Everything was ok. Nothing terrible, but nothing great either.
We loved Fornetto Mei! We had the shrimp scampi and the short ribs with polenta. Both were DELICIOUS. The restaurant has a warm, cozy atmosphere---and the service was friendly and attentive. We will definitely go back.
A cozy, classy restaurant with delicious food and intimate bar.
Restaurant Week: seared scallops with roasted corn and squash, Bolognese and lava cake delicious. Tuesday night super quiet and the drinks were definitely worth it!!
Food was really poor
Wish it was better as live in the neighborhood
Cozy little place, good food and very attentive staff.
They accepted the reservation but informed me upon arrival that the kitchen was closed. The whole point in using the app was to find food nearby when I arrived late on a flight to ORD.
The Seafood Risotto was divine! The shrimp and scallops were perfectly cooked and the the flavor was excellent. The Ceasar salad was a pleasant surprise. The dressing was not cream based but very light and flavorful. I truly enjoyed this meal.
Excellent food fired pizza in an old world setting
Our server, Solomon, was excellent. He served my husband and I in the bar and then moved us over to the restaurant for our dinner with friends. he did a great job.
The service was excellent, but the food was only 'OK'. I'd never been to Chicago before, I had higher expectations of the pizza. And they don't have a pepper grinder - what's with that? Just regular old ground pepper in a shaker on the table.
We enjoyed our dinner with long time friends. Attentive service and good food.
We shared the appetizers and deserts.
Not a good experience. Ordered a Caesar salad and it was served with no dressing and pickled anchovies.
Will not be back.
We visit Chicago once a year and go out of our way to eat here. This intimate restaurant is located at the Whitehall Hotel but you can toss out any preconceived notions about this being ordinary hotel food. It's reasonable prices and interesting menu present a far better experience. Choose anything on the menu. You can't go wrong. Don't skip dessert either.
This is a strange restaurant in a hotel and it was empty even during restaurant week. Our waitress got every course wrong and argued with us on what we ordered from the restaurant week menu. A 20% tip was included for a party of 5 and the service was terrible.
Thos waa one of those rare scenarios where the service was top notch and the food was even better, but the relative anonymity of the restaurant and chef provided a more intimate dining experience than we could have hoped for in one of the more popular areas in Chicago. I dont think it will remain this way for long.
Food was awful. We ordered the arancini, meat & cheese tray, pizza and shrimp pasta. I sampled it all and chose to drink a coke instead. Wish I would have read the reviews before eating here.
First time there, pleasantly surprised by everything. Perfect atmosphere for a date or casual meeting, very good food, attentive service.
The restaurant looks lovely but the service was inattentive and unfriendly. Worst of all, the food was terrible. Almost everything we ordered arrived cold despite the place being half empty. The calamari was so overcooked it was like rubber and inedible. The margherita pizza was cold and mediocre. My cocktail was straight whiskey and my girlfriend's tasted like cough syrup. The only thing we had that was good was the arancini. Not worth the price.
Went to Fornetto Mei last Thursday night with a Gilt City deal (and would come back without the deal). We each received a glass of house wine (one white, one red, both great sized pours!) and each were able to pick from the pizza listed on their menu. We chose the Quattro Formaggi and the Tre Carne, both of which we would definitely choose again. The meal was also started with warm and fresh bread, olive, oil, and parmesan cheese.
Overall, we had a great experience, the service was amazing and perfectly attentive, and a huge shout out to the woman making the pizzas, as they stole the show! I would highly recommend coming here. The atrium is great for people watching outside and beautiful seeing the Christmas lights up. Could also see it as a great space to hold an event with drinks and pizza.
There was only one other person there! I think that is why they seemingly gave us instant coffee rather than make a fresh pot just for us, especially since I was drinking de-caf. The food was sensational, On time, tasty and fresh. If you ever want true tarimusu, this is the place to go!
One my favorite places, bartender is great and friendly and the pizza is amazing!
The food was really good
Revisted this neighborhood gem. They have a new chef and the food is excellent. The chef redid the menu which was an improvement. Very few people in the restaurant. But I think the service would have been excellent anyway. The restaurant is dark and romantic. We sat right behind the wood fired pizza oven, which made it seem romantic. In addition to the regular menu, you can order from the pizza bar menu.
Well let's start with when we entered the restaurant the manager was behind the bar and yelled just sit wherever. Not what you hope for at these prices. We than waited 10 minutes before menus were brought to us. The server was
Slow and inattentive. Once we placed our order it took forever.
We had the bolognese which wasn't a true bolognese more like meat sauce, and short rib polenta, the polenta was like mush. I would avoid this place!
I ordered the Lemon Rosemary Roasted Chicken, and it was by far the smallest chicken leg I've ever seen in my life. It tasted okay, but the proportion was extremely small, and there were no additional foods/side-dishes served with the tiny portion of chicken. I ended up going out afterwards to get more food. For 24 dollars, I expected a much larger portion of food
Pleasant surprise. We were a little confused about where the entrance was but once we found it we were so happy. The three of us shared a traditional Caesar salad. It was served in a crispy parmesan bowl. We had the veal meatballs in red sauce. Best sauce we've had in ages! We also enjoyed the pork Bolognese and the chicken piccatta. The service was warm and friendly. Being able to have a dinner where we could talk without shouting was wonderful!
Awesome food!! I would go back and recommend the place.
The meal felt incomplete due to a lack of vegetables offered with each dish. The braised short ribs were very tender, the polenta was just ok. But again, no side of vegetables offered. On the up side, the tiramisu was out of this world! Perfect!
I like going to Fornetto Mei because you can count on quality food delivered with attentive service. I realize not everyone likes grapes and sausage on their pizza, but their signature pizza which also has goat cheese has just that...and it is a wonderful combination of sweet-salty-creamy on the palate!
I went here for restaurant week, and it was a great value. The food and the service was phenomenal. It's inside a hotel by the way!
Fornetto Mei is nestled into The Whitehall Hotel, a hidden gem on a tree-lined street of Chicago's Gold Coast. After passing the threshold and strolling through the lounge/bar a sense of time travel encapsulates the mind and transcends the experience to another era. One of mahogany memories and speakeasy splendor. The romantic dining hall boasts a "beautiful little pizza oven," and is exceptionally quaint.
The menu showcased seasonal ingredients and the wine list was simply perfect to select from for the food offered. We started with veal meatballs and mushroom bruschetta; both delicious and perfect portion sizes. Chef Steve's short ribs and polenta was a dish that I wanted to savor for many moments. In fact, I may or may not have licked the plate clean. The tasty and tender meat melted into the creamy polenta and was accented by a hearty au jus. Truly soul food and a dish worth spotlighting.
A lovely Chicago Restaurant Week prix fixe experience that left me craving a return to taste the remainder of this season's menu.
Fornetto Mei is definitely worth considering as your next spot for a romantic date, a small celebration or an intimate conversation with a friend.
We enjoyed a wonderful dinner here—pizza, hors d'oeuvres, and dessert—in this elegant Italian restaurant just off Michigan Avenue. Will be back for sure.
My Wife and I dined for Christmas and it was a very enjoyable experience. The food quality was excellent and at a reasonable price. We would definitely visit again.
The beef tips were inedible - poor quality meat and odd seasoning. The meat was surrounded by a watery pool of tasteless polenta. Tried the cheese plate and bisque which I would not recommend either. I had severe stomach pain for the next 24 hours and would never eat there again, even for free. The restaurant was 95% empty on a Friday night at 7:30. The adjacent bar had a loud group of people but, other than that, the place was nearly empty.
Food was good, service was not the best. Had to ask for our water to be filled twice, waited fifteen minutes for Soloman (our waiter) to pick up the bill. Then we are asked to change tables so the hostess can sit a large party at our table. There were at least ten empty tables, four occupied. Unbelievable!
The food and service were both fantastic. A special thank you to the chef for accommodating the dietary needs of the marathon runner in our party by preparing something off-menu.
Brunch at Fornetto Mei was refreshingly a pleasant experience. Server was attuned to diet restrictions of one of the patrons. Parfait was tad bit syrupy. Rest was delicious though.
I highly recommend this restaurant for couples.
calamari was good, mussels could have been bigger, the netto pizza was good
