Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

It seems their interest is in turning tables. We felt rushed. Also, the flavor of the food was imparted mainly by heavy doses of salt.
One word, amazing!
I like founding farmers. Creative menu, good staff and neat environment. I had the gazpacho and the egg salad sandwich. The gazpacho was very good. The egg salad sandwich was mostly bread and not much egg salad. My friend had the shrimp and grits which he thought was OK. Service was good and professional
Table was sticky and smelled of stale beer. Two things were missing on order
We thoroughly enjoyed this meal. One of the best restaurants in DC. So delicious.
The food was fantastic and our server was lovely. It is loud in the restaurant so probably not good if you're looking for an intimate setting.
The Founding Farmers restaurant and staff were wonderful. We were hoping it would be a great start to a night at the Kennedy Center and it was! Turns out that traffic was horrible that day, so despite leaving 45 minutes early, we were 15 minutes late. Founding Farmers accepted our reservation with a smile. The food was amazing, flavorful and filling and even though they were crowded, we didn’t feel rushed. The crab dip was the best I’ve ever had and my burger was perfectly prepared! It as a very enjoyable dining experience for our group. All smiles means we will definitely be back.
I had a salmon salad, it was $25....seriously. Value? Not really.
Birthday for my son
Most delicious burgers!! Food was amazing and fresh.
Food was great we ordered three meals for two of us. The server was a bit pushy. this was a business meeting and evidently, we talked to long for her liking.
Our 17 year old son said it was the best burger he’s ever had. High praise!
Loud but the food was great!
Food and service were great! Can’t wait to come back!
Great food and personal service. Manager stopped by to chat. Very nice.
It was ok but hyped way too much. The wait staff was unfriendly but efficient.
The servings were large and very tasty but it was very unimaginative.
I really thought it was going to be more of a homage to the farming community with inventive dishes. Basically just same old same old.
Great food, very packed so service was not slow but not completely on it either. You can tell these are fine ingredients.
What can I say. Just awesome. Thank you for helping me provide my husband with a Great Fathers Day
We made a reservation on OpenTable and unfortunately they gave our table away but managed to seat us within a reasonable amount of time and the food was absolutely delicious!!!
This was our 1st time and we enjoyed this restaurant. The Yankee Pot Roast and Chicken Pot Pie were awesome. We also ordered deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes. Both appetizers were so so and we would probably not order again. Our server was pleasant and very knowledgeable about the menu and beers. He made helpful suggestions. The restaurant is fast paced, a bit noisy, but feels energetic and welcoming.
Father’s day at Founding Farmers didn’t disappoint. Cornbread and crab dip for appetizers + cedar plank salmon, chicken and waffles, fried shrimp, crab cakes and prime rib dip for entrees. House made sorbet and the assortment of cookies for dessert topped it off for us! Highly recommend reservations.
Father’s day occasion. My husbands fish was the wrong fish so they had to take it back, then it was hugely delayed to come out. Otherwise it was fine.
The server was great, the leek hash browns amazing and the grits heavenly and memorable. The French Toast was middling (overcooked and thin) but the toppings, sans heavy syrups and added sugar, were very much appreciated. Only loses a star because we had reservations and still had to wait -- they took walk-ins before those with reservations on a very busy Sunday. I was happy they seated our group upstairs as it was somewhat quieter. Downstairs din was so loud that you could not have conversations.
My husband enjoyed his Father's Day lunch. Great selection of food and everyone left happy!
The beignets were delicious! We enjoyed our breakfast. Suggest a reservation. Perfect spot for a delicious meal
Great Service. Food was good. My only complaint would be that if you are serving breakfast and order eggs cooked a certain way and they come out well done that’s a big Fail! I see this at most places these days. I don’t like to send things back especially to a busy resturant, they way eggs are cooked says a lot about a kitchen and it’s quality co trol in my book. If you can’t get it right you have the wrong person on the griddle. Overall we enjoyed the rest and we had a fantastic server.
Their veggie burger is the best I have ever eaten! Everyone in my party loved their food. It was fresh and flavorful. We will definitely be returning.
Wonderful place. Was just surprised that even with a reservation we had a 20 minute wait
This visit was ch differy first visit, two months ago. We had to wait to be seated, even though we made reservations. The maitre'd was busy chatting with prospective diners who had not made reservations. When we were finally seated and had ordered, the server kept getting our dishes confused, giving each party the other's dish. There were only two of us. The food was not as delicious as the first visit. there was constant clanging as the waiters kept dropping dishes on the floor t our table. At least three times to my count. I couldn't believe you guys had gone from a busy but comfortable, pleasant dining experience to such a noisy indifferent restaurant. Fortunately, Washington has lots of other offerings. Very disappointing!!
This is our 2nd time here, it was that good on our last visit 2yrs ago we booked to return.
Founding Farmers was an excellent choice for my husband and me on our first trip to DC. Their menu choices are amazing and the food is delicious. Our server was happy and accommodating. I highly recommend Founding Farmers.
We had to wait 25 min for our table although we had a reservation. Very frustrating but the food was good.
Food and service was excellent.
Founding Farmers is one of my favorite restaurants in DC. The food is excellent and the customer service is wonderful!
Food is excellent!!
Father’s Day brunch food was excellent, when in DC it’s a must.
Great food and customer service!
Typically love founding farmers. This time the food was not good. The cedar plank salmon was NOT anywhere near as good as it usually is and the brcollini that it came with was cold
Fun place, good, solid American food. Service not that great. Party of six, 5 in our group were served their main entree, the sixth persons entree didn’t come out for 10 minutes. Very awkward, the entire group sat around waiting for the last entree to come out.
Made reservations and still waited 20 minutes but completely worth it. Menu was great, hard to choose and everyone in our party raved over their food. Waitress was a doll! Outstanding, hope they open one in NY.
