About Founding Farmers - DC
Founding Farmers, the Greenest Restaurant in DC, is owned by the more than 40,000 family farmers of the NDFU, serving American inspired real food and drink with an emphasis and focus on cooking from scratch.
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

Founding Farmers - DC Ratings and Reviews
Good vibes, casual dining, and excellent menu make this place one to return to. The fresh locally sourced ingedients combined with a professional experienced staff all add up to a delightful experience. Ended up eating at the bar, even though we had reservations and we were called on-time to our table. Ingredients of drinks and of each meal were high quality and fresh.
Very crowded on a FRIDAY night. Reservation s a must. We were seated within 15 minutes of our reservation. There were some larger groups saying that they were not as fortunate.
Once seated service was excellent. There was a nice wine selection with reasonable bottle prices. (Especially in DC) We had the house made pasta dishes and they were excellent. The carrot cake dessert was quite good. We will be back.
Loud, energetic and exceptional food and service. Best crab cakes I’ve had in years. Rockfish prepared very simply was wonderful and the lobster Mac and cheese was off the charts. Don’t plan an intimate evening, or having a conversation you can hear, but for food and drink it can’t be beat.
First, Kevrika provided excellent service, and was very attentive to our table, but we were surprised that one entrée came out 8 minutes after the others were served. Management kindly adjusted the temperature, as cold air was blowing right on our table. The cedar plank salmon was good and the roast chicken and beef stew were excellent, but best of all was the fabulous kale salad. Delicious beignets for dessert, and a very generous serving portion, along with an amazing coconut lime sorbet. The only disappointment was that the root vegetables accompanying the salmon were ice cold.
We were a group of five, of varying ages (20-65yrs), with one vegan, and four omnivores. We found the menu varied enough for all, the dishes we ordered arrived quickly and each was very tasty. The service was helpful, efficient, and pleasant, but (we all were thankful) not of the faux-friendliness sort: there was no "how are you guys.." "doing tonight", or "doing with your entrees", etc. The server courteously offered to provide samples of wine to one in our group who was undecided on which wine to order. All in all, our experience was very good. The only drawback was the high volume of noise. But, we all understood that we were dining at peak dinner time, 7pm, and unlike many other restaurants in the same circumstance, we COULD actually hear and understand one another's words. Thank you, Founding Farmers, for a good meal and pleasant dining experience.
This spot was cozy. The food was awesome (we ordered chicken & waffle) which wasn't expensive at all. They definitely gave more food than I could eat👍 and the servers was very welcoming and professional. The noise level was cool it got a little louder after 6pm but it wasn't nothing that was disturbing at all. I'm definitely looking forward to going back soon👍
Really good food and service. The fried green tomatoes come with a delicious green goddess dressing that’ll knock your socks off. The chicken fried steak had a lovely batter and was just the correct thickness on the sirloin. The yankee pot roast is to die for. The Bloody Mary was super tasty. Great service, wonderful tasting, and reasonably priced. A must go to in DC.
I made a reservation for Dec 12th at 7:15pm for three guest. I arrived 15 minutes early and let the guy in charge of seating people know that I was there. Was informed to come back once everyone has arrived. At 7:15pm, we were all there and let the guy know that we were ready to be seated. He informed me that they are still waiting for the previous guests to leave. I had to keep checking for 35 minutes to see if our table was ready. What's the point of making a reservation, if we still have to wait????
We tried Founding Farmers for the first time on a recent trip to D.C. and it will definitely not be the last! It was a packed house but we were still seated within minutes of our reservation.
The menu is creative yet comfortable and the value is top notch! I had the prime rib and it was hands-down the best I’ve ever had!
I'm surprised that this is so highly praised. Our waiter had to be reminded twice to bring our drinks, the steak salad, which was ordered as medium was served so well done/overcooked that it really wasn't good. The noise level limits any kind of reasonable conversation. Too many other good choices in D.C. to warrant a return to this place.
Usually the service here is great but shortly after ordering drinks we were told the server was being changed over. Service was very slow and normally the food is very good it must have been an off day in the kitchen. And slow service even continued with trying to close out the bill. Normally a very well run place but this most recent visit was not up to the normal standards the fried green tomatoes were over cooked and had too much batter on them.
Absolutely fantastic place, lives up to the strong reviews. Best French toast I’ve ever had. Party of 2, we were in a hurry and waiter was very efficient and facilitated very quick turnaround for meal and check. Recommend this place to anyone looking for DC brunch and I’m excited to return next time I’m in DC.
I couldn't believe how crowded this restaurant was. We went in on Saturday, late morning, without a reservation and the wait was over an hour. We decided to make a reservation for the next day and come back.
We ordered a few things, some better than others.
Drinks: I had the bloody mary...excellent. I always love a restaurant that uses a pepper-infused vodka in their bloddy marys. It gives it a really good kick. My date ordered a Jameson mule. It was SO strong, which can be good, but when you're looking to enjoy a cocktail, it can be overpowering. Once the ice started to melt, the flavors balanced out and it tasted much better.
Apps: We ordered the bread with brie, apples and caramelized onions. I wish I just got this for my meal because it was so good and filling. This was my favorite thing about the meal. We shared the plate between the two of us. I typically eat a moderate amount of food, and I would say after this and 1/2 of my bloody mary, I was about 3/4 full.
Plates: I ordered the breakfast chicken and waffles, which I would not recommend. The waffle was too soft (borderline soggy) and the gravy was tasteless. The chicken was good. The dish came with scrambled eggs on the side as well, which were very unnecessary. They were good, but I did not feel they fit into the dish well.
My boyfriend ordered the avocado burger. He scarfed the whole thing down, with fries, and seemed to enjoy it. I didn't have a chance to try it!
Overall, I enjoyed eating here. I wouldn't say it's worth the hype that it receives, but I'm sure there are several very good menu items that we did not have the chance to try. It was also fairly pricey. Our full meal (before tip) came to just under $80.
The service was excellent, the waitress was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. If I have the chance to go back again, I'm getting the brie bread platter for my entree and calling it a day.
We had a fantastic meal for my wife's birthday. We had a large party and after seating us a few minutes late they brought us free appetizers and more then made up for the delay. Outstanding service and most importantly food. The youngest in our party was 11 and the oldest was 70 and there was a great meal for everyone.
Visiting DC and Founding Father’s was recommended to us for brunch. Couldn’t get into Saturday brunch due to the wait time so I wisely made a late dinner reservation and it was so worth it! Cocktails were well made and creative, food was fresh and delicious, with a homemade taste you’d expect from farmers. Definitely recommend the beef burgoo stew and the apple pie. Sub the vanilla ice cream for their brickle butter (like toffee), so good!
This is one of our favorite restaurants in DC. We've never had a bad experience here. Food is excellent, atmosphere is comfortable and non-pretentious. It can be very busy and loud but not unpleasantly so. Definitely make a reservation to avoid long waits for seating.
