Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

We were seated prior to our reservation time. The food was farm fresh and the coffee was great.
We were seated under a vent and it was very cold in the restaurant. I had to eat quickly to keep my food from getting cold. The service was ok. The waiter was polite. The food is always the highlight!
Got 2 double house whiskey and coke’s from the bar while waiting for our table...bill was $60. ‘Nough said...
Great food. Upscale restaurant with a premium twists on down-home, classic dishes. Stay really crowded, so reservations are best.
Full of millenials - and way too loud for conversation - as seems to the trend everywhere now. Won't go back but "noise" is my problem not yours.
I was truly looking forward to my first time visit. We ordered the fried green tomatoes which I found to be hot and crispy breading while others in my party found a bit doughy. I ordered the chicken pot pie which was delicious. My one slight disappointed was that some of the chopped carrots weren't cleaned sufficiently. All in all, the food was good. The biggest distractor was the service. Our servers spent minimal time with us while maximizing her absence between her appearances. The lack of quality service influenced me to go down to three stars overall rather than four
The restaurant was very, very crowded. Our waiter who was super nice was a little overwhelmed and didn’t have any help from other staff so there was a substantial lag time for drinks, utensils, etc.
Overall though, the food is always good when I dine here!
incredibly crowded entry way - very loud - cocktails were as expensive as entrees.
We've been trying to get into FF for many months. We finally thought of booking it before we got to DC (duh!)!! It met all our expectations: nice atmosphere, fantastic service and great food. One thing though: when serving "home made" English muffins, make sure they are warm. They wouldn't melt the butter we were putting on them! They had obviously been warmed, once upon a time.
Tea and coffee were good and our waitress was clear, precise and efficient.
One of our favorite spots for breakfast. The food and service are consistently good. They make the best pancakes I have ever had.
Birthday brunch for my mom
Food was so good!! The seafood deviled eggs and crab dip was amazing!!
The food was delicious! My husband had the chicken pot pie and sweet potato side, and I had the Reuben and Farmer’s slaw with the autumn roasted vegetables in a maple, citrus glaze. The portions were generous and their innovative take on the slaw was terrific.
Our waiter, Mark, gave us outstanding service and made helpful suggestions.
One word of caution, however. The restaurant is packed, especially on weekends, and the noise level is very high, to the point of being bit unpleasant. Also, the tables are such that diners sit closely together and have little elbow room. If you’re looking for a place where a family or a couple can enjoy a private conversation, you might want to consider another option.
Visiting town and friend recommended FF. Only reservation available was 4:30. At 4:30 the place was packed. They did seat us fairly quickly. The tables are close together so don't plan on a private conversation. Its noisy. The food selections were intriguing and various. Our dishes were excellent and serving sizes were generous. We had no room for dessert. Big city prices (No surprise ). Its very good but not worth waiting in line for 30mins to be seated so call ahead
Great service great comfort food awesome drinks
Just love the place
It’s was my girlfriend’s holiday luncheon
Victims of their own success. Above average food served by indifferent waiters, in a loud, crowded and tightly packed space, long waits even with a meaningless reservation, and hostesses who don’t care if you stay or leave. Much better service experiences and appreciative restaurant owners in DC area.
Brunch with my three grandchildren at founding farmers was marred by really poor service. Our waiter failed to bring the children’s pancakes despite the fact that we had written the order out for him. We asked for an extra plate which he never delivered. We had to request cutlery and napkins! The food was ok. I had the shrimp and grits which was good but shrimp were over cooked. What was good were the ginger sodas. This restaurant is not what it used to be.
good fun very nice
We found founding Farmers last year while on a weekend getaway to DC. This year when we met friends in DC it was a no brainier to eat at founding Farmers again for breakfast! The service is great and the food is delicious. We recommend making reservations as they get busy due to the food being so great. Highly recommend checking founding Farmers out!
Too noisy but great food. Tables are too close to each other so you can hear others’ conversations and they yours.
Our experience at Founding Farmers was fantastic. The food, the drinks, everything!!! Shoutout to Kurtis for being one of the best servers ever. He was amazing! Definitely going back!!!!
Outstanding food and service, but we had to wait 30 minutes past the time of our reservation. I wouldn't recommend if you are on a tight schedule (theatre tickets, etc.), but otherwise this is my go-to restaurant to take VIPs, family and friends in DC!
I was disappointed that we had a 7:30 reservation and we weren't seated until 8:00. The food was overpriced and was decent but not worth the price or wait. It's become a bit overhyped.
It was surprisingly busy for a Thursday night and we were running late. They were very accommodating and sat us down quickly as well.
Always a destination when people are in from out of town or visiting the White House p
We had a excellent meal and our party of 6 has a nice table. Just wish you had bike racks to park the bikes.
Wonderful holiday luncheon party for staff! The team there took care of us very nicely. The food was a good as always and we had confidence that it was locally sourced where possible!
I had lunch with my friends there. Not only the food but also the atmosphere was also nice. I had a really good time!
This place was really good and we loved our food. The only complaint I have is that the tables are too close together to other parties. The place was clean and the food was good so we’ll definitely be coming back.
Had to wait eventhough we made a reservation.
But the overall food and drink was nice.
This was a wonderful dining experience as tree high school friends were visiting DC in our retirement years! We were able to meet up with members of our "younger generation" who are working in DC. Founding Farmers was the perfect blend of wonderful local food and "hot spot" ambience. Thank you!!
Food and service were both fantastic! Only downside was that the restaurant was incredibly loud, which made both conversation with my guest and interaction with out server difficult.
Great experience and the server was very knowledgeable
Too crowded. Service out of kitchen was slow. Tables too tight together. I felt like a sardine.
Good as always!
Not the most welcoming front desk (the place was jammed, though), but once seated, I was happily impressed. The table was decibel-safe for conversation, the menu appealing and well-priced, food and coffee delicious, and service prompt but not rushed. No wonder it’s so popular.
Overall very nice dining experience. Quality is good but quantity is not enough for breakfast.
Getting more disappointed after every visit, as I'm really a regular now yet they treat me without any recognition and seat me in a cramped little table next to someone else when the restaurant isn't full. Never ever have them given me a nice space like a booth, where just this morning I saw 2 people sitting. Service was weak and now I'm looking for a new spot to have all of my breakfast meetings.
Great service - waitress knew the menu and was able to describe common variations on the meals in addition to providing excellent recommendations.
