Forno Osteria & Bar Ratings and Reviews
I thought this restaurant was very pricey. I got a smallish piece of fish with some sauce for $27. No side dish or salad included. Thankfully it was nice outside, so we sat out there because it was very noisy inside. It has a bar atmosphere. Some places that have the word "bar" in their name is not as "bar-like", but this place is. The food was good, but it we didn't get much for the price we paid. My husband got a tortellini dish that had 4 or 5 large totellinis and that was it. No bread or anything included at all. It's probably a better place to go for just drinking and eating something smaller, like their pizzas.
I was entertaining friends from out-of-town and Forno was recommended by my foodie sister and brother-in-law. Their kids even recommended it. If you don't want to read any further, just know that it was exemplary in every way.
Breaking it down, the waitstaff was attentive, personable and unobtrusive. They weren't shy about recommending dishes and were efficient shuttling food and drink.
The food is simply stellar, everything we ate. We ordered several appetizers to share, everything from heirloom tomato salad to tripe (which was other-worldly good) and every dish burst with flavor. As we weren't after heavy entrées, we each ordered a different pizza. They feature thin, flavorful crusts and simple toppings. I won't describe every dish or their flavors but everything was imbued with a depth and complexity that is rare when dining out today.
Please try Forno. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
Any attempt to stick to a diet is happily futile when my husband and I go to Forno. Between the goat cheese and honey bruschetta, bolognese, creamed corn and lovely wine list, we're in food heaven. The service has always been fabulous and the atmosphere is hip and fun. Highly recommend!
Went for the Pasta special. It was very good pasta and meat sauce at an excellent price. Service good as was the food.
Only difficulty, for those of us in our late 80's is the restriction that one must eat at the bar or at the "high table" sitting on backless stools.
This was a WOW!! We drove from Dayton, Ohio because we heard what a great restaurant it was. We were not disappointed at all! The tortellini was the best I've ever had & the pizza was phenomenal! Alex our server was wonderful, fun & explained the dishes very well!
Will definitely make the drive again soon!
Given my dietary restrictions (meat- mammal & fowl allergy), options are often limited. Not here! Heirloom Tomato Salad is to die for, the fish is really good and the pasta is unsurpassable, especially the Basil & Ricotta Tortelloni. Fantastic wine list. Decadent desserts! Overall the best meal & dining experience I've had- ever! Really, it was THAT good! And yes, I do get out, a lot!
Alex, our server, was awesome! Extremely attentive and spent as much time with us as we needed (but still gave us plenty of space). Just a few adjectives to describe him are helpful, nice, knowledgeable and fun! TJ stopped by our table too (a couple times) and also added to our wonderful overall dining experience.
It wasn't cheap, but well worth the splurge. Dreaming about my next visit. Hope it's not too long away.
I was really excited because I read amazing reviews about this place. I really wanted to like this place because we moved into the neighborhood earlier this year and love to be able to walk to the nearby restaurants. However, the food was really just ok. The gnocchi had a really really good flavor but was served a little cold. The short rib was under salted and dry and the porchop eventho it was a good portion, was not crispy, which is what I expect when I order a fried piece of meat. It was soggy. I had wanted to try the dessert with some coffee but the food was so mediocre that I didn't want to spend any more than the $84 dollars we paid for dinner. The service was great though and the place is very inviting. I really really wished I liked this place. It's too adorable and the menu looks amazing but what we ordered did not live up to the expectations.
I really enjoy Forno - great pastas, a good selection of appetizers and entrees, and a nice patio for outdoor dining. But their service can be lacking at times, which was our recent experience (missing an opportunity to provide an outside table, slow to take our order, messing up one of the entrees...). They need to beef up their level of service to be among Cincinnati's finest, but they're still an enjoyable and tasty option for a good night out!
Food was very good, especially the gazpacho and creamed corn. Enjoyed the wine suggested with my entre. Price point was reasonable. Sat out on the patio on a perfect evening, though the tables are very close and we could hear what others around us were discussing. Next time, we will sit inside for privacy.
This was our first visit and came highly recommended from a friend. the restaurant did not disappoint in any way! Service was EXCELLENT and the food even better. Loved the setting and great place to someday stop in and grab a seat at the bar for dinner. I would highly recommend with one exception--stop charging for the bread! This is an an Italian restaurant and growing up Italian charging for bread is like charging for water!!!! Otherwise we will definitely be back soon! Loved it!
The food was very good as was the service. It wasn't overly busy or crowded and they had a table for us outside as we requested. Really my only issue was that it was a sunny day and we got a little fried with the heat. Not all the outdoor tables are shaded!
I cannot recommend Forno. This was our first time at Forno. We had a 5 o'clock reservation and although only one other couple was in the restaurant we were seated at a table directly across from the kitchen with blaring music playing. The room was too air conditioned. The menu was somewhat confusing and although we told our waiter we were new to Forno he was not inclined to offer much help with making menu selections. Our waiter misunderstood our order and only ordered one of our entrees. When our food arrived I had a piece of trout(?) and my husband had a side of risotto. When they realized the error they did offer to prepare another entree if we wanted to split the first one, but we chose not to do that. Everything here is a la carte so you get no bread or salad with an entree. I ordered the trout which came with 2 limp pieces of asparagus and a sauce. Curiously the trout looked like salmon. I will say this is the first time I have eaten at an Italian restaurant and left hungry. Definitely unimpressed. Good if you are not hungry.
Service was good. Bread was good and well seasoned, however you should note that there is a charge for the bread. The tagliatelle bolognese wasn't great... tasted like chili mac hamburger helper, which was just OK but definitely not what I was anticipating. The spaghettini arrabbiata was good. Atmosphere was a little cramped for my liking... too many tables crammed into a small space and needs a little better lighting.
The best recommendation I can give an Italian restaurant is that my Italian mother would eat the food and not complain. Meals are freshly and authentically prepared. The wild boar pasta was richly flavorful giving sensations not only of taste but smell and texture. My Italian cousins prepared a similar dish for me in Tuscany. My non-Italian friend raved about his pizza, how the thin crust supported the explosively delicious tomato, sausage and cheese toppings. Yummy!!
We welcomed a new colleague also new to Cincinnati. We were able to take our time and enjoyed the moderate hubbub of the venue. The food was excellent and portions were appropriate. Our server, Katie, was well trained and an excellent resource. We will return!
