About Founding Farmers - DC

Founding Farmers, the Greenest Restaurant in DC, is owned by the more than 40,000 family farmers of the NDFU, serving American inspired real food and drink with an emphasis and focus on cooking from scratch.

While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.

The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

Food, drinks, service, and even bathroom soap was outstanding. Crab cake add-on was worth it; full of lump crab meat. Having lived in Seattle, I have to say that the glazed plank salmon I ordered was perfectly executed. Desserts are huge (2-3 person portions; not kidding). Very satisfying meal.

I really like this restaurant. This was the second time I had been. The first time was for a late lunch and we lived the window view to the outside. Staff and hostess could not have been nicer.

Corn bread was an excellent start to our meal. Order to food on table was exceptionally quick despite the restaurant being extremely busy.

Had a great server. Coffee and beignets were excellent. I also had the Eggs Benedict which was just ok. Big place, but reservations are helpful if you don't want to wait.

Pork chops--wonderful. Our waiter--attentive and helpful. I liked everything so well, and the portions were so substantial, that I decided to double my pleasure by saving half for dinner at home the next night. Both were substantial meals, accompanied by a delicious dry Riesling.

After coming here 5 yrs ago we were looking forward to returning. We were very disappointed. We waited about 20 min past our reservation time to be seated. Although the waiter was very nice and accommodating we didn't get our drinks until after the food was served The hamburger we ordered was raw and not edible. It had to be sent back. The rest of the food was just average, not what we remembered from our previous visit.

This is a very busy restaurant, we had to wait about 10 minutes past our reservation time. The cocktails and beer selection were interesting. They served comfort food with really fresh ingredients and attention to all of the details. My daughter said it was one of the best cheeseburgers she ever had, with a perfect roll and just the right amount of toppings that didn't overpower the meat.

The service was very bad. We ordered drinks and appetizers first and then later our main course and didn’t get the drinks until our main course arrived. Our server never came back to check how things were until dessert. It was also very noisy and difficult to converse. But the menu was very interesting

Founding Farmers is probably the best restaurant in DC but it is nearly impossible to get in. For two people, I had to schedule a reservation basically as soon as the restaurant opened. The food is obviously great and it isn't really all that expensive. I definitely recommend getting a drink here, because you basically need a Ph.D. in mixology to bartend here and every drink comes with a story. Make sure you order one of the bread options because you get a huge portion for the small dollars.

We had brunch here in a Sunday afternoon. Definitely recommend making reservations because the place was packed! It's a very swanky place. The food was delicious and portion sizes were just right! We also ordered a coffee press, which was wonderful. I loved how organic the food tasted. The only downside is their cocktails are kind of pricey, but no other complaints!

Let me be honest. My experience on 02/18/18 was horrible from beginning to end. Unfortunately, it was my Birthday and I had guests from out of town with me. So why would I recommend it? My first experience was amazing. Loved the food, atmosphere and friendliness of staff. The atmosphere was upbeat and people were waiting to get in to experience it. I am hoping the inexperienced server has been retrained and is better equipped to serve his guest. There was a waitress Carmen who tried her best to help us out even though we were not at her table and the manager, bless her heart, ensured that our bill reflected our service (gratis). The left me hopeful that my next visit would be more like my first. Can’t get my 52nd Bday back but God willing I have one again next year.

Travelers be weary. Our perception of this restaurant is that it is a Tilted Kilt for affluent college students and young professionals without the skimpy uniforms.

We had made a reservation for late in the evening and arrived ten minutes early. The hostess confirmed our reservation and snipped it would be a wait because she was still seating the 9:45 reservations. We were happy to see a couple open seats at the bar and told the hostess we would wait there.

My wife had a nice white and I opted for the house variation of a Rob Roy cocktail with bitters. Time passed so we ordered a second round but this time I opted for my favorite variation of the Rob Roy the Bobby Burns. The barman eagerly accommodated and we were appreciative. Halfway through the second round we noticed walk ins were being immediately seated and the original hostess was nowhere to be found.

Needless to say we paid our tab and left a tip intended for our barman and headed out the door. On the way out my wife who never complains mentioned to a man who appeared to be the manager or possibly an owner that we were passed over. He asked the name and then told my wife we didnt have a reservation. Clearly, in our mind what could have been a mistake or misunderstanding somehow now seems quite intentional.

We came for breakfast right at 9 AM on a Saturday (opened at 8:30 AM) and there was already a line out the door. We had a reservation and were shown straight to our table. If you don't make a reservation, forget it! The food was INCREDIBLE, the service SUPREME, and this is a not-to-be-missed breakfast place next time you are in DC. The Beignets are TO DIE FOR. The lattes, scrambles and eggs benedict were great (we were a party of 3 - I tried everything). You'll fall in love with this place!

Had a 10:00am reservation for breakfast and time was not honored. The entry was jam packed and uncomfortable to wait in. When seated had to sit in a booth right near entrance so people were standing all around. Service was mediocre. Food was delicious.

On the recommendation of our hotel clerk, we visited here. He said the food was great but breakfast was outstanding. He wasn’t wrong! He also told us to make sure we made a reservation. Again, he was right. We made reservations for Saturday on Thursday and the times available to us were 9:30 or 1:45! Even with a reservation, we didn’t sit until 9:50 or so. We received our food quickly and it was possibly the best meal we had in dc. The beignets and waffles are a must do! They melted in your mouth! My husband was apprehensive about the hype- how can this be better than a typical breakfast. He was quick to change his mind! Definitely lived up to the hype! Do yourself a favor and visit... just make sure you have a reservation!

I love this restaurant. The food is outstanding, especially the corn bread. I would give this restaurant five stars except for one reason ( and this isn't the first time). We had a 9:30 reservation but had to wait ten minutes past that time. One time last year, we had reservations and waited a half hour past that time. Perhaps they are improving.

This restaurant is consistently good. Their strengths are definitely in the "comfort food" area - stews, appetizers, etc. Service is good and very friendly, if a bit inconsistent timing wise.

A mess with slow seating, missed delivery of salad and soup then only after pointed out after entrees arrived, burger requested medium came well, no spoon for soup had to bring a hot soup again. All acknowledged by manager Nelson and barely by indifferent waiter. Free desserts and burger not nearly enough in this first time visit to popular place to make up for the ruined dining experience.
