Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.
The food was good as per usual. Highly recommend beignets, chicken and waffles, and pastrami hash. The service today was extremely poor though. We ordered drinks but did not receive our drinks until we finished beignets and entree were served. The server seems more occupied with something else other than servicing his tables.
All feels very rushed. The food was great but we had no time to enjoy.
The impossible burger is impossibly perfect! My meat eating pal could not tell the difference! My friend had the chicken pot pie which also had a crispy crust that was fantastic - the best chicken pot she had ever had. I would say skip the Mac and cheese
The food was excellent and fresh. It, by far, was the best food that we had in DC..maybe even in the whole East Coast. They actually season their food! Our waiter did an excellent job. We ordered the chicken and waffles, short ribs, and sea bass. Everything was delicious. If we come back to DC, we will definitely plan to eat at this restaurant again.
We had lunch here while I was showing friends around DC. Everyone agreed their food was delicious. My friend who had the salad with scallops commented it was the best scallops she had ever eaten. I loved the veggie sandwich. We were pleased with our choices! Great service. Definitely will be back.
Super busy for a Thursday lunch. The food was delicious! So many great options. And a variety. Farm to table comfort food and great for kids! Clementine cooler was a refreshing drink. The bacon follis app, mac n cheese and chicken dishes were perfection. Wish I could make that Mac n cheese at home! Great service too. Hope they open a restaurant in TN!
Founding Farmers was by far the worst dining experience we had while in DC. We arrived 15 minutes earlier than our reservation was for and we're met with a snotty attitude from the greeter. We started noticing that people arriving long after us were being seated ahead of us. After 20 minutes, we inquired how much longer we it would be, and became clear, we were never "checked in".
We were seated upstairs next to a table of screaming children and asked I'd we could have a booth. We were told no, "we're hold them for reservations with 4 or more people". Less than 2 minutes later, a couple was sat at one booth and then another couple at the other booth. So much for that.
The hamburger my wife asked for "medium" was cooked so well done, it just fell apart on her plate, she didn't eat it. My Beef dip was so over cooked and dry, I left most of it. We would have complained, but our server didn't come back until it was time for the check. He never inquired about our meal or refilled our drinks.
I strongly suggest anyone thinking of going to Founding Farmers, rethink that decision.
Very nice restaurant with great food. The light was a little low so it was hard to read the menu. It was a busy evening so the noise level was high.
We only waited 10 minutes for our table because we arrive 30 minutes early. I will come back!
Great restaurant. Our server was helpful, attentive, and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. We had a table of diverse taste and she was able to assist and recommend something to everyone. Food was delicious. You must get dessert here. Only negative is the hostess stand. They did not do a good job making you feel welcome. We had a reservation, one person was running late. I did not mind so much that we had to wait for the whole party to be there, but the tone and way they communicated that information to us was condescending and not kind. In addition there is not much waiting room, so I highly recommend making a reservation and having your entire party there before entering the restaurant. Aside from the hostess stand, the experience was great. A wonderful DC location. Will definitely go back.
Good avocado toast. Cornbread had too many whole corn kernels that messed with the texture, but flavor was good and honey butter was very good. Fried green tomatoes were traditional, but for our palette very heavy handed on the thickness of fry batter. Fresh fish selection was great and well prepared. If you are interested in chicken, I would recommend the fried chicken and waffles vs beer can chicken (roasted). Dessert— chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream was great to split at the end of a decadent meal.
The menu and restaurant concept is always interesting and unique. Check out the beer can chicken!
Great food! Great service. Innovative dishes.
Fun place with kids. They loved the devil-ish eggs and cornbread. Manhattan Special (coffee soda) made from scratch was tasty. Kids loved the pasta, especially the goat cheese ravioli. Chicken and waffles always a hit and gnocchi was perfect. Very attentive waiters and fast service, definitely recommend. Make a reservation.
First time here, really enjoyed what the company stands for and the food was perfect! I was only in DC for a night but really glad we chose this place for dinner.
The food was very good but the waiter seemed uninterested when we told him one of our orders didn’t come out
They don’t need me extolling their virtues - all the great things you hear are true. The Mac n cheese, chicken n waffles, shrimp bucatini, and catfish were great. “Grits aren’t as good as yours” said the wife. Large portions — the “chocolate mousse for 2” was almost a quart of mousse that filled 4 bellies
Had family visiting from Spain, wanted them to experience American dining and this choice did not disappoint. Only waited a few minutes past our reservation, seating upstairs in a round booth was perfect for our group needing some help with menu translations. Great choices for apps, loved the crab and artichoke dip, many delicious dinner selections made it hard to choose! Everyone enjoyed the concept and perfectly prepared entrees. Thank you!!!
It had been several years since I had been to FF, wasn't the same as I remembered. I was sad to see that the Popcorn of the Day was gone, and a kettle of popcorn is now one flavor and cost $7. Also, the size of the cocktail I always loved (and the presentation) were far from what they once were. I'd still go back, but I sure miss the way it used to be vs. how it is now.
Service was fair, waiters keep rushing us bring us the check when we still were going to have more drinks and food.
Wonderful concept extremely well executed. We want a branch in Boston!
My eggs were cooked but somehow wet. Everything on my plate was wet.
Thank you, Heather for your feedback about your eggs! I am so sorry that happened and passed along your review to our Culinary Team for their consideration. -Amy
Amazing food, all served hot and fresh. Service and decor were awesome as well. If I ever find myself in the area again, I will definitely be making a stop. It's a farmer owned restaurant so they put their heart and soul into making their customers happy and full.
Service was not great. They messed up my order (ordered grits instead of toast, but got toast and no grits), which happens. However, I told the runner I ordered grits and he said he would get them. He never returned. I told our waiter at the end of our meal, since he never came by to see how things were after the food was delivered. He took the check and said he would fix it. He returned with the check and had changed nothing. We paid and left exactly 15% tip. The tables next to us got the food meant for another table, and it took 15 minutes for that to be fixed. We were really disappointed. We had made a reservation a month earlier since we had heard this was a DC experience not to be missed. Instead, it was just like any typical breakfast restaurant, only not as efficient. Wouldn’t recommend it.
Very crowded in lobby area! Food was blah and service was horrible! On the plus side, drinks were good. Would not return!
Had 7:30 reservation and place was packed. Seated only a few minutes late however took a while for server to check in. Finally were able to order by 8. Food was pretty good however mashed potatoes had too much butter and broclini was a little tough. Highly recommend cedar plank salmon and skillet corn bread. Also fried green tomatoes were fun to try
Excellent food and service. We go twice everytime we visit DC
WONDERFUL! Thank you for sharing and please call us at 202-822-8783 for anything we may help with in the future. -Amy
Great food and amazing coffee!!
Hands down the best meal I can remember eating recently!
Founding Farmers' mission statement and message of sustainable fresh foods is one that others should follow, but Founding Farmers need to be more attentive to reservations, timely seating, and better wait service. We made a point to arrive 10 minutes early for our reservations as I had read reviews that indicated that seating was a challenge even for those with reservations. My family and I (3 in total) waited close to 25 minutes beyond our promised reservation time. Finally upon being seated, we again waited close to 20 minutes for our waitress to arrive. Knowing that this wait staff was possibly understaffed, we ordered our drinks and entrees all at the same time.
Thankfully our wait service picked-up following the placement of our order. The drinks arrived and we were off to the races. We ordered the fried green tomatoes for our appetizer. They were fresh and flavorful, but slightly over-breaded and the spices in the breading were a bit overpowering for the subtle tomato flavor. However, since we were hungry (45 minutes beyond our scheduled reservation), the fried green tomatoes were a hit.
For entrees we had the Chicken Pot Pie, the Fried Chicken and Waffles, and the Meatloaf and Gravy. All were good, but not exceptionally memorable. I will say that the Fried Chicken was probably the best as the seasoning was generally well rounded and the chicken was juicy. The meatloaf, although plentiful, was on the salty side and the Chicken Pot Pie's carrots and potatoes were too firm and under-cooked.
The upside is that the prices at Founding Farmers are totally in-line with the reality of simple foods. But price alone is not the sole reason that I dine out. There was a lot of hype about this restaurant that I wish could have been met by the final product being served, but overall Founding Farmers is passable food and a good value...which doesn't seem like a good formula for success.
We had made a reservation for 6 and were immediately sat. Immediately upon sitting (in the very center of the restaurant, we noticed there was a large air vent strip above our table that was blowing REALLY cold air. We mentioned the vent immediately to the waitress and she stated that she knew that they get complaints about the cold air at this table and she would ask a manager if they could turn down the air. We asked about another table and she said she would check. It is hard to explain how cold this air was, the 2 men in our party never complain of being cold, but as one of our party stated it was like being set in the freezer. The ladies in the party all huddled at the other side of the table. I would recommend that if you are put at this table to demand another table. Later we were told that the air could not be turned down as it controlled the entire restaurant.
The server was a nice young girl but didn't really know the menu and when asked about the chicken and waffles on the menu stated that it comes with one dark breast and one white breast (we all got a great laugh about a multi-race chicken). As a note, the chicken and waffles came with a breast and a thigh quarter and were really tasty. The Straw and Hay bucatini and the goat cheese ravioli were all a hit.
When we arrived we were old two different things about our table being ready on time, in fact we had reservations and was on time for them. They were not communicating and it left us uncomfortable.
This was my first time.
The Service was great. Chris was the Very BEST! He went above and beyond he made the entire experience worth it.
SO sorry about the mishap with your reservation check in, and our Management Team will surely follow up with our Host Staff that worked Sunday about your review. We hope to have you back soon and please call us for anything needed in the future- #202-822-8783. -Amy
Founding Farmers was one of the places that I was eager to eat at again after my first visit to DC. The staff and our waiter, Nathan, were incredibly hospitable and the food was delicious along with the drinks. It still remains one of my favorite restaurants and I can’t wait to come back.
Service and food were out of this world GREAT!!!!
It was a little loud, but we didn't mind that; when everyone is having a great time, that's expected. We will definitely go back; there's lots on the menu that we want to try!
Best crab dip and skillet cornbread EVER!!!
AWESOME! Thank you, June for sharing and we hope to have you back soon. :) -Amy
This is the one restaurant I wanted to make sure I went to during my first visit in D.C., as it was the most recommended one to me and it definitely did not disappoint! I loved the story behind the restaurant, and everything was reasonably priced (for the city) and delicious. I did have to wait about 20 minutes after the time I made a reservation, but once we were seated the servers were as attentive as they could be given the jam-packed Sunday lunch rush. I would definitely recommend anyone go!
Very poor service. Took 20 minutes to get a glass of water. Food took a very long time and came out freezing.
Oh gosh! How awful. I am very sorry for the poor & slow service, AND for the cold food that was served. :( I understand why your visit would be deserving of a 2-Star rating and would love the chance to follow up. I will send you a PM. -Amy
Food was good but service was impolite and unprofessional. Not a place for a relaxing brunch.
Terrible service and server with a poor attitude. Ruined our day.
lena, I am very sorry to read that the service was considered terrible with a poor attitude. :( I would love to know more specifics and will send you a PM with my email address. -Amy
I originally was excited to dine here with the raving reviews this place received, unfortunately I was disappointed with my overall experience here. This was my first trip to DC and this was dubbed "the number one brunch place" to eat, but even with a reservation I ended up waiting an additional 30 minutes. The server was not very in tune with our tables needs, I had to ask for silver wear, napkins, etc. No true complaints for the food other than that it was pretty salty. Unfortunately, I will not be back here.
Food felt so homemade and pure !
