Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.
Not kid friendly. Zero service. Good food.
The food was terrific - there were lots of dishes to choose from, pleasing everyone from adults to children. The service was on the slow side, which was our only disappointment.
We had Easter brunch there. It was of course very busy so service was a little slow, but our waitress was very pleasant. The food was very good. I look forward to trying other items.
We had a horrible server. It took 35 minutes to receive our breakfast which was basic ( eggs, sausage, hash browns and toast). Eggs were cold and unable to eat. Our server ghost us.
We had a 9:30 AM reservation and were sat at 9:50. We were told they sat parties with in 10 minutes of the reservation. That would have been helpful information prior to arrival. We have a child and did know their reservations were a close approximation. Hostess was a little rude and I guess she did know why we expected to be sat in accordance with our reservation. We were sat and waited 10 minutes before someone acknowledged us. Food was really good. Great hash browns and sausage. Coffee was really good but we had to ask for refills.
Great breakfast! Very reasonable prices for fresh, delicious food. Highly recommend!
Excellent food, service and atmosphere.
This was our third time to visit FF but we will likely skip on the next visit to DC. This occasion was sadly lacking on expectations. Cocktails and wine were good. Beer was flat. Starters were delicious, hot and prompt and we really enjoyed (corn bread, wings, crab and artichoke dip and avocado toast). The main courses however were very clearly fired too soon from our starters and sat under a heat lamp, which made them lukewarm and not that appetising. In hindsight, we noticed a trend with FF that they want to turn over the tables quickly, given how busy they are but it doesn't make a for a pleasant dining experience. Everything feels rushed and and doesn't allow time to enjoy the food and atmosphere or event to enjoy more drinks or cocktails! _Also, as a note to the restaurant--you should really consider the size of out serving platters to the size of tables you use. There was little to no room for everything on our table for 5 people, so much so that we had to move the water bottle and condiments to the chair to allow for some space._
Great food and drinks! We were seated quickly and our waiter was great. Definitely recommend the mussels!
The food was delicious and desert was great! A little loud where we sat but that would not stop us from going back.
Service was horrendous. Half the food wasn’t delivered and it was difficult to even get a drink refill. Should have known the experience was going to be rough when the hostess staff was abrupt and dismissive. This is all a shame because the food was very tasty but it doesn’t matter how great your food is if the service experience is subpar.
After hearing about this restaurant, I found it very underwhelming. It does not deserve the hype. The food was on par with restaurants like "The Old Spaghetti Factory", except TOSF has tastier options. The restaurant space was fun, and my friends and I enjoyed the kettle corn. But, it wasn't worth going to again or recommending.
Even with reservations we had to wait. We were seated 30 minutes after our reservation time.
Service was very poor
We had high expectations because so many people say such great things about this place
But our experience was so disappointing
We were so excited to return to FF. When we dined here last spring, everything was perfect. Today, not even close. We arrived early for our reservation, checked in, and ventured outside to wait. Close to our reservation time, we entered the restaurant and took a seat at the bar. We ordered two glasses of wine and a coke. The $49 cost would have been fine for good wine, but the Rose was mediocre. While at the bar, we noticed three tables near the windows without patrons clean and ready to go. We checked on our reservation a few times, but they were not ready for us. Those tables remained empty. Finally, 45 minutes after our reservation time we were brought upstairs. We passed three more tables- uncleaned, but vacant. We were brought to a tiny table and were virtually on top of another couple. At least fifteen minutes went by before our server showed and drink order was taken. We ordered our food at the same time, as we’d had more than enough time to look over the menu. We ordered the hot chicken sandwich, Mac and cheese with chicken fingers, and the meatloaf. My non picky, adult daughter did not eat her chicken sandwich. It was more of a Buffalo Chicken taste- which she does not care for. My meatloaf and potatoes were cold. The gravy was already congealed when it arrived. The beans were tasty and crisp; definitely the best part of the meal. The Mac and cheese was tasty, as was the small amount of chicken fingers. The side of green vegetables was tasty as well. While our server was friendly, she was nonexistent. For the price, Founding Farmers is not worth it.
Great menu, delicious food, great service, fun ambience!!! My teens loved it too!
Made reservation through yelp however the system didt work well but due to I have a confirmation email, they gave us a table at the end.
This is the first time we went there for a Saturday brunch but I don’t understand why this restaurant is that popular on yelp, this is actually a very normal restaurant. The food is normal, the service is bad, and the environment is dirt...especially the washroom is weird, it is hard to close the door, I mean u have to stand on the toilet to make the door close or squeeze urself to make the door close...haha.. won’t go there again! Not recommended.
The food was good as per usual. Highly recommend beignets, chicken and waffles, and pastrami hash. The service today was extremely poor though. We ordered drinks but did not receive our drinks until we finished beignets and entree were served. The server seems more occupied with something else other than servicing his tables.
Thank you, SanT for your review. We are so sorry that our service missed the mark this time and we really appreciate that you let us know! Please know, we take all feedback to heart and our Management Team will look into this with our staff that worked Saturday. -Amy
Food was outstanding. Service could have been better. Scrambled eggs were over cooked and a part of my order was forgotten. Server acted as if he would rather be anywhere but work. Other than that, everything else was spectacular as always!
Best breakfast in DC hands down for quality, service, and price. Thanks Founding Farmers! You never disappoint!
The food was great. Our server was very attentive. I especially liked the cornbread. I would have given it 5 stars if not for the rude hostess. We had a late reservation but because of the rain, we got back earlier so we went to check to see if we can get in early. The first lady was very nice and told us the wait would be about 1 hour but since we have a reservation they can try to squeeze us in so we may not have to wait for an hour. So we decided to wait. There were a lot of people so we did not expect to get in early. About 45 minutes later, we went to check and this time it's a different hostess. She was very rude and told us we should just come back at our reservation time which was another hour later. I explained to her that if we knew they cannot get us in we would just come back later and we waited for almost an hour because they told us we could get in sooner. She was very impatient and almost rude to me. Although we ended up getting in after another 15 minutes, it was not a very pleasant beginning. Her attitude was really off-putting.
All around - Excellent!
I wanted to give them 5 stars, but they have a real management problem. We had a 6pm reservation and were seated after 6:20 - almost at 6:30. Nobody offered us a cocktail while waiting, nor a comp when we sat. The waiter was terrific, but the bar was clearly understaffed - we could see it from our table. There was a full 15 minute lag between him putting in our second drink order & us getting it.
The food was - good. Not spectacular. Boring deviled eggs - felt like not enough mayo/mustard and no paprika, much less a more exciting seasoning.)
The side dishes were delicious - green beans so fresh, potatoes delighful. Entrees were pretty good - chicken & waffles - waffles great, chicken a bit tough. Lobster risotto was solid. Chicken-fried steak was also a bit tough.
Coctails were delicious - especially the Southside.
Desserts were totally 5-star.
So - go in expecting your reservation to be an approximation, and slow bar service. Order side dishes and booze, and save your appetite for dessert?
This is the fourth time we have come and will continue to come every time we are in DC the food and service and impeccable.
Server was never around, took forever to take our order. Then Drinks took about 35 minutes to arrive.
Adriana, I am very sorry that service was amiss this time and everything was considered slow-paced. This is an understandable let down and we really hope to have you back to prove this is not the norm! This said, I will send you a PM to continue this conversation. -Amy
Made a reservation via opentable. Still had to wait an additional 10-15 minutes past my reservation time to get seated. Further, several groups of people whom arrived after us were getting seated before us. We overheard one group being seated before us they had a reservation 15 minutes after hours. This kinda irked our party. Food was good. Our waiter was nice and very informative. However, I think his area may have been over-seated as we rarely saw him. Overall I would recommend this restaurant with a warning that the service could and probably will be slow/lacking.
Thank you, JesseR for your feedback. I am very sorry that there was a delay with seating your table and that service, while nice & informative, was slow & inattentive at times. :/ This said, we really appreciate you letting us know and hope to have you back soon! I will send you a PM to hopefully stay in touch. -Amy
Very nice place, good food, good ambiance, great service, friendly staff, and acceptable noise level.
The Hangovwr Hash was excellent. Great Mimosas also!
All feels very rushed. The food was great but we had no time to enjoy.
Wow! The service from when we walked into the door until we left was amazing. The cocktails and beer were fantastic and the food.....simply outstanding!!!
The impossible burger is impossibly perfect! My meat eating pal could not tell the difference! My friend had the chicken pot pie which also had a crispy crust that was fantastic - the best chicken pot she had ever had. I would say skip the Mac and cheese
The food was excellent and fresh. It, by far, was the best food that we had in DC..maybe even in the whole East Coast. They actually season their food! Our waiter did an excellent job. We ordered the chicken and waffles, short ribs, and sea bass. Everything was delicious. If we come back to DC, we will definitely plan to eat at this restaurant again.
Took an out-of-town guest. It was a lovely day, and the place was mobbed. I had made a reservation, yet was of course told that I would have to wait for my guest before being seated. I did ask for a quiet corner. After my guest arrived, we waited another ten minutes, but were given a table with much less noise that the 1st floor or middle of the 2nd.
Service was a bit slow, but the food, as always, was excellent. Waiting 20 minutes for a dessert consisting of sorbet and ice cream seemed excessive. Fortunately, we had a lot to catch up on, and the time to spend talking.
I do give the DC venue credit for coping with consistently large crowds. Just have learned to make sure visits are not time constrained.
We had lunch here while I was showing friends around DC. Everyone agreed their food was delicious. My friend who had the salad with scallops commented it was the best scallops she had ever eaten. I loved the veggie sandwich. We were pleased with our choices! Great service. Definitely will be back.
Super busy for a Thursday lunch. The food was delicious! So many great options. And a variety. Farm to table comfort food and great for kids! Clementine cooler was a refreshing drink. The bacon follis app, mac n cheese and chicken dishes were perfection. Wish I could make that Mac n cheese at home! Great service too. Hope they open a restaurant in TN!
Founding Farmers was by far the worst dining experience we had while in DC. We arrived 15 minutes earlier than our reservation was for and we're met with a snotty attitude from the greeter. We started noticing that people arriving long after us were being seated ahead of us. After 20 minutes, we inquired how much longer we it would be, and became clear, we were never "checked in".
We were seated upstairs next to a table of screaming children and asked I'd we could have a booth. We were told no, "we're hold them for reservations with 4 or more people". Less than 2 minutes later, a couple was sat at one booth and then another couple at the other booth. So much for that.
The hamburger my wife asked for "medium" was cooked so well done, it just fell apart on her plate, she didn't eat it. My Beef dip was so over cooked and dry, I left most of it. We would have complained, but our server didn't come back until it was time for the check. He never inquired about our meal or refilled our drinks.
I strongly suggest anyone thinking of going to Founding Farmers, rethink that decision.
Very nice restaurant with great food. The light was a little low so it was hard to read the menu. It was a busy evening so the noise level was high.
We only waited 10 minutes for our table because we arrive 30 minutes early. I will come back!
Great restaurant. Our server was helpful, attentive, and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. We had a table of diverse taste and she was able to assist and recommend something to everyone. Food was delicious. You must get dessert here. Only negative is the hostess stand. They did not do a good job making you feel welcome. We had a reservation, one person was running late. I did not mind so much that we had to wait for the whole party to be there, but the tone and way they communicated that information to us was condescending and not kind. In addition there is not much waiting room, so I highly recommend making a reservation and having your entire party there before entering the restaurant. Aside from the hostess stand, the experience was great. A wonderful DC location. Will definitely go back.
Good avocado toast. Cornbread had too many whole corn kernels that messed with the texture, but flavor was good and honey butter was very good. Fried green tomatoes were traditional, but for our palette very heavy handed on the thickness of fry batter. Fresh fish selection was great and well prepared. If you are interested in chicken, I would recommend the fried chicken and waffles vs beer can chicken (roasted). Dessert— chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream was great to split at the end of a decadent meal.
