Young chef with great vision and skill. It is located at a golf course and has a few peaks at the ocean.. so a pretty spot. Definitely worth the stop.
Very impressed with everything. Service was excellent meal was delicious. Great to have this in Annapolis.
Superb. World class dining in the small town of Annapolis Royal. Every effort made to please. Food outstanding equaled by the service.
Lovely surroundings. Great service. Really enjoyed our meal.
Great place. We arrived as a group of 6 with kids. We were a challenging table especially because my mom eats only gluten free products. They accommodated our nutrition needs and her food was immaculate.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner especially since we were able to dine al fresco in the beautiful summer evening. The restaurant is beautifully appointed and the food was excellent.
Beautiful setting, well made, fresh and tasty dishes, lovely presentation. Sadly, only local wines by the glass. (Hence the 4 not 5 stars) I will wait for international wines to join the lineup, then go back for sure!
The food is always outstanding. There is no other dining within the Annapolis Valley which even comes close to the style and execution this restaurant offers. The only downside to eating here this night were the two very large groups in the main dining room. The noise level was deafening & off the charts. Also when the larger of the 2 groups were getting their dinners, service came to a crawl for everyone else. Cant fault the wait staff for that as they did impeccable work juggling it all. It was just too much all at once.
What a lovely spot! Absolutely gorgeous restaurant and setting. The food was fantastic and the folks working there were very nice. Will definitely be back and would highly recommend.
Enjoyed their special tasting menu in celebration of their first anniversary - it was incredible! We chose the 9-course tasting menu and were glad we hadn't eaten all day prior - the fish and meat courses were very generous for a tasting menu. Everything was wonderfully flavourful and perfectly seasoned - each course complemented the next. For the first time in my life, I enjoyed blue cheese - the Dragon Breath blue cheese they serve is exquisite! If you get a chance to participate in one of their tasting menu special events do it - you won't regret it and they usually have a 5-course or 9-course option.
Genuine 5* food and great service. Will be back soon....
Founders House is in a class by itself, or perhaps I should say in a class with Michelin starred restaurants. The chef is unbelievably talented, uses the best quality ingredients, and combines them in a way that each item enhances the others. Eat here NOW - in the near future you will not be able to get a reservation!
We're thrilled that you enjoyed yourself - we love local and that means Chef Chris Pyne has some of the best quality ingredients to work with!
Excellent quality and selection of food and drinks. The oysters were amazing!
Fresh is the secret ingredient! We're glad you enjoyed yourself and hope you visit again soon!
We ate out on the deck, our preference, but it seemed that our service suffered a bit because of that. On the other hand, the place was hopping, even on a Monday night! The food and mixed drinks were exceptional.
The food, drinks and service were superb. Their use of local seasonal ingredients made for excellent dishes. The setting was lovely.
We would heartily recommend this to anyone.
Thank you so much for your review! We do always try to use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, and our menu is always changing with the seasons. So glad to hear you enjoyed your experience! Looking forward to seeing you again. Cheers, Laura Owner/Operator
We were there for brunch and it was delightful.
Our server, Rosie was excellent. Our appetizers were good. My main was the scallops and it was very disappointing - very chewy wheat berries with chewy kale and the puree was tasteless. The scallops did not have a nice sear on them, it was a very disappointing meal. My friends all enjoyed their meal - lobster, and the steak was "good" but also underseasoned. The wine we had was very good and our dessert (chocolate pot) was delicious.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We're grateful that there were elements of your visit that you and your group enjoyed but disappointed that your main dish was not up to our usual standard. We hope you'll visit again and give us a chance to do better.
Great service, brilliant dishes. Lived up to word of mouth. Lobster for me, scallops for my wife. Good craic with servers.
Wonderful restaurant offering a more creative and unique option to dining in this area. We were very excited to see this restaurant open n the Annapolis Valley and are thrilled for the option for more creative and exciting dining experience. The staff is fantastic and the dishes from the appetizer selections to deserts are wonderful. As a pescatarian I had so many options to select from and have locally sourced vegetables and fish. Our dining experience was excellent and we were very satisfied with all out meals. Our somewhat picky 14 year old daughter even asked if we can go back soon. Her panko-breaded fish and chips with the pea puree was amazing. The basil oil on the blueberry cheesecake was a highlight. We will be back weekly when we are visiting the area. Thank you Founders House for the what you bring to this area. Looking forward to the other location in the Tavern.
Our experience was grand. The food is excellent and a special shout out to Rosie, our waiter.
She knows her stuff. Founders House is a must while in and around Annapolis Royal.
Lovely location, excellent meals and authentic, friendly staff. A special thank you to Gavin the Bartender (but so much more), who went out of his way to make our visit truly memorable and who set the bar high should we be fortunate enough to make a return visit.
Can't remember what I had was called--asparagus/fennel/pesto 'stew' wrapped with egg 'crepe'.
And crispy potato cubes--delicious and well-presented.
Chris (?) was excellent too--attentive but not intrusive.
Delicious menu! Everything we had was local, fresh and creative.
The entire experience was perfect. The staff were friendly, courteous and knowledgeable, especially the sommelier,
The deconstructed chowder was outstanding, each mouthful a subtlety different taste, the scallop main was also an adventure just when one might think that there could be nothing new the inclusion of grapes citrus and a perfectly cooked green belied that. We ended with a novel buckthorn sorbet and Rooibos Baba, both new to us and a perfect finale to an outstanding meal
We're so glad you had a great experience! With our focus on locally sourced foods and beverages, you'll be sure to find something new and interesting to try throughout the year as our menu changes seasonally.
Lovely surroundings. A special experience. We will be taking other visitors there soon.
I had a pasta dish that had whole vegetables in it and I thought that was unnecessary.
Held a business lunch for six at Founders House and they did not disappoint! They left us enough time to talk while being unobtrusively attentive - Seanna provided excellent service. The food was exceptional as well - my guests enjoyed their Taste of Nova Scotia 2019 award-winning chowder as well as the hearty and flavourful meal-sized salads.
We are happy to host business lunches or dinners - it's our pleasure to help you show off our wonderful area!
An excellent restaurant - woud recommend this to anyone.
Came in for brunch. Excellent service and food was outstanding. Beautiful outdoor seating with amazing view.
My wife thoroughly enjoyed her greens starter. Her main meal of mussels was great with one BIG exception. She does not eat meat. She found a couple of pieces of pork in her broth. There was no mention of this ingredient in the description. How come? In addition her side of crispy cauliflower was a treat. I had the superb angnolotti with mushrooms and goat cheese to start. My strip loin was prepared as requested and is described as accompanied by a peppercorn jus. Glaze was tasty but was over peppered so rather than complement the excellent cut of beef it overwhelmed it. Fingerling potatoes accompanied the beef were cold and just barely cooked enough. Also included was broccolini done al dente as it should. We are always torn with returning food to the kitchen and we were close to it tonite. It means aggravation and delayed eating and can sometimes result in dinner partners watching each other eat waiting for food to return. Would we come back? Definitely but wiser to direct the kitchen and ask more questions.
We chose to dine in the bar and enjoy the beautifully misty view over Fort View Golf Course. The bartender, Gavin, made us feel welcome and was wonderfully attentive! His special summer cocktail, The Pink Pint, was incredible - more tart than sweet, it was delicious and refreshing. At approximately 2oz of alcohol per drink, it went down extremely...dangerously...easily! I loved it!
We began with a lovely fresh bread service - they provided a light and crunchy bunch of house-made seed crackers to accommodate my need for a gluten-free meal. That was followed by the amuse-bouche - a salmon tartar that teased our appetites perfectly. For our mains, my husband had the fish and chips, while I had the mussels with the a small Caesar salad. The meals were wonderful!
And then there was dessert. My husband had the blueberry cheesecake and he absolutely loved it! Usually, a gluten-free dessert choice is some variation of sorbet...not this time! Although the Sea buckthorn berry sorbet was mighty tempting - instead I went with Variations on rhubarb. Chef Chris replaced the gluten-filled biscuit with house-made gluten-free almond crackers - wow, what a dessert! It tasted like my childhood...like the rhubarb I used to pick and nibble right out of my grandma’s garden.
We’re frequent diners at this amazing rural restaurant and we can’t wait to go back again!
That we have regulars, like you and your husband and others, gives us a real vote of confidence that we're creating a great experience - we're so glad we get to share that with you frequently!
My husband and I are both chefs (newly retired) and love to see what other chefs are up to as we travel across Canada and the US. Well we were both delighted to find the Founders House in Annapolis Royal last night.
The moment we walked in the door and were greeted by the charming and witty Darcy, we knew it was going to be a good time. He led us to a lovely table in bright and airy sun room and promptly brought out two delicious craft cocktails from an extensive list. I’m a big fan of Elderflower so the Pink Pint hit my happy button. After studying the menu, an amuse bouche arrived in the form of a crunchy little ball of duck confit with a house made chutney that worked its appetite magic. Great surprise. Soon after, a thoughtful presentation of home made and very fresh rolls with hummus and herb butter served on top of a warm stone arrived. It’s attention to details like that that just made us feel pampered throughout the whole meal and Darcy was there always making us feel like new friends. Both appetizers were creative and delicious (baby fiddleheads with poached egg and pork belly nuggets) The house made pasta with artichoke, tomato barigoule was good but could have used more of their wonderful charred feta but the local lamb cooked two ways was the big hit in hubby’s evening. It was cooked to perfection. To finish off We ordered the sorbet with shards of crispy meringue that balanced the ultra tartness of the local berry used ( I can’t remember the name) and a glass of scotch was chosen from their impressive bar list. It has definitely been our favorite fine dining (and without any stuffiness) in the maritimes to date and we’ll be back soon.
It is such a treat for us to hear how other chefs feel about our food and service! We look forward to your next visit - the menu changes seasonally and during the summer we also have our market menu inspired by what Chef Chris finds each week at our local farmers' markets.
The tastiest food I’ve had in a long time! Best seafood chowder, best squid, best Caesar salad and beautiful atmosphere. I appreciated how accommodating they were to my children. Amazing dining experience.
What a gem in this community! From the moment you arrive you can tell they really pride themselves in providing a top quality experience, from using fresh and local ingredients to presentation in food and atmosphere.
This place has quality food, that you would want on a nice date or a special occasion, but it is also great for any regular night out. The patio is fantastic! Though we couldn't eat outside due to rain, I'll definitely be looking to enjoy a drink outside next time.
We enjoyed the amuse-bouche they started us with, the charcuterie board to share, market menu fresh salmon with risotto and I couldn't stop there and had to have the cheesecake. Everything was delicious and presented beautifully. Portions were generous without being wasteful - which left just enough room for the yummy dessert. The environment of the restaurant is also nice, and they provide excellent service!
I will definitely be back and highly recommended enjoying the drive to experience it yourself!
Thank you so much for your incredible review! It means so much to hear such positive feedback from our guests. I will be sure to pass on the compliments to Chef Chris and the rest of the Founders House Team! Hope to see you again soon! Cheers, Laura Owner/Operator
We booked a Saturday lunch. The deconstructed chowder was very nicely presented. DH did not like that it contained smoked fish. Other wise it was delicious and served hot. He enjoyed the pork belly bowl and I enjoyed cold meat platter. Only the pate was house made. The servings were ample and we did not try the desserts. Our waiter was excellent. The next tine we are in the area, we plan to have a meal at this restaurant as it is probably the best in the entire area.
Thank you for your thoughtful review, it sounds like you had a good over all experience. I'm so glad to hear you are planning to return next time you are in the area! Look forward to seeing you again. Cheers, Laura Owner/Operator
Chef Chris knocked it outta the park with the tasting menu. No question there is not a better place to eat in sou’west nova. Flavours of all the dishes pared really well. Don’t be afraid to be Adventurous it’s all worth trying.
Wow, thank you so much for the incredible review, I will pass the compliments onto Chef Chris! We'd love to have you dine with us again! Cheers, Laura Owner/Operator
Founders House is a must visit dining location in Nova Scotia. It is one of the best dining experiences I have had and I have been to many restaurants on this continent. Chef Chris Pyne And owner Laura Robinson never dissapoint. The setting is picturesque and the dining facility is well appointed. Service is excellent and the food is worth every penny. Annapolis Royal is very fortunate to have this gem.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such thoughtful review. We take pride in everything we do here at Founders House and it means so much when guests appreciate our hard work! Looking forward to seeing you again! Cheers, Laura Owner/Operator
Chef Chris prepared a excellent mother’s day brunch. Also they accommodated our mother who is 92 with a smaller portion because she can only eat small portions.
Thank you so much for your lovely review, I will pass on the kind words to Chef Chris! We look forward to seeing you again! Cheers, Laura Owner/Operator
We enjoyed our meal, the haddock and fries were very nice and fair priced. Wine was good but at $10 a 5oz glass is high for the area. We thought the desserts at $10 and $14 were overpriced. We were seated in the bar area and based on past experience prefer the back dining room so that you're not constantly having the door open and close. We both thought that the staff were not as neatly attired as on previous occasions. What happened to the lovely Annapolis Tartan ties?
Thank you for your thoughtful comments, we are always striving to improve the experience of our guests, and this allows us to address things that need to be improved upon. You would be happy to hear, that Annapolis Tartan ties are back! We look forward to having you dine with us again, and feel free to request your favourite table while making a reservation! Cheers, Laura Owner/Operator
We’ve been eating at Founders House since they opened last summer. The food is always outstanding and the service is equally as good. They are always willing to accommodate dishes for my gluten intolerance and everything is delicious. I had their Taste of Nova Scotia, award winning chowder tonight and it was amazing! We love that this restaurant is located so close to where we live. It’s by far the best restaurant we dine at in Nova Scotia.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review. It means so much to us to have local guests who appreciate what we are doing here. Thank you for returning again and again! Can't wait to see you again! Cheers, Laura Owner/Operator
