I had the meatless Reuben which was a little too salty, but otherwise great. My side of mac n cheese came out cold but they worked quickly to get me a hot side of it. My companion enjoyed the veggie sandwich with a side of butternut squash risotto. A little loud, but really fun place to grab a bite in the area.
We had reservations for 6:00 pm because we had tickets to the NSO at 8:00. We do this often and always have plenty of time. We arrived on time to be greeted by a crowd and did not get seated till 6:20, We ordered our drinks at 6:35 and because things were slow due to the. Road, we ordered our dinner when we ordered our drinks. When our salad and soup arrived at 6:45 we were still looking for our drinks. The tomato soup was good but the kale salad lacked imagination. I order kale salad whenever I see it on a menu and his was the worst one I’ve had. Y husband ordered the fish and chips which he thought were good but my chicken bolognese was terrible. The sauce was bolognese and Alfredo and neither were mixed. The pasta seemed to be swimming in a sea of sauce.
We will not plan twine there again
Great service and atmosphere. Located close to the metro.
Muy buen servicio y ambiente. Situado en cerca del metro.
Impossible burger was very dry, no options for vegans. Drinks took forever ti come to my table. I was seated wat past my reservation time.
This was my first visit to founding Farmers, I'd heard it talked up so much so when I had some out of town friends coming in I figured I'd take them to a place unique to the DMV. We had a reservation for 3 but ended up being a party of 8 adults and 4 kids and they were pretty great about accommodating us. The service went south after that because first I ordered an old fashioned which when it came wasn't an old fashioned, then we ordered at our table that only sat 3 of us and a couple that got seated after we ordered ending up getting their food before we did. They were white and we were black. I got the chicken and waffle which I'd heard was a go to meal and I was disappointed. The waffle was so airy and lacked any density, the chicken wasn't marinated at all becuase only the skin had any flavor, the chicken itself was dry and bland. I very underwhelming experience. My friends said they enjoyed their meals though, so maybe I just got unlucky on mine.
In my reservation I put that I wanted to have a booth. I did not get a booth. I got sat at a table that was shoulder to shoulder with other tables. I hate that, which is why I asked for a booth. We ordered our food and asked for cornbread to start. We never got it, it never came out. I ordered chicken and waffles as a main dish, and the chicken was fried to a hard crisp, there were only three small thumb size pieces of chicken, and the waffle was soggy. I’m from down south, and this was an embarrassment to chicken and waffles. Overall a bad experience from start to finish.
Our waitress appeared to have it together but the reality was: she made our table wait a long period of time between requests, We also has to remind and repeat our requests to her. She seemed to spend more time with serving other tables. She also charged another table’s bill and our bill on my credit card, and didn’t tell me of her mistake. She knew there was a problem, but glossed over it, like she was afraid to own up to it. I had to call the restaurant to straighten it all out. Annoying, and no offer from the restaurant to make it right. Why not offer a free dessert or a free appetizer. I have received better service at this restaurant by a different waiter. The service truly makes or breaks the experience. As always, the food is outstanding. The waitress’ name was Regina.
One of my favorite restaurants! Fun atmosphere, amazing drinks and food!!
Fresh clean food, friendly service, and a delicious pastrami hash.
We waited over 2 hours for our food, which came out cold, and our server was unhelpful and didn’t seem to mind that we waited so long. I will not be dining here again.
I would recommend it to a friend because it is somewhat of an iconic restaurant in DC. However, I did not find it to be special in regard to the food or service. Our waiter was not friendly but he was prompt. The benedicts were not the best. It is very noisy because it is so popular. We were with a friend who we do not see regularly and it was difficult to visit.
