About Founding Farmers - DC
Founding Farmers, the Greenest Restaurant in DC, is owned by the more than 40,000 family farmers of the NDFU, serving American inspired real food and drink with an emphasis and focus on cooking from scratch.
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

Founding Farmers - DC Ratings and Reviews
We ate at Founding Farmers on Thanksgiving. The food was okay. Our waitress was wonderful. The host was awful. Seating was very disorganized. We had a reservation, but before we were shown to our table the host showed us the menu and asked us if we *really* wanted to eat here. He even mentioned the price of the Thanksgiving pre fixe menu. I assume it was because we had our children with us. I didn’t see him stop anyone else before seating them. Then he walked away without seating us. When we returned to the host stand to ask for our table they told us they couldn’t find our reservation and almost didn’t seat us. It was so unwelcoming and unfriendly, especially on a holiday. It’s too bad. We have eaten here many times before without kids. We’ve always been treated fine. With all the other amazing restaurants in DC, it is unlikely we will come back again after today.
I did not appreciate a couple coming in after me and immediately getting seated while I had to wait. I was on time for my reservation and this was after my reservation time so I did not understand the wait. But after that the service was good and so was the food.
I was so excited to eat here for my last dinner in DC! Sadly, I didn't get to as my reservation was for 10pm and the kitchen stopped serving by that time. We were admittedly late also, due to walking from the Capital One Arena after the hockey game but not sure why OpenTable had dinner reservation slots available for after 9:45pm if the kitchen closes at 10pm. When we arrived, there was no host or anybody to seat us, so we seated ourselves, which is why I never got to mention our reservation. When a server finally came over to us, they said they weren't serving food any longer so we just decided to leave. The reservation options might not be the restaurant's fault, but I was pretty inconvenienced because I am not familiar with the city and had to use Yelp to try and find somewhere else nearby still serving food. Had crappy bar wings a few blocks away :(
On a similar note though, I ate at the sister company Farmers and Distillers for lunch the same day and the food was EXCELLENT, which is why I decided to try Founding Farmers for dinner instead of going back to the same place again. The desserts were amazing at F&D! I had a delicious meatball noodle soup, homemade cherry pie with vanilla ice cream, and a crème brulee donut. Unfortunately, I was only visiting the country for the week, but next time I go to DC, I will hopefully be trying Founding Farmers.
This was one of the best meals I've ever had! I had the roasted chicken, it was moist and flavorful. We had the skillet cornbread for an appetizer which was also wonderful. I had a dark chocolate shake that was like drinking a chocolate bar. I wish we lived closer so it could be in our normal rotation of restaurants!
The food at Founding Farmers DC is delicious. I really enjoyed the Yankee Pot Roast. It is tender and seasoned well with green beans and mashed potatoes. The chicken and waffles is tasty. The cornbread is excellent. You must try the ginger ale scratch soda...excellent. The restaurant is often busy and if it is a small party, you are often seated in close quarters next to other guests. There are various round and traditional booths available for larger parties. Parking can be a problem in the busy downtown area. Overall, it is a great restaurant and I would recommend it to a friend.
This restaurant requires patience. It's a very busy place and the noise level is high. It may take an hour to get your food from the time that you are seated. However, the food is worth the wait. The menu is filled with comfort foods and it's fresh. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
The food was good but this this place was a little overhyped. I think this is a overall good spot and has good location which is why it was on everyone’s list, not because the food is so amazing. I would recommend the Founding Farmers to someone if they are in the neighborhood but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this to a person coming out of town looking for an amazing brunch. The beignets were amazing though!!!
There are not enough good words i can use to describe the love i have for this place. I used to live right across the street from it and go every week, and over the past year have flown from California and Florida just to brunch there. It's truly one of a kind! I highly recommend the beignets, they're to kill for! I love everything on their menu, but brunch is my favorite and their side of hash browns is a must have.
Good, fresh food as always. Packed, as always, but seemingly unprepared for it. Though we had a reservation, and we arrived early, we were seated late. Our server was hard to find, and not prompt. She also forgot our drink order. Wouldn't recommend the sweet tea, as it tasted terrible, and then even though only a sip was drank, it was not removed from the bill. Food was so good though, that I would overlook the poor service, and go back.
Definitely some hits and misses. The cornbread with the salted honey butter is worth going for alone. My prime rib was not the temp I asked for and it was tough to cut through. The 7-cheese mac-n-cheese was just okay and the Brussels sprouts were amazing. My husband got the shrimp and grits and they were meh. Nothing special but not inedible. The Apple pie was delicious but skip the triple chocolate mousse cake. The place is beautiful and the menu has something for everyone but I’d pick your choices wisely - as we were pretty much 50/50.
Second time eating here and again it was wonderful. Our server was friendly, helpful and attentive. We had a variety of dishes (large party) and everything was fabulous! It is a little loud, but I like the energy of the space. Also, a great bar with some fun cocktails.
We were in DC for three days as tourists. Had dinner one night, dessert after a play at the Kennedy Center, and breakfast on a Saturday morning. Everything was outstanding.......food, service, ambiance, and energy of this fine establishment. People having fun doing a great job for their customers. Management must be outstanding!!
Waiter was very good and knowledageable. The food was WAY over salted for all 4 entrees, my partner actually sent his back. I had the rotisserie chicken and the skin, as mentioned, was over salted and the chicken itself was dry. I’ve been before with much better luck so I’d try again just to see if they maybe had a bad night.
Excellent!! My sister and I came in from Denver and were so excited to eat at Founding Farmers. What a wonderful restaurant! Amazing service, great location, inviting atmosphere and memorable food. I HIGHLY recommend...would advise reservations. Thank you for a wonderful meal 😊
Great experience, delicious food, fun vibe! Had reservations -was in DC overnight to see a show. The wine was yummy! Multi chip and dips app was delish! I had the butternut squash ravioli, daughter had a burger - both were sooooo good! Had the chocolate mousse dessert for 2, could actually serve 4+! The waiter and staff were great! Excited to get the new one closer to us in King of Prussia.
