Fort Oak was a nice place to grab some food. I would say it fell a little short when being compared to its sister restarting Trust in the flavor department, but overall a good experience.
Excellent food and service. Great atmosphere.
Always a fantastic experience in so many ways. Server Richard was outstanding. He was very informative in explaining to our friends who had not eaten here before the way the menu best works. We shared Mussels and Clams which we love. Great broth and grilled bread. Shared Stone Fruit salad and 2 orders of bread. Cocktails never disappoint! Waygu and Rosti potatoes a standout. Branzino always fresh and flavorful. Love that smoky charred taste on every plate. Our fourth time in a month and we will be back! All the wait servers are truly best in class. Whoever trains them is doing an amazing job.
We loved Trust when we went so we excited to try out Fort Oak. It was great! the place is so cool, the cocktails were perfect, and a few of those items i will be craving for a long time. This is now one of our go to spots for small plates.
The food and service was fantastic! Went for brunch and had the egg white omelet with ricotta cheese...delicious!
Was not thrilled - too much hype. Arrived about 45 min early and sat at bar, which was nice and staff there was on top of things. Hostess said if a table opens up earlier she would get us in. Well at our reservation time, we had to go to her. Bar was not super crowded and there were tables out there before our reservation time. Get seated and took some time for waiter to come over. When he did stop by, explained the menu. We ordered 3 small plates, one of them being bread. That you pay for. It took 25 - 30 min for the bread to come out. Unbelievable. Other tables didn't seem to have to wait and their food was coming out. Husband enjoyed his meal more than mine (branzino), my halibut seemed dry and salty. I enjoyed the rice and asparagus that came with the halibut more than the fish. Also put in it was our anniversary and nothing. Not even a happy anniversary. Not sure why restaurants ask this when they don't do anything with this. Best part was table next to us had a fly or some type of bug in her drink. Was really disappointed after everything I read, was excepting something way better after everything I read. Lackluster anniversary dinner.
Always receive exceptional service and outstanding food every time I've gone to Fort Oak. Thank you to all of the staff!
One of the best overall dining experiences that we have had recently in San Diego. Great new food options, fun environment and excellent service.
Overall a delicious meal of shared plates. Definitely would recommend the oysters, scallops, prawn, pork belly, caullini, and cavatelli. The branzino was very salty and the salsa didn’t quite match the flavor profile. Service was very attentive in the beginning but as it got busier was much slower. Waited a long time for them to take our card to pay. I’d still go back
Food and service was great except the 45 day aged steak was chewy and less flavorful compared to aged steaks we’ve had in the past. It was a letdown for the price but the rest of the food was excellent.
Stephanie was our wonderful server. She was knowledgeable and made some great recommendations. Found this gem of a restaurant where we could bring our Husky to enjoy a great brunch on Sunday. Definitely will be returning.
Portion size is small. Food is salty which our waiter claimed is because they incorporate a lot of spices in their dishes. We got a tuna tartare appetizer that didn’t have any chips or crackers to go with it so you’re basically eating a tiny portion of salty tuna and avocado on it’s own. We got a fried quail appetizer that was overly breaded and fatty. Drinks were very weak. Prices were too high to justify ever coming back...especially when nothing we ate was exciting and they did nothing special for our 20 year anniversary celebration.
Perfect date night! Had a blast with the hubby, sat at the chef’s table and enjoyed watching the kitchen in action. Stephanie waited on us and the service was incredible! Thanks guys!!
Service was excellent and most dishes were solid albeit a bit fussy at times.
Sit outside on a warm night. Less noise and delightful. Food is delicious! Try the Duroc Pork Chop. More than enough for two!
A quieter atmosphere would have enhanced our evening tremendously. We were celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary and would have enjoyed being able to converse more comfortably.
Great blends of tastes and flavours.
Wow. I have been to Fort Oak two times now for dinner in their normal dining room, once for cocktails at the bar, and once for their new Chef's Tasting Experience. It has proven to be CONSISTENTLY excellent on each of those encounters.
Service is on point (Jose was great with water service, Jeff was on top of waiting on us, and Steve was a delight to talk to about the wines he poured us). Each dish (and there are many that are frequently rotated) is superb, and each cocktail I have tried was a winner.
The first time we ate here (two weeks after they opened) was with three other couples that enjoy fine dining and they sort of reluctantly agreed to eat family style, trying almost every dish and cocktail on the menu at the time. They were not disappointed, and we all left very impressed! *and I have to say that we rarely like to go so close to opening because we want the establishment to have time to work out the inevitable kinks. Capitalizing on their experience from Trust, Fort Oak did not need that time; they were running out of the gates.
Last time we came (8/28/19) was with another couple as a quasi-work dinner. We chose it because we knew my husband's client was a foodie and had yet to try out Fort Oak. I was honestly a bit nervous that somehow it would not rise to the occasion to present the amazing experiences that the previous two times offered. WRONG.
For a detailed review of their amazing Chef's Tasting Experience from 8/15/19, find my review on Yelp! You reserve online and pay up front. $100pp + optional wine pairings of $40pp (which we did) + service charge, came to a total of $336 out the door for 2 people. Worth every penny.
Fort Oak is now a go-to for us and we will definitely do the chef's tasting menu again and will bring others to experience it with us...SOON! Five stars all the way. Way to go guys!!
An overall great experience! Started in the bar with a few cocktails and an aperitif. We ordered a few bar bites which were the grilled chicken wings, dumplings, and ahi crudo which were all amazingly perfect! The bartenders were very well versed, tentative, and carried great conversation. Went to the dining room for dinner and overall the ambience, layout, and decor of this restaurant is beautiful and I must say very perfect on what they were trying to achieve. We ordered the sourdough breach, peach burrata, rabbit sausage, pork belly, and tartare as starters which were amazing across the board. For entrees we picked the chicken, Australian wagyu, and Halibut. The chicken and wagyu were cooked perfectly and had great flavors to match the dish. The Halibut had great flavors but the execution fell short here as the Halibut was over cooked and the rice just undercooked from al dente. I asked the server which wine pairs perfectly with the Halibut and she ended up giving me 3 of the 5 wines available on the white wine by glass menu as recommendations, which with my knowledge of being in the food industry for 10 years knows that there’s usually one select wine on the by the glass menu that goes perfectly with certain dishes and when suggested 3 out of 5 usually means they don’t know. I ordered her number 1 recommended wine it didn’t no go with the Halibut dish at all. For dessert we selected the stone fruit cobbler and chocolate mousse which weren’t at all short of phenomenal to cap off a great dinner experience.
Very nice dinner at Fort Oak. I was hoping to have been able to give it a 5, but our experience wasn't remarkable, but good, instead. I think I'll stick with the sister restaurant, Trust!
Perfect sharing menu. Clams and muscles dish stupendous with rich broth.
The service was initially good then he got a couple more tables and it went from decent to bad. We mentioned the Burrata being WAY over salted, and the sever did nothing to correct it. It was very disappointing as my fiancé and I are both managers in the industry and this was not handled correctly. In addition we were there for his birthday and they did nothing to make it even special
The food was good but very pricey. Somethings were very flavorful, but others (particularly the desserts were not very good). It is really loud...so that our table of four had to shout. I wouldn’t go back. Campfire in Carlsbad has a similar concept, but is much better food, and ambience.
Really enjoyed our follow-up experience at Fort Oak after visiting Trust. Really enjoyed the behind the scenes look at the Chef's Counter/Table. The food was amazing and the service was impeccable. Only complaint is that their cocktail game isn't as strong, especially for the price. Thought it would have been a bit more inventive with different flavor profiles. We'll be back for sure!
The fried chicken sandwich is the best in town. However they get knocked down a star for food because they use paper straws that break down in your water and taste like paper. Get a clue... there are plenty of non paper and non plastic straw alternatives that still feel like plastic and don’t disintegrate in your water.
Other than that it’s a good brunch in the neighborhood.
Amazing experience and fantastic food. One of the best places we have been in San Diego
Restaurant/bar so noisy but chef counter was great!
The 'unusual' and varied items on the menu make this place exceptional. The food is top quality and fresh. My steak tartare was exceptionally fresh and presentation was exquisite.
Our Server, Robert, was very knowledgable and service was great. Will definitely return in the future to try other menu items.
All was good. Would come back for the food for sure. The gentleman that walked around and checked on everyone was also very nice.
One of the best restaurants we have been to in the 5 years we have lived in the San Diego region. My wife and I had 3 share plates (fried quail, cavatelli, zucchini) and the Pork Chop entree. All of it was fabulous and a little too much food. I would probably go with 2 share plates and an entree.
I will definitely be coming back to Fort Oak!
Terrific brunch! Menu is innovative, food delicious, great service. We love the corned beef bennie and also lamb shoulder hash.
Some of the best food being prepared in San Diego is coming from Fort Oak. Also lots of vegetarian dishes.
10!!! Everything delicious and best service
I picked Fort Oak primarily because they were close and had outdoor seating available when i wanted to dine (same day). After finding it (signage is not huge because of historic building they are in), we we quickly treated and seated. Every part of our experience was really good to wow. The scallops aguachile and roasted carrots were both wow. I’ll go back just to get those again. The cavatelli was very close to wow and the chicken fried quail was really good. Service was very friendly, helpful with just the right level of attentiveness. The noise level outside was fine, but most of the other dinners were inside, which seemed a little loud. I can’t wait to go back!
a little too noisy for brunch. food was fantastic- 6 dollars for cold brew is steep.
Absolutely fab food and lovely ambience
Sunday brunch. We were initially seated on the patio with our dog in direct sunlight. With no other tables with shade available we were about to leave to find a place with shade at another restaurant down the street. They were able to find a shade. Thank you. They were great to move us inside with our dog (with patio walls open).
Not too impressed. Food was forgettable and way too expensive
We had a delightful meal. I think Fort Oak is one of the very best in San Diego. And we eat out 2-3 times a week. Not our first time here and definitely not our last.
