Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

Very noisy restaurant but cocktails and service great
Very good food!
Great place! Close to the White House and within walking distance to the Smithsonian.
Really good food and servers.
Not great - starters and main arrived at the same time. Food was cold. They did remedy this however
I was disappointed by my experience at Founding Farmers. The service was professional and courteous.
The food was promising to begin with; the cornbread was truly excellent. The signature dish of Chicken & Waffles was more of a mixed bag however. The sides of green beans and macaroni cheese were delicious, but the chicken itself was dry, ill-fried, gristly and lacking in much flavour. Sadly the waffles were little better, as they were also very dry and flavourless.
The mimosa was delicious yet overall I felt that the restaurant was not good enough to warrant its prices. This is particularly considering the strange system whereby reservations are still made to keep waiting upon arrival for tables to clear, which rather defeats the point of reserving one.
great time with my parents and sister from beginning to end!
We all arrived on time, but didn’t get seated until 35 minutes after our reservation.
Had dinner with my boyfriend on a Friday night here. Has to wait about 15 mins which wasn’t too bad. Definitely noisy in here so hard to have a conversation but the food was excellent and you get really big portions so definitely come hungry. We both got burgers, which were a touch more cooked than we ordered but still enjoyable. They also have a decent drink selection. Overall, would definitely come here again and try other things.
Started wife birthday celebration with breakfast at Founders Farmer’s. Good experience!
Great service! Great food! The server was friendly and attentive. Beautiful environment.
Wish some of the customers were so polite. Sat next to a person who couldn’t yell out her personal business loud enough. Awkward!!!
Very disappointed. After reserve a table using open table, I waited another hour to get my table ready. The food was full of cream and far from the last time we eat in Reston.
Disappointing welcome to the restaurant despite having a reservation we were told to wait by reception with dozens of other people, after 10 mins we were finally shown to a table. The waiter was friendly and enthusiastic, starters were huge so I would advise only ordering one per couple. My main course of rotisserie chicken was very dry and lacked seasoning. Overall a disappointing experience especially as we had waited for 2 years to visit the restaurant after a failed attempt to eat there on our last trip to DC from the UK.
Food was good, our server was nice and engaging. We made reservations and got in quickly. Overall pleasant experience
It was so freezing cold it was hard to enjoy - jaw chivering cold as AC pumping but a rainy grey day.
Food is fine to good and service not bad but between noise and cold I was uncomfortable
It’s a convenient location so I have tended to go back but after this not sure I will anymore.
I'm vegan and although there were vegan options the vegan burger I ordered did not have a vegan bun. The service was ok. Although the waiter did not check on us much the manager did come to check how the food was.
I was going to take a photo of the food and completely forgot because the food looked so good I started eating immediately! All around, a great weekly spot.
Wonderful service ..
Great fresh food. Always good vibes and awesome drinks!
The food is great, the atmosphere is great. 2 dings against them:
1. Some of the tables are crammed a bit close together so socially it can be a bit daunting over hearing too much of conversations rather than the company you’re with.
2. The fruit crisp is underwhelming compared to the meal itself. Wouldn’t order again
Nice place. Good offering of food as well as good value. Overall, pleasant experience and would dine here again
This was my fifth time to eat here. It is a must do whenever I visit DC. The food is consistently delicious and the service is superior!
We were delayed in being seated well past our reservation time, and when we were shown to our table there were no napkins or cutlery. Other than that, it was good.
Food was late multiple times. Burgers were burnt. Food is good but just a crappy experience. I expected better from this restaurant. This was my second time here and it was not packed.
We had reservations, and when we arrived, we were told that due to the weather, they were running behind. Although we certainly understood, we had tickets to 'Hamilton' and couldn't be late. Fortunately we were able to find two spots at the bar, and we had a most enjoyable meal.
Service was lousy! Had to ask for our coffee after waiting 20 min while watching other people who sat after us get served before us. Waiters cane by three times to give us meals that were not ours. Thinking they may have a lot of new hires causing this?
Brunch was meh! Went here on visit to Washington to see my son Decided to have brunch at Founding Farmers. We were seated within minutes Our waitress was very attentive and we sat upstairs. Food was ok. The hash browns were greasy, Both orders of Hanover Hash had little spice and jalapeños were not distributed throughout the hash. My daughter’s French toast was too crispy with no warm center. Would try dinner but never again brunch.
I enjoyed my french toast. It was pretty big for one person. Great to share with someone! Had an excellent happy waitress, that really made the experience great.
Just went one day without reservations and it was over an hour waiting time(+75 min) but i made reservations for the next day and it was totally worth it. When i visit DC again I’ll define go back
The food is very good here and the portions are generous. We ate here on two consecutive nights. On both occasions, the server was absent for fairly long periods of time. On the first night, after my entree arrived, I finally went up to the bar to order a glass of wine (hadn't seen the server for a while and she didn't deliver the entree). On the second night, we had a similar experience. I think the servers are covering too many tables, and those tables are spread out, so you can't try to catch their attention when they're coming and going to assist other guests.
We live in Denver, but are from DC so decided to give Founding Farmers a try when we were back. We absolutely LOVED it❤️❤️ Everything from our drinks to our dessert was fabulous!! Great staff as well. Please open one in Denver!!!!!!
Waited 20 mins past our reservation time for a table, and once seated the restaurant was so busy the service was extremely poor and intermittent.
While the food we were able to get tasted good, our orders were messed up and people within my party had to wait quite a bit of time while the kitchen was able to correct. This made the overall dining experience very awkward and frustrating.
The manager did comp our bill, but because the level of service was so poor we will not be back.
The cocktails and food was excellent. The wait however was a bit annoying particularly since we'd made a reservation. Our original table time reservation was 6:30pm but we did not get seated until 40 minutes later. Also, recommend they invest in a better notification system for alerting groups to their tables' readiness (i.e. buzzer boxes or texting). Walking around a crowded, loud space yelling peoples' names was not very effective or modern.... Just saying.
The food here is adequate and very overpriced. Service was adequate but not friendly.
The atmosphere is not relaxing, it's a crowded, mass feed-trough kind of place. Unfortunately, there's not much else around there. Black pepper wings were very good; meatloaf and mashed potatoes would have been good except the gravy and mashed potatoes were congealed by the time they got out to me.
Food and service is always great it’s just the check in and waiting and waiting when you have a reservation and the entry way to check in is always crowded and other customers won’t budge or move once they’ve checked in
Noisy. Food was good... not memorable. In town for a visit. Spoiled by exceptional food at home. B- grade
We decided to get several of their appetizers so we could try more of the menu. It was delicious and we came away with a doggie bag to snack on later.
Very creative cooking!
It was very busy with people waiting so reservations
seem to be the way to go. The food was very good and the service was very efficient.
Saturday brunch where the coffee flows. Great menu selections. Solid variety that includes the classics. I could eat the Beet & Goat Cheese Hash a couple times a week. All of my dining companions loved their meal as well. We’ll be back! (P.S. This native West Virginian was super excited to see hometown favorite - J. Q. Dickinson salt & pepper on the table!)
Consistently delicious . This was my niece's first experience with the farm to table experience. She loved it.
Good food. The waiter was excellent. He gave hints to my niece about a drink that she was ordering but unfortunately she didn’t take the hint. She was determined that she wanted it and it was not for her!!!! He was really nice about it. The cornbread starter was outstanding as was the chicken pot pie!
