Founding Farmers - DC
Cauliflower steak was just okay, but their pastas and fried chicken are amazing!
We were able to meet some friends that were celebrating their anniversary. It was delicious, as always!
Our waitperson, Camille, was absolutely fabulous! She was attentive and friendly, but not to the point that felt intrusive in any way . She added in extra dimension to the meal just with her great personality.
Good experience except the nasty “hostess”. She was about as welcoming as a prison matron.
Shrimp and grits was re-heated. Shrimp over cooked. Drink had no alcohol. Waiter didn’t care, made excuses. Told us to tell managers through social media. Been there a lot and was so disappointing.
Prime rib and steaks we're excellent! We had carrot cake, chocolate cake and sorbet for dessert. Large portions and delicious.
Visited on Wednesday, May 22. Made a reservation for 7pm, but wasn’t seated until about 7:10pm. The food was awesome but the service was slow, likely due to the large crowd eating and waiting. I would visit again though, I think this place is probably always “high traffic” so just gotta be prepared for that.
I'm a vegetarian and was looking forward to the Impossible meatloaf. Was disappointed they didn't have it and the server wasn't helpful with other options. Basically told me they didn't send the Impossible May so not there fault and that was it.
Andrew was awesome!
Awesome food in a high energy environment near GW University.
Plenty of choices for lunch and staff were attentive. Meals had good favor.
Unfortunately we had a horrible server. He completely ignored our table, and I had to ask for him several times. This was our second visit and was nothing in comparison to the first. After moving to the area we bragged about the food and restaurant, and it was still great, just horrible service.
The food was excellent the staff friendly and efficient. It was a nice oasis in a big city.
Watch out, vegetarians! Despite a reservation, we had to wait for half an hour before we were assigned a table and learned only then that they ran out of the Impossible Meat. As alternative vegetarian options, my vegetarian girlfriend was offered the standard vegetarian Pasta choices which are available everywhere else as well. So don’t rely on this restaurant for a special vegetarian dinner!
Definitely Need a reservation-food was excellent. The garlic chicken wings appetizer was a little dry as was the beer can chicken (6 in our party). The chicken fried steak, scallops, and chicken and waffles entrees were all superb! The carrot cake, beignets, and two kinds of ice cream as well were superb. Excellent experience. Have all your party there by reservation time. Pretty noisy but it’s from all the happy chatter at all tables!
It was incredibly busy with a 1 hour wait for a table. We were early for our booking but couldn’t be accommodated until the designated booking time. Food was very quickly produced and was really good.
Thank you very much for sharing your review with us. Our team is so sorry it did not work out to have you seated at arrival, and that we had to wait until your reservation time. :( Of course, we hope to have you back for another go and please call us at 202-822-8783 for any reservation help needed! -Amy
The food is great but the staff are what make this place special. I had laryngitis that day and my waitress brought me a mug of hot water with lemon to make me feel better.
The food is worth the wait. My husband couldn't believe I got the grilled cheese and soup but that is the best grilled cheese I've ever eaten. Also go for the cornbread and butternut cake!!
It was great! They were very accommodating as we got stuck in traffic and were late for our reservation time.
Food is fantastic. They could knock it out of the park with a warmer, friendly staff.
We had been to Founding Farmers once without a reservation, but it was almost impossible to get a table within a reasonable amount of time — I guess the wait was around 1.5h. This time, we made a reservation and were promptly seated as soon as we got there, even though we were a little early. We were taken to an upstairs table, a location that seemed even prettier than downstairs. The noise level was acceptable for a weekday lunch, and our server took care of us quickly. The food was very fresh and well prepared, served on beautiful colonial-inspired plates. The portion sizes were very good, to the point that 3 people could share 2 dishes and leave feeling full. We loved the experience, and will certainly be back to try new dishes.
Excellent food, definitely can taste the freshness. Will most certainly be coming back next time I visit DC
After hearing rave reviews, I was a bit disappointed at my first visit. It's clearly not a good place for someone trying to eat healthy; the salmon was pretty boring. Founding Farmers is probably better for comfort food like the delicious-smelling chicken and waffles one table over. It does have an interesting and extensive cocktail menu, though.
The food was unique and tasted good. The service wasn’t very good and it was pretty loud and crowded. But I loved the ambiance and the decor was nice.
Amazing food, horrible service every time we come. Wait staff takes forever to get drinks. Had to have management get us our check after sitting there forever. Waiter didn’t even come check on us after food was delivered. Never saw him again.
Belated birthday for my grandson
Thank you for celebrating with us! :) We appreciate it! -Amy
We were in DC for my sons college graduation and wanted a nice place to eat after the ceremony. Made reservations for 6pm. Thought we had plenty of time but didn’t so we called and extended our time! Ended up being late for that time. Yet Founding Father’s kept our reservations! So much appreciate all the help in making a special occasion even more special!!
Big plates! But we were all quite hungry that Sunday afternoon and so we enjoyed the food a lot!! I ordered (again) the Chicken and Waffle and still like this meal a lot! The macaroni side was aldente as I like it. The crab cake is also recommended as I think it is typical American dish. We were full at the end, but still tried the chocolate cake — one big piece for all five of us :) Service was good as well.
A couple of things... we had a reservation & still waited for an hour to be seated. The menu has changed A LOT, I also noticed the quality was not the same. Epic fail.
TSReview531, I am SO sorry that this visit was considered an "epic fail". From a delay in seating to the quality not being there, I understand being disappointed and would love the chance to touch base. I will send you a PM with my contact info. -Amy
I heard so much about Founding Farmer and decided to try it. We had reservations for 130p and not knowing it was graduation day for the nearby university, the place was jam packed. We got seated 30 minutes later. We ordered the fried green tomatoes for appetizer and it came out quickly and was quite good. However, our main courses of fried chicken and waffles took a long time (45 mins to be exact) and noticed the people nearby who were seated 10 minutes after us were almost done with their main course by the time ours came out. Overall, it was not the experience I was hoping and definitely not coming back to this joint. Maybe I’ll try the Tyson’s restaurant and see if i get a better experience.
Thank you, AnnaG for sharing your review with us. I am super sorry for the delays you encountered during this visit. :( We really appreciate your kind patience this time and are hopeful for your return to any of our locations! I will send you a PM with my email address to stay in touch. -Amy
Don't try to go for brunch with a reservation. We had one and still got seated 20 min later the reservation time. Place is packed. Food and drinks are very good.
Overall it was a good time, food for the most part was good ( my grits were not cooked all the way ) we did love how they put water on the table for you so you don’t have to wait for refills. Seating was tight, round booth for 5 is tight.
The food was excellent, the ambience was pleasant. My only complaint would be that there were several things we needed to remind the server of.
Never fails to impress - the atmosphere, drinks, food, and service, always superior!
Huzzah! Thank you SO much for sharing! :) -Amy
Great menu huge portions, didn’t feel like a farm setting , on first floor of high rise , we sat next to bar so noise was little much , but it was a good e experience
The food was not good and the service was also terrible!
Our only complaint is they didn't bring all our food out together, but it was delectable.
This was my third visit to this restaurant and this was my least favorable experience. It was so noisy and the entrance doesn’t allow room for people exiting, entering and waiting for seats. My waitress was less than enthusiastic. She didn’t visit our table often and her patience seemed thin. The other times that I’ve eaten there the server has been great. We all have “off” days so maybe it was just an off day for Founding Farmers. The food was good but not piping hot like before. I would still recommend this place but maybe during the week when it isn’t as crowded.
Great food, even better service during busy Saturday brunch rush. I was here with 6 adults and a 6m old, and initially we had to sit on separate tables. The place was busy but the host worked out seating arrangements to sit us together. The food was great as always (3rd time here) and the price was a pleasant surprise. I’d recommend the restaurant to anyone visiting DC.
Great food! Cool atmosphere. Service isn’t bad, but nothing to write home about. A little over hyped, but still enjoyable and worth a visit if it works out with your plans.
