Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.
I tried to have a business meeting here which is tough. Just a tad too loud for that.
Great spot for dinner with family and friends. Food and drinks were outstanding!
Our server was very negative about the menu.
Our waiter was having an off day and was not very welcoming
We had a reservation and I’m so glad because there were tons of people waiting even at 8pm on a Tuesday. We were seated quickly and our waiter arrived promptly. Almost too promptly. And had to leave again because we hadn’t even had a moment to look at the menu. When he returned he was pleasant but didn’t really do any kind of menu orientation which would have been helpful since everything is homemade or local made including sodas and drinks. My daughter and I both felt a little rushed it the food was impeccable. I had the chicken and waffles and the chicken tasted great (it could have been a touch crunchier) and the syrup was so good and cinnamon infused. My daughter had the fish of the day simple style and she was delighted with it. The house made orange soda was also really good. We had dessert wrapped to go: vanilla ice cream (it was a good size serving) and the beignets. When we got back to our hotel we dig into dessert and it was so good. The beignets seemed a little pricey but you get six large biegnets and three sauces so it didn’t seem so bad when I saw the size and number. But our feelings of being rushed we’re validated when we checked the time on our walk back. Our reservation was 8:15 and we were already walking home at 9:05. They weren’t rude or anything and I’m sure we could have lingered without an issue but like I said everything was so prompt it seemed rushed. The food was just amazing and we would definitely eat there again. I’d even call it affordable given what they serve.
Meeting up with long lost family.
Appetizer toasts were very good. I was disappointed by the pork ribs that were too cooked and not very tender, and the french fries were too fried, thin, and with a lame flavor. The place is nice, and the waitress very kind. However the man that brought ours cheese burgers got it wrong and and gave the well done with no onions to the person that ordered it medium with onions and viceversa...after specifically having asked him!
Fish entree for lunch was $33.00. Much higher then average lunch entree price. Wish waiter would have given price when he told us about the day ‘s fish entree. And fish had mushy texture.
Our waiter must have been new. He rarely followed up to update us on when we could expect the meal which took an extraordinarily long time to arrive. When it did, it wasn't even warm. The manager happened by and she had it re-prepared. Therefore, from order to receipt of the meal took every bit of 40 minutes for an order of meatloaf (which should have already been prepared, including the sides; mashed potatoes and green beans) and chicken and waffles (the chicken should have already been prepared too). We think the waiter left the original order on the counter and forgot about us. I've never had a long wait for food at Founding Farmers and waitstaff have always been extremely attentive. We even had to flag the waiter down to get the check so that we could get back to the office.
The Ahi Tuna Poke bowl was amazing.
I’ve never had a bad meal here. Usually meet for lunch. This time it was breakfast. Not nearly as crowded in the morning as it is mid-day (HUGELY popular lunch place). So we felt like VIPs. Food and service is always good, but when you are the only customers in a section of the restaurant...it’s nice. “Quinta” I think her name was, was our server. Excellent.
This was our first time at Founding Farmers and my family and myself had a great experience. We made reservations, luckily! It was very busy the evening we went, we were accommodate it a couple of minutes from arriving and we had a great service. The waiter was very personable and gave his thoughts on the dinner, which I like and was very accommodating to my kids needs. The food and dessert were delicious. It’s an amazing restaurant and would def return.
good amount of food presented. Food taste was great. I appreciated the menu options.
My server was ineffective and the food was subpar. I would not recommend.
I have been there 2x in the past couple of months (once on a weekend night and once on a weekday) and BOTH times there have been issues with our drink orders. The first time, they came out with our food. The second time, we ordered them ~15 minutes BEFORE we ordered food and they still came out ~15 minutes AFTER our meals came. Get it together.
I will not be visiting again.
This is our visit to the restaurant from the last visit to DC 4 years ago. Foods and services are as good as we membered!
FF Has great food! However you need to work on your hostess at front door & servers!
The hostess have a sorta of funky attitude
Glad they aren’t preparing my food!
First time there and enjoyed it.
There’s a long wait. We got there 15 mins before reservation and we had to wait another 15 mins to get a table. Long wait, nowhere to sit. The food is okay good but our server was forgetful. However, the bus boy was nice and took care of us instead of the waiter.
Don’t bother making a reservation cause u still gone wait...
Brunch out with friends. The hangover hash was amazing
You guys double and triple book people for the same time and then create a backlog of people who are just standing at the front door. We had a reservation for 1:30 and finally got a table at 2pm. This is after so many times of checking with your front staff. After getting the table, the server never bothered getting us silverware or checking with us from time to time on our food. I had to ask several times about our food. The server had a no-care attitude. When the food came it was cold and the burgers were dry as dry can be. On top of that, the server goes ahead and puts a 20% gratuity without telling us. I had a check for $240 and I paid without my approval $40 in gratuity for the bad service, waiting for half an hour to get a table despite reservations and for the bad food. This is one place I would highly recommend everyone of my friends, family, co-workers and anyone I know NOT to come to.
Service was poor including the hostess who was very rude.
Crowded, noisy, waiter spoke to softly, they were out of waffles which I really wanted, ice tea was brewed too strong. For for the price was not a good value.
I met up with some family friends here and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The food was delicious, the service outstanding, and the ambience was happy and lively.
We were seated late. When we got to our table, a server didn’t come by for at least 10 minutes. We ordered crab dip, hamburger, turkey sandwich, impossible burger, and lentil stew. The crab dip arrived after 15 min and was lukewarm and seems like it was sitting there for a while before being brought out. They also served the dish without having given us any silverware. We couldn’t find a server to ask for some so we had to go up to the bar to ask. I’ve had the same dish at Farmers Fishers Bakers and it’s always steaming hot and delicious. We got the single origin coffee as well and that came out after 15 minutes after ordering. There was another 20 minute gap between the main dishes which was extremely long. The turkey sandwich was extremely dry, and I mean extremely. It was inedible. The fries had a very disgusting aftertaste, not normal. It was overall very bad and overpriced. I was extremely surprised because Farmers Fishers Bakers is excellent and they are the same restaurant group. This location needs to do better.
Every time we go, it’s a 15-20 minute wait past our reservation time. Today it was a 25 minute wait. I don’t understand why they are always so backed up.
Arrived early for a breakfast reservation and were seated right away. Greeted promptly by our server who was very warm. Service was attentive and timely. Food was delish! Coffee was so good.
Eat here EVERYTIME I am in DC. Just cant beat it.
Delicious food, AMAZING service, even at 10pm! We got the last reservation and we’re starving after my daughters volleyball tournament, they took great care of us and we never felt rushed! The chicken fried steak was delicious as well as the chicken and waffles! We took a piece of chocolate cake to go and OMG amazing!
We were squeezed in between to tables and barely had room to fit or room for our server to interact. I guess they were having some kitchen issues because the corn bread was soggy in the middle and the fried chicken was burnt on the ends.
Our experience was one marred by a lack of attention to detail, giving the founding Farmers in Northwest a "resting on its laurels" feel which contrasts with the Tysons location and farmers fishers and bakers which remain high on list of places I would recommend to friends.
Our waiter, to his credit, was very new to his job, only a week in. He was professional and courteous and get much wanted to help but was missing the mark on allergens. Based on our experience, it doesn't seem like he had enough training on food allergens in the menu nor how to ensure dishes are properly modified when it comes up. After some back and forth, it took us around 20 mins to order as several items were out of stock and he had to ask the chef a few rounds of questions on allergens. We had to ask for silverware and napkins which by itself is a non-issue but is a contributing factor to the overall attention to detail feeling. In many restaurants, we don't expect wait staff to understand food allergies but with the reputation of FF, we expected better.
The drinks took a long time and when they finally arrived tasted watered down and for the most part were filled to the top with ice which is never a good start and on tasting confirmed that however even the Manhattan was also watered down tasting, despite having no ice in it.
Eventually the manager came by though we did not ask to see her, not wanting to burn our inexperienced waiter to his boss. She was very helpful and knowledgeable, I have nothing but praise for how she handled the issues with our table's food coming with and without items that affected allergies some of us have. Her handling of the situation is worthy of high praise and gives me faith for the future of the business.
Another detail issue was state of the bathrooms. I used both over the course of the evening and found both were out of toilet paper and the water pressure was very inconsistent: waterfall in one, splashing to the floor, and trickle in the other.
Way too loud; food was just fair, especially for 2 vegetarians; they were already out of one of the main items - at only 6:30pm!; our server was not personable and inattentive; no salt and pepper on the table; our neighbors to the left kept borrowing our syrup. Totally disappointing.
Food was absolutely amazing, it tasted fresh and fairly priced. The only compliant was the noise level, with the loud music and other patrons conversations I could not enjoy my meal as much as I would have liked. Overall, I would consider visiting again.
It was egg-cellent
Ron did a great job taking care of us on a very busy evening. Unique food- dine well.
Upscale comfort food with some unique twists. Very crowded, so obviously quite popular. We were unable to get a typical reservation time (say 6:30-7:45 start) and settled for 5:45 on a Sunday evening (Monday was Presidents Day, though). Still had to wait 20 minutes for a table to open up. They told us to wait at the bar. It took some time to find a couple of open seats. When we finally did, it took 10 minutes for the bartender to get to us. Our table was ready long before he got around to getting us our drinks. They told us to settle up and then gave us a hard time 10 minutes later when the bartender still hadn't given us the drinks or the check. My wife and adult son went to the table while I waited around to collect the drinks and settle up. Frustrating start. For the meal, the service was okay, the meal was pretty good. The tables were kind of jammed together so that I had to move when the folks in the corner wanted to get out. Then had to move again when the next guests were being seated - almost whacked in the head with an extra chair the staff tried to move in without warning. All in all it was an okay place, decent food, and reasonable prices for DC.
Kind of seemed like they didn't really care about how good the food was. Steak was a bit overcooked, burgers were little overdone. Love the ambiance of the place, cocktails were great - just didn't feel like they cared much about the quality of the food.
We to wait 30 min for table even though we had a reservation. We had to ask for water, and an item from our order was completely forgotten, and the food and cocktails were subpar. I don’t think the waitstaff or kitchen can handle how busy the place has gotten.
Very busy on a Sunday afternoon, but that was somewhat to be expected. Although at 4:30 PM it seemed like the place was mobbed! Very friendly and professional waitstaff. The only knock I have is that both me and my friend ordered steak and it came to our table almost at room temperature. All the food was at best luke warm and seems like it was probably sitting for a while before it came to our table.
