Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

The food was great a little noisy but other than that service was outstanding
Even with a reservation we waited 30 minutes to be seated. The servers were slammed and unable to check in on us regularly. The food just ok and was overpriced
The food was excellent, nice atmosphere and really good service! I recommend!
Founding Farmers is a popular spot for tourists and visiting parents of new DC transplants. The food is good, but no better than other similar restaurants. It's nothing to write home about. Wait times are insanely long without a reservation. Our service has felt very rushed on past trips as servers try to turn over tables as quickly as possible. This weekend, my most recent visit and probably my last, I brought an out of town friend to FF for dinner on her last night. We skipped drinks since we had already had a lot to drink over the weekend. Our server all but ignored us and was completely inattentive. We couldn't get her attention and she couldn't leave our table fast enough. She missed multiple requests because she left so quickly. However, she spent a lot of time and energy on the people at the table behind us, who all ordered drinks and entire bottles of wine. Apparently if you can't or aren't drinking at this restaurant, you aren't worth your server's time or energy. Founding Farmers may have been at the forefront of DC's revitalized dining scene ten years ago, but with all the other outstanding options in this city, FF is one you can skip.
The various dishes were hit or miss. The cornbread and crab dip appetizer at work very good, but the spare ribs, which three of the four members of our party had, were fatty.
The service was excellent, however, in the ambience, while loud, was good. If we do this restaurant again, we will be very careful with our menu selections.
Horrible service at this location. Not up to par with other locations.
Food was great, nice selections and very tasty. Interesting drink selections, which was fun. Our server was not very familiar with the menu, so asking about various items was tough because he just didn’t know (he was not new). He was friendly enough but disappeared often. Thankfully, the meal was great so it could be overlooked.
Service was super slow, from getting drinks to getting our apps, but our entrees were supper yummy and arrived in a timely manner.
Visiting from Nashville , food was delicious 👏🏾
Will highly recommend & return again .
Recommend using OpenTable to reserve in advance. Had table for 2 ready within 5 minutes of arrival ahead of reserved time!
Great good! Energetic atmosphere, make a reservation.
Very poor service. Drinks very expensive. Very small portions. Very disappointed.
Brought an out of towner here for his first visit to DC in years. The food was amazing! We devoured everything on our plates. He loved it so much! Can't wait to come back
Everyone goes crazy about this place but it is not very good. Service is atrocious and food is mediocre.
The food was great!
Packed our group into a very tight table making the experience physically uncomfortable. The server was very rude l, rolling his eyes when anyone asked him a question or incorrectly ordered. Ending up getting the wrong dish, but I just wanted the meal to end rather than keep having to interact with him.
Food was ok, but the surrounding experience makes me want to go elsewhere in the future.
Walked right to our table at our reservation time. Food from their own farmers. Cocktails from their own spirits, hand made juices and syrups. Our server (Ernesto’s Cousin 😉) was wonderful helping us decide between cocktails and apps. A great experience. If we were in town for more than two days we may have gone back for a second meal. Definitely will be back the next time we’re here. Thanks for a wonderful evening!
Not sure why I bothered with a reservation we still waited for 25 minuets before we were seated. The service was horrible and the food was fair. Save your money and eat elsewhere.
Took the waiter’s recommendation of which entree to get and it was great. I had the salad with steak on it. My friend had the butternut squash ravioli and liked it too. The noise level is horrendous here but since my friend is Deaf, we could communicate anyway. I wish they had a waiter who is ASL fluent but we managed.
Fun and delicious! Highly recommend this restaurant!
I’ve been to founding farmers several times and the food is always good! my go-to meal is the balsamic blue cheese bacon burger. Their farmers custom tea is amazing! As the server was taking our order when another customer attempted to interrupt her. She kindly asked them to wait until she was finished. I truly appreciated that she valued our business!
Founding Farmers is reliably delicious, with lots of fresh ingredients and friendly staff. The entryway on Pennsylvania Avenue tends to be packed, however, and the restaurant would do well to seat guests as soon as they arrive rather than making them wait for their parties to be complete. The noise level is fairly high, making this a bad venue for a quiet conversation but a great place for brunch of lunch.
Awesome breakfast with my family during our stay in Washington. We need a place like this down in Wall township, NJ
Founding Farmers never disappoints! Great drinks, great food, great atmosphere! Worth the drive for me.
Perfect birthday lunch spot. Great food, good drinks, and amazing atmosphere!
Mid-week business lunch was not only memorable but delicious! Great trendy vive, outstanding service and and a very colorful, creative menu!
The food never disappoints! Great portions, tasty, and a good variety. The service is not always good I have had it when it is too slow or the sever has not been professional which takes away from the experience.
First time with a not so great experience. Two dishes were not up to the diner’s expectation. Sent one dish back. Drinks were not timely or well made. Service was slow and not well timed. Waited after being served appetizers for 10 minutes for utensils. Occasion was a birthday celebration so did not want to complain too much or ruin the evening by leaving on low energy!
Awesome experience! Great service and what a menu! Try everything if you can.
The food is always so good and fresh here! This is my second time coming back and I ordered the Scallop Butternut Risotto and it was so flavorful. My friend ordered the lobster Mac & Cheese and couldn't stop talking about how good it was :) The service was great and our server specifically knew a lot about the restaurant and the wine we ordered.
Very great place to come either after work, for brunch, or for a really filling and tasty dinner!!! Seriously can't come to D.C. without going here! I'd recommend making a reservation ahead of time because of how popular this place is! I went on a Tuesday at 6:15 and the wait time was pretty long!
Pre-Hamilton dinner. We arrived early, immediately seated at a small table next to a pillar. Sound level was good - until they cranked it up to a point where even the waitress had to bend in close (see comment below) and repeat herself to be heard. I wanted the Steak Frites cooked medium rare, but the waitress said they would only cook it well done, so went with Shrimp and Grits and my wife ordered Steak Salad. Her steak was almost raw, so tough that she could not cut it with a steak knife. My shrimp was really soupy, and even though the shrimp was deshelled I still managed to bite into several whole shrimp shells that were not strained out of the broth. Not very appetizing.
One other comment: tables were very close together, and wait staff appear to be trained to squeeze in between to take orders. No problem until another party was seated at the next table; the waitress ended up moving things on our table with her butt while taking their order.
I have eaten at FF in Rockville several times and had much better experiences.
We had dinner at Founding Farmers prior to seeing a show at the Kennedy Center. The location was perfect, just a few minutes drive to the venue, and the food was AMAZING. The portion was huge, and more than enough food for dinner -- neither of us could finish, but we enjoyed it immensely!
The impossible burger was soooooo good. I would have never guess it was plant based.
Great food and atmosphere . The food was amazing, good portions. Must try the butternut cake.
Nice breakfast spot. Eggs were watery and the side of tomato was two uncooked thin slices of tomato (seriously!) but otherwise food was pretty good.
Great food and ambience. Staff is very helpful and polite. Kid friendly.
I would not recommend this restaurant unless you want cold food that supposed to be served hot and a waiter who must be running a marathon demonstrating a lack of attention only topped by his lack of respect, the man was in a rush. The devil eggs were delicious
Everything about this place was amazing but it is essential to reserve a table using OpenTable well in advance as the wait is generally 1 hour if not.
